00:00A local wilderness expert named Skip Welch had taken the girl up to Ghost Canyon for a Bigfoot adventure.
00:06He returned, but she is still missing.
00:09By all accounts, Teresa was a loving teenage girl with her whole life ahead of her.
00:16And it's sad to me that that was tragically cut short.
00:20I want to know if she actually is gone or if she's still out there.
00:23If you guys are going to go deeper into this, it's going to get weird.
00:28He was able to convince a bunch of these college students to go up to this place, Ghost Canyon, with him.
00:33Everyone we've talked to has told us how weird Ghost Canyon can be.
00:40I see what looks like a white gorilla. They chased us for at least 500 yards.
00:45Do you think Skip had anything to do with Teresa Beer going missing?
00:49I still don't believe my heart of heart that he came here and killed that girl.
00:53I absolutely do believe Bigfoot is up in that area.
00:56I just don't think he's involved in Teresa's disappearance.
00:59There's no evidence to show that he's attacking anyone.
01:04Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
01:05What'd you find now?
01:06He would shoot drugs and we used to sell meth.
01:09Blind Johnny is not just a user, he's also selling.
01:12He's basically using these girls to get his drugs.
01:16To be drug mules and then potentially selling girls to his friends.
01:21That's a huge statement.
01:22Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
01:52I'm glad we're finally able to meet with Tammy because I think she's going to be key to figuring
02:00out just how involved Blind Johnny was in all this. At this point in the investigation, we're
02:06taking a hard look at Blind Johnny. He was Teresa's uncle and guardian back when she vanished in 1987.
02:15Blind Johnny's absolutely dead center in my crosshairs. In my opinion, he's the person we
02:21need to look at the hardest right now. As we were looking through the case files, we came across
02:27some pretty damning statements from Blind Johnny's ex-girlfriend, Tammy Newman, and it's clear based
02:33on what she said that we need to dig quite a bit deeper with her. Yeah, you know, I think meeting
02:39her is probably one of the most pivotal points in this investigation. Maybe he was, you know,
02:45connected in Teresa's disappearance. I think Tammy's going to give us that insight and that background
02:50on who Blind Johnny really was and what he was all about.
02:56What happened to Teresa Beer on June 1st, 1987, it was a unique missing person case. She went missing
03:02up here in the Sierra National Forest. The entire town got caught up in this Bigfoot hysteria.
03:10Since Bigfoot made the headlines on this missing person investigation,
03:13my personal opinion, it took away from the case.
03:15This case eats at me because she never had a fair shake at life. She never had a chance
03:22to become the woman she probably could have been. She's a very nice, down-to-earth girl,
03:28but she was bounced around from a lot of places. That complicates a child's life.
03:33My goal in this case is, ultimately, justice for Teresa Beer.
03:41I'm hoping Tammy will be up front with us, tell us how it was.
03:49Finally, we can get some answers on Blind Johnny and maybe the connection to Skip.
03:55I'm truly getting this feeling that we have only scratched the surface, even Blind Johnny alone.
04:03Right.
04:04Getting a vibe that there is so much more going on.
04:08We're in a boulder part of town where we will be meeting Tammy.
04:25Put it this way, my cop meter is on high right now.
04:29So, my impression of this area, Motel Row, where Blind Johnny and Tammy and Teresa were living in,
04:40it's rough. It's a rough spot.
04:50What was this neighborhood like back in the 80s?
04:52Prostitutes.
04:53Just a lot of drug deals, 24-7.
04:57Is that why they called it Motel Row?
04:58Yeah.
05:01But what was the main drug of choice around in this neighborhood during their...
05:05Methamphetamine.
05:06Methamphetamine.
05:07So, what was it like living here with Blind Johnny after Teresa disappeared?
05:13It was scary.
05:15Mm-hmm.
05:16I believe that we could all very well be Teresa Beer.
05:21I believe that with my whole heart.
05:26That could have been you.
05:27That could have been me.
05:28Absolutely.
05:37We understand that this goes back a long way, and I know it's a lot of pain.
05:42I can see that on your face now.
05:45But, again...
05:45I'm lucky to be alive.
05:47I'm so lucky to be alive.
05:50No, we get it.
05:50Yeah.
05:51You don't understand.
05:52I know what I went through, and I went through a lot of hell, and there's more.
06:00There's not just me.
06:02Back in 1987, I was a 17-year-old girl, enamored with the drug life.
06:14You were 17, and how old was Blind Johnny at the time?
06:20What was he, 47, 48?
06:22Okay.
06:24He introduced me to drugs.
06:26What kind of drugs?
06:27He had somebody inject it.
06:30Into you?
06:32Okay.
06:35Did you want it at the time, or did he try to manipulate that into you?
06:40It was manipulate.
06:41It was all to gain control.
06:45When you say manipulate, how did Johnny manipulate you?
06:48I'm just kidding.
06:49What would he do?
06:50By brainwashing us.
06:51Like...
06:51He would brainwash...
06:52Well, there was other girls eventually.
06:55Okay.
06:55He would brainwash us against our parents, that they weren't worried about us.
07:00They didn't care.
07:01Look what we were, you know?
07:02Right, right.
07:02He's taking care of us.
07:04He's paying for our clothes.
07:05He's feeding us.
07:06He's this.
07:07He's that.
07:09I'm your daddy type.
07:11Right, right.
07:12And he would be abusive.
07:14And you would stay.
07:15You would stay.
07:21Once you're turned out, and you need the drugs, and nobody cares about you, you can't go home
07:27to your white-collar family because you're a disgrace.
07:31What do you do?
07:32You keep feeding your habit any way you can.
07:40So I wanted to ask you about that.
07:42Because it was mentioned that Blind Johnny would have the girls, like, pack away the drugs
07:48and then sell them.
07:49Yeah.
07:50John ended up getting us little young girls and having us young girls deliver the drugs
07:55so that...
07:56because little girls don't get in trouble.
07:57I think it's absolutely disgusting what he did to these girls.
08:03He manipulated them in such a way that they felt obligated to be around him and depend on him,
08:11and they're still very much upset and traumatized by it.
08:15My mom tried so hard to get him arrested.
08:21He kicked in our door.
08:23He held a gun in front of my mom.
08:26Johnny was crazy.
08:30Johnny was...
08:31He was bad.
08:33He was really bad.
08:36Blind Johnny was a dangerous guy.
08:39I mean, anytime you deal with the world of narcotics, it's dangerous, right?
08:43You don't know who's coming and going out of your house, different people.
08:46I don't know what to make of that and how that coincides with Teresa's disappearance,
08:51but it was sure really strange.
08:54So do you know to what extent Blind Johnny was involved in Teresa's disappearance?
09:04I don't know that he did.
09:06I have no...
09:08He never talked about her.
09:09Nobody ever talked about her.
09:12The conversations maybe you've had with Teresa during that time,
09:15do you remember her saying anything that...
09:18She never really talked.
09:21She was so quiet.
09:22I would go in and try and make conversation with her.
09:26She was in the bedroom.
09:28She would be making a bologna sandwich
09:30or doing whatever he told her to do.
09:34Why did he even take Teresa in in the first place?
09:38For the welfare, for the money.
09:40Oh, gotcha.
09:41She was just a slave as...
09:45That was it.
09:46Cook the food, do this, get...
09:48That's it.
09:50She was scared of him.
09:52Yes.
09:55First of all, I can't even imagine
09:56what it would be like to have to live in a situation like that.
10:00As a mom, I don't understand
10:01how you could not show love to a family member,
10:06especially a child.
10:08Putting yourself in Teresa's shoes,
10:10Skip comes over and says,
10:12hey, we're going to go see Bigfoot
10:14and you get to get out of this house.
10:17Of course she's leaving.
10:23After Teresa went missing
10:25and Johnny and Skip stayed friends,
10:27did you ever overhear them talking about it?
10:29Nothing.
10:30I only met that dude twice
10:32and I did not like him.
10:36He was gross.
10:37He had cutoffs on, T-shirt.
10:39He was dirty.
10:41He was greasy.
10:42His hair was...
10:44He was creepy.
10:49What do you think happened to her
10:51when she went up into the mountains with Skip?
10:53I think Skip was supposed to take her to school
10:58and Skip talked her into...
11:03Or he didn't talk her in.
11:04Once you're in the car, you're in the car.
11:08And Teresa was not feisty.
11:11She was submissive.
11:13She was quiet.
11:14She was withdrawn.
11:16What were your thoughts
11:18when you heard that Skip said
11:20that Bigfoot took her?
11:23The son of a bitch killed her.
11:30Nothing came and stole her.
11:32Nobody came and took her.
11:34Bigfoot is not there.
11:35Show me a story where he's carnivorous
11:38and goes and kills and devours.
11:41I ain't never.
11:43But I'm going to tell you like this.
11:45They're both pieces of
11:47John and Skip
11:50are
11:51plain and simple.
11:55How they got to live out their lives
11:57in freedom
11:58is beyond me.
12:01What is the deal
12:14with Blind Johnny?
12:16Blind Johnny did not care
12:17about Teresa at all.
12:19Well, it doesn't sound like
12:20anybody really cared about her.
12:24After interviewing Tammy
12:26and hearing about the living conditions
12:28that Teresa was in,
12:31I mean, it was infuriating.
12:33It is stunning how
12:34her uncle, Blind Johnny,
12:35failed her.
12:37Just stunning.
12:39If Teresa was going through
12:41what she was going through today,
12:42they would not give him custody.
12:44She would not be placed with him.
12:45And she would not be in that environment.
12:47Do you think that it was just
12:49that she got lost in the system?
12:51No.
12:52I just think that
12:53that system at the time
12:55was just not as robust.
12:58It's really heartbreaking
12:59hearing how Teresa
13:00fell through the cracks
13:01of the system,
13:02and it actually brings it
13:03all back into focus for me.
13:06Teresa was a real person.
13:08She was more than just a headline.
13:10And even though
13:11she was surrounded
13:12by a lot of dark things,
13:13she really still does deserve justice
13:16at the end of the day.
13:19If I had this case
13:21and I had this,
13:22I'm going to call him a dirtbag,
13:23I would have, you know,
13:24looked at him first.
13:26But Fresno had their investigation.
13:28Blind Johnny never got arrested
13:31for Teresa disappearing.
13:35The police had plenty of reason
13:37to suspect Blind Johnny
13:38had something to do
13:40with Teresa's disappearance.
13:42Teresa was last seen
13:43leaving Johnny's apartment
13:44on June 1st, 1987.
13:46Johnny reported her missing
13:47at 9 p.m.,
13:48despite telling her school
13:50that she was homesick
13:50several hours earlier.
13:52For all these reasons,
13:53the police interviewed
13:54and investigated Blind Johnny,
13:56but he was never formally charged
13:58with any crime.
13:59I think we've got to look
14:00at all angles in this.
14:01We received more answers today,
14:04but now we're raising
14:05more questions.
14:06I just have a feeling
14:07that this is going to take
14:08a hard left,
14:10and my brain is going
14:11to literally implode.
14:13To me, we have to start
14:36from the beginning again
14:36and just retrace our steps
14:38on all this.
14:39Let's just go over our theories
14:40a little bit, right?
14:42So, Blind Johnny,
14:44we obviously know
14:46that he's a bad guardian.
14:47We found out he's
14:48a massive heroin addict.
14:49So, is it possible
14:51that Teresa knew too much
14:52or saw too much
14:54and Blind Johnny
14:55just wanted to get rid of her?
14:57I think that's
14:57an interesting theory,
14:59but I just think
15:00that Blind Johnny
15:01was a deadbeat dad,
15:02or guardian, let's say,
15:03in this case,
15:04that took Teresa,
15:05and he didn't care
15:05about the kids.
15:07But, based on what
15:08Tammy told us,
15:09I think Skip is the one
15:10we need to be looking
15:11at right now.
15:13He took Teresa up there,
15:15and the hook was,
15:16I'm going to show you
15:16Bigfoot, I'm going to show
15:17you all these neat things,
15:19these weird things.
15:20She was enthralled
15:21probably by that stuff.
15:22Yeah.
15:22But, do I think Bigfoot
15:23actually grabbed her?
15:25I don't buy that.
15:32I don't believe Bigfoot
15:33was involved
15:33in Teresa's disappearance.
15:36But, Skip certainly did.
15:40But, what were
15:40his intentions
15:41when he took Teresa
15:42up to Ghost Canyon?
15:46We know from
15:47the police reports
15:47that at one point
15:48he was arrested
15:49in connection
15:50to Teresa's disappearance
15:51on account of child stealing.
15:53However, authorities
15:55eventually dropped
15:56those charges.
15:57So, I want to know,
15:59what did the police
16:00think of Skip?
16:01And where was their focus
16:02in the early days
16:03of this investigation?
16:06Hey Jess, check this out.
16:21What you got?
16:22Found something kind of odd
16:23in the police report.
16:25The investigators
16:26are referencing
16:26an exact campsite location
16:28where Skip claims
16:29Teresa was abducted
16:30by Bigfoot
16:31or ran off.
16:32Wait, what?
16:33Yeah.
16:34It's a little murky
16:35but it sounds like
16:36Skip actually took
16:37authorities to this
16:38campsite at one point.
16:39Uh-huh.
16:39And that caused the police
16:40to become suspicious.
16:43According to the police report,
16:45nearly 10 days
16:46after Teresa disappeared,
16:47Skip took authorities
16:48to a campsite
16:49where he claimed
16:50Teresa was abducted
16:52or disappeared from.
16:53The crazy part about it
16:55is that the campsite
16:56was over 20 miles away
16:58from Ghost Canyon.
17:04I mean, from my experience,
17:05something isn't adding up.
17:08We need to go
17:10to the campsite
17:11where he took
17:11investigators to
17:12because I think
17:14that's going to give us
17:15a little bit better grasp
17:16on what this case is about.
17:17Ugh, this is just
17:19layer cake
17:20after layer cake
17:21after layer cake.
17:23I want to know more
17:24about this location.
17:27Things do get missed.
17:28You never know.
17:30What was Skip doing?
17:32And what was he thinking?
17:39How far up
17:40is this campsite?
17:42From that report,
17:43this is like 27 miles.
17:45I mean,
17:45we're out here
17:46really remote.
17:47There's nothing.
17:58All right.
18:01Here it is.
18:03Let's check this out.
18:04Yeah.
18:05Wow.
18:09What's that?
18:11Look at that.
18:12Look at that.
18:15So where are we
18:17looking at the GPS here
18:19from where we are
18:21to those coordinates
18:22at Ghost Canyon?
18:23Mm-hmm.
18:24I mean,
18:24that looks almost
18:25like 20 miles
18:26north of here.
18:28Oh, okay.
18:29That's far.
18:31All right.
18:32Do you want me
18:32to read out
18:32what the Fresno
18:33Police Department
18:34says about
18:35the campsite?
18:37Yeah.
18:37It says,
18:40upon exiting
18:41the vehicle
18:42immediately,
18:43Welch pointed
18:44to the meadow
18:45and stated
18:46that this was
18:46the area
18:47that he had
18:48last seen her in.
18:50Okay.
18:51Meadow.
18:52So next thing
18:53in these notes,
18:54it says,
18:55we were approximately
18:5620 to 30 feet
18:57from this small
18:58grove of trees
18:59and I observed
19:00a blanket
19:01hanging from a tree
19:03within that grove
19:04of trees.
19:08Maybe this is it.
19:10I mean,
19:11my first impression
19:12is when I went
19:12up to the campsite.
19:14If you can wander
19:15off from there,
19:15you can get turned
19:16around.
19:16I mean,
19:17it's the mountains.
19:18It's a remote location.
19:21As a law enforcement
19:22officer,
19:23you try to get
19:23into the mind
19:24of the suspect.
19:26I mean,
19:27you have to.
19:28You have to try
19:28to really place
19:30yourself in that
19:30mind frame
19:31of what the suspect's
19:32doing and why.
19:34The answer
19:35is always why.
19:36What else does
19:37it say on that?
19:37Okay,
19:37so along with
19:38the blanket,
19:39there was a plastic bag
19:40and inside the bag
19:41there was blue sweatpants
19:43and a pair of shorts
19:44that were maroon in color
19:45that stated Fresno High
19:47on them.
19:49So next thing
19:49in these notes,
19:50it says,
19:51they found a cloth
19:52beige purse
19:53and the camera
19:54that they found
19:54appeared to be
19:55a Polaroid type
19:56of camera
19:56that was immediately
19:58adjacent to the purse.
20:01Also,
20:02we observed
20:02several Polaroid pictures
20:04probably from that
20:05Polaroid camera
20:05that they had found
20:06that was laid out.
20:07Right.
20:07We observed several
20:08pictures of the
20:09countryside
20:09along with a picture
20:11of Welch playing
20:12guitar.
20:16That's weird.
20:19Something about
20:20this site
20:22smells fishy.
20:24Did Skip
20:25actually take
20:26Teresa here
20:27or was he just
20:28trying to throw
20:28the authorities
20:29off the trail?
20:30It sounds like
20:31now that I'm
20:32reading through
20:32this whole thing
20:33like as we go
20:33through and like
20:34seeing the area
20:35it sounds like
20:36it looked set up.
20:38Check this out.
20:40During a period
20:41of the search
20:41in the late afternoon
20:42I was seated
20:43by Welch
20:43on a large rock
20:45and he began
20:45to talk
20:46and then he began
20:47to cry.
20:49I asked him
20:50if there was
20:50something wrong.
20:52He stated
20:52that he felt
20:53so sorry
20:54for the girl
20:54up on the mountain.
20:56So looking at
20:59Ghost Canyon
21:00earlier
21:00that's more
21:02up in a mountain.
21:03This is not
21:04up in a mountain.
21:05I mean we're
21:05more down
21:05in a depression.
21:07That's a mountain.
21:11It sounds like
21:12Skip had a lot
21:13of guilt
21:13leading investigators
21:15up to that
21:15campsite.
21:17But why?
21:19Was he purposely
21:19trying to confuse
21:20authorities?
21:21Was he trying
21:22to stage
21:22this campsite?
21:25I'm starting
21:26to get a better
21:26understanding
21:27of why the police
21:28became suspicious
21:28when Skip brought
21:30them here.
21:31I mean I don't know
21:32what this could
21:32have been
21:33but you never know.
21:34I can tell you
21:35one thing.
21:37I know the truth
21:38is going to come out.
21:56let's just reassess
22:13everything
22:13because honestly
22:14it just keeps
22:16moving around.
22:17Mm-hmm.
22:20Here's my issue
22:21with Skip
22:21up to this point
22:22right?
22:23Skip's too murky.
22:24I have no idea
22:25at this point
22:26what's going on
22:26with Skip
22:27because we're hearing
22:27from people
22:29like Kenny
22:29who seems very
22:30credible
22:31that he doesn't
22:32think Skip
22:33at all
22:33was a violent
22:34man.
22:34And then I've
22:35got other people
22:36like Tammy
22:37saying that
22:38you know
22:38he's a weirdo.
22:42I really think
22:43it's important
22:44that we talk
22:45to a main
22:47family member.
22:48You know
22:48somebody that
22:49knows directly
22:50what type
22:51of person
22:51Skip was.
22:53I did find
22:54in these files
22:55Skip's half-brother
22:57Robin
22:57he knew
22:58that he was
22:59somewhat
22:59mentally unstable
23:00in regard
23:01to the beliefs
23:01in Bigfoot.
23:03On several occasions
23:05Skip had pointed
23:06out certain things
23:07to him in regards
23:07to Bigfoot
23:08but that he
23:10Robin
23:10was unable
23:11to see the same
23:12things that
23:13supposedly Welch
23:13was seeing.
23:14Robin's like
23:15dude I'm not
23:15seeing anything
23:16that you're
23:17talking about.
23:17Anytime you can
23:20meet with a
23:20direct family
23:21member I mean
23:22that speaks
23:22volumes.
23:23Let me just
23:24give him a ring.
23:32Your call
23:33has been
23:33forwarded to
23:34voicemail.
23:35The person
23:35you're trying
23:36to reach
23:36is not
23:36available.
23:37Interviewing
23:38witnesses in
23:38this case
23:39is hard.
23:39To try to
23:40get people
23:41after almost
23:4140 years
23:42to come
23:42forward to
23:43sit down
23:43that's really
23:44difficult because
23:45they do not
23:46want to open
23:46up that box
23:47of pain.
23:48It's a lot
23:48of pain
23:48and suffering
23:49in this case
23:49for everybody
23:50involved.
24:06The one
24:06person that
24:07keeps coming
24:08up is his
24:08daughter Chandra.
24:11That's
24:11Kenny's
24:12ex-girlfriend.
24:13She was
24:13supposed to
24:14go up with
24:14Skip and
24:15Michelle into
24:16the woods to
24:17go squatching
24:17and Skip
24:18told her
24:18stay home
24:18at the last
24:19second.
24:20Chandra being
24:21his daughter
24:21she's really
24:22going to know
24:23what Skip
24:24was about.
24:24I mean when
24:25you hear it
24:25from blood
24:26relatives I
24:26mean that's
24:27a different
24:27picture right
24:27there.
24:28That's a
24:28very good
24:28point.
24:29And I just
24:30feel like
24:30if we can
24:31get a hold
24:31of Chandra
24:32maybe Chandra
24:33can give
24:33us maybe
24:34the final
24:35assessment
24:35on what
24:36Skip's
24:36personality
24:37actually was.
24:39She grew
24:40up with Skip
24:41it's her
24:41father.
24:42If anybody's
24:44going to know
24:44what type
24:45of person
24:45Skip was
24:46it should
24:47be Chandra.
24:48I think
24:48it's imperative
24:49to talk
24:49to her.
24:52Let me
24:53give her
24:54a call.
24:55Hold on.
25:00Come on
25:00pick up.
25:01Hi Chandra.
25:11Yes this
25:12is she.
25:12My name's
25:13Jessica Chobot
25:14I'm with
25:14Robert Collier
25:16we're
25:16reinvestigating
25:18the Teresa
25:18Beer case.
25:22Um
25:22okay.
25:24I'd love
25:25for us to
25:26chat with you
25:27and meet
25:27with you
25:28so we
25:28could maybe
25:29ask you
25:29some
25:30questions
25:30about
25:30Skip.
25:32Um
25:33well
25:34um
25:34would you
25:36be down
25:36to possibly
25:37meet with
25:37us?
25:42Okay.
25:44Okay great
25:45we'll see you
25:45in just a
25:46little bit.
25:48Thanks Chandra.
25:49Bye.
25:51I'm
25:52very
25:52curious
25:53to hear
25:54what
25:55Chandra
25:55has to
25:56say
25:56about
25:57her dad
25:57and
25:58then try
25:59and wade
25:59through
26:00that
26:00try to
26:01find
26:01the
26:02truth.
26:21Chandra?
26:21Yes.
26:22Hi.
26:22Hi.
26:23I'm Robert.
26:24Hi Robert.
26:24How are you?
26:25Good.
26:25Nice to meet you.
26:25Nice to meet you.
26:26Hi Jessica.
26:27Nice to meet you.
26:27Can we sit down
26:28with you?
26:29Thanks.
26:31Obviously we're here
26:32to reinvestigate the
26:35Teresa beer case
26:36and your father's name
26:38comes up a lot.
26:39Mm-hmm.
26:40Most people think
26:41he had something to do
26:42with her disappearance.
26:43Yeah.
26:43So I just wanted to sit
26:44down with you
26:45and get your side of the
26:47story, what your father
26:48was like and your opinion
26:49on the whole thing.
26:50Yeah.
26:50Most definitely.
26:50This is my dad right here
26:54and my mom.
26:56He was kind of a hippie.
26:58Mm-hmm.
26:58Um, he's a mountain man.
27:00Okay.
27:00He's been in mountains
27:01ever since I can remember
27:02researching Bigfoot
27:03and it was just what he did.
27:06His great dad,
27:07he was really loving.
27:08Um, I can remember
27:10a lot of things
27:10that he did with me.
27:11He used to color
27:12with me all the time
27:13and he tucked me in
27:14every night
27:15that I can ever imagine
27:16until I was 12 years old.
27:18You know,
27:19and he was just
27:19a great guy.
27:21He had a different
27:22type of personality.
27:23He was kind of quirky,
27:24you know,
27:25he just,
27:25but he was,
27:26he was a good guy.
27:27And this is my family
27:29also right here.
27:31Okay.
27:32That's one heck
27:33of a necklace
27:33that your dad's
27:34sporting there.
27:36He loved my mom
27:37so much
27:37and he,
27:38he did everything
27:39he could
27:39to be able to,
27:40as good a life
27:40with her
27:41as he possibly could.
27:42Mm-hmm.
27:43And this is my dad
27:44and his mom
27:45and my uncle
27:46and my aunt.
27:47This is in 1962.
27:49No, 1962
27:50there was a fire,
27:51um,
27:52a couple doors down
27:53from where my dad lived
27:53and my dad noticed
27:55the flames and stuff
27:56and the smoke
27:57coming from the house
27:58and there was,
27:59there were six kids
28:00in the house
28:00and he busted the window
28:01and jumped through the window
28:02and he went in there
28:03and he pulled
28:03every single one
28:04of those kids out.
28:05Oof.
28:06And they were all,
28:06every one of them
28:07died from smoke inhalation
28:08and then,
28:09then they,
28:10that's the man
28:10that my dad was.
28:12He would do that
28:12for anybody.
28:15To shift gears
28:16into Teresa then,
28:18knowing how dangerous
28:19and your father
28:20knowing how dangerous
28:20it was to go up there,
28:22why did he decide
28:23to take Teresa up there?
28:24She told my dad
28:28what her uncle John
28:29did to her.
28:30Oh, Teresa told you guys
28:32about the abuse
28:32that she was getting
28:33from blind Johnny at home.
28:34Yes, and she wasn't
28:35going back home.
28:38Why wouldn't he just
28:38take Teresa
28:39straight to the police?
28:41I don't know,
28:41but I know that he,
28:42he was trying to help her.
28:43I think that the only reason
28:44why they were there
28:45was because my dad
28:46was supposed to meet
28:47somebody there.
28:48They were supposed
28:48to take her
28:48to the police department
28:50in whatever county it was,
28:51the county,
28:52one county over or something,
28:53I don't know exactly
28:54because he didn't go
28:54into detail.
28:55Who was this somebody?
28:56I don't know.
28:57I don't know.
28:58They were supposed
28:58to take her
28:59to the authorities
29:00when she disappeared.
29:04What was your relationship
29:06with Teresa?
29:07How did you know her?
29:08I didn't know her.
29:09I really didn't.
29:09I met her one time.
29:10It was at my Aunt Mary's house.
29:12This is where she went
29:13to Ghost Canyon.
29:14And I sat down
29:15and I said, hi.
29:16And she looked like
29:18she had been crying.
29:19Mm.
29:19And.
29:27I told her my name,
29:29her daughter.
29:31And she says, I know.
29:32And I says, how are you?
29:33Are you okay?
29:34And she says, no, I'm not okay,
29:36but I'm going to be okay.
29:36She says, no, I'm not okay.
29:41Your dad's helping me.
29:45I said, what do you mean?
29:46She says, he's going
29:48to get me away from here
29:49and we're going to go get help.
29:50And he's got it worked out
29:52to where I'm going to be
29:52able to get away from here.
29:54And I says, is that
29:55what you want to do?
29:56Are you sure?
29:57And she says, yeah.
29:58She says, this is my friend
29:59and I trust him.
30:04And about that time,
30:05my dad came over
30:06and he says, come on.
30:08Does anybody want to go
30:09look for Bigfoot?
30:10Can you hear that?
30:15Was that also the last time
30:17you saw her?
30:19Yeah.
30:23Later on, when the police
30:24were questioning your dad,
30:25he also then mentioned
30:26that he suspected Teresa
30:28had either run off
30:29or was taken by Bigfoot.
30:31Do you know why he said that?
30:32Because there was a lot
30:34of Bigfoot up there.
30:34He knows that they're there
30:36because he didn't know
30:37what to say.
30:39This hurt him so bad.
30:40It was so freaked him out
30:41so bad because she was missing.
30:43He couldn't find her anywhere.
30:44And all of a sudden,
30:44she's disappeared off
30:45the face of the earth.
30:46I can't imagine.
30:47I just can't imagine.
30:48I know that I would
30:49have been freaked out.
30:51He was not a bad man at all.
30:54Maybe he was really bad
30:55judgment.
30:57Right.
30:57You know, but he's not a killer.
31:03Okay, I also want
31:03to tell you guys something.
31:06My dad said last time
31:07he saw Teresa,
31:08he was talking to two guys
31:09on motorcycles.
31:11That stuck in my mind.
31:13And then later,
31:14I found this.
31:20All right, what's this?
31:21This is about
31:22the Speed Freak killers.
31:24Okay.
31:28I mean, they're a famous
31:29group of serial killers.
31:32Very dangerous people.
31:36Some of the Speed Freak killers
31:38on motorcycles?
31:39Yeah.
31:39They're roaming around
31:40on motorcycles.
31:41That's what I understand
31:41them to be, yeah.
31:46And if you read on in there,
31:48it says that Teresa Beard
31:49is one of the possible
31:50victims of the Speed Freak killers.
31:53Wait, what?
31:56She's listed in this.
31:57Yes.
31:59Yeah, I see it right there.
32:01The Speed Freak killers.
32:04The San Joaquin County Sheriff
32:05now announcing
32:06a gruesome discovery today
32:08that could be tied
32:09to the Speed Freak killers.
32:11These two men were operating
32:14up and down California
32:15murdering young women.
32:16The Speed Freak killers,
32:18given that name
32:19because of their
32:19drug-fueled crime spree.
32:22They were eventually
32:23convicted of four murders,
32:25but are suspected
32:26in the deaths
32:27of as many as 70 people.
32:29And they were still active
32:30at the time
32:31Teresa went missing.
32:32There have been numbers
32:33up to 100 bodies
32:34that could be out there still.
32:36So those families
32:37deserve closure.
32:38To add a group
32:40of serial killers
32:41onto our list
32:42of suspects
32:43blows my mind.
32:45But Teresa's name
32:46is on this list
32:47for a reason
32:48and we need
32:49to look into it.
32:51Who put this list together?
32:52Is it this,
32:53the guy right here?
32:54Yes.
32:54Private investigator Rob Dick?
32:56Yes.
32:57Have you contacted him
32:58at all
32:59or been in touch
32:59with him at all
33:00or is this all
33:00that you found?
33:01No, I've been
33:02in contact with him.
33:03Oh, there she is again.
33:04There was a list
33:06of pictures
33:07of girls' pictures
33:08and it would say
33:09underneath the girls' pictures
33:10it would say
33:10either possible victim
33:13or it would say victim
33:14under each girl's picture.
33:16Okay.
33:16And under Teresa's name
33:17it said possible victim.
33:19Oh, right there.
33:24Okay, these are
33:24the Speed Freak killers.
33:25This is Shermantine.
33:26Okay.
33:27And this is her talk.
33:29Okay.
33:31And they both
33:32eventually ended up
33:33in prison.
33:34Yeah, one committed suicide
33:35in prison,
33:36hanging himself.
33:37Do you know
33:37which one's still alive?
33:39This one.
33:39Shermantine.
33:40Okay.
33:42So based on your
33:44investigation into this
33:45with the Speed Freak killers,
33:47you're saying
33:47that it is possible
33:49that they were involved
33:50in the disappearance?
33:51Absolutely.
33:51Yes.
33:52That's exactly what I'm saying.
33:53I believe that they are
33:54the ones that kidnapped her
33:55and killed her, yes.
34:03I know my dad didn't do this.
34:17I know my dad
34:18didn't hurt her at all.
34:20I know he was only
34:20trying to help her
34:21and it just went bad
34:22somehow.
34:22This was a curveball
34:26that I was not expecting.
34:30We'd have to look
34:31more into this
34:32and interview
34:33the private investigator
34:34that compiled this information.
34:36I mean, it's huge.
34:37I just hope
34:38that we find out
34:40what happened to her.
34:41Yeah.
34:41I don't care
34:43who ends up being guilty.
34:45I just want someone
34:46to find closure for her
34:47because she deserves that.
34:52Chandra had a lot
34:54of good information,
34:55but I want to know more
34:56about this Speed Freak killers list.
34:59To my knowledge,
34:59they were working mostly
35:01in Northern California
35:02and I want to know
35:03why Teresa Beer
35:04made this list.
35:17Totally didn't see
35:18that one coming.
35:19Add that to the list
35:21because a pair
35:22of prolific serial killers
35:24was not where I was thinking
35:26this was going to end up.
35:28Me neither.
35:30Could you imagine
35:31finally getting away
35:33from your terrible home life,
35:36Right.
35:37getting lost in the woods,
35:39only to then run into
35:41a set of serial killers?
35:43Right.
35:44Why is Teresa's name
35:46on this Speed Freak killers list?
35:49I mean,
35:50that's what we have
35:50to find out.
35:51But you know what?
35:52We don't know enough
35:53about these guys.
35:55So far,
35:56investigators have recovered
35:58400 bone fragments.
36:00Discovering bones,
36:02human,
36:03deep in a well
36:03that have been tied
36:04to the Speed Freak killer case.
36:06Back in 1984,
36:08the Speed Freak killers
36:09embarked on a drug-fueled
36:11killing spree
36:12that lasted nearly 15 years.
36:14The two buddies
36:16were convicted
36:16of four murders
36:18in San Joaquin County,
36:19but it's believed
36:20they killed a lot more.
36:23Their heinous crimes
36:24struck fear
36:25in the hearts
36:25of people that lived
36:27in the Northern California area
36:28where they were known
36:30to operate.
36:31But could Teresa's disappearance
36:34hundreds of miles south
36:35of their killing area
36:37be the result
36:38of this murderous duo?
36:39To answer that question,
36:44we've tracked down Rob Dick,
36:46the P.I.
36:47who put Teresa's name
36:48on that list.
36:59Hi, Rob.
36:59Hi.
37:00Yeah.
37:00Robert.
37:01Oh, nice to meet you.
37:01Nice to meet you.
37:02Rob and Robert.
37:02Hi, Jessica.
37:03Nice to meet you.
37:04Nice to meet you.
37:04Come on in.
37:04All right.
37:05Thanks.
37:06Thanks for having us.
37:10Well, Rob,
37:12we're trying to reinvestigate
37:13the Teresa Beer case.
37:14And while we were
37:15doing our research,
37:16we came across a list
37:17where Teresa's name
37:18shows up as a person
37:21that might have been
37:22a victim of the
37:23Speed Freak killers.
37:25And so we were kind of
37:27wondering if you could
37:28run us through your theories
37:29as to why you think
37:30she should be included
37:31in that list
37:32because as far as
37:33we're aware,
37:34they only worked up
37:35in Northern California
37:36and not this far south.
37:38Well, actually,
37:39that's not completely true
37:41because they went
37:42the whole state
37:42of California.
37:43Oh.
37:44Including, actually,
37:45the western states
37:46all the way over to Utah.
37:47Oh, really?
37:48Yeah.
37:53We know that the timeline
37:54for when they were
37:55actively killing
37:56and Teresa going missing
37:58matches up.
37:59But I guess my question is,
38:00would they have killed
38:01around here?
38:02They went everywhere,
38:03pretty much,
38:03on the west coast.
38:04So it's possible, right?
38:06They could have came
38:06this far south.
38:08I have a California map,
38:09actually, in my office.
38:10It's hand-drawn by
38:12Shermantine as to
38:13their hunting grounds.
38:17Were they just
38:18killing for opportunity?
38:20Were they killing
38:20for pleasure?
38:22It's rumored that they
38:23were hunting the
38:24ultimate sport,
38:25which were humans.
38:26Oh.
38:26Just human beings, yeah.
38:30They like back roads.
38:34Yeah, where things
38:35are isolated.
38:36Less witnesses.
38:37Right.
38:37Less people to see.
38:39These guys were
38:40always camping.
38:41These guys were always
38:42up in the woods.
38:44If they were to come
38:45across her, I mean,
38:46she would fit
38:47as a perfect victim.
38:50Back when we started
38:51getting victims
38:52that were theirs,
38:53I just compiled a list
38:54of everybody that could
38:55be a potential
38:56just with victimology.
38:58She fit the profile
39:00for what their MO
39:01for going after
39:02somebody would have
39:03been.
39:04100%.
39:04A lone 16-year-old
39:07female, no witnesses,
39:10back roads, forest.
39:12I mean, what perfect
39:13opportunity to do it?
39:17Did I see
39:18Teresa's name over here?
39:19Yeah.
39:19I put together
39:20a binder for each
39:22victim, photo,
39:23front and center,
39:24and then just
39:24whatever information,
39:26how many witnesses,
39:28family members
39:29that we might talk to,
39:30things like that.
39:31So I'm curious
39:32in how many victims?
39:34That's the magic question.
39:35Law enforcement
39:36has said it could
39:37be up to 30,
39:38and Wesley laughed
39:40at me and said,
39:40you've got to multiply
39:41that times three.
39:42Really?
39:43Oh, my God.
39:43You know, and some
39:44of their victims
39:45were acquaintances
39:46and lot lizards.
39:47What are lot lizards?
39:48Yeah.
39:49Prostitutes and truck stops.
39:51Oh, yeah, okay.
39:51Yeah.
39:51Because they're transient,
39:53they come from all over.
39:54They're not in contact
39:58with their family
39:59anymore, usually,
40:00and they're not missed.
40:01They're not missed,
40:01correct.
40:02Yeah, so you never know.
40:05Interesting.
40:06Well, who were you
40:06talking to that told you
40:08that they were looking
40:08always for lot lizards?
40:10Who was your contact?
40:12Wesley Shermantine,
40:13which is one of the two.
40:14I built a relationship
40:15with him,
40:16and I've dealt with him
40:17for the last 20 years.
40:19And we're still investigating
40:20their potential victims.
40:24Have you ever talked
40:24to Shermantine specifically
40:26about the Teresa Beer case?
40:28Yeah, I kind of touched
40:29the surface a little bit.
40:31In fact, I actually
40:31have a recording of it.
40:33Oh, he actually called you?
40:35Yeah.
40:35He calls me all the time,
40:36so I just thought
40:37I'd bring it up
40:38and see where it went.
40:39Wow.
40:39Both sides.
40:40Can we listen?
40:41Can we hear it?
40:42Yeah, I can play.
40:43All right, great.
40:43You have a prepaid call from
40:50an incarcerated individual
40:55at the California State Prison.
41:00Hey, are you busy?
41:01I'm just driving back
41:02to the office now.
41:04I've got to ask you
41:05about that victim.
41:07About 25 miles northeast
41:09of Bass Lake.
41:12Bass Lake.
41:13Yeah, Bass Lake.
