00:00Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker rises to a new box office milestone, Ronan Farrow tells
00:04the truth about threats against journalists, and Beastie Boys fight for their right to
00:08party at Apple TV+. I'm Tiffany Taylor, and right now I've got the top stories you need
00:13to know today from The Hollywood Reporter News.
00:15First up, Ronan Farrow is teaming up with HBO for a new documentary investigating threats
00:20against journalists worldwide. The untitled doc is the first to go into production under
00:23a multi-film deal the catch-and-kill author signed with the premium cable outlet in 2018.
00:28The three-year pact calls for him to produce and front a series of investigative documentary
00:33specials for HBO. Farrow said,
00:35"...around the world journalists are under fire. They're being spied on using new surveillance
00:40technology, imprisoned, even murdered." And we're seeing evolving tactics deployed against
00:44reporters in the United States, too, against the backdrop of a new era of misinformation
00:49campaigns and rhetoric that seeks to undermine the very idea of objective reporting.
00:54The latest Star Wars film has joined an exclusive club, the Billion Dollar Club. The Rise of
00:58Skywalker has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. It reached the
01:03milestone on Tuesday, just 28 days since its release. THR's Neha Joy in New York has all the details.
01:09The heavily buzzed-about film, which closes out the Skywalker saga that George Lucas first
01:13brought to the big screen 42 years ago earned $481.3 million, along with $519.7 million overseas
01:22for a worldwide tally of $1.001 billion. A big question now is where the Disney and Lucas
01:29films' tentpole will land in comparison to the last installment, Star Wars The Last Jedi, which topped out
01:34at $1.33 billion globally. Box office analysts believe Skywalker has a shot at $1.2 billion to $1.25 billion.
01:43Thanks, Neha, Rise of Skywalker capped a record-shattering year for Disney, which has now incredibly
01:47seen seven of its 2019 releases join the Billion Dollar Club. And the Beastie Boys are headed to
01:52Apple TV+. The documentary Beastie Boys Story from Spike Jonze has been picked up by Apple's streaming service.
01:58You gotta fight for your right to party!
02:06The documentary about the legendary hip-hop group behind hits like Fight for Your Right to Party
02:10is directed by Jones and features Grammy Award-winning band members Mike Diamond, a.k.a. Mike D.,
02:16and Adam Horowitz, a.k.a. Ad-Rock, talking about their music career and 40-year friendship.
02:21The film debuts globally on Apple TV Plus on April 24. Mike D. and Ad-Rock, along with the late MCA,
02:27formed the hip-hop group. And it's worth noting that Jones also directed the music video for the
02:32Beastie Boys' 1994 hit single, Sabotage.
