Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said “the best way for people to come out of poverty is through work,” arguing that employment growth and welfare reform are key to improving living standards. He highlighted that the previous Conservative government created four million jobs after 2010 and said controlling welfare spending would allow taxes to be cut, the economy to grow and more higher-paid jobs to be created.

00:00The best way for people to come out of poverty is through work and we
00:04demonstrated when we were in government when we did see falls in the number of
00:07people in absolute poverty after housing costs including children that
00:13does work and we actually had four million more jobs as a result of the
00:18last Conservative government than when we came into office in 2010 so that is
00:23the way to do it and part of that story of course is getting the welfare budget
00:27under control so you can cut taxes grow the economy and generate those higher
00:32paying jobs that allow people to come out of poverty or not be in poverty in the
00:36first place
