00:00:00It may be a cold wintery night in Paisley but Martin O'Neill and the boys will be hoping to
00:00:17heat up on the pitch with some scintillating football action tonight. It is an 8pm kickoff
00:00:24local time it is St Mirren against Celtic in the SPFL Premiership and it's a massive game as we get
00:00:30back to domestic action. The celebrations of the national team for Scotland and of course as far
00:00:38as the Celtic team is concerned Ireland as well all those celebrations put to the back of their minds
00:00:44it's all about the three points tonight at St Mirren Park with hearts not playing until tomorrow this is
00:00:50an opportunity effectively this is Celtic's game in hand and a chance to cut the gap at the top to
00:00:55just four points with teams like Hibbs and Rangers breathing down Celtic's back Celtic would love
00:01:01all three points tonight and a good performance to send the supporters home happy and hopefully for

00:01:18is in goal a back four of Anthony Ralston, Austin trusty Liam Scales and Scotland World Cup qualifying
00:01:25hero Kieran Tierney, a midfielder of Callum McGregor, Arne Engels, Rayo Hattati, Dyson Maeda and
00:01:32Sebastian Tenetke on the wings and Irish playoff World Cup hero Johnny Kenny through the middle. What do
00:01:39you think of that Simon? Yeah listen Gerry it looks a reasonably strong team from what we have at our
00:01:45disposal at the moment obviously there's some well documented injuries to the squad. Plenty of them.
00:01:50Yeah there is indeed but yeah the team on paper looks a decent 11 to start this game or under no
00:01:57illusion it's going to be a tough evening I would suggest throughout St Myrne and it's an important
00:02:03evening you know after that international break back to domestic duty and the games are going to be
00:02:08coming thick and fast obviously with the lead up to the league cup final with these two teams but the focus
00:02:14is on tonight and three points. It is indeed let's hear from Celtic's interim manager Martin O'Neill a
00:02:20short time ago trackside he spoke to our reporter Matthew Campbell. Martin a return to domestic action
00:02:27and a tough away game to get started on this busy run of fixtures how are you feeling ahead of this one?
00:02:32Yeah it is tough it's a tough game I saw St Myrne a couple of weeks ago against against Hibs and although
00:02:39they lost 3-0 in the match that game could have gone either way so difficult task for us we know what
00:02:45we're up against it'll be it'll be cut and thrust and we have to be up for the task. Absolutely well you
00:02:50mentioned you know that task and challenge that that lies ahead we know that they've got quality
00:02:55St Myrne of course but naturally so so do we as well is this just about how we approach this
00:02:59this game tonight? Well I suppose every manager will think about his own team and think and in
00:03:04exactly those terms yeah this is really important for us you know we have to we have to be physically
00:03:09as strong as possible we have to we have to match that physicality that St Myrne will show and we've got
00:03:15to try and we've got to try and impose ourselves in the game and and that's important if you don't do
00:03:20these things then you'll lose the match. We like we say you know we come into this game after the
00:03:24international break our final game before that break was a really convincing win at Celtic Park
00:03:30I suppose you know it's sort of you can't say carrying on that momentum but how important is
00:03:34it to sort of build that momentum from the get-go here? Yeah I mean there was a break and and and that
00:03:39does stop momentum and must admit so you have to restart it again now this is really important for us
00:03:43tonight you know it's an eight o'clock kickoff on the Saturday night really important for players to
00:03:48get tuned in mentally and physically to this game so in terms of momentum you have to really start
00:03:53again get a national break which was fantastic for Scotland really it's up to us now to to readjust
00:03:59and get our minds in this game. And finally Martin you know let me mention you've got a lot of games
00:04:04coming up busy busy old schedule um over the next few weeks how big a part did you know the bench the
00:04:09players the substitutes play in a night like this? Of course absolutely and the more so now than ever before if
00:04:15you're thinking now the number of substitutes that you can use in the game then you try and use them
00:04:19as wisely as possible but um sometimes substitutes come on and have no impact at all because maybe
00:04:25the games maybe the game has just disappeared in front of them but at the end of the day you're hoping
00:04:30that that you're absolutely spot on substitutes here hopefully can play a big big part tonight.

00:05:58he gets a little bit of the ball and then he'll be awareness to pick out plays from Celtic Chapel,
00:06:02which walks his way in there, tries to get it, out-stretch Hattatius,
00:06:06over Thieves it, throws it in to Johnny, carry it for another goal.
00:06:17Scales leaves it for Tierney, Tierney, right to the box, takes the shot, oh what a goal from Keelan Tierney!
00:06:25His first goal since returning to Celtic, more drilled into the bar post, nothing that Eddie
00:06:33Beach could do about it, and Celtic leads by two goals to the holes.
00:06:38Yeah and the celebration says everything there, it was really a nice celebration,
00:06:43delighted to get off the map.
00:06:47Angles, pass it forward, looking for Maeda, it's a wonderful ball, Maeda, oh what a goal!

00:08:50so celtic convincing winners the last time they played in the spfl we could um do with some of
00:08:56that tonight but this will be a tough one away to st mirin celtic have played st mirin once this
00:09:01season already and it was a late look mccown goal at celtic park back in the the third of august and
00:09:08first day of the season it gave celtic the win that night um simon traditionally st mirin are
00:09:14one of the top teams they always you would say over perform they tend to be a a pretty much um
00:09:20a good bet for top six they've not started the season as well this year stephen robinson so you
00:09:25only get two wins um from their 11 games four draws and and five defeats are they not the
00:09:32the force they once were if you want to put it that way well they've got through to the league
00:09:37cup final which is a huge achievement for the likes of st mirin i've watched them obviously in that first
00:09:44game of the season that you speak about there where it took a late look mccown goal to get the three
00:09:49points over the over the mark but i think they're a big physical team uh that's not to say that they
00:09:56can't play their forwards like to cause a bit of havoc as well i just think it's always you have to be
00:10:02on it uh coming to st mirin and in fairness to celtic in the last few games over the last few years that
00:10:08we've covered they've got results at st mirin but i think you have to be on it from the start you have to
00:10:13match the physicality there as well yeah and then hopefully our football because i think we have
00:10:17obviously the better players where football comes to the floor when you get guys like
00:10:23you know no disrespect to austin trusty and liam scales because they're you know strong defenders
00:10:28in their own right but cameron carter vickers really strong defender when he's out you sense
00:10:33that the opposition think that if they've got physicality against celtic then somehow that can
00:10:38be something certainly in set pieces that they can take advantage of is that what celtic is going
00:10:42to have to be wary of tonight i think so yeah i think that's one of the the forms of attack that
00:10:47st mirin will look at with that kind of presence uh listen carter vickers has been huge for celtic
00:10:54in his time here at the club a rock at the back having said that scales and trusty have done well
00:10:59in recent times and they're in there tonight that's the center back pairing they need to stand up and do
00:11:05their job yeah absolutely liam scales will be on a high as well from um a really pivotal uh part that
00:11:12he played in the republic of ireland's um last two games in in the qualifier and assist against portugal
00:11:18and that late late assist for troy parrott's third goal um against hungary if you thought you had ever
00:11:24seen anything like that at the end of a football match you just had to wait a few days to see tuesday
00:11:28to see an even more dramatic end to an international football match um however back to domestic action it is
00:11:35um tonight this is one of these games simon that it's it's the cliche isn't it but can they do it
00:11:40in a winter tuesday night or a clock on a saturday night against against st mirin we will find out
00:11:46um tonight celtic of course trail hearts at the top of the league by seven points but celtic have a
00:11:51game in hand effectively you could say this is it hearts play tomorrow so a massive opportunity with
00:11:56a game against hearts at celtic park coming round on the the uh sunday the 7th of december um three
00:12:03points tonight cut that gap a little bit see what hearts do tomorrow it's all about keeping the
00:12:07pressure on them you mentioned the league cup final coming up against st mirin you could say simon this
00:12:12is a dress rehearsal for that but i don't think there'll be any kind of experimentation going on
00:12:16tonight this game in itself is so big for both sides yeah and i think martin o'neil and his coaching
00:12:21staff will just be treating that as such you know it's the first game after the international break
00:12:26uh this is an important period you know from now into the new years as i said earlier on the
00:12:32games come thick and fast we've got european ties coming up we've got a league cup final ahead of us
00:12:38at the start of next month however i think this tonight it's imperative that we got off to a good
00:12:44start in these games uh with the three points here through at uh paisley i mean the run of games is is
00:12:50pretty incredible you've got this one tonight you've got Feyenoord on thursday you've then got
00:12:54away to hibbs who played brilliantly today next uh sunday then you've got a midweek against dundee
00:13:01then you've got a game against hearts then you've got a midweek against roma then you've got a cup
00:13:05final it's every few days as every few days and it's going to test the full squad as we've talked
00:13:09about to ella it's depleted with yeah injury to some important key members of that squad but this is
00:13:16listen if you want to go and win if you want to be champions that we have been over the the piece
00:13:22you have to go and uh use the the squad to a maximum everybody will be required to perform at
00:13:28certain points and get through this stretch of games then then you look to the the window in
00:13:34january and see if we can bolster it again but these are the guys that have got the jerseys at the
00:13:38moment these are the guys that need to do the job starting with this evening's fixture

00:14:37might have had a little private exchange i'm sure it was um perfectly amicable i'm not sure casper
00:14:42would have wanted to see kieran tierney after the game on tuesday night but um i'm sure they're back
00:14:46to being best friends yeah it's the little quirks that are served up from football they've loved to be
00:14:50a fly on the wall of the dressing room when they they met up again uh in the celtic changing room
00:14:56after tuesday night and of course if denmark and the republic of ireland both get through their
00:15:00semi-final of the playoffs then casper schmeichel could be up against liam scales and johnny kenny
00:15:05in a playoff final that would be something here i say johnny kenny would be eyeing up some shots from
00:15:11the halfway line that's a bit harsh that's a bit harsh anyway celtic about to go into their pre-match huddle
00:15:18and eight o'clock saturday night kickoff not something we're used to but these players
00:15:27just have to get on with the business in hand st miriam we know we'll always have a physical
00:15:33presence we know at the back the likes of alex gogich is um going to provide that kind of never
00:15:38say die attitude and at the front killian phillips their number 88 he must be about six feet six
00:15:44at least michael mandron as well guys on the bench they can bring on like jonah ayunga
00:15:53yeah they're a big team and i think sometimes that isn't you know taking away any credit from
00:15:59as i say they're getting to the the final of the league cup there they can play they can play as well
00:16:04but they do have an aggressive side to them and that needs to be matched especially when the likes of
00:16:08celtic go away from home you know you have to match that first and then hopefully the football does the
00:16:13talking yeah one thing you always like to do and i'm sure it's one thing a manager said to you and
00:16:19your day and the team try silence the crowd early on because the home crowd at the start of a game
00:16:24can sometimes act like a a 12th man you can get in their faces perhaps get a goal and silence that home

00:17:05his season he's not had these problems to seek at the start of this season but it was a fantastic

00:23:35celtic have got away with one there yeah we're quite fortunate a real dangerous cross into the
00:23:42across the face of the six yard box yeah one of those ones between the defense and the goalkeeper
00:23:47defenders have to turn face their own goal they don't like touching that one submitting coming again
00:23:54good play that time from bacchus but he's dispossessed this time celtic under the cosh a bit

00:24:07lay that one off to hitati but it's cut out by phillips submit and have it on the halfway line

00:24:20shot whatever it was from bacchus it was pure and it's a goal kick to celtic yeah it's a lovely cross field
00:24:25pass from gogich and it's taken his first touches really good and i think he tries to half volley it
00:24:31across gets all wrong cut a little warnings for celtic just need to be better in possession comes
00:24:39up to johnny kenny there he needs to try and keep that position and build and use his midfielders
00:24:44ralston to trusty submitting looking to make the celtic players uneasy on the ball close them down
00:24:54quickly tierney under a bit of pressure there is dispossessed by phillips but tierney gets a
00:24:59leg in and it's gone out on the halfway line for a throw into st mirren
00:25:04that 3-0 defeat to hibbs here on the last outing um it hurt martin o'neil spoken about how it could
00:25:16have gone either way st mirren looked well beaten as far as the score line was concerned but the game
00:25:23really didn't show that but they're playing with confidence here against the champions
00:25:35here's marcus fraser backus plays that out to the right first time touching
00:25:42just kept in play phillips goes for the cross celtic player goes down it was
00:25:47michael mandron and they're trying to use his height but
00:25:51schmeichel releasing maeda submit enough two players on him and they win it back freckleton now
00:25:58cutting inside trying to play that one through to mandrin cut out by trusty
00:26:02atati now in a little bit of space can he release a teammate he can on that left hand side it's
00:26:06tunetki celtic are now up inside the st mirren half as richardson comes back to prevent tunetki getting
00:26:12any further tierney now forward to hatati mcgregor in support but it's ralston who gets the hatati pass
00:26:20and now ties in maeda tried to make the run for the one two with engels perhaps engels
00:26:28should have taken that option he's dispossessed and st mirren have it again declan john
00:26:33not quite sure what that was from lindaloo he just booted it out the park i was looking for
00:26:43i thought i was looking for a st mirren player on the deck injured really strange not sure what happened there

00:26:59back to skills 10 minutes gone st mirren nil celtic nil st mirren with the only
00:27:05chance in front of goal and what a really good chance it was
00:27:08celtic yet to put shemal george under any pressure whatsoever but perhaps they can do here with
00:27:14tunetki running at richardson supported here by tierney back to the tunisian tierney goes on the
00:27:20run tunetki cuts inside hatati now ralston cross to the far post and out comes shemal george
00:27:28takes that one easily and kicks it first time upfield trying to catch the celtic players who had been out
00:27:34on the break and that's a good defensive header from trusty back to schmeichel and a good quick release to
00:27:40ralston he gives it to mcgregor now tierney

00:28:32once again though unless the control is on point the st mirren player is there to

00:28:41yeah we need to be a little bit sharper yeah i was going to say st mirren just looking a little bit
00:28:47sharper in the opening 10-15 minutes under in and around any sort of miscontrol or heavy touch
00:28:53so that i'm playing the ball around well the referee has blown for a free kick to st mirren
00:29:05the challenge there on mandron as we watch this one again
00:29:11sliding challenge in from scales he's the one that's been penalized
00:29:16just catches him there absolutely late more importantly gives st mirren the opportunity to
00:29:24throw something into the box i've been quite happy to test that back line so far in the game
00:29:30putting balls into areas forcing celtic to defend
00:29:36backus and john over this one mandron back on his feet he'll go into an area where he can be a
00:29:42a physical aerial threat in the box that mirren have been looking out for chances like these this is
00:29:48where they feel they can hurt celtic

00:30:02evades everyone it's a good strong defensive line from celtic and it's gone all the way behind from a goal
00:30:09okay yeah a little bit of a waste from st mirren but it's out of decent shape there just seeing the ball out

00:30:56out to teneke first touch wasn't the best but still teneke onto the right foot great chance for
00:31:02sebastian teneke he went for goal this time tried the spectacular curler with the right foot and it was
00:31:08about six inches over the bar yeah he's unlucky with this one and for this
00:31:13occasionally ops to shoot which i think i would like to see him do a lot more of there's a couple
00:31:18before that in the similar area he was happy to offload it to a teammate
00:31:23he took the responsibility that time it wasn't far away
