00:57Bollywood icon Dharmendra, known as the he-man of Hindi cinema,
01:02passed away at the age of 89,
01:04just days before what would have been his 90th birthday on December 8th.
01:10His towering presence grazed Indian cinema for over six decades,
01:15and his passing away truly marks the end of an era.
01:19His final rites were performed at the Pawan Huns crematorium
01:23and was attended by legends like Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan,

01:32and generations of actors.
01:34And as the nation moans the loss of Dharmendraji,
01:37let us reflect on how Bollywood's beloved Veeru
01:41was bid a final farewell
01:43and was said, Alvida, one last time.
01:46A hero.
01:57An icon.
02:01A legend.
02:05The man who defined charm, strength and sheer screen presence for generations.
02:22Hindi cinema's original he-man.
02:26Sabke pyare Dharam Paji breathed his last on Monday at the age of 89.
02:37At Mumbai's Pawan Huns crematorium, the industry gathered with a heavy heart
02:43to bid final farewell to the superstar who lit up their lives.
02:48Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, the Jai from Shole came to say goodbye to Veeru.

03:02to the man who shaped Hindi cinema's golden era.
03:06Govinda also came to say his final goodbye.
03:09And veteran actress, Saira Banu, too offered her last respects to her cherished colleague.
03:15On social media, tributes poured in like a flood of memories.

03:24Forever in power.

03:33thanking him for inspiring generations.
03:36For Karan Johar, his passing marked the end of an era.
03:40Anupam Kher posted a heartfelt video calling him the kindest man ever.
03:55From the south, megastar Chiranjeevi offered his deepest condolences to the Diol family.
04:02India moans not just an actor, but a phenomenon.
04:08A man whose smile lit up the silver screen,
04:11whose presence brought goosebumps.
04:21And whose legacy forever live in the hearts of millions.
04:24Dharam Paji, thank you for the movies and memories.
04:35He has left behind a yadokibarat, and this shole will burn forever.
04:41And joining me now is Jaaved Akhtar, a towering figure in Indian cinema,
04:47renowned poet, lyricist and screenwriter, whose work has defined generations.
04:52And he's someone who has witnessed the golden era of Bollywood, and he's here to reflect on the legacy of legendary Dharmendra,
04:59whose passing marks the end of an era in Indian film.
05:01Jaaved Saab, you have called Dharmendra a very unusual actor and human being,
05:08with a spectrum of gentleness and masculinity.
05:11How do you think this complexity shaped his iconic screen presence?
05:16Somehow, that's why perhaps all the people, and particularly the opposite sex,
05:23found him irresistible and very attractive.
05:25because here was a man who, in spite of looking very masculine, had tremendous gentle and innocent quality.
05:38It was a kind of a very rare combination.
05:41And it was a very difficult combination.
05:43And it was a very difficult combination.
05:46And it was a very difficult combination.
05:50And it was a very difficult combination.
05:53And it was so innate personal life also.
05:56He was on one hand, he was a very strong person,
05:59and a person of great sense of dignity and respect, self-respect.
06:06And on the other hand, he was extremely humble, and extremely almost innocent,
06:12and totally unaware of his stardom.
06:15And he would talk like just another person.
06:20So, perhaps, often I had seen him getting embarrassed about his success.
06:27He was so, so modest.
06:29So, this is a rare combination.
06:31And this rare combination, you watch and observe in his career also,
06:36that he could be the human, he could be the action hero,
06:41but at the same time he could be a very gentle, sophisticated squab,
06:47and reticent person in Anupama or Sathya Khan.
06:52So, this was the rage in his personality and it was in him.
06:57You created that character, Viru.
07:00Tell us about the entire experience, sir.
07:03Well, we had to work with him in Sitar Gita and the same production
07:06directed by Mr. Ramesh.
07:08Please look, somehow when we started developing Shole the script,
07:12it was taken for granted that this role will go to Dharamji,
07:15and Dharamji will do it because we have been working together.
07:19And the way he did it, I think he had put his field on every scene,
07:26every dialogue, the kind of exuberance, the kind of energy level,
07:30the kind of enthusiasm he injected in that role.
07:33It is only his share, only he could do that.
07:37And I wonder if anybody else but Dharamji would have played Viru,
07:42how different it would have been.
07:45So, he was a natural choice?
07:48He really took over and owned that world.
07:54Yeah. You were asking something.
07:56Yes. So, Javed, you said that he owned that world.
08:01That's true.
08:02So, he created that world and you wrote that world.
08:05That's true. That's true.
08:07And he really got into it.
08:09And that is the thing.
08:11Then you see the film where he played a sober, decent, nice, honest person.
08:17And he is totally different and equally convincing.
08:21Equally convincing.
08:23So, this kind of touching both the hands of the spectrum is rare for actors.
08:31So, from Sita Gita to this role.
08:35How did you actually manage theтАж
08:37I think Viru, in a way, was an extension of his role of Sita Gita.
08:44They were actually the same genre.
08:46Viru was much more defined.
08:48But some other films, particularly with Rashida, the kind of film, including Chupke Chupke, where he played a comedy role and it was a comedy film.
08:59The whole sensibility, the wholeтАж I mean, persona changes.
09:06And you feel that, yes, he was made for this kind of a role.
09:10This is a kind of flexibility that he had.
09:13He has a very good personality.
09:15He has a very expressive face.
09:17So, whatever he would do, it goes with that.
09:20So, Javid Sam, how did Dharmendra's personality off screen reflect the characters he portrayed, say, in movies like Shole and Chupke Chupke?
09:32Because each aspect of these were very much alive in his own personality.
09:39He was a nice, simple, decent, polite, gentle person that you can see in Anupama.
09:47He had a great sense of humour.
09:49He had a very early sense of humour that you can see in Chupke Chupke.
09:54He was a powerful man that you can see some of his actions.
09:58He was a man with a lot of enthusiasm and flirtation and humour that you can see in Shole.
10:10So, these roles are the extension of his personality, some side or the other.
10:19And which was your favourite character of Dharmji?
10:25It's very strange, but I will say that I loved him with Anupama.
10:30Great.
10:33And why, Javid Sam?
10:34Because, you know, when you watch him with Anupama, you cannot ever think that this is an actor who will be able to play Viru.
10:46How far he was from this role.
10:51How different he was.
10:53Every self in what he was.
10:55So, you know, he has done a lot of comedy.
11:01He has done a lot of action.
11:03So, it is very difficult to choose among these people.
11:06But, Sathya Kaam or Anupama stand out somewhere else.
11:12So, that is why my attention goes there.
11:15And you have described Dharmendra as possessing a typical Desi sense of humour.
11:22What was this Desi sense of humour that perhaps endeared him to colleagues and also fans alike?
11:29Yes, yes, yes.
11:30He was very innocent.
11:31He was very innocent as humour as he was.
11:33He was very innocent as he was.
11:35He was very innocent as he was.
11:36The young boy was alive in him till last.
11:39The young boy was alive in him till last.
11:42That kid, Punjab, would always be in him.
11:48And what was the jokes like when you say Desi sense of humour?
11:55Did you ever visit his farmhouse?
11:58Yes, of course.
11:59And not only that, I stayed there.
12:01Oh.
12:03And that is where he was totally there.
12:05It's a place to be seen.
12:07He used to be relaxed.
12:08And then in the evening, so often he used to sit with us and recite poetry and listen to my poetry.
12:17And as we talk about other poets, couplets on a particular topic and so on.
12:23So, wow, we had some wonderful time with you.
12:26That is why.
12:28Javid Saab.
12:29Yes.
12:30Yeah.
12:31Dharmendra witnessed the evolution of Indian cinema.
12:34You did the same.
12:35I mean, it's like you all have been part of this golden era.
12:39How would you summarise the era that his passing marks the end of?
12:44My life offers you packages.
12:49It doesn't give you good and bad.
12:51Every package has some good, some bad.
12:53Some ordinary, some extraordinary.
12:55So, there was a package of, say, 60s, 70s, 80s, that had some wonderful things, some weaknesses.
13:03And I can say the same thing about the new package.
13:07Again, the professional efficiency organization has increased to a great extent.
13:13I think that you can say this is the industrial time and that was the feudal time.
13:18So, it's also his charm of the land of the land.
13:23That was kind of the land of the land.
13:26This is the land of the land.
13:28That's the difference.
13:30And what legacy do you believe Dharmendra, I would say, leaves behind for future generations of actors and filmmakers?
13:37I think that he will remain an example and a reference that when young actors are working, they will think, how did he do in Chalte Chalte?
13:52How he did a tough scene, a He-Man scene, how he became so gentle in some of the films.
14:01I think people, you know, generations, learn from generations.
14:05And he will definitely leave an impact and he has an impact on young actors.
14:12And his work will remain there.
14:15He has done some very good work and some important work in commercial cinema.
14:20It will remain, it will be a kind of a reference.
14:25And he was always seen as perhaps the most bankable actor that he delivered hits after the other.
14:31One hit after the other.
14:32Yes, yes.
14:33I think Indian audience loved him.
14:35They loved him and took it for granted that he is our love.
14:40They could relate to him.
14:44Although it is very difficult to relate because he was so handsome.
14:48He was so handsome.
14:50I am talking of 70s, 80s.
14:53He was unbelievable.
14:54Every time when I would see him, and in those times I would see him rather frequently and often because of the film,
15:03every time I would look at him in the house, the man would be so handsome.
15:08So good looking.
15:09He was exceptionally good looking.
15:14When you say exceptionally good looking, there were such good looking actors at that time.
15:18Shashi Kapoor included.
15:19Shashi Kapoor included.
15:20Yes.
15:21Shashi Kapoor was a handsome man.
15:22Shashi Kapoor was an handsome man.
15:23Shashi Kapoor was an handsome man.
15:25But he had an age.
15:28No doubt.
15:29He had an age.
15:32And his following in women, unbelievable.
15:37I have seen that.
15:38Tell us about it.
15:39What did you see when you say that his following among women was unmatical?
15:43All I can't tell you what I saw.
15:44But anyway, I mean, they still really fought for him all around.
15:50I mean, when he would be shooting anywhere, so many women will come to visit him to watch.
15:56A stranger.
15:57Not that he would know them.
15:59But you could see.
16:00You could see them.
16:01One has to be blind.
16:02Had to be blind not to see what kind of expression they have in their eyes when they are looking at it.
16:10Unbelievable.
16:11His popularity was unbelievable.
16:15Javid Sahib, before I let you go, you wrote those dialogues.
16:19You wrote the screenplay.
16:20You wrote the story of Shole.
16:23And you gave that iconic line also to him.
16:26Which became like a trend in those days.
16:31Did you actually see this, see him recite the way he did?
16:35Which line?
16:38Those basanti inke saamne mat nach na.
16:42That's it.
16:48So, today your final thought Javid Sahib, before I let you go.
16:53No, no.
16:54I'm sure that, I mean, not many people are loved in the film industry the way he was loved.
17:03There were hardly any people who met him and were not in love with him.
17:08Everybody was from Holland to love.
17:09This was the barometer somewhere.
17:10Everybody was there.
17:11Some people were fond of him.
17:12Some people liked him.
17:13Some people liked him very much.
17:14And some people loved him.
17:15He was such a likeable person.
17:17And he was so popular among film industry.
17:18Everybody respected him and everybody loved him.
17:19And adored him.
17:20And adored him.
17:21I can't think of many people who got so much of love from film industry, which is a cutthroat,
17:27competitive line.
17:28Where somebody can be so loved by everybody.
17:29Javed Akhtar, really appreciate your time.
17:30Thank you for joining us.
17:51Javed Akhtar, really appreciate your time.
17:56From co-stars to soulmates
18:01When Dharmendra and Hema Malini first crossed paths
18:05On the sets of Tu Haseen Mein Jawan in 1970
18:09Sparks flew instantly
18:11But the time filming wrapped
18:14Their love had already blossomed
18:16He was not just the charismatic key man of Bollywood
18:19But he was the dream girl's dream man
18:22Together they defied boundaries
18:24Navigated through familial tensions
18:27Basanti and Veeru's love
18:29Withstood headlines, scrutiny and tough times
18:33Together they raised their daughters
18:35While maintaining a deeply respectful
18:40And rare bond with his first family as well
18:44Let's look back at their unforgettable
18:47And timeless love story
18:48And how they became Ek Duje Ke Lie
18:51Dharmendra was referred to
18:59As one of the most handsome men in Bollywood
19:01In 1980s
19:03So it seems natural for him
19:13To be everyone's favourite hero
19:16Including that of Hema Malini
19:27Bollywood's dream girl
19:33Just like their stature in Bollywood
19:49Their love story was everything dreamy
19:52Dharmendra and Hema Malini came together
19:55At a time when both were already icons
19:58What followed was a bond that endured admiration
20:02Controversy and decades of togetherness
20:06Today we trace the timeline of a love
20:09That changed the landscape of Bollywood romance
20:13We first met in the early 1970s
20:23On the sets of
20:24Tum Hasee, Main Jawa
20:26Hema Malini was already being hailed
20:33As the dream girl of Hindi cinema
20:35Dharmendra was the charismatic
20:59Soft smiling hero
21:01Who had won the hearts of millions
21:04On screen the chemistry was undeniable
21:08Off screen it began to take shape
21:25Quietly, steadily
21:28Away from headlines
21:29Their pairing lit up some of Hindi cinema's
21:36Most memorable films
21:38Sita and Gita
21:39Shole
21:52Raja Jani
22:18And Dream Girl
22:20But their story did not unfold in simplicity
22:31When they met
22:32Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Gaur
22:35With four children
22:37Sunny, Bobby, Ajaita and Vijaita
22:42The growing bond between him and Hema
22:45Was watched closely
22:47Written about constantly
22:48And judged publicly
22:50In 1980, Dharmendra and Hema Malini
22:54Married
22:55Reportedly converting to Islam
22:59To avoid legal complications
23:02And adopting the names
23:04Dilawar Khan, Keval Krishna
23:06And Aisha B. Rajay
23:08It became one of the most discussed decisions of its time
23:12But through the noise
23:14They remained private
23:16Loyal
23:17And committed to protecting their personal lives
23:20From spectacle
23:21The duo stayed together in Mumbai
23:24While Dharmendra continued to remain close to his first family
23:28It was an arrangement shaped by circumstance
23:31Choice
23:32Choice
23:32And dignity
23:33Rarely spoken about by either of them
23:37Dharmendra and Hema
23:38Turned parents to two daughters
23:40Asha and Ahana
23:43Who grew up away from the glare of controversy
23:46And later stepped into their own creative journeys
23:49Over the years
23:51What once sparked headlines
23:53Settled into a calm companionship
23:55That is marked by grace
23:57And mutual respect
23:58Hema has often quoted
24:01That what drew her to Dharmendra
24:03Was his gentleness
24:05His honesty
24:06The way he made the world feel lighter
24:09Dharmendra called her
24:12His Noor
24:13His Light
24:14A romance that survived fame
24:18Scrutiny and time
24:20In the past few years
24:22Dharmendra was busy staying
24:24At his farmhouse
24:26Or at the Diol house
24:27In Mumbai
24:28With his sons
24:29However
24:30He continues to share
24:32A great relationship
24:33With Hema Malini
24:35And his daughters
24:36The family has always maintained
24:39A cordial relationship
24:40And have always spoken
24:43About each other
24:44With adulation
24:46And respect
24:54Some friendships
24:59They say are bigger than films
25:00Even bigger than fame
25:02Long before
25:04Shole turned
25:05Jai Veeru
25:06Into a legend
25:07Amitabh Bachan
25:08And Dharmendra
25:08Had already shared the scream
25:10Starting with
25:12Chupke Chupke
25:13What followed
25:14Was a bond
25:15Built on trust
25:16Respect
25:17And brotherhood
25:18On and off screen
25:19This is the story
25:21Of a friendship
25:22That shaped Bollywood
25:23And gave us
25:24One of the most
25:25Iconic dosti
25:27This is
25:28Jai Veeru Ki Kahani
25:29Take a look
25:30Chupke Chupke Chupke Chupkech
25:53Oh
26:05Is this guy?
26:07Oh
26:09Oh
26:11Oh
26:13Oh
26:23There are friendships in Bollywood.
26:53And then there is Dharam Amitabh, a bond so iconic, so dramatic and so beautifully filmy that it feels like it was scripted by destiny itself.
27:23One is the he-man of Hindi cinema, All Heart and Humor.
27:53The other is the Shehenshah, All Baritone and Brilliance.
28:05Different temperaments, different journeys.
28:24Yet together they created a friendship that became a cornerstone of Bollywood history.
28:29The 1970s were the golden era of Hinduism.
28:39The 1970s were the golden era of Hinduism.
28:45An era glowing with superstars, blockbuster scripts and unforgettable characters.
28:57The 1970s were the golden era of Hindi cinema.
29:04An era glowing with superstars, blockbuster scripts and unforgettable characters.
29:07The 1980s were involved in Mohong .
29:08Did you use me for this?
29:09The Adheram Raskar was in a position in the city.
29:10It is your way.
29:11It's your way to express the meaning.
29:12The Adheram Raskar, talk at the Enders.
29:13The dream is that we don't understand what you use in Hindi.
29:14The Being without you is that brought from a clan to place a lot of people who should not
29:16speak English in the city.
29:17Did you know that you?
29:18Yes, sir, sir.
29:19But Shant has indeed come true.
29:22We shall not have a control over you before we shall not do that.
29:28Amid this glamour, two men crossed paths on the sets of Sholi, unaware that they were
29:36about to build one of the industry's strongest friendships.
29:53If Bollywood ever had a friendship anthem, it was Jay Viru, and the magic wasn't just
29:59on screen.
30:27In Sholi, Amitabh, as the calm and reserved Jay, perfectly complimented Dharminder's lively
30:50and charming Viru.
30:51Their chemistry became a benchmark for cinematic friendships and is still celebrated today.
31:21In Sholi, Amitabh.
31:28Oh
31:58Yes, sir
32:03Yes, sir
32:05Yes, sir
32:07Yes, sir
32:19Here, Jack
32:23Here, happy star
32:25Huh?
32:38The film's legendary dialogue such as
32:40Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
32:42Symbolized their bond both on and off screen
32:45Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
32:52To─Сenge
32:54Tommagal
32:56Tera saath na chho─Сe
33:00Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
33:08To─Сenge
33:10To─Сenge
33:11Tommagal
33:12Tera saath na chho─Сe
33:16Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
33:18Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
33:20Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
33:22Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
33:24Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge
33:26Yeh Dosti, Hum Nahi To─Сenge

33:48Besides Shole, their camaraderie lit up multiple films.
34:01Chupke Chupke, a priceless gem of Bollywood was yet another iconic Amitabh Bachchan and
34:06Dharminder film, which showcased their effortless humor and unmatched timing.
34:18What you want to do?
34:21Chutka!
34:23Amitabha Yel, I will tell you!
34:25No one will die.
34:29You are a Cuban, don't you?
34:32Why is it going to die?
34:35Tell you something!
34:37She's a vegan!
34:39No, no!
34:41Chupke to Sulekha!
34:45Yes.
34:46You should die.
34:47Yes.
34:48Because I don't have to give up.
34:51You have to respect your own own life.
34:54Yes, sir.
34:56But, please do not give up.
34:59My death is a long term of honor.
35:02My love is a human.
35:05Mr. Chiza, this is great.
35:08Good.
35:09Your spirit is our hands.
35:12Your mouth is a human.
35:14Then there is the 1980 film Ram Balram.
35:28The action thriller directed with Vijayanand narrates the story of two brothers raised
35:34with their evil uncle who killed their parents.
35:49The action thriller.
36:19Another memorable film was Hum Kwon Haim, which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra
36:43in lead roles. The movie, which was the remake of the 2001 Spanish film titled The Others,
36:53showcased how a woman living in an isolated house encounters unknown strangers who are
36:59only visible to her daughter.
37:13Meanwhile, Goodie was an Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra movie in which the stars shared screen space
37:36for a short time frame, whereas in Charandas, the duo made rare special appearances as Kawali
37:50singles.
38:18Similarly, in Naseep, directed by Manmohan Desai, Amitabh and Dharmendra shared the screen
38:24once again, delighting fans with their unforgettable presence.
38:32But what stood out was that their friendship thrived beyond camera lights and frame.
38:38Dharmendra, ever expressive, often spoke with visible fondness about Amitabh's discipline
38:44and generosity.
38:51Amitabh, in turn, frequently described Dharmendra as a man with a golden heart, warm, protective
38:57and impossibly genuine and impossibly genuine.
39:04Their friendship was stitched together with countless anecdotes, shared laughter, long conversations,
39:11quiet gestures, and an unspoken understanding that only true time-tested bonds hold.
39:18Dharmendra, we had to go to the same song.
39:32and an unspoken understanding that only true, time-tested bonds hold.
40:02Dharmaji said, no, no, no, let's go with me.
40:04So, we both went out and had an auto going.
40:09We both went out and ran away from the auto.
40:12It was so far.
40:16So, it was great.
40:19Even today, as the nation mourned Tharminder's passing,
40:22Amitabh was at crematorium to pay his respects.
40:27A quiet, emotional farewell to a friendship that spanned decades.
40:33A friendship like Jai Viru lived in real life.
40:47A friendship that became history.
40:57A friendship, Bollywood will always celebrate.
