New South Wales Police have fatally shot a man on the state's Mid North Coast. Police say the man was armed with a knife and a chainsaw during a home invasion at Tuncurry.

00:00A man has been shot dead by police and a 28-year-old woman seriously injured after a stabbing and a
00:08number of carjackings on the New South Wales mid-north coast. Police were called around 6.40
00:13this morning to a home in Tunkurri where they say the man was armed with a knife and a chainsaw.
00:19There, the 28-year-old woman who police say may have been in a de facto relationship with the man
00:25was stabbed a number of times. She's been airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle
00:30in a serious but stable condition. Police say the man then left the home in a ute before stealing
00:35another vehicle at a nearby service station. He's then driven into Parkland and onto the
00:40Foster Tunkurri Bridge, crashing the car, taking off in another one and then ramming two police
00:46vehicles, minorly injuring an officer. The man was then pursued to a property at Rainbow Flat.
00:52Police have declared a critical incident and say it will be a lengthy investigation involving
00:57multiple witnesses. They say they're investigating whether it was a domestic violence incident
01:02or whether drugs and alcohol were involved. They say they're offering support to the police
01:07officers involved and the wider community. We've got a 28-year-old woman with very serious
01:14injuries. Although she is stable, she has very serious injuries. We've had two carjackings,
01:18we've had a police pursuit, a male armed with a knife and a chainsaw. He's engaged with police
01:25with a knife. He's made threats to other people. I mean, this is a very life-threatening incident
01:30that there was multiple lives at risk really. Anyone with CCTV footage or information that
01:35may assist police are urged to contact Crimestoppers.
