02:15A farm boy from Punjab to a Bollywood superstar. No film background, no formal training, no big-ticket contacts.
02:18A farm boy from Punjab to a Bollywood superstar. No film background, no formal training, no big-ticket contacts.
02:25But a screen presence so captivating that would etch cinematic history.
02:32Dharmedra has passed, leaving a time steeped in melancholy.
02:39Taking that proverbial final curtain call.
02:46But what will endure is his legacy.
02:47That warm sepia-tinted image that will forever burn bright in the annals of Indian cinema.
02:53The quintessential superstar in Mumbai, the quintessential superstar in Mumbai, with the warmth of the pinned in Punjab.
03:00And the charm that could hold the world captive.
03:07And the charm that could hold the world captive.
03:09As we mourn his loss, we celebrate his death.
03:12And the charm that could hold the world captive.
03:15As we mourn his loss, we celebrate a life well lived, and the legacy he leaves behind.
03:36And what a life Dharmedra lived, coming from a small town, a small village in Punjab, a farm boy, now a Bollywood legend.
04:03He came to Mumbai, Bombay then, with absolutely nothing but dreams bigger than the village he came from.
04:11And then he went on to etch cinematic history.
04:15Forever be remembered as Dharam Paji.
04:18Our beloved Dharmedra is no more.
04:21He's passed at the age of 89.
04:24Leaving a huge void, a family steeped in mourning.
04:28A nation steeped in mourning.
04:31But that smile will endure.
04:34And it is a life well lived.
04:3689 years rich history is what Dharmedra leaves behind.
04:40The legendary actor, whose towering presence graced Indian cinema for six decades,
04:45was admitted earlier this month at the Breach Candy Hospital due to respiratory failure.
04:50His departure marks the end of an era, but it is an era that will endure.
04:54His final cinematic outing will be Ikkis, which is scheduled posthumously for Dharmedra, release date 25th of December, as a pionant reminder of his legacy.
05:09Constellation of Bollywood's finest gathered at Ville Parle today to pay their respects and then condolences to the family.
05:17The cremation ceremony very, very low-key.
05:20The family wanted a very low-key ceremony where the cremation of Dharmedra was concerned and that was respected by all.
05:28Celebrities, though, poured in through the course of this morning and continue to pour in at Dharmedra's residence.
05:35Solemn tributes have been coming in through the day.
05:40Tributes to the man who defined strength, who defined charm, who defined grace.
05:46As of now, there has been no formal statement from the family.
05:50But the film fraternity and millions of fans moan a hero both on and off the screen
05:56and also celebrate a life well lived and the legacy that will endure.
06:06I want to quickly cut across to my colleague, Sana Farzeen, who's been joining us right outside Dharmedra's residence.
06:13And a steady stream of actors, directors, personalities connected to the Hindi film industry, Sana,
06:23pouring in, offering condolences, a very, very low-key cremation for Dharmedra as wanted and requested by the family.
06:36Absolutely, the family has been wanting to keep it very low-key.
06:40And ever since Dharmedra was discharged on 12th November, he's been at home with his loved ones surrounding him.
06:49Although he was keeping unwell and was in serious conditions, people had not expected that this would happen.
06:56All of a sudden, today morning, ever since then, his loved ones, people who have kind of been inspired by Dharmedra
07:03and looked up to him, have been walking in to be with the Deol family.
07:07At the crematorium ground, we saw Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Dushan Kumar, Rajkumar Santoshi,
07:18all the iconic celebrities, be it actors and filmmakers, coming in to be with the Deol family.
07:24And right now, at his residency, we've been seeing celebrities pouring in.
07:29Kajol, who lives nearby, walked to his home.
07:32And we just saw Farhan Akhtar walking in, coming in with his sister Zoya Akhtar and mother Hari Irani.
07:39Sunil Shetty, with his son Ahan Shetty, Tabbu, Divya Dutta, Sunali Benre, everyone who's worked with the Deol family
07:48and who considered Dharmedra Deol as an iconic figure, have been stepping in to be with the family at this moment.
07:54Although the last rights was low-key, however, people have been coming in to pay their condolences, pay their tribute to the man who's worked for more than six decades
08:05and given so many hit films to the Indian film industry, more than 300 films in six decades.
08:11And he's been an inspiration to generations of actors.
08:15And actors like Salman Khan and Ranveer Singh have spoken so many times about being inspired by Dharmedra.
08:21And we can see that love that ever since Dharmedra was hospitalized, Salman had even visited Dharmedra at the hospital.
08:29Shah Rukh, Amir Khan, Govinda, they had all come to the hospital and today also they were there with the Deol family.
08:35Of course, right now, no official statement has been issued by the family.
08:40However, we understand that at this moment, they all want to be with their loved ones, be absolutely surrounded by their loved ones, Sunny and Bobby Deol.
08:49And now we're going to continue to come back to you. My colleague Sana is joining us outside Dharmedra's residence.
08:55And like we did point out, a steady stream of well-wishers, friends, family coming in condolences for the family, respect, final respects for Dharmedra ji.
09:07You know, I want to also take a moment. While the nation is in mourning, the family steeped in grief where Dharmedra is concerned.
09:15But, viewers, we must celebrate a well-lived rich life, as big as Dharam Paji's heart. That was his life.
09:25And some of the iconic scenes that will go down in the annals of Bollywood history will be remembered.
09:33He created moments that became part of India's collective memory, popular culture till today.
09:38From the Ramgarh water tank, if you remember, to the Sharma household of Chubke Chubke.
09:43Some of his best scenes put together.
09:53From the cowboy of Chambul, Bollywood's original prankster, to the man who made an entire village stop and stare from the top of a water tank.
10:06Dharmedra wasn't just a star, he was a mood. A mood, a whole era of Hindi cinema.
10:31Shole's iconic love confession scene wasn't even in the original script.
10:36Improvised to give Dharmedra his own spectacular moment.
10:43Half drunk, fully dramatic and completely unforgettable.
10:48This is the tank scene that became the soul of Shole's humour and Dharmedra's signature charm.
10:55From drama to comedy, no one taught Hindi like Dharmedra did in Chubke Chubke.
11:14As professor Parimaltrapathi, he turned a simple language lesson into a master class of controlled chaos.
11:33This scene did not just make audience laugh. It proved Dharmedra could outwit even the sharpest co-stars with sheer timing.
12:02Dharmedra said,
12:09Then came the swashbuckling Dharmedra of Dharmedra.
12:14Armor, sword, horse and a presence so powerful it could carry an entire epic on its shoulders.
12:25The thing everyone remembers is Dharmedra himself, effortless, heroic, larger than life.
12:37The thing everyone remembers is Dharmedra himself, effortless, heroic, larger than life.
12:52Dharmedra said,
13:02In loafer, Dharmedra traded royalty for street smart swagger.
13:07Whether it was the iconic chase or his stylish confrontations, the film gifted fans a different shade of the star. Raw, witty, unfiltered.
13:22What did you say?
13:24And we returned to Sholi.
13:25Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
13:27Because no Dharmedra compilation is complete without Veeru teasing, flirting and fighting for Basanti.
13:39His comic timing with Hemamanani, their romance, their on-screen mischief, all of it became part of India's movie vocabulary.
13:47What is your name?
13:48What is your name, Basanti?
13:49Hold on, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
13:54Because we didn't talk to you about it.
13:57But if we were asked for this, we would tell you that our name is Basanti.
14:02First of all, let's go, Basanti.
14:05Basanti?
14:06What's your name?
14:08From a water tank in Ramgarh, to a classroom full of confused students, from swords to Shireen,
14:24from action to absolute absurdity, Tharmendra carved a place in cinema that no one else could
14:31touch.
14:52As we moan Dharmedra's lost, it is important to smile because that is what he's left behind
14:58and that is what will endure for generations on.
15:02In the kind of his work, the body of work that he has left behind that has spanned over six decades.
15:11Grief, yes, but it is a legacy that will endure, that will shine bright on the annals of India's cinematic history.
15:18And joining me on that is Ms. Bhavna Somaya, author, columnist, Indian film journalist and critic
15:24and somebody who had very closely studied the career of Dharmendra.
15:30Bhavna ji, thank you for taking the time out and joining us this evening.
15:34Very few have followed, reported, practically studied a career as closely of Dharmendra as you have, Bhavna ji.
15:45Today, they say it's the proverbial curtain call for a superstar.
15:49It is goodbye, Dharmendra. He leaves behind a legacy that will endure Bhavna ji.
15:54How do you wish he be remembered?
15:59I would like to remember him with a smile.
16:01And I agree with you that though he has passed away, we have his cinema, we have his memories.
16:07And I will not moan him because right now when you were playing all the montages, I was getting so emotional and feeling so nostalgic about it.
16:17I think he defied conventions in many ways.
16:21First, he was this illiterate boy from Punjab, Ajat, who had the dream to come to Mumbai and make it on his own.
16:28And he did. And he was all heart and just through his heart and his good looks, he won over people.
16:35And slowly, as he was molded by the different filmmakers he worked with and he soaked in their sensibilities,
16:42he gave sensitive performances, movie formula, mainstream masala performances.
16:49We seem to forget that he has worked with filmmakers like Rishikesh Mukherjee, Chukke Chukke of course,
16:57but also Anupama, also Satyakaam, where he was so subtle, so succinct and so moving and so introverted.
17:06He had the chance to also work with Gurudad. Unfortunately, Gurudad passed away before the film would be made,
17:13which was Baharip Hirbi Aayangi. And he's worked with so many heroines over the decades.
17:20And somehow they never seemed mismatched. And I think Dharmendra was one hero.
17:27The women thought he was very good looking and also the men thought he was very good looking.
17:33So it was a blending of two genders where everybody thought he was good looking.
17:38And I think he was a very kind-hearted hero because when I was a rookie reporter and I was about to interview him
17:45and I was waiting for a long time to get his interview, he understood that I was very raw and he wanted to give me the interview.
17:53And he said,
17:55And later on, when in the eighties, he was launching his son and was turning a producer for the first time.
18:05And he was so anxious for Sunny. And I remember that we had to do a photo shoot with Amrita Singh.
18:14And my editor was there. I was on the ground. And Sunny was so inhibited and so shy in front of his father.
18:21So he came to us as a magazine. And he said,
18:24And I saw the same thing happen with Sunny and his son, you know, when he had to do a photo shoot.
18:36So it's a very shy family. And Dharmendra was not just a super duper star. Almost all his films were box office grossers over the decades.
18:49And I think very few continued to work till the end the way he did. I mean, his film is going to be released postulistry. His last movie, Dickies.
19:00Also, he flirted with politics and he enjoyed himself. And he said,
19:06And he was also a dormant poet. He wrote in Urdu. He has written innumerable verses.
19:18And I told him so many times that,
19:20I hope his family puts together his verses and makes a book out of it, just so that we get a complete picture of the man.
19:34You know, and you're so right, Bhavna Ji, the way you started, that all those scenes make you emotional,
19:41because it actually not just, you know, gives you a very short glimpse in the filmography of what Dharmendra Ji was,
19:48but also the passing of time, you know, and how it's come full circle. But you're right, you have to remember him with a smile.
19:55He lived a full, good life, right till the end, and befitting, you know, with what he's left behind.
20:02But Bhavna Ji, you speak of him so fondly. You've had such personal experiences with him.
20:08I want to ask you a question. That, in hindsight, with the benefit of hindsight,
20:13was, were critics unkind to him? Because he was so good looking,
20:19that it overpowered the fact that he was also a great actor. Everyone just focused on how great looking that he was.
20:25And he never quite got that due of being a fabulous actor. His comic timing was spot on.
20:32It was a very sensitive point with him. And he has often said in his interviews,
20:36that I was not duly celebrated as an actor. And he said,
20:41I was wearing suits every year. And I thought I would get an award function, but I didn't get it.
20:48But if I thought that I didn't get it, then that's the loss of them.
20:54Because if you look at Chukke Chukke, out of the four performances, he's the best.
20:59True.
21:00Truly the best. So even when he was pitched in a multistarer, whether it was Dharmir or any film,
21:07he always stood out with his timing, with his good looks, and he had a great voice.
21:14I liked his voice. There was so much warmth in his voice and his smile.
21:19He always said that it's very important to be a good human being.
21:23And he also, in a very emotional interview, once told me that my father said that
21:28when you go to bed at night, you should count on your hands how many friends you have.
21:33And if you can count five, five good friends, you are lucky.
21:38I think he had more than five.
21:40You're, you know, so right when you said that he had more than five.
21:44Because when we remember him today, Bhavna ji, and it's, you know,
21:49we've got reporters who are in his pinned in Punjab.
21:52Everyone is speaking of him with moist eyes.
21:55And there is one word which very rarely gets attached to a superstar like him
22:00and the kind of, you know, success that he's seen.
22:03And that is charming, other than just charming, the warmth that he had.
22:07He was such a warm human being. And that is something that filters through.
22:11Do you have any memories of that? Can you recount an incident for us?
22:15I think the fact that for a man who was so good looking, and as you get older,
22:24you don't look the same way that you do. He was not apologetic about it.
22:29He still wanted to embrace life. He wanted to experience an adventure.
22:34What was coming his ways. He made his appearances on television.
22:38He went to the farm. He put up posts of whatever he felt and said,
22:44I think that speaks of great confidence.
22:47That you're not obsessed with your good looks.
22:49And that you are embracing your life, your age, so gracefully.
22:56He wore his heart on his sleeve as well.
22:59You know, we had so many of actors and actresses through the course of the day,
23:03Bhavna Ji, who have spoken with us. Asha Ji had the most wonderful things to say about him.
23:07You know, we had Sharmila Tagore. We had Moshmi Chatterjee.
23:10All three of them have one, you know, common thought.
23:14Where, A, of course, they all say he was very warm and very protective.
23:18They felt safe with him.
23:23See, the character of a person is that when he passes away,
23:27how everybody speaks of him.
23:29And the fact that all his leading ladies who have worked with him during different decades,
23:36speak of him with such warmth.
23:38My one precious memory is when his film Apne was released.
23:45And he had gone to London for the premiere or something.
23:50And I had called him up and Bobby answered the phone.
23:53And I think Bobby must have just passed on the message that he came to the phone.
23:59And Bobby must have not expected that he's going to call back.
24:02But he wanted to know from me what I thought of the film.
24:05And I think that speaks of, again, his heart.
24:10That it's so many years, so many films.
24:13And yet you want the feedback from the people whom you respect or care for,
24:19whatever the association is.
24:21Bhavna Ji, before I let you go, I'm going to ask you, you know,
24:27what is it that one film, you know, that maybe he did not get his due
24:32or he should be remembered by?
24:34How should Dharmendra Ji be remembered?
24:37As a simple man who had big dreams and who accomplished those dreams with his hard work,
24:51he did not throw tantrums.
24:55He did not take his success for granted.
24:58And when there was a lull in his career and when movies stopped coming,
25:02he started charging per day.
25:04And he said that I'm going to make the most of it.
25:08So he was somebody who was ready to experiment with every phase.
25:13You know, even that movie with...
25:15Even now, you know, even in the last couple of years,
25:18you know, rarely somebody this age would be so active,
25:21even on social media.
25:23His reels, his social media posts, they just engage you so much.
25:27Yeah.
25:28And you know, while other actors are not wanting to put themselves out
25:32in responding to you or giving you feedback about something that you posted on them,
25:37because they want to keep themselves discreet or whatever,
25:41he always responded.
25:43I have very, very happy memories of him because I have seen him at his home also with Hemaji.
25:52And they were a wonderful couple.
25:55Very, very normal, natural, everything in size.
25:58Bhavna Sumaya, thank you for taking the time out and joining us.
26:04Happy memories.
26:05And that's a good one and a good way to remember Dharmendra.
26:08I also have with me Tarana Darsh, Indian film critic and trade analyst.
26:12Tarana Darsh, today, how do you look back?
26:16How do you remember Dharmendra ji?
26:17How should he be remembered?
26:19And like I said, you know, I actually feel because he was so overpowerly good looking
26:24that it overshadowed the fact that he was such a terrific actor.
26:28Yes.
26:29You know, of course, he was a good looking man.
26:32I'm sorry I'm using the term was.
26:34To use the term in the past tense for Dharm ji is something that doesn't really come easy to me right now.
26:40But I feel that more than being a good looking man, yes, he was.
26:45He was a very, very, very fine human being.
26:48And I've had so many instances.
26:50I recall so many instances of Dharm ji being so kind to, not just to me.
26:55I mean, there are instances that I would like to narrate.
26:57But there were producers who would come to him and he would be so cute,
27:03go out of his way to accommodate them.
27:05Money being the second part.
27:07You know, money was never an issue with him.
27:09He wanted to help producers.
27:11He wanted to help the fraternity.
27:13He wanted to work, work continuously.
27:16And he used to do three, three, four, four shifts in a day.
27:19I mean, shooting nonstop, helping producers, not charging, foregoing his money.
27:24The kind of work that he's done, the kind of person he was.
27:27He was one actor.
27:28I still remember.
27:30Remember, he was one actor who was so accessible to all.
27:36From the producer, to the financier, to the distributor, to the theatre people, to the spot boy on the sets.
27:44He was there.
27:46People would approach him with their problems and he would really be there to help them out.
27:50So, that's the kind of memory that I have of Dharam Ji.
27:53Wow.
27:54A wonderful person.
27:55A life.
27:56So beautiful that it can't be just described in your works.
28:00Taran, do you remember?
28:02Do you have an instance or an incident that you'd like to recall for us?
28:06So many.
28:07So many.
28:08So many.
28:09Give us one.
28:10One incident that comes to my mind is, he was shooting for a film called Tehelka and the
28:13media was, a few people from the media were invited to Dimashil Pradesh where he was shooting
28:18the film and it was snowing heavily.
28:20Now, we were all wearing our woolen and warm clothes.
28:24And there, in the snow, where he was shooting, he could spot me that I was shivering.
28:32So the moment the shot got over, he came up to me and he said,
28:35Does it look a lot?
28:36I said, yes.
28:37It looks a lot.
28:38So he said, he called his staff and he said,
28:41He gave his personal jacket for me to wear it at that moment.
28:47This is something that really touched me and it brings fears to my eyes today.
28:51I have written about this.
28:52I have spoken about this.
28:53But, you know, for an actor to do that, for any person to do that, in such freezing cold, left me speechless.
29:02Perhaps I did not really.
29:04Taranji, he wore his heart on his sleeve.
29:06And, you know, that is something that was so, you know, you could see it in his life.
29:12One final question before I let you go.
29:14Yeah.
29:15One film, one dialogue that one needs to remember Dharamji by?
29:20It could be very unfair to remember Dharamji by just one film.
29:23I would say, Mera Naam, Mera Gaon, Mera Desh, Pratigya, Chukke Chukke.
29:27Satyakaam, of course.
29:29Gudi, Shole, Baarud.
29:32I'm sorry, not Baarud.
29:34Charas.
29:35Then there was Azad.
29:38Then so many films.
29:41Dharamveer, which is my all-time favorite.
29:43Chacha Baticha.
29:44So many films come to my mind.
29:45Sita and Gita.
29:47The montage that he put up was so beautiful.
29:49It brought back so many memories for me of my childhood, of my growing up years.
29:53And meeting Dharamendra for the first time on the sets.
29:56I think it is something that I'll treasure all my life.
30:01You know, you're right, there is grief, there is mourning.
30:05But in midst of that, there also is celebration.
30:08Because we celebrate a life that was well lived, beautifully lived.
30:13And he leaves behind such a rich legacy.
30:15Very few have the privilege of enjoying a life that Dharamji did.
30:19Thank you, Tara Nadharji, for joining us.
30:22It's that time you take a step back and you look back where India's cinematic history is concerned
30:31and you marvel at the magnificent Dharamendra.
30:35It is that proverbial final curtain call for Dharamendra.
30:40At 89, Dharamendraji has passed, but he leaves behind a legacy so rich that decades will remember.
30:48Something that will burn the course of the annals of Indian cinematic history.
30:54And it's not just on screen, even off screen.
30:57Dharamendraji remains timeless.
30:59His charm, social media playoff, you know, the way he conducted himself on social media.
31:05Raw, radiant persona, charming to the core, warmth.
31:10Where he was a superstar in Mumbai, but the pin of Punjab was very much there in him.
31:16And when we speak about the charm, a charm that could leave the world stunned.
31:23From a doting grandfather, moments to heartfelt family glimpses.
31:27He bridged generations, capturing the attention of one and all.
31:31He's no longer with us.
31:33But these memories will endure, both in personal and in public life.
31:38And apart from the big screen, Dharamendra also won hearts on social media.
32:01Here's looking back at how the digital dairies of Dharamendra continue to inspire generations.
32:08You, and the realnesians.
32:13What and the bubbles while also holes in the air are so that everyone is being away from her.
32:17Jess and Shawna soon are over so far.
32:18Chia, a part of the world where all of us are ourselves and about the different parts of our land.
32:19I would follow a piece of my soul to ensure that the father is pushed away from us.
32:20What do you think of this and how your own soul is?
32:21It's been a pretty transparent.
32:22What you think of this?
32:23I'm a very transparent.
32:24What you think of this?
32:25What you think of this?
32:26I think of this, I think of this is something that I do.
32:28Almost all the time of this, I think of the work that I do.
32:31At the age of 89, the superstar was the inspiring grandpa of the internet, living
32:47a life with the innocence of a child and the grace of a poet.
32:51His world may have moved from film sets to farmlands, but his spirit still shone bright.
33:01Well, that was Dharmendra Ji's social media game, but that was aside from his larger-than-life
33:11persona that he leaves behind on the silver screen, something that's going to burn so
33:15very bright in decades to come.
33:18Moshmi Chatterjee, one of the co-stars of Dharmendra Ji, on the phone line with us right now.
33:23Moshmi Ji, thank you for taking the time out and joining us.
33:25As we mourn, there is grief, but there has to be joy of the legacy that he leaves behind,
33:31a celebration of a life so well lived, Moshmi Ji.
33:39Can you hear me, Moshmi Ji?
33:44Hello?
33:45Can you hear me, Moshmi Ji?
33:47Yes, yes.
33:49Moshmi Ji, what you remember about Dharmendra Ji?
33:54Moshmi Ji Ji, it was a story from him.
33:55Moshmi Ji Ji, it was a story from him.
33:56Yes, it is a story from him.
33:57Yes, it is a story from him.
33:58Yes, it is a story from him.
33:59Yes, but when I said Dharmendra Ji, I remember the song from Anupama, or the song from
34:05the world, the song from my heart, or the song from my heart.
34:10This song was to be heard of me.
34:12When you say it hurts, you know, when you say he left that legacy behind, he was always
34:25there and he will be there.
34:26and he will be there.
34:28And Sahaj and Saral
34:31has seen a lot of work in our life.
34:35And everyone who has worked with us
34:38has been a first of all,
34:40and then a human being
34:43who is with love and love.
34:45But Dharam Ji was a human being
34:47and then he was an actor.
34:50That's what I feel.
34:52And I will always feel this way only.
34:55And towards me,
34:57he was very affectionate,
34:59very protective.
35:00That because of my father-in-law,
35:02him and Kumar,
35:03he knew so well there,
35:05you know,
35:06in one time.
35:07I met him only with my father-in-law
35:10in the beginning.
35:12And then I did his own
35:14production pillar also, Gail.
35:17Then I did,
35:18I think last movie was Agi Ag
35:20or something like that.
35:22But he,
35:23I can't tell,
35:25I mean,
35:25it's not that industry lost
35:28or his family lost.
35:30It's the biggest loss
35:32for all of us.
35:33You know,
35:34and he was such a,
35:37his nature was so much,
35:39I think I can get connected
35:42because he was very childlike.
35:44He was so worried about his son,
35:57Shani Dhol.
35:59That time his picture
36:00was not going that well.
36:02So he wanted to curse me
36:04in his picture,
36:06that Gail.
36:07and I,
36:08in the beginning
36:09when they came
36:10and they approached me,
36:11I said,
36:12no.
36:13Then Dharamji was so confident.
36:14He came on his own,
36:16you know,
36:16and he just said,
36:18he told my husband,
36:20that Babu tell her
36:20to do this movie.
36:22I want her to be in my movie.
36:25And I did Gail.
36:26And I remember
36:28when he came
36:29and he sat with us
36:30and he was telling me,
36:32you know,
36:33you do.
36:34I never find Dharamji like that.
36:41He was always so sahaj.
36:44Right.
36:45Moshmiji,
36:46Moshmiji,
36:47thank you for joining us
36:49and taking the time out
36:50to recall your memories
36:52with Dharamji.
