00:00The U.S. has approved the sale of an advanced air defense missile system to Taiwan,
00:05worth nearly 700 million U.S. dollars, marking the second weapons deal for Taipei in a week.
00:11It comes as Taiwan accelerates its military modernization amid growing pressure from Beijing.
00:19The Pentagon says U.S. defense contractor RTX will supply Taiwan with three national advanced
00:25surface-to-air missile systems, or NASEMs, with delivery expected by February 2031.
00:31The NASEMs, used extensively by Ukraine against Russian missiles and drones,
00:36will boost Taiwan's air defense. This follows last week's $330 million sale of fighter jets
00:43and aircraft parts, the first under President Donald Trump. Washington, despite no formal
00:48diplomatic ties with Taiwan, is legally required to provide the island with means to defend itself,
00:54a policy that continues to anger China.
