Transcript
00:00A show that truly is where art meets activism for me, which is a big deal for me.
00:06Post-R and Emmy nominee Billy Porter is taking his activism to the Senate,
00:10urging them to pass a relief package for those who work in the arts.
00:13Porter appeared virtually on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday night,
00:16discussing the nomination for his performance in Pose,
00:19as well as his grassroots campaign, Be an Arts Hero.
00:22With the Emmy ceremony moving forward virtually this year,
00:24Meyers said that he will miss Porter's fashion statement on the red carpet,
00:27though the actor hinted he may still have something in mind.
00:30As Pose halted production due to COVID-19,
00:33Porter shared that he has continued with his various writing and producing projects.
00:37I am, as I say, very often trying to be the head bitch in charge.
00:41The actor went on to say that he is trying to be the change he wants to see,
00:45enlarge his territory and greenlight his own projects while giving a voice to the voiceless.
00:49His volunteer-run campaign, Be an Arts Hero,
00:52is currently pushing the Senate to allocate a relief package to arts workers
00:55who have lost income due to the pandemic.
00:57There's so much funding that is necessary in this crisis in particular.
01:03Porter explained how the Broadway arts community are working-class people who live hand-to-mouth,
01:07as he did for 30 years, and two to five paychecks away from poverty.
01:11This moment has illuminated that in really stark ways.
01:19Porter is calling on the senators to explore how to make sure this relief package is put through
01:23as soon as possible.
