00:00I'm Avery Thompson, Hollywood Life.
00:01Hi, Mr. Malkovich.
00:03Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me.
00:06My pleasure.
00:08You know, tell me a little bit about the partnership
00:10between Lucien and Christian Dior,
00:13and what does that look like over the course of this series?
00:18Well, Lucien Lelong was a gentleman
00:24who had his own fashion house.
00:27He wasn't in any way a kind of designer of note or anything,
00:33but he had a pretty fine eye and nose for talent,
00:38and among the people who worked at Lelong's studio
00:44were Christian Dior, Givenchy, Balmain, Balenciaga,
00:51Pierre Cardin, and on and on and on.
00:55So he had a very good eye for talent,
00:57and I think Dior, who was very, very gifted,
01:04flourished under Lelong's guidance, I guess you would say.
01:13I think Dior was someone very, very talented,
01:21hyper-sensitive,
01:24difficult probably most especially at that time,
01:30because that was a time where homosexuals couldn't live openly,
01:36where it wasn't accepted by society, unfortunately,
01:42and that was a real torture for many people
01:51who couldn't live honestly and live openly,
01:56at least as openly as any person can live,
02:01which may not be so much,
02:03but, or so honestly,
02:06but I think they were a good duo in that way,
02:12because I think Lelong was able to manage Dior's sensitivities,
02:22and helped him make beautiful work,
02:28kept him employed during the war.
02:34Actually, Dior was in the military,
02:38but kept him employed during the occupation
02:42and was someone who had a great role to play
02:50in keeping the French fashion business in France
02:56rather than having it transferred to Berlin,
02:59which was one dream and goal of the Nazis.
03:06So I think they were a pretty good pairing, I'd say.
03:10A duo.
03:12You know, over the course of this project,
03:15has this experience sort of made you look at fashion
03:18or the artistry of it differently now?
03:20No.
03:21No, I always had great respect for the work of fashion.
03:26I did 24, 26 collections myself under different lines,
03:33and it's a lot of work.
03:37Yeah.
03:37And it's a very beautiful work.
03:41The creative part of it, very compelling, very interesting,
03:49because not unlike cinema or theater
03:54or some other forms I work in,
03:57it's only about details.
03:59And that's something that always compels and intrigues me.
04:11Why this and not that?
04:15And so I always had great respect for designers,
04:21and it was something I was always interested in.
04:25Well, thank you so much for your time,
04:29and congrats on the show.
04:30It's absolutely stunning.
04:31Oh, thank you.
04:32Thank you so much.
