00:09Taika Waititi is officially headed to a galaxy far, far away.
00:13The filmmaker behind Thor Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit will direct and co-write a new Star Wars movie for theatrical release.
00:19Oscar-nominated 1917 writer Christy Wilson Cairns will pen the script with Waititi.
00:24Back in January, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Lucasfilm was courting Waititi for a Star Wars film.
00:29Waititi, who won a screenwriting Oscar for Jojo Rabbit, has a full schedule.
00:33He's already shot the upcoming Searchlight Pictures soccer film Next Goal Wins and has the Thor Ragnarok follow-up Thor Love and Thunder, due out February 11, 2022 from Marvel Studios.
00:44He cut his teeth in the Star Wars world by directing the season one finale of Disney Plus' The Mandalorian and voicing a droid.

00:53No release date has been set for the project from Waititi, which was announced on StarWars.com to coincide with today's unofficial holiday celebrating all things Star Wars.
01:03In addition, Disney and Lucasfilm also confirmed that Russian doll co-creator Leslie Hedlund will serve as showrunner for a Disney Plus streaming series set in the Star Wars galaxy.
01:11Disney Plus also currently has a Diego Luna-led Rogue One prequel in the works, as well as a series starring Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi in development.
