07:56He did not just act, he lived every role with raw emotion, an effortless grace.
08:04His journey from a small town in Punjab to the pinnacle of Bollywood stardom is the stuff dreams are made of.
08:12He made us fall in love with love itself. His romance was old school.
08:17His friendships eternal and his screen presence magnetic. In fact, he was that one gem who could make you laugh, cry and cheer, all in the same frame.
08:32Behind the spotlight, Dharmendra was known for his humility, warmth and poetic heart.
08:39His love for Urdu Shairi, his devotion to family and his childlike humor endured him to generations beyond his time.
08:49He was the man who made the silver screen shine brighter and today as that light fades, Bollywood stands still in silence.
08:58Because legends like Dharmendra don't die, they just turn immortal.
09:09Immortal indeed. Let's cut across now to my colleague Sana Farzeen. She joins us from the residence of Mr. Dharmendra.
09:26Sana, take us through what's been happening there. It must be a solemn moment for the family which has seen quite a bit of frenzy sort of follow in the past couple of weeks as well.
09:37But, you know, the thing about Dharmendra and you've been following his career is that it's not just about the movies that he made earlier in his career.
09:45Even till 2023, Rocky Rani, he was seen romancing Shabana Azmi there, playing a man old in age.
09:53There's another movie of his which is coming out now. He's a hero who died like a hero, right?
09:59He continued to work literally till his very last breath.
10:02Absolutely. And he was not just an on-screen hero, but off-screen too.
10:10I mean, the kind of love that we are hearing his co-stars talk about, it just shows what a man he was away from the camera,
10:17the kind of bonds that he's made and how the younger generation of actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman or even Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukun rush to meet the family, to be with them.
10:27It just shows the legacy that Dharmendra has left behind. Of course, as an actor, he's worked more than six decades and with almost 300 films.
10:36And he's made his indelible mark in the Indian cinema. I think he gave Indian cinema its soul.
10:41I mean, he was one of the very few actors who's experimented with genres across from romance, comedy, action to drama.
10:49Dharmendra has done it all and aced it all.
10:52And above all, he was probably one of the very few actors in the 70s and 80s who weren't scared to share the screen space with another superstar.
11:00From Amitabh Bachchan, Jitendra to Vinod Khanna, he's worked with every other top faces from his time without any fear of being overshadowed.
11:08And probably that shows the confidence he had as an actor and the security he brought as an artist.
11:13He's probably one of the very few actors who's given commercial hits.
11:17And he's actually told, said to be the, he was one of the most bankable stars.
11:23And he's actually had more hits than even Amitabh Bachchan who's considered as the top actor from the 70s.
11:29And right now, of course, Rocky Rani, as you rightly mentioned, he brought across a very different side.
11:35I mean, an actor in his 80s would be scared to actually go ahead and have a lip lock with his co-star in a film.
11:42But Dharmendra, being the secure and confident actor, once again broke the mold.
11:47He went ahead and had a romantic scene with his co-star Shabana Azmi and a very romantic kiss that they brought to the film,
11:55which kind of became a highlight and something that was actually spoken very positively even by the audiences.
12:02I mean, that just shows how audiences have also evolved and accept their actors in these scenes.
12:08And Ikkes, of course, will bring about a patriotic side of Dharmendra.
12:12It, of course, is based on the youngest army officer who was awarded the Mahavir Chakra, Captain Arun,
12:21and his journey and he plays the father.
12:23And it's very unfortunate, ironic that the teaser of Dharmendra's character was actually released in the morning.
12:31I mean, the trailer of the film was dropped today.
12:33The film is set to release on 25th December.
12:36And, of course, it's ironic that his family and even Dharmendra would never get to see the love that he's been receiving for his character,
12:43the poster after the poster got released.
12:46And Dharmendra, as you were rightly mentioned, has been a star who worked till his last breath.
12:50Of course, he was also seen last year in Tere Baato Me Ulja Jia, which starred Kriti Sanon and Shahid Kapoor.
12:56But, of course, more than that, of course, in the early 2000s, he played two very different roles with his sons.
13:04Be it Apne or Yamla Pagla Diwana.
13:06Those are the films that everyone will recall.
13:09He had like a full arc on Bollywood as well.
13:11You're right about that.
13:12Yeah, Sana.
13:13But also, you know, talk to me a little bit about Dharmendra, if you look at his story, right, from his early years,
13:18was the ultimate outsider who made it big in Bollywood.
13:21You know, these days, it's so cool to, and there is so much debate on this outsider versus insider debate, nepotism or not.
13:30Dharmendra is one of those stories that make you believe.
13:33I mean, the stories are now plenty, one and plenty on social media that talks about how he was inspired by Dilip Kumar,
13:40and that's what got him to leave his village in Punjab and go on to pursue his dreams.
13:44That's what really what Bollywood dreams were made of, isn't it?
13:47And he's been the ultimate poster boy of that.
13:51Yeah, I think I just got goosebumps while even hearing you, Sonal.
13:56That is the kind of journey that Dharmendra had.
13:58It's no more a secret.
13:59He was an absolute fan of Dilip Kumar, and he would actually walk miles to watch his favorite star on the big screen.
14:06And this is when he actually entered a contest.
14:09A magazine was running a contest that was promising something to do with acting in Mumbai.
14:14And he, like a true fan, entered it.
14:17And as we've been talking about since afternoon, given how good-looking Dharmendra was, he won the contest and was welcomed to Mumbai.
14:25And I think the rest is, as they say, history, because he kept on bagging great work.
14:31And I think it's his sincerity and his love for cinema that gave him that ultimate confidence to be part of films with newcomer directors and artists.
14:40These were the stories that many would actually shy away from, from Chupke Chupke to Pathar or Fool, The Burning Train.
14:47These were the films that many would actually be scared of sharing screen space with.
14:51And this is the reason that why filmmakers also had great love for Dharmendra.
14:57We've all spoken about how many filmmakers actually repeated Dharmendra in his film, because he was one of the few actors who believed that it was not just his work.
15:07He wanted, ki film changa banna chahiye ji.
15:10Or he always worked towards the betterment of the film.
15:13He always wanted his films to do well at the box office.
15:16And he was a collaborative actor.
15:18And this is the reason why the industry also grew so much love and respect for this man.
15:23And rightly mentioned, he was, of course, an outsider.
15:26And he never actually went ahead and spoke at length, even for his sons to give them work.
15:32He did not launch his sons.
15:34Of course, he did work with them.
15:35But there was a lot more speculation about him, kind of his grandsons, who also kind of entered.
15:42And he, of course, worked with Karan Diyol.
15:44But an outsider in those times and in a time when Rajesh Khanna, Amitab Bachchan and Vinod Khanna were such big stars.
15:51Dharmedra coming ahead and making his own mark is an example.
15:55And this is the legacy that we are all talking about right now.
15:58What we are all reading about right now.
16:00And what has inspired many, many generations of actors.
16:04Salman Khan, for example, has often spoken about how he's been inspired by Dharmedra.
16:09And he looks at him as a father figure.
16:11Dharmedra on his part has also mentioned how he sees his younger self in Amitab.
16:16In Salman Khan being the flamboyant personality that he is.
16:20And Shah Rukh, Govinda, Ranveer Singh, Ranveer Singh, Ranveer, working in Rocky and Rani.
16:25No, Sana, he was this one actor who had it all.
16:27He could do a romantic role.
16:28Absolutely.
16:29He could do a fighting role.
16:31He could do comedy.
16:32Chupke, chupke is an absolute brilliant example of that.
16:35On such brilliant, dry humour that he brings out to the screen.
16:39And towards till the very end, we were just playing out pictures of his 89th birthday.
16:43Just to remind our audiences, he's just a few weeks shy, I believe, from his 90th birthday as well.
16:50And there he was with a big sword cutting his cake with Sunny Deol.
16:54If those pictures can be played up again for our viewers to go through.
16:57But he looked pretty alright in those pictures, actually.
17:01You see, that's the picture on your screen right now where the fans come together.
17:05A lot of folks from Punjab have come together.
17:07And Sunny Deol, along with Bobby, he goes there to cut his cake outside the same house that you are standing at the moment.
17:13Those times, of course, the sentiments are very different.
17:15Today, I'm sure, fans must have turned up.
17:22Yes, we are seeing a little fans here.
17:25But I think a lot more have arrived, went to the Pawan Hans Crematorium ground after his mortal remains were transferred.
17:31However, as you rightly mentioned, his birthday, he was a true Punjabi.
17:35And he always believed in living life king size.
17:39And not just, I mean, in good health, he also kind of reinvented himself and adapted to new times.
17:45He was one of the very few actors from those times who were so active on social media.
17:50I mean, one look at it and you'll realize how friendly he is with the Gen Z audiences.
17:55When it comes to reciting shairies or even posting videos of him having water, physiotherapy or just talking to trees at his farmhouse.
18:04He absolutely was someone who every generation related to.
18:08Sir, I'm so sorry, I'm interrupting you for the moment.
18:10I'm interrupting you for a moment because I believe we've got a report from his village.
18:15This is our colleague, Aman Bharatwaj, who brings us a report from the village, the streets where Dharmendra actually grew up.
18:22And for the first time, dreamt of being an actor.
18:25Take a look.
18:27This is the particular house what turned Dharmendra to a big star.
18:31And he all has memories from this house that when he visited the railway station or when he went to Dwaraha,
18:39where he first sent the letter application for his film career.
18:44And this is the house now renovated.
18:47And you see here written Dharmendra house.
18:48And this was the house because ancestral village of Dharmendra is Dango village in Ludhiana, which is 30 to 40 kilometers from here.
18:58But now this is the old image.
19:01This house was previously in yellowish color with blue windows and blue colored doors.
19:08And this was the house where Sunny Deol and family of Dharmendra Jee spent their entire life.
19:16And Sunny Deol even, people share the stories that he spent his childhood here.
19:20And this is a house which in the last two years has been renovated.
19:25But as a tribute or just to keep the memories alive, this house has been renamed as Dharmendra house.
19:31And also people here tell to tell how the story been of Dharmendra, how from being a student of this school here in Sanewal.
19:43His father was a teacher in this school, which is a neighbor to this house.
19:49So he used to study here.
19:51And in these streets, he has spent his childhood.
19:55And here he has shared all his memories that how Dharmendra was here, how he played here, how his mother used to treat him in childhood,
20:09how the Dharaha post office where he sent first letter application for his audition and reciting the Gayatri Mantra.
20:19So he has shared their stories.
20:21And this is a particular school where Dharmendra Jee has studied.
20:25And he was in 8th when partition happened.
20:29And his father used to teach here to the entire village.
20:34And people, whether here or in their ancestral village, Dango or Nasrali, which is in Ludhiana itself, where Dharmendra Jee was born.
20:45So people have many memories.
20:48And they share that he never acted as a big star, but he was always down to earth, keep asking about the villagers, keep sharing his stories.
20:58And he was always a true Punjabi and a true farmer, which remained in himself entire his life.
21:06True Punjabi and a true farmer.
21:07In fact, one of those who actually spoke, one of the very few voices in Bollywood who spoke out during the farmers' protest as well,
21:14in favour of the farmers asking for truce to be met over there.
21:18But let's take a look at how his co-stars, his actors remember Dharmendra today.
21:24We spoke with a couple of them.
21:26This is what we've caught up, the best of them all through the day.
21:29Because, in so many days, he was not well.
21:38We were just praying.
21:41For me, I can say this, that I have started my career with the blessing of Dharmendra.
21:56The first time I met some big star, I was such a humble person.
22:07He was with Dharmendra and all the time he helped me.
22:11And later on, I have become there like a family member.
22:16But I was, I worked so many films with Dharmji and also Sunny, Bobby.
22:27And recently, Dharmji has done a play for my daughter.
22:34I don't know what to say.
22:36It's a, it's a vacuum will never, you know, will fill up by anyone.
22:41And Dharmji is, by nature, was very childlike.
22:49And especially, he had a great sense of humor.
22:53And I don't know.
22:54But I'm sure he must be listening.
23:05It's a great sorrow for the family and the children.
23:12And I feel that the industry really lost someone who was like a God-gifted.
23:21And he really struggled to live.
23:25And he helped many people to live.
23:28He was very, very protective to me.
23:31I mean, like a family member, you know, all that time.
23:37And I seen him when I was, didn't know, in Terence of Nine because of my father, you know, him and Kubat.
23:46They were close, you know.
23:48So, and he had come.
23:50And he loves his family because Sunny Dolce Lye, he literally, because I don't know anything of Gahail Pitcher.
24:00But he came home and he told Basman,
24:05So, I remember that evening when he had come.
24:15And he was so confident that I cannot say no to him.
24:19He, in one pocket, he didn't have a signing amount.
24:22In one pocket, he didn't have a agreement.
24:27He said, you sign it.
24:28So, if someone is not well-wissured or doesn't love him,
24:34He's dumb or a star.
24:36He doesn't come to our house.
24:38That means, he, his children are lucky to have him.
24:44And even, I'm sure,
24:46I'm sure the next generation will learn something.
24:48Let's also now take you back in time, back in 2007, AIFA Awards, where Jay was seen honoring his viru.
25:00Here's Amitabh Bachchan, heaping praise on Dharmedra for the lifetime achievement award.
25:05This is how he remembered him.
25:07This is indeed a very special moment for me.
25:12And I'd like to thank AIFA for giving me the opportunity to present this award to an outstanding human being.
25:19His name is Dharmedra.
25:26Dharamji, or Paji, as we all lovingly call him, is my neighbor in Mumbai.
25:36Today, we live just about 50, 60 feet from each other.
25:43But we never meet.
25:46And we have to travel all the way to Yorkshire to get to see him.
25:50What can I say about Dharamji that hasn't already been said, already been seen, already been heard?
26:00Apart from being such a versatile artist,
26:05the most important and really touching quality about Dharamji
26:11is that he is the most wonderful friend and the most wonderful human you can ever come across.
26:23I want to share a very deep secret about Dharamji and myself.
26:29If it wasn't for Dharamji, I would never have been working with him in the film Shole.
26:37It was he that recommended my name for the film Shole.
26:41And it was because of his insistence
26:43that Mr. Ramesh Sipi took me in that film.
26:47I'm eternally grateful to you, Dharamji.
26:49Ladies and gentlemen, a standing ovation for this great human.
26:52Dharamji.
26:53Dharamji.
27:11And even off-screen, Dharamji remained timeless.
27:25His charm on social media, with his playful, real, raw, radiant persona,
27:42from doting grandfather moments to heartfelt family glimpses.
27:47He bridged generations and captured the attention of one and all.
27:51Though he's no longer with us,
27:53his digital diaries keep his laughter, love and legacy alive forever.
27:58Take a look at this report to take you through all of that.
28:00He was the evergreen star, who ruled our hearts for over six decades.
28:17And apart from the big screen, Dharamji also won hearts on social media.
28:32Here's looking back at how the digital diaries of Dharamji continue to inspire generations.
28:38Dharamji.
29:08At the age of 89, the superstar was the inspiring grandpa of the internet,
29:17living a life with the innocence of a child and the grace of a poet.
29:21His world may have moved from film sets to farmlands,
29:25but his spirit still shone bright.
29:27Gliding through water,
29:57with a twinkle in his eye waving to his fans through the lens of his phone.
30:02Dharamindra in recent years became one of Instagram's most fun personalities.
30:07No filters, no fancy edits, no planned content.
30:13Just Dharamindra being Dharamindra.
30:16Real, raw and radiant.
30:18And then there was also his musical side, soft, nostalgic, flowing like an old melody on a rainy evening.
30:43When Dharamindra sang, it wasn't just a tune we heard, it was nostalgia knocking on our hearts.
30:51While our parents watched him in black and white films, we got to witness his charm and magic as we scrolled through our reels.
30:59And if you thought only the boomers or millennials were his fans, you were mistaken.
31:14From people in their 70s to 17-year-olds.
31:18His fandom consisted of people across age groups.
31:22Jainzis have often dropped heartfelt comments on Dharamindra's posts.
31:27From calling him Dharampaaji to legend.
31:34He was also seen speaking to the trees, greeting his cows and singing to the breeze.
31:40And his acres on the line is shown here.
31:45His hands are not clear that what is the line of the line is.
31:47He has a leaner of another hill to break there.
31:50He took it out and took it here.
31:51The ground has just been a hard one.
31:53He has no hope to help him.
31:56He can't say everything is Ži.
31:57The solid water is for a living.
32:01He has air in the ground.
32:02He has oil towards the ground.
32:04He can give anything.
32:06He can give anything.
32:08Apart from the lovely inspirational content, his posts also gave us insight into his family
32:28life and his time with the ever-grounded deals.
32:32From being the doting grandpa to the loving and proud father, thanks to Instagram, we
32:38also got to see the man behind the legend.
32:45In a world chasing perfection, Dharmendra celebrated imperfection.
32:51He laughed at himself, shared his aches, sang his memories, and somehow we all felt a little
32:59lighter.
33:00His posts reminded us that aging isn't about fading away, but glowing differently.
33:07It's also about connecting with the newer generation.
33:10Today, he may not be here with us, but his social media posts will always keep him alive
33:17in our hearts.
33:18When we think of Dharmendra, perhaps one movie really stands out for everyone.
33:24It is Shole, right?
33:25It was written by the legendary Salim Javed.
33:28And in fact, Javed Akhtar wrote along with Mr. Salim lots of movies.
33:33This included the 1975 iconic Shole, then it had Yadu ki Bharat.
33:34So we thought who better than Javed Akhtar to really try and understand what this legacy
33:38is.
33:39is that Dharmendra actually leaves behind.
33:40An era has come to an end.
33:41An era has come to an end.
33:42An era has come to an end.
33:43We see it so often that it has exhausted.
33:44That's the end of the period of the period of the period of the period of the period of
33:48the period of the period of the period of the period of the period of the period of the
33:49period.
33:50And in fact, Javed Akhtar wrote along with Mr. Salim lots of movies.
33:51This included the 1975 iconic Shole.
33:53Then it had Yadu ki Bharat.
33:56So we thought who better than Javed Akhtar to really try and understand what this legacy is that Dharamendra actually leaves behind.
34:07An era has come to an end.
34:10We say it so often that it has lost its gravitas.
34:14But with Dharamji too, with him an era has come to an end.
34:19He was the last symbol of this era where there were such actors, such directors.
34:24There was a particular way of making films and so on, which has all changed.
34:31He was the last memory, the last proof of that time.
34:35There is no doubt about it.
34:37And I've been fortunate enough to be associated with this one right from the beginning.
34:41When I came to film industry, he was so nice to all of us assistants, particularly me.
34:48As if he's my elder brother who is asking me to do something or whatever.
34:53He was gentle, decent, nice, having a sense of humor, talking to us with a smile.
35:04I mean, he was a very unusual person.
35:07Gentle, decent, nice, qualities of a real-life hero, clearly.
35:15Well, Dharamendra was a man who made laughter seem effortless and charm eternal.
35:20Beneath his tough exterior lay a warmth that could light up any screen
35:24and a smile that had the power to win over an entire nation.
35:28His sense of humor also was ageless, proving that true heroes don't just battle villains,
35:34they make the world laugh as well.
35:36He wasn't just the he-man of Bollywood.
35:45He was the man with the perfect comic time.
35:48He was the man with the perfect comic time.
35:48From his charm, dimples, to his effortless humor,
36:01Dharamendra proved that behind that macho image
36:04beats the heart of a true entertainer.
36:12Long before memes and reels ruled our laughter,
36:17it was the witty one-liners of Dharamendra
36:19and hilarious expressions that had the nation in splits.
36:22In Chupke Chupke, directed by Arishikesh Mukherjee,
36:36he delivered one of Hindi cinema's most iconic comic performances,
36:40a masterclass in subtle humor and situational comedy.
36:44How can we miss Sita or Gita,
37:01where his chemistry with Hema Malini
37:04added a fresh flavor of laughter and romance?
37:07And of course, Shole, the legendary Veeru,
37:28funny, flirtatious and fearless,
37:31became one of Bollywood's most loved characters.
37:37His chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan
38:06gave Hindi cinema some of its most quotable moments,
38:09and his hilarious suicide act on the water tank
38:12remains pure gold.
38:14Whereas in Naukar Bhivika,
38:29his portrayal of a husband juggling multiple identities
38:33led to side-splitting confusion
38:35and laugh-out-loud chaos.
38:38But the comic talent of Dharamendra
39:00wasn't just limited to blockbusters.
39:02Films like Dillaghi and Pratigya showcased his range.
39:07How did you go from here?
39:08How did you go from here?
39:09How did you go from here?
39:11Why did you go from here?
39:12Why did you go from here?
39:13I'll go from here soon.
39:15I'll go from here soon.
39:16Left, left, left, left, right!
39:20In each role, his humor was organic,
39:24never overdone,
39:25a style that made him stand apart
39:28from the loud comedy of the time.
39:48Years later,
39:49he passed that legacy of laughter
39:51to the next generation.
39:53With Yamla Pagladiwana,
39:56a nostalgic, laugh-out-loud ride
39:58featuring all three deals.
40:01You're so intense, manji.
40:04Now, Saima,
40:05Karamvir, who's going to be with Karamvir?
40:07But he's going to be with Karamvir, right?
40:11With Karamvir?
40:12With Karamvir?
40:13And what's he put on me?
40:15I'm going to be with Karamvir.
40:18And let's go with Karamvir.
40:20And let's go with Karamvir.
40:21And he's going to be with Karamvir.
40:23Where are you going to play?
40:24Where are you going to play?
40:25I'm going to play.
40:26This is the new girl.
40:27Your feet and feet and legs
40:29are not the same as your feet and legs.
40:30Decades may pass,
40:32styles may change,
40:33but his laughter will forever echo
40:35through Bollywood.
40:37Tell me,
40:38I'll be with you.
40:39You'll be with me.
40:40Huh?
40:41Go, go.
