00:00:00South Korea the brilliant Roy Jones fought his way to an apparent
00:00:0488 and indeed the sport of amateur boxing still in some ways recovering from the atrocity of 1988
00:00:19when in Seoul South Korea the brilliant Roy Jones fought his way to an apparent gold medal
00:00:25but left without one after the atrocious decision that gave his gold medal to a Korean fighter
00:00:3110 years ago Roy Jones was victimized by the most unconscionable decision in Olympic boxing history
00:00:46to this day his gold medal match versus Korean Park Sihan is marred by mysterious allegations of
00:00:52corruption and though Roy took home the award as the game's most outstanding boxer he left Korea
00:00:57without his much-deserved gold medal it was almost like a dream so much hard we were trying to get
00:01:04there and now it was all becoming a reality everything that I was working for was falling
00:01:09right into place until I got to the end Roy Jones building up a tremendous lead and should be 15
00:01:16seconds away from the goal I knew I had him but then me and the referee was standing there waiting
00:01:22and I hear these Koreans start screaming at this table I said no I can't believe this
00:01:28the referee was even whispering to me they got to be out of their minds I just don't believe this is
00:01:34even about to happen boy it's tough man it's very tough on point three two in the blue corner
00:01:44well there it is Park Sihan has stolen the belt
00:01:53got all that night all the next night and all the next night I could have three nights
00:01:58of the five judges at ringside three had voted for the Korean shortly after the fight a judge from
00:02:08Morocco made some revealing comments after the fight we went out and cornered the Moroccan judge
00:02:15this Larrabee and he told us that he thought Jones had won so big that he voted for Park because he
00:02:24didn't want to embarrass the host country he thought Jones would win four to one that was his story
00:02:29the 1988 Seoul Olympics became a watershed embarrassment to amateur boxing and brought
00:02:36to light the sport's desperate need for change the three offending judges in the Jones bout were
00:02:41temporarily suspended and computerized scoring was introduced for the 92 games and with the fall of
00:02:48the Berlin Wall the secret files of the East German Stassi police became public portions of which
00:02:54provided further evidence that boxing officials in Seoul had been bribed citing this new evidence and the
00:03:01documented post fight comments of the Moroccan judge an appeal of the Jones Park bout was launched more
00:03:06than eight years after the fact yes he investigated found that that the judges hadn't been bribed then
00:03:17finally there was one judge who supposedly was quoted as having said that he voted for the Korean athlete because of the
00:03:22Korean athlete because he felt sorry for him he'd been beaten so badly not true he said he never said
00:03:29that in fact he never did the interview she knows what that we did not talk to this man apparently she
00:03:36knows that the French press did not talk to this man but here's this blabbermouth Moroccan going around
00:03:42telling everybody what he did but she knows it's not true that's what he said and that's what the IOC accepted and
00:03:49he made his report very clear so the appeal was denied but the IOC over time was so impressed with
00:03:56Roy Jones Jr. he was given the highest other order the IOC can give the Olympic order and I had the great privilege of
00:04:04presenting it to him in New York I understand that's good it's a very prestigious award but you got to
00:04:10remember my goal was not to go over and win an Olympic order my goal was to go and win a gold medal where's the gold medal I still don't have
00:04:17and while he still doesn't have his gold medal Roy Jones has gone on to become a three-division professional champion
00:04:25a far cry from gold medalist Park Sehun who's a gym teacher outside of Seoul so 10 years later what is the legacy of Roy Jones' Olympic experience
00:04:35he's just a part of the history just another just another page of the history just another another fine boxer who was robbed
00:04:43he's not the first he won't be the last
00:04:52still to come Roy Jones against Lou Bilval here in Madison Square Garden Jones trying to add another
00:04:58sensational performance to the two that he has produced within the past year
00:05:05back live with 1968 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist George Foreman George uh earlier at the
00:05:11beginning of the telecast Larry and I spoke about the new Roy Jones suddenly so much more active
00:05:17in promoting his own career and taking those fights which become available when he can take them what do
00:05:22you make of that look he was I think when he was deprived of that gold medal he was also deprived he
00:05:27deprived himself of that smile I've been there done that what you want to do is compete in the Olympics the
00:05:33last thing you want is to cry about winning or losing that's why we have the goodwill games thank
00:05:39God for the goodwill games so you think that for nine years he was a joyless fighter because of the
00:05:44sadness he felt about the Olympics and now he's finally gotten over yeah he's restored he you know
00:05:48the old saying is that he restores my soul the guy's soul has been restored I think he's a happy man
00:05:53because of it he's successful and why not be happy to be just a part of the Olympics and a happy Roy
00:05:59Jones is a tough man to face in the ring as he's certainly shown in his last two appearances Larry the
00:06:04first round destruction of Montel Griffin last August and then the body punch knockout of Virgil
00:06:10Hill this past April supposing that ferocious Roy Jones comes out once again does Lou Duval have the
00:06:17firepower and the ability to weather that early assault and make a fight of it we can hope that RJ
00:06:25shows up RJ being the bad Roy Jones as he calls himself the terminator and and that LDV the bad Lou
00:06:34DelVal also shows up that would be a lot of fun but realistically after those two Jones performances
00:06:42those annihilations we can expect future opponents to throw stink bombs at him to just try to frustrate
00:06:50him and hope something good happens later in the fight DelVal may be equipped to fight that kind of
00:06:57a fight he's a southpaw he has some skills he's clever he's determined he's fighting at home he may
00:07:04have made one mistake however having sparred so many rounds with Roy Jones he came out here and said well
00:07:11he doesn't like to get hit because he doesn't take a good punch because he doesn't have much of a heart
00:07:16just the sort of thing that will bring out the RJ and Roy Jones at least that's the way LM sees it
00:07:25Jim you didn't call me JL yeah I was going to tell you to watch out for JL he's a bad dude he's still
00:07:31only 19. um well certainly Lou Duval feels after his 38 rounds of sparring with Roy Jones a few years
00:07:38ago that he has no reason to be scared of Roy Lou after his upbringing doesn't think he has any need to
00:07:44be scared of anything there are a lot of hard guys here to root for him they are his boyhood buddies
00:07:53I was raised on the second floor um you know it was tough but this is where this is where we used to
00:07:59live at Lou Duval like so many boxers was born a street fighting man his initiation battles began
00:08:06and nearly ended in Queens's dangerous QB city projects a life of violence with a grim ending
00:08:13seemingly set in stone I've been in a lot of trouble there's a lot of drugs out there there's a lot of
00:08:20fights it was a lot of there's a lot of you know a lot of bad things going on over there you know a lot
00:08:25of shootouts and surely sooner or later Duval would fall in one of those shootouts after all look at what
00:08:33happened to his friends I used to hang out with a guy named Edgar he died he got killed in a drug war
00:08:41with somebody my other friend Clifford he went to jail my other friend Johnson he's like on drugs I
00:08:47don't know where he's at but like those are the three guys I really hung out with and you know they
00:08:52either in jail dead or you know on drugs this right here is called the avenue that's where all the you
00:08:58know the crazy guys stay at you have all the problems you know all the fights and all that
00:09:03and all that did take control Delval dodged death and drugs but not crime he was nabbed for robbery
00:09:09and locked away for nearly a year at age 15. When I came out of the home juvenile detention I made a
00:09:15promise to myself that I was gonna be a different person and a better person uh like I tell you growing
00:09:21up in a neighborhood I grew up in you know you start thinking the same way your friends think and you
00:09:27think it's the right way to be I used to be down with a lot of crazy things that I shouldn't have
00:09:31been down with but right now I look back at it and I say I was a fool because it was all wrong
00:09:41Deval's mom had seen enough of his incorrigible behavior and moved Lou away from the life-threatening
00:09:46Queensbridge projects he was sent across the East River to the Bronx to live with his grandmother
00:09:51there in the more hospitable Morris Park he discovered a boxing gym
00:09:58I learned how to fight in the streets then that's how I you know I always thought I was
00:10:02going to be a fighter I always knew it was meant for me
00:10:07that's my son right there with a new goal motivation and only eight months of ring experience
00:10:13Deval instantly became a homeboy hero by winning New York's golden gloves championship
00:10:18new sister Melissa was one of his biggest fans and with the brother's inspiration set her own
00:10:28sights on the same prize they became the first and only brother sister champs in golden gloves history
00:10:39so you're coming right front row seats right I got my tickets ready my sister's the best woman
00:10:44fighter in the world and I think that she um takes boxing to another level um she's she's the Roy Jones
00:10:54of women's boxing you know I mean as Melissa developed her own career ironically she met Roy Jones and three
00:11:02years ago arranged for her then up-and-coming brother to spar with him I helped myself sparring with Roy
00:11:09if I could hold my own with Roy Jones and I'm at that championship level and Roy helped me in that
00:11:15sense of becoming champ and though Lou won a vacant world title last September it is still those 38 rounds
00:11:21of sparring with Roy Jones that most pumps his growing confidence I always dreamed of this you know coming
00:11:27back to my own neighborhood and letting people know that I made it and I became son Lou Delval is a long
00:11:33way from the challenges of QB City as tonight he shares center stage with Roy Jones in a third New York
00:11:39borough Manhattan home to Madison Square Garden and home tonight to the dreams Lou Delval wouldn't allow
00:11:47to be snuffed out and we bring it back live to Madison Square Garden for the tale of the tape between Roy
00:11:55Jones and Lou Delval and once again some excellent New York cuisine sampling between the time of the
00:12:01weigh-in and tonight's fight Jones putting on only nine pounds 175 to 184 Duval putting on 17 pounds
00:12:10into just a little bit more than 24 hours since the weigh-in you can see that Duval has a height
00:12:14advantage of an inch he's one year older than Roy Jones the reach is equal two fairly similar physical
00:12:20specimens although as usual Roy presents the more imposing image in the ring punch that numbers Larry
00:12:26uh these numbers come from both of their fights against Virgil Hill as you can see Jones is the more
00:12:34economical and the more accurate puncher and of course he's the bigger power puncher
00:12:41jabs Delval depends on the jab Jones for Jones that was a very high output of jabs
00:12:49against Hill rules of the of the bout with New York's Harold Letterman the Roy Jones Jr. Louie Delval fight
00:12:56is scheduled for 12 rounds using the standardized rules about
00:13:18a 4-8-8-8-8-0-1-4-1-4-2-4-3-6-1-4-2-4-4-2-4.0-2-4-6-1-5338-1-4-4-4.0
00:13:27allllors of the
00:14:18No draws, 19 KOs.
00:14:20The only loss was to Virgil Hill in Hill's home state of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
00:14:25That's the equivalent of going to Russia to fight a winter war.
00:14:33Honey Boy.
00:14:36And now Roy Jones will enter with an elaborate suite of music.
00:14:43All choreographed by Roy Jones himself.
00:14:48Rapper DMX here to accompany Roy into the ring.
00:14:56Whatever inhibitions Roy Jones may have once felt, I think with the coming of Prince Hamed,
00:15:12they've all gone.
00:15:13Yeah, the Prince has loosened everybody up a little.
00:15:26We've got a ring full of smoke.
00:15:30This is not smoke gainer.
00:15:31This is real smoke.
00:15:44One of the songs here is called Second Round Knockout.
00:15:49I wonder if Roy is trying to tell us something.
00:16:54And the fisticuffs break out
00:17:09on Jones' pathway into the ring.
00:17:12Security guards going to work.
00:17:14Madison Square Garden officials were concerned about this entrance for precisely this reason.
00:17:26And to their credit, they added extra security
00:17:29to control any incidents of the kind that you just saw.
00:17:47Jim, on a scale of 10, how do you rate this entrance?
00:17:50I'm putting you on the spot.
00:17:54Among Jones' entrances, it's a 9, okay?
00:17:59But if you're going to ask me to compare it to the Prince, it's a work in progress.
00:18:04Stand back.
00:18:0836 wins, 1 loss, no draws, 31 KOs for the man regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
00:18:1610-1, 7 knockouts in championship fights.
00:18:18The only loss was the disqualification against Montel Griffin in spring of last year
00:18:23for hitting Griffin after he was already down.

00:22:45Let's go.
00:22:45Let's go.
00:22:45Let's go.
00:22:46Everybody outside of the ring
00:22:51except for the second.
00:22:57Come here, Louie.
00:23:00Good evening.
00:23:02Good evening, gentlemen.
00:23:03We went over all the rules
00:23:04in the locker room.
00:23:05I'm here to protect you.
00:23:06Listen to me at all times.
00:23:08Let's touch gloves
00:23:08and have a good, clean fight.
00:23:10Let's go.
00:23:10Touch gloves.
00:23:11Let's go.
00:23:11Come on.
00:23:12There you go.
00:23:12Let's go.
00:23:13Bad blood.
00:23:15These two guys
00:23:16don't like each other.
00:23:18That was not a love kiss.
00:23:22Jones says Delval is a traitor
00:23:24for never having indicated to him
00:23:26when he was sparring with him
00:23:27that he'd like to fight him someday.
00:23:32Delval says that Jones is conceited,
00:23:35stuck up,
00:23:36and needs to be brought down to size.
00:23:40You can see that Delval's a southpaw.
00:23:42Jones has only fought one southpaw
00:23:45previously in his professional career.
00:23:47First-round knockout of Antron Byrd.
00:23:51Delval's chances,
00:23:53he's going to make them a lot.
00:23:54He's got to stay busy,
00:23:55fight three minutes every round.
00:23:58Don't allow this guy to set up
00:24:00or do anything.
00:24:01And, of course,
00:24:01Roy Jones just be himself.
00:24:03Go out there and make sure
00:24:04he doesn't give this guy any confidence.
00:24:06Jones told us
00:24:08he wants to develop a rhythm
00:24:10that will tempt Delval
00:24:12into throwing his pet hunt,
00:24:14his left cross,
00:24:15straight left hand.
00:24:16Sometimes he loops it.
00:24:18Jones says,
00:24:19if Delval will throw that left at me,
00:24:20I'll find a way to counter it.
00:24:23Delval already threw one of them
00:24:25to the body.
00:24:27I imagine Jones is
00:24:28waiting for him to try it again.
00:24:31In the first Montel Griffin fight
00:24:41before the disqualification
00:24:42and in a previous bout
00:24:44against Mike McCallum,
00:24:45Jones showed a tendency
00:24:46to sometimes stand against the ropes
00:24:48and take punishment.
00:24:50Delval will be hoping for that.
00:24:51He needs to stay out
00:24:52of the center of the ring.
00:24:54Delval shaking his head no
00:24:55at Jones' right hand
00:24:56and Jones leads with it again.
00:24:58But Jones did what
00:25:01he should have done earlier.
00:25:02Take the confidence
00:25:03away from this guy.
00:25:04Don't allow yourself
00:25:05to be hit first.
00:25:07Someone's got to land
00:25:07the first punch.
00:25:08Always let it be you.
00:25:11Roy threw a lot of jabs.
00:25:13An uncharacteristic jab out
00:25:15put up close to 24th round
00:25:17in his last fight
00:25:18against Virgil Hill.
00:25:19But against the southpaw,
00:25:20Delval,
00:25:21he may not use the jab at all.
00:25:22Come on, Mike.
00:25:23Come on, Roy.
00:25:23Punch, Mike.
00:25:24That's it.
00:25:24Don't push that to break, Roy.
00:25:25Come on.
00:25:27This is serious.
00:25:28And you can see
00:25:33the taunting
00:25:34that's already going on
00:25:35between the two fighters
00:25:36in the ring.
00:25:43Delval is not able
00:25:44to stop Jones
00:25:45from jumping on him,
00:25:46but he's got to make certain
00:25:47that he gets right back
00:25:48as soon as Roy Jones finishes.
00:25:51Be the first one back.
00:25:55Punch it at you now.
00:25:56Punch it at you.
00:25:56Punch it at you.
00:25:57Punch it at you.
00:25:57Punch it at you.
00:25:58Punch it at you.
00:25:59Punch it at you.
00:26:00Punch it at you.
00:26:00Punch it at you.
00:26:01Punch it at you.
00:26:01Punch it at you.
00:26:06Punch it at you.
00:26:07Punch it at you.
00:26:08Right hand to the body
00:26:09by Jones.
00:26:11Landed in the middle
00:26:11of the chest.
00:26:12Let's go, Roy.
00:26:13Let's go.
00:26:14Little bit of a tactical battle
00:26:15so far because
00:26:17Boltzmann would rather
00:26:18counter than lead.
00:26:20DeVal is having the best
00:26:22of it because he's
00:26:22the heavier guy.
00:26:23When you want to throw
00:26:24a lot of punches
00:26:24early on,
00:26:25it's to the bigger guy's
00:26:26advantage
00:26:27because he's got that weight to make you a little tired.
00:26:34Hard left hand by Jones at the end of round one.
00:26:45All right, Vince.
00:26:49This is my doctor.
00:26:51Bottom part is.
00:26:52There you go.
00:26:53All right.
00:26:54Let's do it.
00:26:57Let's do it.
00:26:57Let's do it.
00:27:04Good work.
00:27:05Good work.
00:27:05Deep breath.
00:27:06All right, baby.
00:27:07Deep breath.
00:27:07Nice and relaxed.
00:27:08Nice and natural.
00:27:09Right.
00:27:09Okay?
00:27:09Faint him.
00:27:10I am a good dog.
00:27:11No, you look very good.
00:27:12Very good.
00:27:12Don't worry.
00:27:12Very good.
00:27:14He's great to fly over.
00:27:15Right.
00:27:16Faint.
00:27:17Faint to him.
00:27:18Nice and relaxed.
00:27:19A lot of faints.
00:27:20End of the round.
00:27:22Roy Jones throws it right and follows it up.
00:27:25Let's go second.
00:27:25With a leaping left.
00:27:28That first round was more about personal stuff between them.
00:27:34For old time's sake, perhaps they'll settle down to a real prize fight from here on out.
00:27:40That'll be interesting to see when punches start to fly.
00:27:43Duvall only threw 31 punches in round one.
00:27:45Jones only threw 26.
00:27:47That's a very low output for both fighters.
00:27:50But both fighters like to pick their opportunities.
00:27:53Neither one is the kind of warrior who's going to throw 75, 80, 90 punches in a round.
00:27:57Now, Duvall was doing the kind of fights that he should be doing.
00:28:01Always fights.
00:28:02Never stop and wait around to see the action.
00:28:05Let's go.
00:28:09Let's go.
00:28:09Let's go.
00:28:10Body punch for Jones.
00:28:11Let's go, fellas.
00:28:12Let's go.
00:28:12And a right hand by Jones as they stepped out of that flinch.
00:28:16And Duvall tries to come back at him and manages to pin Jones against the ropes but lands only to the body.
00:28:23Three body shots, four body shots by Duvall as he leaned in against Roy there.
00:28:29Now, remember, Roy Jones has added to his repertoire the straight left to the body now, so Duvall has better be careful.
00:28:39Chopping right hand over the top by Jones.
00:28:41There's a little bruise on Duvall's right cheek under his right eye.
00:28:47The two men's heads came together over here against the left ropes.
00:28:53The ball swelled in the second round of his battle against Virgil Hill in Grand Forks, North Dakota, under the right eye, just as is the case again tonight.
00:29:06Roy Jones is looping with his left hand now.
00:29:10Straight left should be straight, but he's looping with us.
00:29:15Looking for one good shot, a knockout.
00:29:20No punches, no punches, stop.
00:29:21Step back, step back, good job, good job, let's go.
00:29:25I think we can see we're not going to see any left jabbing out of Roy tonight.
00:29:28No, Roy Jones has been the most successful fighter.
00:29:31Just as I say, he throws a left jab.
00:29:33The most successful fighter in his class without a left jab.
00:29:37Generally, it's a necessity to have a left jab or a right jab, so to speak.
00:29:41Yep.
00:29:42Now Jones in a southpaw stance.
00:29:45Suddenly, Roy switches into southpaw stance, but he doesn't switch and jam.
00:29:50Roy, look up, Roy.
00:29:51Watch it, Roy.
00:29:52Let's go.
00:29:52Watch your heads.
00:29:56Watch your heads.
00:29:57Watch.
00:29:59The ball is doing a good job.
00:30:01Roy Jones shuts everything down once he back touches the rope.
00:30:05Jones still in a southpaw stance.
00:30:13And DelVal, of course, unaccustomed to fighting against a southpaw,
00:30:17backs up and tries to get a look at what Roy is doing.
00:30:26Hard left cross out of the southpaw stance by Jones.
00:30:29And he starts jabbing with the right hand.
00:30:41Neat intentions on those punches.
00:30:44What I like on your southpaw.
00:30:46Right the road to wherever is paved with mean intentions in this game.
00:30:53Didn't land anything.
00:30:55Come on here.
00:30:55I got a point.
00:30:57Okay.
00:30:58You guys, you got that water up.
00:30:59Okay.
00:31:00You told us, huh?
00:31:02No, that's good.
00:31:04Look at jab on your southpaw stance, though.
00:31:06They can go for it.
00:31:07Keep working that jab.
00:31:08I got you, brother.
00:31:08Yeah, boom.
00:31:09You can throw little jabs.
00:31:10Hi.
00:31:11Little jabs.
00:31:11Little fast jabs.
00:31:12Yeah.
00:31:13I'm fainting.
00:31:14You guys, you.
00:31:15Hands up.
00:31:15I'm landing.
00:31:16He's watching.
00:31:17I don't know.
00:31:18Stick to that level.
00:31:19Think of.
00:31:19Hey, let it come natural.
00:31:22Down in.
00:31:23Down in.
00:31:24Down in.
00:31:26Come on.
00:31:30Well, it'll be interesting to see if Jones comes out in his natural, conventional stance
00:31:34or if he comes out to fight a full round as a southpaw.
00:31:37He's starting off in his natural stance.
00:31:41But you heard Alton Merkison, his trainer, telling him to keep throwing the right jab once
00:31:45he switches southpaw.
00:31:46And there he goes.
00:31:47And Duvall immediately attacks when Jones switches feet and tries to land the left over the top.
00:31:54Straight right jab lands for Duvall.
00:31:56Jones retaliating with a left across the top.
00:31:59Larry Merkison, you were highly critical of Oscar De La Hoya last summer when he went to a southpaw stance against Brunel Whitaker.
00:32:12What do you think of Jones doing the same thing here?
00:32:14Well, we had never seen De La Hoya doing it before.
00:32:19We have seen Roy Jones do this before.
00:32:22Sometimes it can be an act of panic because you haven't been able to do what you normally do.
00:32:28I thought that was the case at the time with De La Hoya.
00:32:33But let's see how effective Roy Jones is at it.
00:32:36Why did the most dominant fighter on the planet beneath the heavyweight division have to change to the other guy?
00:32:45Why does he make the other guy change to him?
00:32:48Well, this guy's an athlete.
00:32:50Basketball, football, anything.
00:32:52So it's probably natural for him to do things that no one expects him to do.
00:32:56And you saw the exchange along the ropes.
00:33:00De La Hoya getting the better of the first half of the exchange.
00:33:03And then Roy Jones turning the tables as it closed out.
00:33:07De La Hoya is able to come back and jab or do something after Jones finishes his stuff.
00:33:12He can be in his fish shape when this fight wears on.
00:33:16Jones with a right hook out of his southpaw stance.
00:33:19And the left cross there.
00:33:21De La Hoya trying to indicate with his facial expressions to Jones
00:33:25that Roy's not getting anything done with this unusual strategy
00:33:28of having switched to full-time southpaw in the third round.
00:33:33And Jones trying to leap and land that left across the top.
00:33:37You know, the way Roy Jones fights, it's so unorthodox, throwing so few jabs.
00:33:42It almost seems that it doesn't matter which side he's fighting from.
00:33:46He's an athlete.
00:33:47Some of these guys are so athletic that generally most fighters start off
00:33:51in the southpaw position anyway, and they have to be corrected.
00:33:54So he's probably spent a lot of years doing that in the gym anyway.
00:33:57You know, if he was a writer, he could write score from left to right
00:34:01or right to left and write a great book either way.
00:34:04This is the only time that the foul is effective
00:34:11when he keeps Roy Jones against the road.
00:34:14Get him there and keep him there.
00:34:16It takes a lot of energy to do that.
00:34:18No punches.
00:34:19No punches, fellas.
00:34:20No punches.
00:34:20Just watch ahead, okay?
00:34:22Let's go.
00:34:25Round three coming to a close.
00:34:27There haven't been a lot of clean punches landed.
00:34:31There have been a lot of mean glares
00:34:33between two fighters who clearly are not friends.
00:34:39DelVal is trying to frustrate Roy Jones.
00:34:42He may not be winning the fight,
00:34:45but he is causing some frustration.
00:34:49Put that cup in.
00:34:50Okay.
00:34:51All right.
00:34:51Light up.
00:34:52You got him frustrated now.
00:34:54You got him in check.
00:34:55He ain't doing nothing.
00:34:55You're freezing him, okay?
00:34:57What do I do?
00:34:58Keep the body longer.
00:35:02Fake him if you don't want to do anything.
00:35:03If you don't want to throw the punch, fake him.
00:35:05Deep breath.
00:35:06Deep breath.
00:35:08Doing good.
00:35:09Okay?
00:35:10A little more fake and a little more jab.
00:35:12Throw it up to the body.
00:35:13Let me keep the gold on it, though.
00:35:15Left to the body after the jab.
00:35:17Watch for it.
00:35:18When you're ready.
00:35:20All right.
00:35:20DelVal calls himself Honey Boy
00:35:22because honey in the gym he grew up in
00:35:25is the ability to take a punch.
00:35:28There you see Roy Jones landing with clean left hand.
00:35:31It's done a lot of damage to a lot of fighters.
00:35:34DelVal took it.
00:35:37He got a taste of Roy Jones Honey.
00:35:39DelVal in the third round only threw 22 punches.
00:35:45That activity level is not going to win him the fight.
00:35:49Harold Lutterman, how do you have it through the first three?
00:35:51Jim, I've got a grid in that from 30 to 27.
00:35:55Roy Jones Jr.
00:35:57Meanwhile, the crowd goes crazy
00:35:59as DelVal begins scoring in the corner.
00:36:04He's throwing punches.
00:36:05He's not the one holding on, though.
00:36:07Roy Jones has his hand cuffed under there.
00:36:09And referee Jim Santa just pulling the two fighters apart.
00:36:14No warning on either side.
00:36:16Jones thought he was being held.
00:36:18You heard George Foreman say,
00:36:19no, no, Roy was doing the holding.
00:36:21And DelVal had his best flurry of the fight.
00:36:27Body shots from Jones.
00:36:28Keep going.
00:36:30DelVal corner told him,
00:36:32if you're not going to do anything else, just faint.
00:36:34But Roy Jones, if you faint and don't do something,
00:36:36you'll clean your house.
00:36:38It's not a good idea to faint.
00:36:43There you go, Roy.
00:36:44Come on, Roy.
00:36:44Box fell.
00:36:45Let's go, you box the way out.
00:36:46Let's go.
00:36:46That's it.
00:36:46Good job.
00:36:47Good job.
00:36:53I've always thought of Jones
00:36:54as one of the masters of fainting other fighters.
00:36:57DelVal said he's susceptible to faints.
00:36:59You can move him around by fainting him.
00:37:01Yeah, but Roy Jones fights such a good fight with his eyes
00:37:05that you're not going to trick him much.
00:37:08He's doing the fainting.
00:37:18Jones is throwing so many hard punches.
00:37:21It'll be interesting to see
00:37:22how his conditioning holds up
00:37:24over the course of the fight.
00:37:25He's taking this fight on extremely short notice
00:37:28given his past habits as a businessman.
00:37:31And another thing that's developed into a light heavyweight fight.
00:37:35It's no longer that middleweight thing happening now.
00:37:37So this is not good for Roy Jones.
00:37:39He's going to have to keep his quickness up,
00:37:41not go into the corners
00:37:43and allow this big guy to hit him in the side.
00:37:45Good body punch by Roy Jones.
00:37:49Another good body punch.
00:37:51Jones going to the middle of DelVal's belly with success.
00:37:54Over and over.
00:37:55He's landed about five excellent body shots in this round.
00:37:59And that's what it sets up
00:38:00when you land to the body.
00:38:09Leroy Neiman, the artist, is here.
00:38:12And sometimes these two fighters look like they're posing for him.
00:38:16Ha ha ha ha.
00:38:28Roy Jones just takes such pot shots
00:38:30that you've got to be active.
00:38:32You've got to be doing something all the time.
00:38:34Otherwise, you can get hurt.
00:38:35This Turk ain't going to take no chances.
00:38:47You lay it out there.
00:38:48Where do you get the right hands in?
00:38:50Tower, right in my face.
00:38:52We're going to put my thumb in, baby.
00:38:53I ain't.
00:38:54I ain't.
00:38:54I got you.
00:38:55I got you.
00:38:56I got you.
00:38:57He risked his mouth.
00:38:58He's out.
00:38:58I ain't going.
00:39:00Why don't you hit him every once in a while
00:39:01like you're hitting him.
00:39:02This Turk can't going to take no chances.
00:39:04He can come in.
00:39:04He's probably fighting defense.
00:39:05He knows.
00:39:07He already knows what we're going to do.
00:39:08Just stick with your game.
00:39:10Baby, baby, listen to him.
00:39:11Listen to him.
00:39:12Left hand hard.
00:39:12Body set it up.
00:39:13Okay, he's falling back on him.
00:39:15That's it.
00:39:16Deep breath, baby.
00:39:18There you see DelVal with his best punch.
00:39:21Clean shot on the jaw.
00:39:23Now he holds hips and tries to rough Jones up.
00:39:29That was early in the round.
00:39:31Jones dominated the second half of the round.
00:39:34Hard right hand.
00:39:36Oddly enough, to the right side of DelVal's jaw.
00:39:42This is a fight that in some passages is so awkward and unorthodox,
00:39:48you don't know which punch is going to land on which side of the fight it, George.
00:39:53And Harold Letterman's card still clean as he gives every round so far to Roy Jones.
00:39:57George, I agree.
00:40:03Give it up, give it up.
00:40:04The thing that's so good about Roy Jones, though he has good power shots on the tops,
00:40:09continuously goes back to the body.
00:40:10Yeah, I was just getting ready to say, the best work he's done tonight are those body shots.
00:40:20It's been 16 months since Jones' disqualification against Montel Griffin in the first Griffin fight.
00:40:25Coming into tonight, he had fought 12 minutes and 42 seconds total in those 16 months.
00:40:32So he's already fought more tonight for a longer period of time than was the case in the whole 16 months since his only loss.
00:40:41And we haven't seen the Southpaw's dance since the end of the third round.
00:40:55So Jones is going back to his conventional style now after having given DelVal something to think about
00:41:01with a round and a half of Southpaw fighting.
00:41:04Now he's got his eyes wide open on DelVal and landing with those straight left hands.
00:41:11Jones with some showmanship and a repeated series of right hands.
00:41:19And DelVal trying to indicate that Jones isn't doing damage, but he's landing and landing again.
00:41:26I don't know if this is a dance or a fight or both.
00:41:30A dancing fight.
00:41:36Roy brought an entourage of rap musicians with him tonight.
00:41:40And he's trying to impress them on both fronts.
00:41:43Footwork and fist work.
00:41:49Some strange stuff going on in there.
00:41:56Straight left hand to the body by DelVal at the time.
00:41:58Once a guy goes off on you a few times, just go back to his body.
00:42:03Don't get excited.
00:42:04Don't lean him right, Henry. Come on. Let's go.
00:42:06No, no, no.
00:42:13Yeah, DelVal somehow got to ignore all of Jones' unconventional brilliance
00:42:18and stick to the business at hand.
00:42:21And I think he'd do well to stay with the body, George.
00:42:24Yeah, uh, Roy Jones is landing some effective shots now.
00:42:28It's a matter of, uh, DelVal just waiting to be cleaned out if he doesn't get active.
00:42:32Can't wait around on Roy Jones.
00:42:34Five seconds. Five seconds. Two seconds. Time.
00:42:38Good job.
00:42:40Let's get some water.
00:43:04Water. Water. Water.
00:43:06Let's get some water.
00:43:08Use some water.
00:43:10there we see a an apache dance of violence before he punches
00:43:26later in the round he lands a clean right hand right there
00:43:31well you heard joe de gardia lou deval's manager telling him that he thinks he's doing
00:43:40well but deval only through 26 punches in the fifth round he's always through twice his
00:43:45minute he's averaging 10 punches landed per round that won't get it but deval as he put
00:43:52it although he's making it by far the biggest person in his career a total of 850 thousand
00:43:58dollars and he's fighting for respect and you can see he does have passion in there and
00:44:05he is fighting for his hometown fans and going this far with roy jones in itself is
00:44:11an accomplishment off of jones recent form you gotta be dedicated to your training at
00:44:18this point you're not winning a fight but something can happen if you keep your stance
00:44:23use your jail you can make things happen you gotta believe that if you're a boxer first
00:44:29light heavyweight unification bout in 15 years since michael spinks unified the title against
00:44:35white braxton in atlantic city in 1983
00:44:37jones is showing some really hard jabs here for him
00:44:44we've seen him in the past throw some of those 12 inch jams
00:44:49really faint some of the best body punches i've seen thrown in every division that was a vicious
00:44:55body shot of course you remember that jones knocked virgil hill out with a single body shot
00:45:03to the left side of hill's rib cage three punch combination with the right hand roy says oh
00:45:09you don't think i hurt you with that we'll take some more
00:45:11now when you start throwing reckless punches like that to the body you run into the upper
00:45:17and you end up hurting your own hand jones may get his right hand in the top
00:45:21i think deval spending entirely too much time offering commentary on roy's work and not enough
00:45:28time working himself yeah well a fight can be seen as as a violent dialogue but they're having
00:45:35words as well as fistic dialogue it's just that deval is not answering with his fists
00:45:44often enough another body shot from jones makes deval jumps and jumps in the air
00:45:50deval's only thrown 10 punches so far in this round
00:45:56with that kind of power roy jones belongs in the heavyweights
00:46:00hard right hand inside by jones he keeps this up he's going to start painting deval's face
00:46:07as the rounds go by and you can see there's swelling under deval's left eye now to go with
00:46:14the swelling under his right eye so jones has begun to make deval's cheekbones expand
00:46:20protect yourself protect yourself and again jones switches to the southpaw stance
00:46:28so once again the tactical wrinkle which obviously he put in just for this fight
00:46:35three seconds jones jabbing with the right hand and crossing with the left
00:46:40i don't want you laying there keep those hands up very up high let them come straight out from
00:46:56high he's getting tired from high up yeah he's taking the steam's coming out of his punch
00:47:00here's the body shot it was a shot like that that ended the fight against virgil hill later in the round
00:47:26a winging right hand landed high on the cheekbone didn't do a lot of damage
00:47:34round seven begins harold letterman how do you have it through six six to nothing
00:47:4416 to 54 roy jones jr jim i wanted to say the last time before that action hit it up
00:47:49and i think the reason roy jones went southpaw was definitely because louis davali would come in
00:47:53when roy jones would be squared up right in front of him good good good shot by deval
00:47:58and in order to get away from louis but he went southpaw
00:48:03deval actually believed that roy jones is tired
00:48:10i think you may be on to something there harold and i think you are too george
00:48:14as deval suddenly awakens to new aggression
00:48:17body shots
00:48:21and deval beginning to ask referee jim santa for a little help against the body shots
00:48:27and you heard santa say no it was right there
00:48:30jones going back to the body pumping the left hand
00:48:34this referee santa was scheduled to be the referee of the heavyweight championship fight
00:48:48between evander holyfield and henry akarwande it was canceled here june 6th the ball's going
00:48:53to have trouble punching if he jumps in the air every time roy hits him in the body george
00:48:56yeah that doesn't make you jump he believes that the punches are going too low deval does the
00:49:02the referee seems not to think as much
00:49:05wait a second time time give me a towel time time now to try to wipe a wet spot in the ring
00:49:15so yeah santa was going to do holyfield akarwande before that cancellation
00:49:21therefore it's appropriate that he gets to do the next big fight here in new york and this is it
00:49:32the ball has got something we've got to point out he's got real power he gets beat up but he still
00:49:42maintains the aggression
00:49:50jones's right hand landed on the shoulders
00:49:53and roy back in his conventional stance but still with that unconventional game out of it
00:50:11boy just strafing bill vile's belly with body shots yeah and if he lands too many more of those
00:50:16so deval is going to go down because of it just missed with the left over the top and got butted
00:50:23in the eye so their heads do come together and it's lou deval who pays the price uh he has cut
00:50:30many times before i i thought i saw roy sort of apologized to him it obviously was not a deliberate
00:50:39fight but this fight will not go on more than another round or two with a cut like that it appears well you
00:50:45you heard harold letterman saying that he thought roy had switched southpaw
00:50:49to avoid that kind of budding they were in the normal configuration with deval fighting southpaw
00:50:54roy and his conventional stance and boom the heads came together as had been the case once back in
00:50:59round number two before roy went to the southpaw stand no stay together and listen to joe al gavin one of
00:51:08the very best cutmen alive going to work for lou deval he's going to have to do as good a job as
00:51:15he's ever done before on an eye to make this one work straight out look at that eye one not right
00:51:21no accident looks like a very very bad cut i know i got it okay watch those low balls
00:51:32well let's take a look at the butt larry now there you see left-hander against the right-hander
00:51:37they both start to throw punches and come in at the same time
00:51:46result blood on the floor okay blood on the eye one of the unfortunate realities of the sport
00:51:58all right harold now we're past the midway point of the fight what happens if the bout is stopped
00:52:03because of that cut jim beyond the fourth round under the rules of the association of boxers
00:52:07commissioners if this fight is stopped because of that cut we go to the score cards whoever's ahead
00:52:13on the score cards wins they don't deduct any points you know from uncut guys or anything like that
00:52:18but they will go to the score cards in case the fight is stopped you know on account of that
00:52:23accidental headbutt and just to reaffirm your scorecard still a shutout right absolutely seven
00:52:28runs to nothing 70 to 63. so jones is in a good position if they stop the fight and in the last
00:52:33round deval only threw 21 punches that's after he threw 15 punches in the round before he just hasn't
00:52:38been able to mount a consistent attack against jones's body assault well his hope was as i suggested
00:52:46earlier jim frustrate roy jones hope that he's in better shape and make something happen in the second
00:52:51fight doesn't look like that's going to work he has to throw everything oil question out and try to
00:52:59get get some damage in make something happen here very quickly
00:53:07good body punch again deval literally cringing when jones comes at him with the right hand to the body
00:53:14that jones is going to think that right a straight uh right hand pretty soon and go straight up top
00:53:19and he won't have any problem landing
00:53:31you know i don't remember before the virgin hill fight roy jones throwing an awful lot of body
00:53:36punches but he has suddenly discovered it and has fallen in love with the idea of throwing body punches
00:53:42once you see those kind of returns you have to go back to it well you know he really developed a
00:53:46respect for mike mccallum when he fought mccallum and spent time with mccallum before the fight
00:53:50maybe mccallum one of the great body punchers in the last 25 years in the sport said to him roy your
00:53:56life would be so much easier if you do what i do
00:53:57good left hand by deval never before knocked down roy jones cleanly knocked down on a straight left
00:54:13by lou deval that's the hardest punch i've ever seen roy jones take
00:54:18he's been thinking all night roy jones is getting tired he though he was being hurt he kept the
00:54:33confidence that this guy is running out of steam well and his only loss deval knocked down virgil hill
00:54:39with a straight left hand now in trouble against roy jones he produces knockout light or knock
00:54:46knock down lightning again now roy jones is doing an excellent job of holding on there's nothing wrong
00:54:52with holding on it's professional right yeah you go to your corner now that stool should be in the corner
00:54:59before before he gets there doral earned the applause of his fans with that tremendous punch what a shot
00:55:12just a devastating left hand a slim dunk let's keep your hand
00:55:16here comes the knockdown roy turned his head as you saw never had an idea the punch was coming
00:55:34because his head was turned away watch his watch him turn away right there
00:55:41this is what happened when you get hit by a light heavyweight
00:55:44he's a heavyweight by this by this time you know we've often asked
00:55:49what would roy jones do if he ever got in trouble if he ever really got hurt
00:55:54perhaps we have a chance to see it tonight well as as george pointed out he showed the
00:56:00professionalism of knowing how to stop the clock in effect and hold on to get out of the round
00:56:06then he came back to the corner with triumphant body language let's see if he can go back to doing
00:56:11what he was doing now he's gonna have to use this jab respect this guy because that extra weight
00:56:19deval has something left in these last few rounds well if we showed you deval
00:56:23put on 17 pounds since the weigh-in and came here tonight at 192
00:56:26eight pounds more than jones who weighed 184
00:56:29there's a wet spot there and that is exactly the spot at which jones went down come on not to say
00:56:40that it wasn't a great punch by deval but there is a wet spot
00:56:47no jim it's on the far side of the ring over there let's go
00:56:50wow i don't think they got the wet spot you know the wet spots are going to affect roy jones
00:56:55most because he's spreading his legs so far apart and expecting to be able to jump up and move
00:57:00and also he's the one that's making the ring wet look at the look at the water dripping from his
00:57:06trunks jim harold wet spot comment okay jim look alton murkison is soaking roy jones down in
00:57:14between rounds i mean he came out with those trunks sulking the executive director of the state
00:57:19athletic commission tony russo is in the corner right now with orc murkison showing him out the
00:57:24reason they're slipping is because jones has got so much water in those trunks that is dripping off
00:57:29there's water all over the ring and they're slipping on the wet spots tony russo is giving it to
00:57:33orc murkison with both barrels right now well done harold russo thought his hardest job tonight
00:57:39was going to be to clear the ring before the referee's instructions there's that slippery ring
00:57:46again affecting roy jones the bowels should be working this jab working this jab forgetting everything
00:57:54else that punch will come again owens going back to working straight rights and not to the body now
00:58:02he's going right at lou deval's bruised and bleeding left off
00:58:19al gavin must have done some job on that eye to keep deval in the fight and roy jones has not
00:58:26exploited it up to now he has not tried to land one shot on it out which i think is really
00:58:32professional he want to win and he wanted to win easily didn't want to go for a cut there are a
00:58:39handful of brilliant cut men in the sport you saw the miracle that joe souza put together with arturo
00:58:45gotti here in the garden a couple years ago against wilson rodriguez susan's one of them gavin is certainly
00:58:50another
00:58:57Roy dealt with the knockdown by being just a little bit more cautious.
00:59:22Alright, we're going to the 10. Don't worry about trying to hit this trigger with no big shot.
00:59:28Let's hit him with a lot of small shots. He took some good shots, okay?
00:59:32Put that towel on his shoulder, man. On his shoulder.
00:59:36Okay? He got you.
00:59:43We got three more rounds. We got to get about them big shots.
00:59:46Let's touch him over.
00:59:52Right, baby. Just like in the gym. Deep breath. Doing beautiful. Beautiful.
00:59:58Use those hands, baby. Use those hands. Those hands up. And use the jab. Work on this round.
01:00:10Well, unless there's something unusual going on with the scoring,
01:00:13Duvall shouldn't have to worry too much about whether he's winning rounds.
01:00:19Jones should have that situation well in hand.
01:00:22But the first fight was scored much more closely by the official judges than would have been the case here among us at ringside.
01:00:29And let's see how Harold Letterman has it going into the 10th of a Schedule 12.
01:00:34I got right way ahead. 88, 88, 82. Eight rounds to one. Roy Jones Jr.
01:00:39I think he's in complete control of his fight outside of that store. Eighth round when he got trapped.
01:00:44You know, he just keeps landing a stronger, harder punch.
01:00:47He's always got to pick up the action and try and get him out of here.
01:00:49But I'll tell you something. In that quarter again, Kirkerson was taking out water and dumping it over Roy Jones' head.
01:00:55And he's doing the same thing. Soaking that ring down.
01:00:57Hope somebody doesn't fall on their face, Chip.
01:00:59But Roy Jones is out punching him.
01:01:01All right.
01:01:05Lou Duvall's never had a knockout beyond the eighth round.
01:01:07He probably needs one now.
01:01:09Jones looking down at wet canvas underneath his feet.
01:01:12I think that he, uh, Roy Jones fell asleep in that round. He got knocked down.
01:01:22Now he's alert. He was counting on the referee, maybe looking at this guy's eye too much.
01:01:28And he certainly started to do what you suggested when he was landing those straight rights to the body.
01:01:33You said he was going to come upstairs soon.
01:01:35Now he has made that change.
01:01:36It is time to do that.
01:01:38But Duvall has got no respect for Roy Jones' power.
01:01:43Doesn't matter how hard he hits him, he comes right back and tries to get one in.
01:01:47Well, but not often enough to throw punches in bunches.
01:01:51I mean, Duvall is still throwing 20, 25 punches a round.
01:01:55It's not an activity level that's going to win round four.
01:01:58At this point, he's looking for a knockout. No doubt about it.
01:02:00He knows now that he has the power to put this guy down.
01:02:04And every time a referee stops this fight for any reason, it's for Roy Jones' advantage.
01:02:11Stops the action for anything. Roy Jones' benefit.
01:02:15Time! Time! Time!
01:02:18Fix this. Time!
01:02:19And this is going to be a loose tape on the glove situation.
01:02:22Jim Santa with a lot of situations to deal with tonight in a very active evening of referees.
01:02:28I kind of like the work that Santa does.
01:02:32I particularly like the way he apprises the fighters carefully as to how much time is left in each round.
01:02:39He's a good referee. There's been some good referees tonight. Period.
01:02:43Well, McCarty Jr. learned from his dad.
01:02:45Time! Let's go!
01:02:46Time!
01:02:46Time!
01:02:46Time!
01:02:47Time!
01:02:47Time!
01:02:48Time!
01:02:48Time!
01:02:49Time!
01:02:49Time!
01:02:50Time!
01:02:50Time!
01:02:51Time!
01:02:51Time!
01:02:52Time!
01:02:52Time!
01:02:53Time!
01:02:53Time!
01:02:54Time!
01:02:54Time!
01:02:55Time!
01:02:55Time!
01:02:56Time!
01:02:57Time!
01:02:58Time!
01:02:59Sometimes when someone hits you with a straight left like Duvall did earlier, Roy Jones should
01:03:03adjust his defense. Bring his hand a little closer to his face.
01:03:06Let's go! Let's go, Roy! Let's go, Roy! Let's go, Roy!
01:03:09He haven't done as much, so that punch is still there for Duvall.
01:03:13Jones smiling at trainer Alton Merkerson as he clinched momentarily there with Duvall.
01:03:19Jones landing the straight rights now, foregoing the body punching, which sustained him throughout
01:03:24most of the fight. Duvall trying for another one of straight lefts of the fight.
01:03:27Straight lefts of his own and just miss it.
01:03:29It's there all night for him because Roy Jones has not adjusted his defense.
01:03:33Duvall hit him with a good straight left a minute ago that did shake him a little bit.
01:03:37You think Roy's just too arrogant to adjust his defense?
01:03:41You think he's just too arrogant to adjust his defense?
01:03:44They have a lot to do with it.
01:03:47Next month, Boxing After Dark returns with the exciting Arturo Gatti.
01:03:52Just mentioned him a little while ago facing Ivan Robinson in a lightweight matchup and junior
01:03:57middleweight sensation Fernando Vargas taking on Jose Antonio Rivera.
01:04:01Saturday, August 22 on HBO.
01:04:04Fernando Vargas, if you have not seen him, you book this day right now and make sure that
01:04:11you see Boxing After Dark because you must see Vargas.
01:04:14Vaseline, don't worry about it.
01:04:16You're still going to be a movie actor and a champion with two bolts.
01:04:22I don't think I've ever seen a corner do a better job on an eye because that was really,
01:04:51an ugly cut.
01:04:53It was a deep cut.
01:04:58Well, we've covered Gavin with glory and deservedly so for the work he's done in keeping
01:05:03Lou Duvall in the fight and remember, the knockdown occurred after the cut.
01:05:10You know, the stoppage of the action really benefits Roy Jones.
01:05:13I don't know why they don't get there and tie that glove up and keep it tied.
01:05:19Taked up correctly.
01:05:22Every time they have the stop in action, Roy Jones refreshes himself.
01:05:27And you don't want a Roy Jones refreshed.
01:05:33You know, early on in the fight, Roy was trying to put some serious hurt on Duvall.
01:05:42We heard that rap song with KO in two rounds.
01:05:46It appears now that he is satisfied to go home with the victory.
01:05:51If he gets a big opening, he might take it, but he's not pressing the point anymore.
01:05:57And surely the Duvall contention will lobby for a rematch.
01:06:01Oh, maybe not.
01:06:03Straight right hand landed for Jones and another delay.
01:06:07This one may have helped Duvall.
01:06:09Stay with there, stay with there.
01:06:10Time, let's go.
01:06:11A lot of delays should have refreshed Roy Jones, I'm telling you.
01:06:16Every time a delay comes, Roy Jones get a little energy.
01:06:19Okay, time in.
01:06:20Let's go.
01:06:21That's the fifth delay I count.
01:06:24Given Roy's unorthodox style, given Duvall's left-handed style.
01:06:45Same punch that knocked him down a moment ago, he gets caught with again.
01:06:50And you're right, he still hasn't adjusted his defense.
01:06:52You've got to adjust your defense, you just can't go to your corner and your corner agrees with you.
01:06:57We've got to give you some kind of instruction.
01:07:03But just as Duvall has been able to land hard left, Jones is able to come back with hard rights.
01:07:13Duvall jumping off the canvas to try to protect himself against body shots.
01:07:19Which is wise.
01:07:22I haven't seen you do that, George.
01:07:24The day I see you jumping off the canvas.
01:07:26The day you see me jump.
01:07:28You think he's trying to make the body punch land low by jumping up over it?
01:07:35Well, it throws Roy Jones off.
01:07:37It's like a moving target.
01:07:44Roy Jones is trying to mix it up, but this does not benefit Roy Jones to mix it up with this big guy.
01:07:49This guy has shown that he has power.
01:07:51It's a matter of just picking that right hand up and just putting it on the opposite side of your face.
01:07:59You don't get caught anymore.
01:08:00Look out, Louie.
01:08:02Come on, Roy.
01:08:03Get your arms back.
01:08:04That's it, fellas.
01:08:05Good job.
01:08:06Good job.
01:08:07No punches.
01:08:08No punches.
01:08:09No punches.
01:08:10No punches.
01:08:11Step back.
01:08:11This has been another low activity round for Duvall.
01:08:16With the exception of the one hard straight left hand that he landed.
01:08:20Hasn't had a chance to throw many punches.
01:08:23Jones with a much bigger punch output and landing consistently with straight right hand.
01:08:39Well, I don't think Roy Jones Jr. expected to go 12 rounds tonight.
01:08:43No round, baby.
01:08:44No, I think he came out as R.J. early in the fight, but he's Roy Jones at this point in the fight.
01:08:50I thought you slipped.
01:08:51I did kind of slipped, but he was a good damn shot.
01:08:54He was going to kill him.
01:08:56It was water.
01:08:57I want to hear you.
01:08:58Water.
01:08:59Use those hands.
01:09:00Water.
01:09:01Water, water, Victor.
01:09:02Use those hands.
01:09:03All right.
01:09:04Hands up.
01:09:05Use them.
01:09:06When you're getting off, he's just back in the middle.
01:09:07Right, right.
01:09:08Okay?
01:09:09Use them.
01:09:10You've heard them before.
01:09:11You'll do it again.
01:09:12Water, Victor.
01:09:13Victor, walk him.
01:09:14Come on, baby.
01:09:15Come on.
01:09:16Look at this shit.
01:09:17Damn.
01:09:19All right.
01:09:20There, PV!
01:09:21Pull.
01:09:22Go!
01:09:23Let him go with the有點ANE.
01:09:25Let him go.
01:09:26Oh, stationary.
01:09:27Let him go, man.
01:09:28Let him go!
01:09:29Let's go, man.
01:09:30Let's go, man.
01:09:35The valley's in the position that David Reed was in during the Olympics, hoping that one
01:09:40Hoping that one big punch can turn around the result.
01:09:45Wealth of a scheduled 12.
01:09:47Lou Duvall needs a big left hand to score the upset victory over Roy Jones.
01:09:54Jones needs to hope that he's not going to be victimized by a hometown Gardenside decision against him.
01:10:02But these are WBC judges, not New York judges.
01:10:05Jones is taking a lot of chances, he's been a little extra courteous.
01:10:17Anything can happen in a minute, in two minutes.
01:10:22Duvall's corner told him, you've got that straight left hand over earlier, you can do it again.
01:10:27Watch it, watch it, watch your head, Louie.
01:10:29Louie, watch your head, come on, come on, let go.
01:10:32Let's watch, let go, come on, come on.
01:10:35Well, whatever else he gets out of this fight, guys, he'll be able to relive that knockdown of Roy Jones for the rest of his life.
01:10:50Man, it was like a slam dunk, body slam, I mean.
01:10:54First time Jones has ever been knocked down in a professional fight.
01:10:58And he's halfway now to Oscar De La Hoya's total.
01:11:02De La Hoya's been knocked down twice, much earlier in his career.
01:11:06And De La Hoya's been knocked down twice, I had him down, and did I have him down good?
01:11:11I had him down in New York, in front of all my buddies.
01:11:14Well, this will be a moral victory for Del Val and his hometown.
01:11:21Because of the high expectations any time Roy Jones comes into the ring, because of his reputation as the best fighter in the world south of the heavyweight division.
01:11:33Now the foul is holding on.
01:11:51This is not what he wanted to do in four to two seconds.
01:11:54Let's go.
01:11:55Well, because of their unorthodox styles, George, it's almost like two guys trying to converse in different languages sometimes.
01:12:03They just sort of fall all over each other.
01:12:05Yeah, it's happening over and over.
01:12:07A couple rounds ago, you heard shut man Al Gavin tell Lou Duvall, it's okay, you're still going to be a movie star and a world champion with two belts.
01:12:18Well, maybe he'll be a movie star.
01:12:22You never know about these judges.
01:12:24You've got to win these boxing matches.
01:12:26You've got to win them with the guy on the canvas.
01:12:30Three seconds, three seconds.
01:12:31Well, Lloyd-Jones talking is closing the show.
01:12:37The ball apparently too exhausted to do much in the last couple minutes of that round.
01:12:42The tall gentleman talking to Lou Duvall, that's Al Gavin, the cut man who heroically kept the ball in the fight and gave him his chance to knock Roy Jones down.
01:13:11Let him breathe, let him breathe.
01:13:14Let him get there, let him get there.
01:13:19Harold Letterman, your final scorecard.
01:13:21Jim, 118, 109, 11 routes to one, Roy Jones Jr.
01:13:26I just thought, the story is he out-punched him.
01:13:29I mean, he's just too great an athlete, but it certainly was, you know, a rocky one story for Lou Duvall.
01:13:35He went the distance, nobody thought he'd go the distance.
01:13:38Amazing that he takes such a great punch, you know?
01:13:40And, I mean, I thought Roy did, you know, most of his shtick for us.
01:13:44I like that walkaway move that he stole from Jersey Joe Walker.
01:13:47He walks away, turns around and whacks him.
01:13:49The shuffling of the feet, I mean, I think we saw it all tonight.
01:13:52Just about the wobbling of the knees.
01:13:54I mean, he did everything to Lou Duvall but shoe shine him.
01:13:57So, Roy Jones, what a decisive victory.
01:14:00You got a big laugh from George, Harold.
01:14:02No, because he's telling it like it is.
01:14:04There are millions at home having just as good a time as you're having, George.
01:14:07Highlights of the fight.
01:14:09In early action, Roy Jones was able to dominate with greater punch output.
01:14:15He landed straight right hands.
01:14:17He went to a conventional stance and landed left crosses out of that conventional stance.
01:14:22He landed the right upstairs and downstairs and dominated through rounds three, four, five, and six.
01:14:29With stylish action like that.
01:14:35Right hands to the body.
01:14:38Lifting Duvall off the canvas.
01:14:40Then in the seventh round, the unfortunate moment when their heads came together.
01:14:44And the horrible cut that ensued over Duvall's left eye.
01:14:47And then in the eighth round, Roy Jones knocked down for the first time ever on a straight left hand from Duvall that landed right on the button.
01:14:57Jones was able to come back from that and get the better of his man in the closing rounds.
01:15:04And we'll now see if the judges saw it the way we did.
01:15:07Michael Buffer.
01:15:08Ladies and gentlemen, we go to the Budweiser scorecards.
01:15:10Fred Ucci scores the ballot 118 to 109.
01:15:14Marty Denkin has it 118 to 109.
01:15:17And Dwayne Forrest calls it 119 to 108 for the winner who is now the unified WBC, WBA, light heavyweight champion of the world.
01:15:28And he is Roy Jones, Jr.
01:15:34So it turns out to be a lopsided unanimous decision.
01:15:39As one judge has it even more one-sidedly than Harold did.
01:15:44Harold did a great job this time.
01:15:46Harold called this number.
01:15:47Well, Harold always does a great job, George.
01:15:49Sometimes the other guys don't go as good a job.
01:15:52I knew him when he was young and he was doing a good job.
01:15:55Harold, you don't think he's still young?
01:15:57Yeah, no.
01:15:57By your standards, he is.
01:16:01So Jones celebrating.
01:16:05I deserve that.
01:16:06You talk on right, you did.
01:16:08I heard you were going to fight somebody when you were 50, but I don't know.
01:16:12Final punch stat numbers.
01:16:14Jones landing 233 out of 483.
01:16:17Deval 113 out of 286.
01:16:20And it's as simple as that.
01:16:21That's the reason why Jones won a lopsided decision on the final scorecards.
01:16:26Particularly the body punching with the right hand.
01:16:28Very effective throughout the fight.
01:16:30He had his old friend Mullins to come in and help him.
01:16:34Yeah, he had Keith Mullins, the 154-pound world champion.
01:16:36He knew that this fight would be tough.
01:16:37Sparred with him getting ready for the fight.
01:16:40And you can see that Jones threw 132 jabs.
01:16:43I wonder how many were southpaw jabs thrown with the right hand
01:16:46and how many were conventional stance jabs with the left hand.
01:16:50Probably pretty evenly split.
01:16:52Good jab landing percentage for Jones at 43%.
01:16:55Tough to do that against a southpaw.
01:16:59Let's go to Larry Merchant on the ring.
01:17:01Thank you, Jim.
01:17:03Congratulations, Roy.
01:17:04You got more belts than Saks Fifth Avenue hanging on you tonight.
01:17:08But that was, well, you describe it.
01:17:11You wanted to go out there and get him quickly, but he was very tough to get.
01:17:16Well, I really wasn't going to be able to.
01:17:17First of all, I'd take time out.
01:17:18Thank God for giving me everything I got.
01:17:21And still, the baddest man on the planet.
01:17:23But that's why I don't want to fight Sparrow Partners.
01:17:25Sparrow Partners know you.
01:17:26Eventually, they've learned enough where they can catch up with you and catch you with something good.
01:17:29They caught up with a good shot, but I'm a true champion.
01:17:30I won't stop.
01:17:31I won't quit.
01:17:31Everybody wanted to see how Roy Jones was going to deal with some kind of adversity one of these days,
01:17:38and you finally had it when he knocked you down.
01:17:40What was that like for you?
01:17:41I was shocked.
01:17:42I was like, dang, that's a real good shot.
01:17:44You know, I looked at the shot.
01:17:45Boom, caught with a good left hand.
01:17:46I said, oh, my goodness, that's a good shot.
01:17:48And my foot really sleared off from under me.
01:17:50And I said, okay, you know, I'll take this.
01:17:52I've been knocked down.
01:17:52You know, I'll take that.
01:17:53That's the first time for everything.
01:17:54I kind of expect something like that to happen when you fight a Sparrow Partners
01:17:57because Sparrow Partners know so much about you.
01:17:59That's why I always vowed to myself I would never fight a Sparrow Partners.
01:18:01But when it comes down to showing the world who's the best, power for power,
01:18:05you know, I had to go out and do my thing.
01:18:06He had something I wanted.
01:18:07I don't have a WBA built in my collection.
01:18:09Now I do.
01:18:10How did that feel?
01:18:11I mean, were you hurt?
01:18:12Were you buzzed?
01:18:13It was a stunning shot.
01:18:15You know, then it had you just, you know, it's like a flash knockdown.
01:18:17You get dazed.
01:18:18Actually, believe it or not, I had a premonition of that.
01:18:20I said I was probably going to get knocked down in this fight because he knew me so well.
01:18:23And I said, watch.
01:18:24Like a dazed guy, I might get knocked down.
01:18:26And I remember just saying that no matter what happens, when you get knocked down,
01:18:29get up and keep fighting with all your heart.
01:18:31You know the kid knows you, but you got the biggest heart in boxing.
01:18:33You're the man.
01:18:34Keep going.
01:18:34And that's what I did.
01:18:36Early in the fight, you switched to Southpaw.
01:18:39Why?
01:18:39Because I knew he knew my right-handed stuff too well.
01:18:42So I turned Southpaw.
01:18:43I'd confuse him a lot.
01:18:44I'd put a lot on his mind.
01:18:46It would be something that he's not used to seeing.
01:18:48He was a confidence killer.
01:18:49He killed his confidence to see me come out there and turn Southpaw.
01:18:52When he was cut, when your heads collided, it would look like a really bad cut.
01:18:58It looked like the fight could not go on very long, especially if you would try to exploit it.
01:19:03But you never seemed to go after it.
01:19:05No, I wasn't going to try to go after the cut because run after the cut is what caused you to run into a big shot.
01:19:09You know what I'm saying?
01:19:10If I got anxious and overreacted, I ran right into something big.
01:19:13I ran into a big shot anyway, just underestimating him, thinking that he was about out of there, you know.
01:19:17And it happens that way.
01:19:19But you can never go at a guy just because he's bleeding, he's desperate, he's more dangerous then than he is when he's clean.
01:19:24And I knew he was going to be dangerous, so I just said, look, don't worry about that.
01:19:27Press him, keep the pressure on him, you'll win the round.
01:19:28You'll win the round, you'll lose that round, but you'll win the fight.
01:19:31Having finally been caught with a big shot and been knocked down, does it make you feel, okay, I'm a prize fighter,
01:19:38I've showed I can deal with anything that shows up in the ring?
01:19:42You know what?
01:19:42I've been dealing with adversity all my life, you know what I'm saying?
01:19:45All my life I've been dealing with adversity, you know what I'm saying?
01:19:48And from Seoul, they showed that tonight, I said, watch something happen to me tonight to carry me back to that.
01:19:53But I'm going to show after this why I'm who I am.
01:19:56Seoul Olympic made me who I am.
01:19:57They saw that loss, they knocked me down, I came back.
01:19:59They saw this knockdown tonight, what am I, going to quit?
01:20:02I'm the best thing that ever happened here, you know what I'm saying?
01:20:04I'm a fighter, I'm a true fighter.
01:20:05God bless me with talent, and I'm going to come out here and use that talent to be all I can be.
01:20:09Thank you very much, Roy Jones.
01:20:11He can't have everything in his self.
01:20:13Hey, you feel the man, you know what I'm saying?
01:20:15All right, Jim, what Roy is really saying is that it was Pensacola 2 and New York nothing tonight.
01:20:22We saw some of Roy Jones, some of RJ, the bad Roy Jones, and we saw a pretty good Lou Doval give his best in his hometown.
01:20:33Jim?
01:20:34All right, next up in the pound-for-pound sweepstakes, Oscar De La Hoya scheduled to take on Julio Cesar Chavez on September 18.
01:20:42Prince Nassim Hamed may be closing in on a possible date with Kennedy McKinney October 30.
01:20:47And Evander Holyfield appears for now to have turned down yet another offer to fight Lennox Lewis.
01:20:53We'll have a final word on what happened here in the ring in just a moment.
01:20:56Let's look ahead to some upcoming programs on HBO.
