03:17We pay tribute to Dharmendra.
03:18He wasn't just an actor.
03:21He defined a whole era.
03:23His charm, strength, simplicity, more than anything else, shaped generations of cinema lovers.
03:30From a young dreamer in Punjab to one of India's most loved superstars across generations,
03:36Dharmendra's journey wasn't just about stardom.
03:39It was also about who he was as a person.
03:41He was a superstar, yes, but was also a superhuman.
03:45His sincerity, soul, his unshakable love for the movies, all of it coming across.
03:53It's hard to imagine Hindi cinema without him.
04:04That smile.
04:06That sparkle in the eyes.
04:08And that old-school charm that could melt through the screen.
04:13He was just a young boy from Punjab when he first dreamt of becoming an actor.
04:19It became an open secret that Dharmendra used to walk miles to watch Dilip Kumar films.
04:26A lover of cinema, passionate about acting, his journey started after he won a magazine talent contest in 1958.
04:36With looks to die for, it wasn't long before filmmakers lined up at his gates.
04:41His early films, Bandhani,
04:48Anupama,
04:50Dewar,
04:59Satyakam,
05:03showed us the sensitive side of a man who could convey heartbreak without saying a word.
05:19Directors loved him, not just for his looks, but for that rare sincerity he brought to every frame.
05:35How was that girl?
05:36How was that girl?
05:37Don't tell her.
05:38Don't tell her.
05:39Don't tell her.
05:40Don't tell her.
05:41Then came Phool or Patthar.
05:42The film that changed everything.
05:44Patth!
05:45Patth!
05:46What is it?
05:47The woman in your house.
05:48The woman in your house.
05:49What?
05:50A reluctant hero.
05:51A strong man with a soft hand.
05:53What's that?
05:54Allah!
05:55Allah!
05:56Allah!
05:57It became the defining image of Dharmendra.
06:00It also earned him his first Filmfare nomination for Best Actor and set the box office ablaze.
06:17That was just the beginning as what followed was a golden run that lasted for decades.
06:23From films like Mera Gaon Mera Desh.
06:38Jugnu.
06:40West, James Bond.
06:42East, Jugnu.
06:44Yadu ki Bharat.
06:46To knocker BMW Ka.
06:51Tindali.
06:52Could you see?
06:54Is that with a
07:10raja jani.
07:12What is happening?
07:14Yes, that's what I was saying.
07:17What's the name of the Lord?
07:20Emmett.
07:21Goodie.
07:22Autograph.
07:24What is it?
07:25Anupama?
07:27How did you see?
07:29Three.
07:30Oh, my God.
07:31And Dream Girl.
07:32Hey, Dream Girl, Dream Girl,
07:36Kis-i-shair ki-zazal, Dream Girl,
07:39Kis-i-dheel ka-kawal, Dream Girl,
07:42these films made him one of the most bankable stars in Indian cinema.
07:48Many say that he was the ultimate box office star,
07:51and his films earned more money than even Amitabh Bachchan's.
07:55Wow, wow!
07:56What's the deal?
07:58He wasn't afraid to experiment, either.
08:01He played the tough guy who punched villains in Pratigya,
08:06and the sweet professor in Chupke-Chupke,
08:12both with equal conviction.
08:15He tickled funny bones in Seetha Aur Geeta.
08:22And made sure we teared up watching Hakikat.
08:33He wasn't just loved by audiences, he was respected by the industry.
08:41A star who never competed, but quietly conquered.
08:44Even during the fierce rivalries of the 70s,
08:56when Rajesh Khanna was the heartthrob and Amitabh Bachchan the angry young man,
09:01Dharmedra held his ground, charming audiences with grace that's still spoken highly about.
09:10He never hesitated to share the frame with another star,
09:13whether it was Shole with Amitabh Bachchan,
09:16the burning train with Vinod Khanna,
09:25and Dharambeer with Jitendra.
09:32Dharamendra believed cinema was about collaboration, not competition.
09:41Apart from the many awards, honours and trophies,
09:49Dharamendra was honoured with the Padmabhushan in 2012.
09:54But perhaps his biggest award was the unwavering love of his fans.
10:00He had often spoken about being remembered as a good man.
10:04And that's exactly how everyone will talk about him.
10:09Today, as we say goodbye to Dharmendra,
10:12we celebrated the life of a man who gave Indian cinema its soul.
10:18The spotlight may dim, but his warmth, his laughter,
10:22and that disarming smile, they live on forever.
10:28You are truly the heart of Indian cinema, Dharampaji.
10:34And those were the life and times of Dharamendra, as we've seen him on the silver screen.
10:43But I'm joined now by Rajdeep Sardesai, who's seen him off the screen too, met him so many times.
10:48Rajdeep, you know, where do we begin when we're talking about Sabhar, who has such a rich legacy?
10:53But what I'd like to talk about is Dharmendra beyond the superstar.
10:57Rajdeep, you know, he was referred to as the he-man, but in so many of the anecdotes I've heard in the last few hours about him,
11:04he wasn't really your superhero kind of personality in real life.
11:08You know, he was simple, he was humble, he was down-to-earth, and I think that's what made him so loved.
11:15Absolutely. Even in that arbitrary, the word simplicity defined Dharmendra.
11:21He was always still the boy who'd come from a small village in Ludhiana, went through Fagwara,
11:27and then eventually came to the Hindi film industry.
11:31I don't think he forgot his roots ever, and therefore never had the kind of starry airs that you might find with one-hit wonders today.
11:40Dharmendra delivered hit after hit, but if you met him, you felt that you were just meeting another passionate professional.
11:48And I still recall Akshita, when he became an MP from Bika Nair, he didn't come very often to parliament.
11:55When he did, he would sit quietly in Central Hall, and would have a cup of chai, and would invite the journalist to have a cup of tea with him,
12:04and we would just chat about life. And he would mostly listen, never sort of brag about his various achievements in the film world.
12:14So it was a rare example of someone, the more successful he became, it seemed the more humble he was.
12:21And I think that's what endeared him to so many. You'll never hear anyone say a harsh word about Dharmendra.
12:29And think about the range of directors he acted with, as someone who worked with the great Rishikesh Mukherjee and Bhimal Roy on one side,
12:38but also worked with the likes of Arjun Hingorani, who had given him his first break in cinema in the 1960s,
12:44and to many others, like Ramesh Sipi, who gave him Shole, Dharmendra's directors loved repeating Dharmendra in film after film,
12:54because all said and done, he was the most bankable star that you could get,
12:58and someone who didn't have all the starry airs that often come with stardom.
13:03So I think that is something that always stood out. Someone who was very happy to have a cup of chai with you,
13:10to crack a joke, he had a nice sense of humour, and at the same time, never made you feel that you were someone who was talking to this big star of Hindi cinema.
13:22Rajdeep, you know, the way you describe Dharmendra as someone being so simple and down-to-earth,
13:28I know today a lot of fans are asking, why didn't we get a chance to bid one final goodbye to Dharmendra?
13:35Do you think that the funeral also is as simple, because that's what he believed?
13:39And there he would put out the odd Instagram video, but if you wanted to meet him, you had to go to the farmhouse.
13:57He didn't really like to be seen at flashy star parties.
14:02He was happier being in the company of friends, in the privacy of his home.
14:10So I guess that was one reason, because the Devuls themselves have been a very intensely private family.
14:15You look at Sunny Devul in particular, who's, you know, who rarely but ever will sort of give a spate of interviews.
14:22So I think Dharmendra was a product of an age where the pre-social media age, if you want to call it that,
14:30the pre-computer age, someone, therefore, who didn't need the media glare.
14:36And maybe even in death, his family decided that a quiet funeral was perhaps a better way to honor and respect him
14:43than the tam-jaam or some kind of a tamasha that may come with a carcade, which often happens when celebrities pass away.
14:51Rajdeep, finally, you know, you always accuse me of not knowing enough about our Hindi film legends.
14:57Say, if you were to recommend to me five Dharmendra movies that I should watch tonight, what would they be?
15:04My God, Rakshita, you're putting me really on the spot by asking me this question.
15:08Okay, let me divide it decade-wise.
15:10So if you want to watch films of the 60s, I suggest you watch Fool or Pathar and a choice between Anupama and Satyakaam.
15:18And you can also watch a bit of Hakikat. And you will be teary-eyed watching Hakikat for sure.
15:24If you like action, then watch Yado Ki Barat and Jugnu from the 1970s.
15:31You can also watch, if you like entertainers, watch both Shole and Sita Aur Gita.
15:37If you like comedy, watch Chupke Chupke and Naukri Bibi Ka.
15:41And if you want to see Dharmendra act as a character artist late in his life, then Rocky or Rani Ki Prem Kahani.
15:49And that's just a slice that I'm giving you. Because you know, quite remarkably, there were two years, one was in the 1970s.
15:57I remember 73, he delivered 11 hits. I don't think any other star, possibly Rajesh Kanna, has delivered 11 hits in one calendar year.
16:06And that is what Dharmendra was. He was a star, he knew he was a star, but he also enjoyed being an actor.
16:14I keep telling people who say, you know, was Dharmendra really an actor?
16:18I said, when Rishikesh Mukherjee repeats you in film after film, then you must be bloody well a good actor.
16:25And that's exactly what Dharmendra was. But above all else, he was a wonderful human being.
16:30But don't forget all the films that I've recommended. It's going to take you a long while to finish them.
16:34But I've taken it all down. I've noted them all down, Rajdeep.
16:37And I definitely plan to watch them to really, you know, get a sense of some of the best work of Dharmendra.
16:44Rajdeep has listed it all down for you there.
16:46Thank you very much, Rajdeep, for joining us here.
16:489pm, of course, Rajdeep will be paying a special tribute to the he-man of Bollywood, as he was referred to Dharmendra.
16:54Thanks, Rajdeep.
16:58Let's run you through and let's go down memory lane and talk about some of the most iconic dialogues of Dharmendra.
17:04Take a look at some of those.
17:05I'll go down, I'll go down, I'll go down, I'll go down, I'll go down.
17:13I'll go down.
17:15I'll go down.
17:16Come on, come on, come on.
17:17I'll go down.
17:18I'll go down, brother.
17:19What was for Majnun, for Leila, for Ranja, for Heer, for Romeo, for Juliet, for Juliet.
17:28Suicide!
17:29Suicide!
17:30Suicide!
17:31Suicide!
17:32interventions!
17:33The
17:33Aajarshinder!
17:35U Narayよね.
17:36Oh, boy.
17:37Do you want to SF Story?
17:39But don't ask this child.
17:39You will take out our eyes.
17:42This is very운 terrifying story.
17:44You have emotions, drama, tragedy.
17:53He was a young man, but he killed his brother in the middle of the beach.
18:00We can't live in this world.
18:04Kavalo, you give me my last salam.
18:09Goodbye! Goodbye!
18:13Kavalo, I'm coming.
18:17I'm coming.
18:20Kavalo, Kavalo!
18:22Kavalo, Kavalo!
18:24You, you guys are coming outside.
18:27I'm coming.
18:31We're going to continue getting you all of the anecdotes, the tributes that have poured in for Dharmendra on the other side of a very short break here on India Today. Stay with us.
18:43Now we're coming.
18:46We'll meet you.
18:48We'll meet you.
18:49We'll meet you.

19:28Joining us here on India today for our special broadcast
19:56where we pay tribute to the superstar, to the he-man of Bollywood, Darmendra.
20:02He redefined love across generations and decades
20:04and then he returned decades later in Rocky or Rani ki Prem Kahani.
20:09It wasn't just a normal comeback, it was nostalgia wrapped in magic.
20:15One smile, one scene, Darmendra proved true charm and romance
20:20actually never fade with time.
20:26He's the man who defined romance before romance had rules.
20:42And when he returned to the big screen in Karan Johar's Rocky or Rani ki Prem Kahani,
20:49it wasn't just a comeback.
20:51It was a homecoming for Bollywood's original heartthrob, Darmendra.
20:55Shibla Coffee House
20:58His return came after almost five years.
21:17Before Rocky or Rani ki Prem Kahani,
21:20the legend was last seen in the 2018 comedy
21:23Yamla Pagla Dibana Phrase.
21:25This time, his chemistry with Chaban Azmi became the soul of the film,
21:30a love story that was beyond age, beyond time.
21:34This time, his chemistry with Chaban Azmi became the soul of the film,
21:50a love story that was beyond age, beyond time.
21:54And the world is 1966, a love story and beauty from Bollywood,
21:55from the fascist from this city.
21:57Was born as a father, a love story and she grew up with Chaban Azmi,
21:59from the beginning.
22:00Shibla Coffee House
22:01Is born as a father, a love story and she grew up with Chaban Azmi.
22:02And the individual's hero and she grew up with Chaban Azmi than a father,
22:03and the second one was far from the experience of Chaban Azmi.
22:04And the family and she grew up with Chaban Azmi.
22:05And the story about Chaban Azmi.
22:07In the romantic comedy drama, Darmendra and Shabana's parallel track beautifully mirrored
22:34the passion and depth of Rocky and Rani's young life.
22:39The film even grabbed headlines for that one memorable moment, a brief yet heartwarming
22:45kiss between Darmendra and Shabana's.
22:51In fact, in one of the interviews, Darmendra opened up about the kissing scene.
22:59He said, and we quote,
23:00I am hearing that Shabana and I have surprised the audience with the kissing scene, and at
23:06the same time, they have even applauded it.
23:09I think people weren't expecting it, and it came very suddenly, which is why it created
23:15an impact.
23:16The last time I did a kissing scene was in Life in a Metro with Nafis Ali, and at that
23:22time too, people had appreciated it.
23:25When Karan narrated the scene to us, I did not get excited.
23:28We understood it, and I realized that it was something that the film required, and wasn't
23:34forcefully put in, and I said, I will do it.
23:38Also, I believe there is no age for romance.
23:41Shabana and I both did not feel any kind of awkwardness while doing it, as it was very
23:47aesthetically shot.
23:48For the worst, Rocky and Rani Kiprem Kahani, which stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt,
24:02in lead roles.
24:16Darmendra once again proved, you don't retire from magic.
24:21You simply return, and rule hearts, all over again.
24:25And today, once the news came in of Darmendra Ji's passing, friends, family, fans across
24:40the country have come together to mourn the loss of the Bollywood legend.
24:44Let's show you the tributes that poured in from his Bollywood colleagues.
24:49Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Tata, Aamir Khan, and a host of other Bollywood stalwarts
24:54gathered at Ville Parley today to pay their final respects to Darmendra, a tribute to the
25:00legend who inspired millions.
25:06Shah Rukh Khan arrived at the crematorium to stand in solidarity with the Deol family and
25:11extend his condolences, a quiet, emotional moment, as Bollywood's biggest star joined
25:17in offering support during this difficult time.
25:24Among the several Bollywood celebrities, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukono also were there
25:29at the crematorium to pay their last respects to Darmendra.
25:32Clad in white, they resonated with the heavy grief sweeping the film fraternity and its fold.
25:41Prime Minister Modi also expressed his condolences over the passing of the Bollywood icon, calling
25:47it the end of an era in Indian cinema.
25:49In a tribute poster on social media, Prime Minister Modi highlighted how Darmendra's diverse roles
25:55resonated with millions, noting his charm, depth, and ability to strike a chord with audiences.
26:01The Prime Minister also praised his simplicity, humility, and warmth, extending his condolences
26:05to Darmendra's friends, family.
26:11But Darmendra will live on, live on in the hearts of so many fans as he continues to live
26:24on for generations through his work and so many iconic dialogues that come to mind when
26:29you think of some of his most memorable films.
26:32We take a look at some of those dialogues.
26:34We take a look at some of those who have taken care of the force that is made of the
26:35people.
26:36We take care of others and we take care of each other.
26:37We take care of each other.
26:38We take care of each other.
26:39We take care of each other.
26:40Where is this wholesome?
26:41Very good.
26:42Very good.
26:43There is a one's own horse on the stage.
26:47You can't recognize the men of the armed men.
26:52I can speak with you.
26:55You do not make a mistake.
26:55I can speak with you.
26:57Yourad is too late.
26:58You have to take care of me once again.
27:00I have to take care of the number of the men.
27:02This is not the case. This is not the case.
27:07This world is very big. You can learn to kill yourself.
27:13If you've tried to come to my way, I'll go back to you.
27:20It's been my fault.
27:23You've forgotten what you've forgotten.
27:27You've forgotten what you've forgotten.
27:29I've forgotten that I'm talking about the biggest fan of Pratap.
27:37What did I say?
27:39I'm going to take a chance to remember such a bad man.
27:46We've also got to play the games.
27:49Tell us about the game and play with our dogs.
27:55Good night, Pratap.
27:57If these people have taken my hands and cut my father?
28:03If this is going to be proven that it is the other one.
28:07Then will you give my father's hands and give me back?
28:11We were ready, Mr. Dhiram.
28:14Two of us were cut in this mockery.
28:16We were taken in this mockery.
28:17The mockery was your father.
28:19If the government is doing so, then the poor people are going to be the king.
28:25This time, you don't be afraid of yourself. You are taking a job.
28:29That's what? That's why the law has failed you.
28:34But one thing you should remember is that if you are living with the poor people's lives,
28:42foreign
29:12Yeah, I'm good to know
