00:00plus and contain scenes of violence and mature subject matter viewer discretion is advised
00:08our call started around 8 30 a.m and then just as she says he just left
00:13somebody walks back into the house and she starts yelling get the out of my house
00:18get the out of my house and the phone just dropped
00:23forensic pathologists mentioned that she had been hit with dumbbell at least twice
00:38there was noticeable tread from what appeared to be a timberland boot on the floor that was left
00:43inside the pool of blood we need to identify who this person is is this a person that harmed marie
00:49and ultimately killed marie one of the heartbreaking things was that those two young children would
00:55have been there whenever their mother was being murdered
01:02good evening and welcome to crime beat i'm anthony robart when ottawa police respond to a call at a
01:08townhouse in the city's south end what they discover reveals a scene of unimaginable brutality the victim
01:1524 year old marie gabriel a young mother of two but who would want her dead as investigators would
01:23soon learn marie didn't spend her final moments with just her killer here now is final call the murder
01:33of marie gabriel hi there it's 911 do you need the police to fire the paramedic yes i just uh bring my
01:42kid here for the mom on monday march 28 2022 the ottawa police received a 911 call i look everywhere everywhere
01:53and then when i look downstairs i saw she's laying down downstairs and then there's blood over the floor
01:59i want you to go down there right now and try to wake her up the caller was mr jean fenelon who reported
02:05that he attended his partner's residence marie gabrielle with his two kids that he was to drop off
02:14and upon entering the house he could not find his partner
02:17her baby baby she's not moving she's not moving is she breathing no there's nothing at all and she's
02:26not breathing she's not breathing okay okay so real quick here with my help would you like to start cpr
02:35yeah i can try that i'm with my two kids so they keep coming down and i don't want them to see so
02:40okay i understand but we really need to try right now because every second counts okay
02:45there's actually blood everywhere now there's blood where is the blood coming from from her head
02:52and then there's black black black blood on the car i understand this is difficult but you really need
02:56to push as hard and as fast as you can yeah i'm doing that okay she's not moving she's not moving i
03:03understand is there any response from her at all no nothing at all nothing okay it's just like somebody
03:09she's making her head i arrive at the scene uniform officers are already at the scene paramedics
03:19are also now on on scene nothing stood out at that location that neighborhood i'm familiar with
03:25they direct us to the unit in question where the victim marie was located marie gabrielle was found
03:32barefoot so there was a lot of her footprints within the scene and some drag marks and those footprints
04:01led to the stairwells and they stop at the stairwells and the drag marks leads further in the basement
04:13towards her last resting place it was obvious by the footprints and the drag marks that marie gabrielle
04:21tried to get away from her attacker we were aware that the 911 caller was present and part of our role is
04:27to interview that person to get as much information as we can about what transpired i speak to jean
04:34identify myself as an investigator i asked him a few simple questions his name and a little bit of
04:40background information he was sitting in his car on the roadway a short distance from the house
04:46and he had two small children in the car with him we make some arrangements to have the children picked up
04:52by a family member and jean agrees to attend the police station to be interviewed
05:00coffee's good yes
05:07so before we get started so you know it's being recorded yeah okay so i come into the interview room
05:14unfortunately i did tell you i sadly had to tell you at the scene
05:19um that it is that she passed away so this is a homicide investigation okay this is still early
05:29well mid-morning at this point you last saw her on sunday saturday saturday he tells us
05:36he doesn't have any communication with marie over the course of the weekend
05:40and then returns monday morning to drop off the children he explained he arrives
05:44uh at the house the front door is unlocked he enters the house he's yelling out her name
05:50so when i knock knock knock knock there was nothing no response so i touched the door
05:58the door just opened so i went upstairs i was like mary mary mary nothing i checked the washroom nothing
06:08there's no response and then ultimately he goes down to the basement of the house and finds marie
06:13on the floor so i went downstairs she was just laying down there there was blood all over the floor
06:21and my thing my lifted weights was like next to her one of the number one thoughts that's going
06:27through my head is who is marie gabriel who is the victim why would someone want to hurt her why would
06:36someone want to kill her how did i find out that she was dead i was at work packing up to go home and
06:44as i'm driving i get a call from her best friend i called her brother david and i had to break the
06:54news to him that marie was found dead and she's crying then i believe my mom called me and said that
07:03the detectives earned their way to the house and i should get home quickly on monday night in march 2022
07:109 25 p.m my phone rang and i just looked at my phone and it was my son mimi's brother i knew there
07:19was something wrong in the tone of his voice your daughter is dead
07:24when he said these things to me everything was churning over and over and over last conversation
07:34with me when did i last speak to how did this happen the detectives did not disclose any details because
07:38it was still an investigation i found jean bernello like he's the father of the kids the mother is gone
07:46and he starts crying and he's telling me the story basically what happened i said to him okay like
07:52what do you mean she was laying in a pile of blood and he says well it looked like somebody like
07:58dated somebody beat her at the start of the investigation we had no suspects
08:16welcome back to crime beat the murder of ottawa's marie gabrielle was reported by her on again off
08:22again partner jean berneau fenelon jean told police he had come home to a horrifying scene marie
08:30beaten to death in their basement now detectives were left with one critical question who would want
08:36the mother of two young children dead
08:39we now return to final call the murder of marie gabriel
08:48it's just my younger sister we were close we grew up together
08:53i call her marie or nini and my father calls her mimi
08:59as a young child she was always wanting to be outside the house and playing playing in the sand playing in
09:06the dirt we grew up together in gambia and we came to canada ottawa in 2007 and her mum
09:14her mum had pet somebody else i eventually moved back to the uk so that eventually for them to get
09:21in touch with me it was like having children all over again even though they were many adults
09:28we were in middle school when we met she was very lively she loved to laugh she loved to pull pranks
09:39marie was very kind she just the most beautiful smile she was funny
09:45and then uh once i moved to fredicton our friendship became slightly distant but then we'd find our way
09:55back to each other and just pick up like nothing ever happened yeah she just became a rock to lean on
10:02and i became a rock for her to lean on too yeah
10:06and just the thought of using a 30 pound dumbbell that's obviously quite a heavy object
10:36that takes quite a bit of force to swing obviously we do see some blunt force trauma related injuries
10:42and homicides but the 30 pound dumbbell that was not something i had ever seen used before
10:48the impact was so forceful that it caused two hinge fractures at the base of her skull
10:54normally you see those kinds of injuries during a motor vehicle collision or a fall from a great height
11:04marie gabrielle was also hit several times with the stick that we found she was hit on her chest on
11:10her back on her hands on her legs on her forearms that's the indentation that's a piece of wood yeah
11:18that's her that's her right hand the marks on their forearms were described by the forensic pathologist
11:26as defensive wound there's the indentation the exact like measurement of the the side of that stick yeah
11:33there was also something very important too within the crime scene we found a boot print
11:40there was noticeable tread from what appeared to be a timberland boot on the floor that was left
11:45inside the pool of blood and with the amount of blood that was found at the scene of the crime it was
11:50also likely that there would have been some bloody clothing that belonged to the accused
11:54of the abuse once you look at the whole scene the bloody footprints the drag marks piece of wood
12:02the dumbbell that was used to kill their 30 pound dumbbell in my opinion this crime was a personal
12:11was very personal
12:11you said she had a friend over on friday or saturday has not provided some information about other
12:20how he described marie being with other males and that it possibly may be one of those people that
12:28came in and killed marie gabriel she did mention one time that she was seeing a guy and the guy was
12:33good to her later on because i started like doing research about the guy and i found some of his like
12:40social media pages and i saw that he was a boxer and i'm like okay so and this could be him because
12:48he's a boxer he's he likes to fight and he could have lost his temper and like took a hold of her and
12:54beat her to death through looking at their social media history it was clear that there appeared to be
13:05a new man in the victim's life and then it was my duty to look into the nature of that particular
13:11relationship maybe she was or had returned with jean fanlon and had resumed a relationship with him
13:20because of the children they wanted to be a family and the jealous boyfriend or jealous ex-boyfriend
13:26might have been involved in killing her that was another theory that was possible and he goes on to
13:34to provide a theory that oh maybe she invited someone over and that person hit her over the
13:40head or maybe someone came in and hit over the head jean did bring up a theory that marie gabriel was
13:48involved in in sex trade presenting the victim as a high-risk sex worker it potentially could lead us
13:57down any number of rabbit holes it could be any number of unknown persons these are all investigative
14:02avenues that need to be pursued now that this information has been provided to us
14:09when the officers arrived at the scene it was obvious that marie gabriel had not just died like
14:16the pool of blood around her head was darker the blood was darker and it was dried up she was killed a few
14:24days ago it had actually very likely happened a couple days before in looking at marie gabriel's cell
14:31phone billing records it was clear that there were no more outgoing communications after about 11 50
14:38a.m on march 26th so that suggests to me that that she's no longer using the phone either she is
14:46deceased at this point or the phone has been taken from her i have all those kids here i thought it was
14:51going to help me to put them to sleep you know he's like well i'm going out rafalon describes the weekend
14:58prior to marie's death as he had spent some time with marie they were together during the evening they
15:04had the children with them and then he describes the vehicle picking marie up we need to identify who
15:11this person is is this a person that is a friend with marie is this a person that harmed marie and ultimately
15:18killed marie she came back in the morning she came back to me upstairs talks about marie returning home
15:27and then that marie called her friend she went back downstairs she was on her phone the whole time
15:33this is a new person that we need to follow up with this is someone that's going to also help
15:37us with the timeline the little girl of my brother this is now a new witness staying on my chest i was
15:42like feeling here giving her milk you know
15:58welcome back jean-brunot fenelon called 9-1-1 on the morning of monday march 28 2022
16:05after his on again off again partner marie gabriel was found bludgeoned to death in her home with
16:11multiple theories circulating around who would have wanted marie dead police now believe she
16:17may have been killed days earlier we now return to final call the murder of marie gabriel
16:28she keep telling me to leave my girl now she keep telling me to leave it's unclear when exactly but
16:34ja indicates that he leaves with the children for the weekend with the promise that he's going to return
16:40the children to marie on monday morning so i took them and then she's like you know what just uh
16:47bring them back on monday which is today so he's now given me a timeline saying he last spoke to marie
16:56early morning on saturday so i didn't stay uh during that in the full interview but at one point i came back
17:04back and that's when the information uh came in during the interview about marie gabriel's friend norland
17:12tassie she was talking to that norland girl okay so the norland girl is more like uh best friend best friend
17:20so i followed up on this by calling uh norland tassie that morning the day i got the call
17:27from the detective it was a monday morning the 28th of march and he's like hi i'm with the homicide
17:37department um i'm calling guarding murray and the whole world stopped around me i broke down
17:46she informed me that on the friday before so march 26 2022 marie gabriel had left with another man she
17:57had gone out the previous night the friday night with her boyfriend jean israel when we first uh approach
18:05him um he was unaware of marie gabriel's death when we informed him that marie had passed he became
18:14extremely emotional visibly upset analyzing jean israelon's phone uh revealed that he was nowhere near
18:22the scene of the homicide at the time it occurred we collect video security uh footage that clearly
18:30places that mail at those locations during those times making it almost impossible that he had any
18:37involvement in the death of marie gabriel the saturday morning we were on the phone on and off
18:43and she had told me then that she would come was completely done with her relationship with jean
18:51she wanted to break things off with him and everything so that morning when we called each
18:56other that's exactly what she was doing she was breaking things off with him she was calling him to
19:00get out of the house to pack his things and leave and um he was just arguing back and forth with her that
19:07he wasn't leaving that he didn't want to leave our calls i believe started around like
19:138 30 a.m 9 9 a.m that morning that saturday morning and our last call was around 12 and she goes
19:23he just left and i go okay and then just as she says he just left somebody walks back into the house
19:31and she starts yelling get the out of my house get the out of my house so i was just like okay
19:36she's standing her ground and the phone just dropped but the call was still going on but i
19:44just couldn't hear anything so i just thought she might have muted me so i just stayed on the phone
19:48i waited for her to come back on um so i stayed on the phone for about seven minutes and i just said
19:56hey if you can hear me call me back um and i hung up and then yeah i never heard back from her we were
20:06also missing uh during uh this investigation marie gabrielle's phone which is another piece of
20:13information we really wanted to find instead of searching your phone now we're going to get a
20:19search warrant to do it okay just because it's a criminal investigation we're also going to seize
20:24your vehicle and i'm not saying that you're involved we just have to cover all bases okay
20:31mr fenelon's vehicle was seized and no evidence linking to the crime was found in the car
20:40so we didn't find any blood basically in the car the purpose of seasoned jean fenelon's phone
20:46is to extract data to either corroborate what he's telling us in his interview
20:53and to see if he's actually truthful because he speaks about sending text messages phone calls with
21:01marie gabriel being at certain locations we wanted to confirm that
21:06one of the first things i did whenever i received this data was i went straight to the location
21:12information that was found on the phone basically what this allowed me to do was see where his phone
21:18was and at what time and i have a look at the cell phone towers that the cell phone is actually using
21:24so some inconsistencies from mr fenelon's police interview
21:29uh in the sequence of events mr fenelon said in his original statement that once he left he went
21:38straight to his mother's place and he stayed there the whole day while gps data location on his phone
21:45shows that from the adorington address he went to his mother's address but 20 minutes later he went to
21:53petrie island in orleans and he stayed there for almost 15 minutes once the phone arrived at petrie island
22:01it appeared to stop in the area of the parking lot and it remained stationary in the parking lot
22:07where the user went in that amount of time i don't know for sure
22:14so on the 30th of march our search team was given a task with a very narrow search just to check
22:22the area where the gps data locations are on the map we're trying to find clothing and a cell phone
22:30so we're here at petrie island and the search unit had come here searched the parking lot area
22:38down in this bush area as well and down these footpaths and they searched all the way down
22:47to the entrance of petrie island ultimately we're looking for in the main piece of evidence was her
22:54cell phone but unfortunately at the time they weren't able to find anything the phone then leaves the
23:01area of petrie island and begins traveling west it then travels south down highway 417 and then exits
23:08again and eventually it arrives back at the scene of the crime
23:11it then remains there for about 54 minutes before it begins moving again
23:18one of the witnesses that we spoke to was another residence of the same housing complex she had
23:24observed jean fenelon coming and going in the afternoon and this was one of the first pieces of
23:29evidence that we actually received that began to contradict the story that jean fenelon was giving us
23:36so that was the first moment where i was thinking it's it's possible that he's not telling us the
23:42truth at this point we were able to obtain some surveillance video located at opposite ends of the
23:50street that led up to the residence soon after the homicide was reported we did also speak to the
23:56mother of jean fenelon another slight red flag she said he had arrived in the early afternoon which would
24:04have actually been about a few hours after whenever he said he had arrived and another interesting
24:10thing that revealed itself in doing so was that i realized while he was going to petrie island while
24:16he was returning to the scene while he was going back to orleans throughout that time period he was still
24:23texting with marie gabrielle the part that stood out our parts i should say that stood out the most about
24:29that interview is jean fenelon's criticism towards marie gabrielle i would like call her like they
24:36they you know because you know like if a woman you want to be respected so why are you cheating why
24:42doing all those kind of things you know in the moment i'm listening to jean describe marie gabrielle
24:50and i'm thinking to myself there is no love there there's no compassion there he doesn't care about
24:57marie one bit he called her names he said she was cheating on him he didn't show any emotions but
25:04that doesn't give us grounds to believe that he killed her because she was with him and he didn't
25:13want her to hang out with me and he'll make a fuss about that so she became very distant towards me
25:19sometimes i'd be having two or three months conversations with mimi and then suddenly
25:28mimi was gone i challenged my daughter over why are you often changing your phone number why are you
25:36often disappearing for months at a time and she confided that bernal was quite hands-on with her and
25:45he would lose his temper smash her phones up like pushing me and all that even like
25:54choke me by the neck like uh all those kind of thing okay but i always keep it cool i never fight her
26:03he talks about uh the past arguments physical arguments they've had maybe from both parties at
26:09this point i don't know there was something there that wasn't added up like
26:12it was like either they're living together and they're they're jointly involved in raising the
26:17children or they're separated and they have some sort of separation agreement and child custody
26:23agreement and he described the situations as being merged which didn't make sense to me
26:28we facetimed every single day
26:43i want the baby
26:47hi asher oh okay i'm sorry okay oh i'm sorry asher yeah
26:52these are the text messages from the friday night so friday the 25th
27:03at 11 30. i text marie and i say where are you bernal is freaking out and marie responds bernal
27:13bernal said he wants to cut my legs off
27:18she then proceeded to text me saturday morning at 4 49 a.m she said hey sis i'm home
27:26i can't do it anymore and i'm literally here crying while texting you i don't want anyone of them
27:33i'll stay by myself and raise my children and just do me
27:36later that morning on march 26th marie is again texting jean israelon about jean fenelon and how
27:46he's refusing to leave the residence the text messages she sends at 10 24 a.m read i need help
27:53this guy don't want to leave the house this guy wants to fight me he wanted to put his hands on me
27:59he's fighting me right now i should have been like hey maybe i should call the cops to go check
28:05in on her i heard a faint voice and i could recognize that it was his but i didn't hear what
28:11he said i didn't hear a threat or anything she tried to reach her the following days by
28:20calls and text message messages with negative results i do believe that the homicide would have
28:26taken place probably very close in time to when that phone call with norland was cut off and she
28:34wasn't able to reach her again based on the fact that mr fenelon had failed to provide us with the
28:42information that he went to petrie island and he also failed to tell us that he returned to the scene
28:47which to me are two big mistakes he made compiling all this information i was satisfied that we had
28:54enough grounds to arrest mr fenelon for murder so he came in on his own on the alert that would return
29:05his car then we arrested him until i arrest someone i don't have a motive right i don't know a motive
29:11well sir hello how are you i'm very good thanks nice to meet you this is march 30th 2022 this is my
29:21first time meeting mr fenelon he had been arrested a few hours before i want to establish cooperation
29:28what did i do yeah what did i do that's a good question exactly yeah so i'm here like i'm here
29:35because i called the police like oh i found my girlfriend laying on the ground dead you find that
29:39to be unfair it is really unfair i've decided to do what's called a reenactment tell me exactly the
29:46word she used she's like get out of my house okay get out of my house this is why she said she pushed
29:53me push me get out get out of my house so i get out i went inside the car again i was just sitting there
30:00and then she kept dropping bags one by one one by one outside so what i'm trying to do is basically
30:06let's bring him back to the actual scene let's bring him back to that actual day like this okay so
30:13kind of show me how she was doing it okay and then i was like fine and then i left she had the
30:29phone the whole time she just pushed me with one hand but she was pushing you with one hand yes okay
30:33so in this particular stage of the statement that mr fenlon is providing me he's confirming that mary
30:42had a phone in her hand she was on the phone which this corroborates the actual statement from norland
30:49there's a gap in the timeline and on the 26th the 11 30 ish mark between 11 30 and noon is a critical
31:00time this is the end of cell phone activity of miss gabrielle so on this day did you ever come back
31:07back no i was but i didn't come back okay i didn't get inside the place so because initially you said
31:16you stayed at your mom the entire day and you were there all day okay um now sometimes you know people
31:25think about things after the fact okay um do you remember returning here on the saturday
31:36i i don't think i did oh yeah i left with two kids i liquid with two kids and then i came back for
31:45my two other kids the first was my brother kids yeah and then after that was my two kids
31:52we didn't like there was no agreement like saying bad things to each other no so the original
31:59timeline provided by him he leaves at the 11 30 ish mark and then he never returns up until the
32:06monday morning when he discovers her body this is a major blow to the actual timeline he brings us
32:14back to the actual house about an hour ish after when you originally left when there is that altercation
32:21based on the evidence that we've gathered here so far all right we know who killed and caused the
32:28death of mary okay and that was you that was me that was you
32:33i didn't kill him who did i don't know
32:43you think it's me but i have no idea this is where he needed to know that there was absolutely no doubt
32:51in the mind of the investigators especially detective guy that he was the one responsible
32:56for the murder of mary gabrielle so this is the tracker that was connected to you okay pertaining to
33:05your your phone so everywhere we go with our phone it leaves a trace you leave your mom's place
33:12and you go to petri island i didn't go exactly into petri island i passed by petri island he wants to
33:20distance himself very much from petri island and what brought you there going from your mom to there
33:28well maybe uh to clear up night or what evidence are they going to find in that vicinity even in the
33:38water there's no knife there's nothing well i'm not talking about knives or any item
33:44whatsoever that will be connected either you or mary i don't think there's anything
33:57like a cell phone i completely don't know about it what i found here he was non-confident about
34:04petri island he was denying at first now he's back at petri island petri island was a red flag to us
34:13we need to resend a search team at petri island
34:29welcome back marie gabrielle was beaten to death in her basement her body left for two days before being
34:36discovered by the very man now arrested and charged in her murder the children's father jean
34:42berneau fenelon with jean denying any involvement police make the decision to return to petri island
34:48where they believe he may have discarded key evidence
34:54here now is the conclusion of final call the murder of marie gabriel
35:03that morning we decided to come to petri island after detectives again decided to
35:08expand the search we searched the parking lot a little bit eventually we decided let's go have a
35:14look at the shoreline because the search unit hadn't searched this area and it'd be a great area to get
35:21rid of evidence you know throwing anything in the water on march 31st this was covered in snow
35:29and the water was frozen and that's where we saw the boot the timberland boot just at the frozen edge
35:38was the boot standing right there and then when we continued to look around we saw some clothing
35:44just at the beginning of the ice shelf close to the edge of the water there was gray like a hoodie
35:52sweatshirt and some black pants as well during that time another investigator located the other boot
36:01on the beach just a little bit further down ultimately we couldn't find her cell phone
36:09a few days later the ice would have melted and would have lost all of this evidence
36:14and eventually we sent both boots and the clothing to the center of forensic science to be analyzed for
36:20dna marie gabriel's blood was found on all four items
36:29the inside back collar of the shirt was a swab and it returned to be mr fenelon's dna
36:37as for the boots the boots were covered with blood spatter when it returned to mr fenelon's dna
36:49fenelon's trial occurred in the fall of 2024 it lasted seven weeks i did testify at the trial one of
37:00the tricky things in files like this is that the suspect resides at this address you expect to find his
37:06dna in this case the location information was so important that i knew i had to go up there and do
37:13a good job to ensure that justice was going to be served in this case it was daunting and every
37:20opportunity he had insulted me he made gestures towards me and even when i gave a tiny little bit of
37:30evidence he laughed at me shockingly i heard that she was weakened from his previous beating with the wood
37:43she was on the floor defenseless and he towed her above her with that dumbbell
37:49it has yet been a word invented for how i feel to this day for that
37:54i go to work at 10. jean fenelon portrayed himself as a good person i'm done at five
38:005 15 and i'm there you know that's how serious honest i was with him you know he said he was a
38:05security guard that he was a good father that he wanted to live with marie gabriel as a family unit
38:11he was relaying to me that he was a victim of mary gabriel being unfaithful towards him
38:18based on mr fenelon saying that he believed that marie gabriel was involved in the sex trade industry
38:25and it could be anyone that killed her there was no uh information in our database involving uh
38:34marie gabriel in any sex trade work in my mind listening to him described marie that way he was
38:43trying to justify in a sense her death she deserved to die i believe the motive for mr fenelon to
38:53brutally kill marie gabriel was jealousy and control we're going to switch gears here and talk about
39:00the reports over in gatineau when we were reviewing this case at the beginning we learned that there were
39:05three incidents in gatineau quebec those who may not know ottawa and gatineau are just separated by a
39:12couple bridges in the river they lived together in gatineau before they had been living together
39:18since 2017. we understand that she had called the gatineau police indicating harassment potentially
39:24even threats that may have happened she called uh the police said uh i'm like harassing her i'm not
39:32harassing her because i'm calling for my kid i want to know if they okay or not because in november she
39:36reached out to social services and she moved from gatineau to a shelter a hotel in downtown ottawa
39:46and the next day he called the gatineau police to report that she left with his children and he's
39:54concerned for the safety of his children as a result the gatineau police officer reached out to marie
39:59gabrielle by phone she said no i left with the kids because he threatened to cut my throat and he says
40:07he has a million ways to kill me the officer asked her if she could attend the police station in gatineau to
40:15file the report and marie gabriel never went to police to file a formal complaint i remember getting a text
40:23message from me telling me that it may be her last text just in case something happens to me or my kids
40:32just know that i tried last night i took the kids and left their father's home as i was fearing for my
40:39life and theirs as they started saying things that make someone fear for their life
40:45i'm at a safe place now right now just letting you or anyone know she'd already indicated that wherever
40:55she goes he was tracking her down finding her where she was after a month in the shelter social services
41:03found her a place at 1485 ederington where she moved as a result of moving there she reached out
41:10to the ottawa police and she explained the situation to the police officer and she told the officer that
41:17i don't want to prevent mr fenelon to see our children but i want him to stop communication so the
41:23officer uh contacted minister fenelon he told him to stop calling her stop threatening her and warned him
41:31about criminal harassment i absolutely think that more could have been done i remember sitting in court
41:38and hearing like police officers have been there a couple of times and i'm like why didn't they like
41:43follow up why did they go through and check again it's actually mandatory in the province of ontario
41:49to arrest whether the victim wants a charge or not if there's an evidence of the offense there was no
41:54additional reports of any violence until we got a call about this incident without physical evidence
42:00that indicates that there was some level of violence or a crime that's been committed you're left
42:04with uh with leaving the couple together once marie gabrielle moved to the ederington address her
42:12daughter became sick so based on this marie gabrielle allowed mr fenelon to move with her at the
42:20ederington address in january 2022 what stands out about this case is how much mary was threatened how
42:28she was fearful mr fenelon was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison
42:40so it's definitely a relief whenever the verdict was handed down and it was what i very much believed
42:46to have been right her smile her smile do i miss her smile her laugh her voice
43:03there's many things to miss about marie
43:10when i see the photos it's crazy because it's almost like
43:14like she's looking at you and i'm looking back at her so it's kind of like you want to have a
43:20conversation with her i have um tattoo on my wrist it's a purple ribbon which symbolizes survivors of
43:35domestic violence you'll note i have it ripped torn broken
43:39women because mimi wasn't a survivor of domestic violence she's a victim of domestic violence
43:50there's other women out there and men suffering like my daughter suffered putting up with it
43:58it everybody said she got justice
44:16yeah 25 years ain't enough nowhere near enough
44:19but it's what your laws call justice and i'll accept that
44:31on her behalf
44:35to this day jean fenelon continues to deny that he had anything to do with marie's murder and that he
44:42ever threatened her he has filed an appeal in 2024 allison uraskovich was named outstanding crime
44:51analyst of the year for her work on the marie gabriel case
