00:00From the most trusted journalists at Comedy Central,
00:07it's America's only source for news.
00:10This is The Daily Show with your host, Ronnie T.
00:15Welcome to The Daily Show. I'm Roy Chang.
00:31We've got so much to talk about tonight.
00:33The house throws an Epstein release party,
00:35Leslie Jones starts by to roast air travel,
00:37and American politics has finally gotten too crazy
00:40for even Marjorie Taylor Greene.
00:42So let's kick things off with another installment
00:44of the very normal and not shady handling
00:47of the Epstein files.
00:54It's pretty boring stuff.
00:58We've learned a lot in the last week
01:00about the monsters that Jeffrey Epstein
01:02surrounded himself with.
01:03But let's not forget, he also surrounded himself
01:06with total f***ing losers.
01:08Harvard professor and former Treasury Secretary
01:11under Bill Clinton, Larry Summers.
01:13On Monday night, Summers said he is stepping back
01:16from public commitments.
01:17After messages between him and Epstein were released,
01:19where he asked the sex offender for advice
01:21about pursuing a young woman he described as his mentee.
01:24And Epstein described himself as Summers' wingman.
01:27Wow, really, I can't believe this guy needed help getting laid.
01:37Why are you asking Jeffrey Epstein to be your wingman?
01:40You are the president of Harvard, Larry Summers.
01:43Just ask Harvard to do a study on how to make you f***able.
01:46And by the way, Larry Summers is married,
01:50but he's all over these emails asking Epstein about girls
01:53like he just got his first pube.
01:55On March 16, 2019, Summers wrote,
01:58We talked on phone. I said, what are you up to?
02:01She said, I'm busy. I said, awfully coy you are.
02:04Tone was not of good feeling.
02:07Tone was not of good feeling.
02:13Awfully coy you are.
02:16Here's a tip on girls.
02:18Uh, they don't like guys who talk like Yoda.
02:23And if you're wondering,
02:24when did Larry Summers stop emailing Jeffrey Epstein about women?
02:27The answer is, up until he couldn't.
02:30In June of 2019, Summers asked Epstein about
02:33the chances of getting, quote, horizontal with a woman.
02:37Epstein responded that Summers needed to play the long game.
02:40Epstein was arrested soon after.
02:46Yeah, I kind of actually feel a little bad for Jeffrey Epstein.
02:50I mean, the walls are closing in on him at this point,
02:52and he still has to teach this dork game.
02:56He's, like, texting, uh, it's hard to talk,
02:58uh, hiding from feds.
03:01Keep negging.
03:04But Epstein emails are just a gross appetizer here.
03:07Everyone is still waiting for the disgusting main course.
03:10The DOJ's Epstein files.
03:13For months, Trump has done everything he can
03:15to prevent the release of these files.
03:17He's tried persuading Republicans not to vote for it.
03:19Then he tried threatening them.
03:21Uh, then he tried pointing up at the sky and going,
03:24Whoa, what's over there? What is that?
03:26But nobody looked except for Tommy Tuberville,
03:28who is actually still looking.
03:31But when it became clear that the House was gonna ignore Trump
03:34and vote to release the Epstein files anyway,
03:36Trump backtracked and said,
03:37Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, do that.
03:39That's-that's also what I want.
03:41Which is why today the vote passed unanimously.
03:44Almost.
03:45In a rare show of unity,
03:47the vote was 427 to 1.
03:50Louisiana Republican Congressman Clay Higgins,
03:52the only member voting against this bill.
03:56Okay, does Clay Higgins represent
03:58the third congressional district of Epstein Island?
04:01Who even is this guy?
04:05Oh.
04:10Okay, that makes sense.
04:12Uh...
04:13Now I believe this is a guy who would vote
04:16to block the Epstein files.
04:18I mean, he doesn't need the DOJ to release them.
04:21He's just gonna steal them from Indiana Jones later.
04:23But, uh, aside from him,
04:25all the House Republicans voted against Trump.
04:29Uh, even his most ardent supporter,
04:31Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia representative
04:33and woman who just started taking her meds.
04:36Trump was so mad,
04:38he called her a traitor this weekend.
04:40And I bet that got her back in line.
04:42I was called a traitor
04:44by a man that I fought for five,
04:48no, actually six years for.
04:50Let me tell you what a traitor is.
04:53A traitor is a...
04:54is an American
04:56that serves foreign countries
04:59and themselves.
05:03Okay, what the f*** is happening...
05:08with Marjorie Taylor Greene?
05:10Did she get the severance surgery?
05:12Was she...
05:14Was she bit by a radioactive Rachel Maddow?
05:17Like...
05:18She's...
05:20She's...
05:21She's getting so liberal
05:22that a month from now
05:23she's gonna be performing
05:24on NPR's Tiny Desk.
05:28I mean...
05:29And how dare she?
05:31How dare she imply
05:32that Trump serves foreign countries?
05:34Okay?
05:35The president is out here every day
05:37thinking about America first.
05:39President Trump rolled out the red carpet
05:41for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
05:44Okay, look.
05:47Sometimes America first
05:49means Saudi Arabia first.
05:52But so what?
05:53He rolled out a red carpet for MBS.
05:55It's not like Trump is endorsing everything he's done.
05:58Your Royal Highness,
05:59the U.S. intelligence concluded
06:01that you orchestrated
06:02the brutal murder of a journalist.
06:03You're mentioning somebody
06:04that was extremely controversial.
06:07A lot of people didn't like that gentleman
06:09that you're talking about.
06:10Whether you like him or didn't like him,
06:12things happened.
06:13But he knew nothing about it.
06:15And we can leave it at that.
06:16You don't have to embarrass our guests
06:17by asking a question like that.
06:19Yeah, hey.
06:20Hey, shut up.
06:23A little etiquette, please.
06:25This man is a guest in our country.
06:27Why are you asking him
06:29about the journalist he bone sawed?
06:32It's like no one has manners anymore.
06:35Trump is dealing with a lot of shit right now.
06:36Okay?
06:37He lost the Epstein vote
06:38being mean to his best friend.
06:40One more reasonable question
06:42and he's gonna lose it.
06:43Mr. President,
06:44why wait for Congress
06:45to release the Epstein files?
06:46Why not just do it now?
06:47You know,
06:48it's not the question that I mind.
06:50It's your attitude.
06:51I think you are a terrible reporter.
06:54Uh, it's the way you ask these questions.
06:57You start off with a man who's highly respected,
06:59asking him a horrible,
07:01uh, insubordinate
07:03and-and just a terrible question.
07:05And you could even ask that same exact question nicely.
07:09You're all psyched.
07:11Somebody psychs you over at ABC.
07:13You're gonna psych it.
07:14Uh, you're a terrible person
07:18and a terrible reporter.
07:19Well, I hope you guys are happy.
07:25Would it have killed you to ask MBS
07:28about the murder nicely?
07:31Just a little,
07:32excuse me, Crown Prince,
07:34would you be so kind
07:35as to stop murdering my colleagues?
07:37Pretty please?
07:38Please?
07:39And as for releasing the Epstein files,
07:42Donald Trump's position has been very clear.
07:44Kind of.
07:45I just want to be super clear on your position.
07:47Do you want to see that pass the Senate?
07:49Would you sign that bill if it gets to your desk?
07:51Sure, I would.
07:52Let-let the Senate look at it.
07:54Let anybody look at it.
07:55But don't talk about it too much,
07:57because honestly,
07:58I don't want to take it away from us.
08:00It's really a Democrat problem.
08:03Oh!
08:04It's a Democrat problem.
08:07So you don't want to talk about it to help them?
08:15That's nice.
08:17For more on the release of these files,
08:19we go live to Washington, D.C. with Josh Johnson.
08:26Josh,
08:28seems like Trump can't figure out his position
08:30on the Epstein files.
08:31Wrong again, Ronnie.
08:33All right, I've been talking to President Trump,
08:35and he's always had one position.
08:37The Epstein files will expose the sex crimes
08:39of the Democratic Party.
08:41It's the most explosive story of the century.
08:43So shut up and let's move on.
08:47Okay, but you just said
08:48it's the most explosive story of the century.
08:50You better believe it is.
08:51This shit is gonna blow your mind.
08:53They got photos of Bill Clinton and Larry Summers
08:55double-teaming a goat.
08:56All right?
08:59So take a quick look and then forget about it,
09:01so we can talk about how Trump's getting rid of pennies.
09:05Oh, wait, are you serious?
09:07Yeah, you heard me.
09:08No more pennies.
09:10No more pennies.
09:11No more pennies.
09:12Why aren't y'all clapping?
09:14Okay, wait, wait, stop.
09:16Wait, stop.
09:18Stop.
09:19Wait, go back to the Clinton and Larry Summers
09:21fucking goat thing.
09:22What was that?
09:23Well, Bill Clinton was, but Larry Summers
09:26couldn't close the deal with the goat.
09:29This man has no game.
09:31It was sad to watch.
09:33More sad than gross, even.
09:35Okay, but still, this is juicy stuff.
09:37Oh, the juiciest.
09:38There's also 4K video of Chuck Schumer
09:40and Bill Clinton double-teaming a goat.
09:42All right?
09:43Clinton had to get Larry Summers out of there.
09:45He was killing the whole vibe.
09:46Okay.
09:47Oh, my God.
09:48This is all insane.
09:49I know.
09:50No goat is safe.
09:51What's more insane...
09:53What's more insane is grocery prices.
09:55Did you know that under Donald Trump,
09:57free samples are now free?
10:00You're welcome, America.
10:01Okay.
10:02Okay, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
10:03If there's video of these sex crimes,
10:05can't Trump just release it?
10:06Hell, yeah.
10:07He can.
10:08He wants it out there now.
10:10Okay, then why doesn't he just release it now?
10:12He is.
10:13Right after the House signs the petition,
10:15so the Senate can sign the petition,
10:16so that he can sign the petition
10:18to get it out there in, like, eight months.
10:20It's called suspense.
10:22Okay, but why wait
10:23if it will ruin the Democrats forever?
10:25Because that would be too fast.
10:27You ever bite into ice cream too quick
10:29and then you get a brain freeze?
10:30Do you want that to happen to the whole country?
10:33I see you, Ronnie.
10:34Okay, Josh,
10:35I'm more confused now than when we started.
10:37Then my work here is done.
10:39In fact...
10:45I gotta head out.
10:46Uh, Larry Summers needs my help.
10:48He's at a petting zoo striking out right now.
10:52Help is on the way, Larry.
10:53Oh, more than I need to know.
10:55Josh Johnson, everybody.
10:56Yeah.
10:57When we come back,
10:58Leslie Jones will give us her opinion,
11:00so don't go away.
11:01Welcome back to The Daily Show.
11:21We all know I've got great opinions,
11:23but I'm not the only one.
11:24Studies show that other people also have opinions.
11:27So here with another installment of In My Opinion
11:30is our good friend,
11:31the one and only Leslie Jones.
11:39Yes!
11:40What's up?
11:41Happy Thanksgiving, America.
11:43Gobble, gobble.
11:46That's not a turkey.
11:47That's how Donald Trump sounded
11:49going down on Bubba Clinton.
11:54Oh!
11:55Personally, I don't know why people like Thanksgiving.
11:59It's just a meal where families argue
12:01over which race should be deported next.
12:04Ronnie, for the last time,
12:06albinos is not a race.
12:10But Thanksgiving...
12:13But Thanksgiving isn't just about racism.
12:16It's also the worst travel weekend of the year.
12:20Just look at the goofy shit people are doing
12:22to make flying 1% less miserable.
12:25It's the travel hack that's supposed to make
12:27taking a snooze on a plane a lot easier.
12:31Fasten your seat belt around your feet,
12:33and you will sleep like an angel,
12:35says one passenger.
12:37Flying has never been this comfortable before,
12:39says another.
12:41Get your goddamn toes off the seat
12:45before I put your ass under the plane
12:49with the pecs.
12:54That hack is dangerous as shit,
12:55and also it only works for tiny people.
12:59I can't do that.
13:00Why the you even on the plane?
13:02Just mail yourself.
13:03But, hey, I sympathize.
13:09Flying economy sucks.
13:12So I got a real travel hack for you.
13:15Be rich, bitch.
13:19Because if you fly in first class like your girl,
13:22you'll get treated like a queen.
13:27Okay, now, it really makes me feel bad
13:30when I say stuff like that.
13:34But it's true.
13:36They treat you so nice in first class.
13:39Hot towel, ma'am.
13:40Uh, may I take your coat, ma'am?
13:42Can you put that blunt out now, ma'am?
13:47Just so classy.
13:49And first class is getting nicer and nicer every day.
13:53Airlines are ordering more caviar and champagne,
13:56hiring Michelin chefs to design their menus,
13:58and teaming up with luxury designers
14:00to make custom in-flight pajamas.
14:03Now, I know what you're thinking.
14:05Champagne and caviar on a flight?
14:09Farts.
14:13But the farts are immediately vacuumed back
14:17to the economy class.
14:19Where do you think they get that air from the nozzle
14:26y'all be twisting on?
14:30Those are rich people farts.
14:34So classy.
14:37What else you got?
14:39New premium seats with doors, privacy wings,
14:42wireless charging, even showers to win over customers.
14:46Who takes a shower on the plane?
14:49And why is that okay?
14:51But when I take a whole bath on the sea train,
14:54all of a sudden it's a felony.
15:00But the rest of that stuff looks amazing.
15:02The only thing missing is the wireless vibrator charger,
15:06uh, that I'm gonna need.
15:07Yes, I bring my emotional support vibrator on the flight.
15:16Everybody knows the most important thing on the plane
15:20is the black box.
15:22But while it's fun to experience America's wealth gap in the sky,
15:39there's one thing missing that would really help me sleep better on the plane.
15:44Knowing the guy in the tower is awake!
15:47A dire nationwide shortage of air traffic controllers
15:49is creating an increasingly dangerous situation in the skies.
15:53One big problem, controller fatigue.
15:56We're tired of working six days a week.
15:58We're tired of working 10 hour days.
16:00Give these people some rest!
16:02This isn't an ordinary job.
16:05They up at the Wendy's, all you get is the wrong drink.
16:09They up at air traffic control,
16:12and I'm in the Emmy's Memorial Reel.
16:14And I better be in it!
16:20And when my name come up, you mother better clap!
16:35Better not, you better not treat me like some old editor from the 80s.
16:38If you can't give them time to sleep, at least give them some of the cocaine that the TSA finds.
16:48They won't be tired, and no cocaine gets wasted!
16:52Recycling!
16:58And even if the workers are okay, the technology they're working with is not.
17:04The FAA is running on a copper wire system.
17:07I mean, it's crazy.
17:08Every American home's got fiber into it now, and the FAA is running on 1950s technology.
17:13What you've ended up with is a system that was built essentially in the 1950s with spinning radars and people talking on radios, VHF radios,
17:22that really hasn't moved in to an age of the internet, to an age of computers, to an age of satellites.
17:301950s technology?
17:34Bitch, my Tamagotchi is newer than that!
17:39Oh, shit, my Tamagotchi!
17:42Oh!
17:43Oh!
17:44Oh, Lord!
17:45It's dead, Lord!
17:47I'ma got to feed it, Father!
17:48I'm so sorry!
17:50Oh!
17:52Oh, well.
17:53None of this needs to be happening.
17:57The FAA has a budget of $21 billion, and if that's not enough, I know where they can get more.
18:04Because right now, almost all of it comes from the ticket fees and taxes.
18:09That's stuff we, the consumer, are paying.
18:12What we need is the airlines to chip in more.
18:15They're focusing so much on luxury, they're forgetting the most important part of luxury.
18:22Getting from A to B in one piece.
18:26It doesn't matter how much my seat reclines if I'm using it as a flotation device.
18:31And if you still want to splurge on luxury shit, don't put it on the plane.
18:45Give it to the people in the tower.
18:47They should get the showers and the massage chair.
18:50Not us.
18:51Airlines.
18:53That's right.
18:54Yeah!
18:55Airlines should be sending them caviar, champagne, and blowjobs every morning.
19:03Send Trump's ass over there so they can get a little bit of that gum, gum.
19:10But that's just my opinion!
19:17Listen, Jones, everyone.
19:19What is a Hoback?
19:21When we come back, Akari will join me on the show, so don't go away.
19:37Hey, welcome back to The Daily Show.
19:40My guest tonight is an award-winning writer, director, and producer whose latest film is called Rental Family.
19:45So, what do you think we do?
19:48You, if I have to guess, you, um, you sell people.
19:56No.
19:58No.
19:59We sell emotion.
20:01Oh, how?
20:03We play roles in the clients' lives.
20:05Oh, thanks.
20:07But you can't just, you know, replace someone in your life.
20:11Yes and no.
20:13But people are willing to take a leap.
20:16Please welcome, Hikari!
20:17Oh, my God!
20:18Oh, my God!
20:19I love you guys!
20:20Thank you so much for having me!
20:21Thanks for coming on the show!
20:22Thank you!
20:23Filmmaker extraordinaire!
20:24Let's go!
20:25Let's go!
20:26Let's go!
20:27I know, I know.
20:28I know.
20:29Thank you!
20:30I know!
20:31Thank you!
20:32Thank you!
20:33I know!
20:34I know!
20:35I know, I know.
20:36Thank you!
20:37I know!
20:38I know!
20:39I know!
20:40Oh, my God!
20:41I love you guys!
20:42Thank you so much for having me!
20:43Thanks for coming on the show!
20:44Thank you, Hani!
20:45Filmmaker extraordinaire!
20:46Let's go!
20:47What a triumph the film is!
20:48I know, I know.
20:49Thank you!
20:50So, you moved to America?
20:51Yeah.
20:52Mm-hmm.
20:53When you were 17?
20:5417, yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:55You moved to Utah?
20:56I moved to Utah, yep.
20:57Right.
20:58Yep.
20:59Why?
21:00I was the only...
21:01I told my counselor, she asked me where I wanted to go.
21:05I said, I want to go to a place where I don't see my people.
21:07And they said, I have a perfect place for you.
21:11And I landed in Utah.
21:12Right.
21:13Yes.
21:14So, I'm very lucky to visit Japan once a year.
21:16Yeah?
21:17My wife and I love it.
21:18Oh, wow.
21:19Once a year.
21:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:21Train's on time.
21:22Everything tastes amazing.
21:23Mm-hmm.
21:24Why the would you leave?
21:27Why did you leave?
21:28Well, I left for American Dream.
21:30Go back!
21:32I...
21:33Well, now I feel like I should go back sometimes.
21:35I don't know.
21:36I don't know.
21:37But, no, I moved because I wanted to get on the school...
21:41yellow school bus.
21:42You know, I watched a lot of Hollywood movies,
21:44and I wanted to come to America and then just...
21:46You watched the movies?
21:47You didn't watch the news?
21:48I did not.
21:49I did not.
21:50Yeah, I did not watch the movies.
21:51I just watched all the heartwarming, good-feeling, good movies, and...
21:55No, that's what made me come here.
21:56Yeah?
21:57Yeah.
21:58Oh, my God.
21:59It was Back to the Future.
22:00Back to the Future, Goonies, and...
22:01Yeah, it was Robocop.
22:02Yeah, Robocop.
22:03Yeah.
22:05One and two.
22:06One and two.
22:07One and two.
22:08And three.
22:09Terminator.
22:10Terminator.
22:11One and two.
22:12Die Hard.
22:13Die Hard, yeah.
22:14Oh, my God.
22:15Yeah.
22:16So you moved to Utah.
22:18Yeah, I moved to Utah.
22:19And then you didn't...
22:20You came for show business, not filmmaking, but...
22:22Oh, yeah.
22:23I was doing a theater.
22:24You know, that was kind of my passion back then.
22:26I just became a photographer.
22:28I started shooting rap artists.
22:29Right.
22:30And then musicians.
22:31And then, next thing I know, I was at the film school.
22:33You had film school at USC.
22:34I went to USC, yeah.
22:35So you came here for the arts.
22:36Yeah, I did.
22:37Essentially, American arts.
22:38Yeah.
22:39And that's...
22:40I think sometimes Americans don't understand that outside of America,
22:42when you grow up.
22:43Yeah.
22:44You do come here for the arts.
22:45The arts, yes.
22:46You know?
22:47And we don't think of it...
22:48When you live here, you don't think of it as the arts.
22:49You think of it as, you know, TikTok.
22:51TikTok.
22:52That's right, right.
22:53That was the arts, yeah.
22:54But it was the arts to me, yeah.
22:55And so my question is, like, why didn't...
22:56Why was it something that you wanted to come here for
22:58instead of pursuing it in Japan?
23:00Well, I...
23:01I felt like, you know, like, as a kid,
23:03like, my parents had this, like, factory,
23:05and it was doing the press work.
23:06Like, you know, metal, pressing metals,
23:08and it felt like their life have to be better than pressing metals.
23:11I mean, you know, child labor didn't exist back then.
23:13So, you know, you're doing whatever their parents tell you.
23:16Sure.
23:17You're my grandparents.
23:18And I just wanted to, I don't know, see the world,
23:20what else is out there.
23:21I felt like...
23:22I just felt like in my gut,
23:23just felt like I had to get out of there.
23:25So I find an opportunity, and I moved to Utah.
23:27Right.
23:28You just followed something inside.
23:29And it looks like it paid off, because you did...
23:31Yeah, I did.
23:33Your first movie, The Rental Family.
23:34Yes, I did, I did.
23:35My...
23:36Yeah, my second movie.
23:38Yeah.
23:39Yeah.
23:40I mean, I appreciate that you guys understand
23:43how hard, like, making a movie is cool,
23:46but I don't think you fully understand
23:47how hard it is to make a movie.
23:49The number of hoops you have to go through.
23:51Yes.
23:52You have to get the script,
23:53you have to get the actor sound,
23:54you have to get financing,
23:55you have to get the cameras,
23:56you gotta get food, you gotta get coffee.
23:57Yeah, everything.
23:58Everything.
23:59You gotta people, you gotta, you know,
24:00free labor.
24:01You gotta deal with all this, yeah.
24:02So, and you managed to make this.
24:03Um, uh, can you tell us a little bit about
24:05what Rental Family is about?
24:06Sure.
24:07Uh, the Rental Family follows this American
24:09token white guy.
24:10And, uh, he, uh...
24:11Mr. Brandon Fraser.
24:12Mr. Brandon Fraser.
24:13And, uh...
24:16He's amazing in it.
24:17Um, and, uh, yeah, he's, uh, he's a...
24:20He's a...
24:21He's an actor who's not really quite a working actor,
24:24and we just follow him, uh, how he navigates
24:26through Tokyo, but he run into this Rental Family business.
24:29Uh, the owner.
24:30Right.
24:31And what is...
24:32What are Rental Families?
24:33This is a real thing.
24:34It's a real thing, yeah.
24:35So there's about...
24:36Uh, so Rental Family is where people who basically,
24:38uh, rent out, uh, well, the agency that rent out actors,
24:42or people who wants to be the surrogate
24:45of the people who needs, um, uh, to just be, uh, mom, dad,
24:49sister, brother, whatever you want.
24:50You just...
24:51You just walk in, and they're gonna play
24:53exactly what you asked them to do.
24:55And it's just kind of fulfilling the voice of, you know,
24:57emotional needs to...
24:59Sometimes people deal with the trauma or, you know,
25:01without any license, because they're not licensed therapists,
25:04but that's what they kind of do.
25:05So you could literally go into the shop and go,
25:07I want to hire a dad who likes me.
25:09Mm-hmm. Yeah.
25:10Exactly.
25:11Exactly.
25:12And they'll find someone.
25:13Exactly.
25:14And they were like, and you can go through the pictures,
25:15like, you know, going through the extra agency, right?
25:17Right.
25:18And it was like, ooh, he looked like that.
25:19I was like, I'm gonna pick him.
25:20Right.
25:21Tell him, like, as he walking, just grab my shoulder,
25:23or just say I love you.
25:24It's not my cheek.
25:25And then...
25:26Yeah.
25:27And he'll do exactly how you are.
25:28But there's no...
25:29Like, when you hire someone, and this is...
25:31Again, this is a real thing.
25:32Real thing, yeah.
25:33When you hire a fake dad...
25:34Yeah.
25:35When they enter, the illusion starts.
25:37There's no...
25:38Yeah.
25:39There's no pre-discussion.
25:40There's no, like, okay, I want you to come in here,
25:41and then...
25:42You can do that, too.
25:43You can order exactly.
25:44But...
25:45You can talk to him directly,
25:46or you can talk through the agency.
25:48Sure.
25:49You walk in as if...
25:51So there's an option.
25:52There's no broken characters whatsoever.
25:53Right.
25:54They just walk in there.
25:55Don't break character.
25:56No, don't break character.
25:57Just come in.
25:58Just be a dad.
25:59Yeah.
26:00And is this very...
26:01Is this...
26:02Okay, so how fringe is this in Japan?
26:04Well, uh...
26:05What do you mean, fringes?
26:06Like...
26:07Sorry, I'm a foreigner.
26:08No, no.
26:09I meant, like, you know, we...
26:10Obviously, it's a very, um, kind of, uh,
26:13out-there concept in America.
26:14Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
26:15How much do Japanese people also think
26:17this is an out-there concept?
26:18Uh, I think a lot of people.
26:20I mean, I'm Japanese,
26:21and then when I find out about this business,
26:23I was just like, what the...
26:24Yeah, you can say...
26:25You can say...
26:26Yeah, okay, cool.
26:27Um, so, yeah, I was just like,
26:29what the is happening?
26:30I...
26:31I have to stop.
26:32No, you're too polite.
26:33You're too polite.
26:34I'm Japanese, so, come on.
26:35Yeah, but you're American now.
26:36Just say it.
26:37So...
26:38No, seriously, say it.
26:39Say it.
26:40Yeah.
26:41Yeah.
26:42I love this.
26:44I love y'all.
26:45What?
26:46Way to break barriers.
26:47That's...
26:49I was told not to say it for us on anything.
26:51No, who told you to say that?
26:52Okay, well, my...
26:53Tell me the up.
26:54Okay.
26:55Yeah, so...
26:56So, yeah.
26:57Even in Japan, this is kind of like,
26:58uh, whoa, what is this?
26:59Yeah, what is this?
27:00And I'm Japanese, and I was just like,
27:01what the is this?
27:02Yeah.
27:03Okay, I said it.
27:04Um, and then, uh, I found out
27:05and why this business exists, right?
27:07Yeah, I just started on why.
27:09Like, what kind of people use services?
27:11Like, who gives the services?
27:12Like, who gives the services?
27:13And as we just went through really, uh,
27:16intensive, um, research, um, I found that
27:19those are really people who need to feeling lonely.
27:23And, you know, it's kind of like epidemic loneliness.
27:26People are needing somebody to be there for you.
27:28And, uh, happened to be in Japan.
27:30There's a lot of people need that.
27:31Right.
27:32So...
27:33So people are hiring, like, grandmothers.
27:34Yeah.
27:35Hiring brothers and sisters and fathers.
27:36Yeah.
27:37You can do...
27:38You can literally hire anybody.
27:39There's, like, a now grandma...
27:40There's a group of grandmothers
27:42goes into some random people's house
27:44and make lunch.
27:45Oh.
27:46Yeah.
27:47And then they're, like, happy
27:48because they eat lunch together.
27:49And she's like,
27:50Okay, I'll see you tomorrow.
27:51And they walk away.
27:52Oh.
27:53And they have business like that.
27:54And then there's a guy called Mr. Do-Nothing.
27:55He doesn't...
27:56He absolutely do nothing.
27:57Oh.
27:58Like, crazy.
27:59He...
28:00And his job is just sit next to you
28:01and just, like, eat ramen with you.
28:02You know?
28:03You need salt.
28:04He was, like, put the salt next to you.
28:05Oh, that's doing something.
28:06Yeah.
28:07Well, yeah.
28:08If you ask.
28:09If you don't, you can just eat ramen next to you.
28:10You can hire a useless man to come in.
28:11Exactly.
28:12And it's, like, what?
28:1330 bucks an hour.
28:14Oh.
28:15You should...
28:16Japanese people are looking for that.
28:17Come to America.
28:18There's a...
28:19You can get that for free.
28:20Um, and...
28:21And so this...
28:22This, um...
28:23You made a movie about it
28:24instead of a documentary.
28:25Like, why...
28:26Why do you choose a scripted narrative for this?
28:27I...
28:28I mean, I love cinema.
28:30I mean, there's...
28:31That's always the bottom line.
28:32I...
28:33I love watching...
28:34Growing up watching Hollywood movies
28:35and behind my grandmother's tea shop.
28:37And, you know,
28:38it just always felt like that's something that I...
28:40Maybe I didn't think about it then.
28:42But now, looking back,
28:43that was kind of my practicing
28:45of learning what kind of movie I want to make.
28:47So, yeah.
28:48Yeah, and I watched the film,
28:49and it's...
28:50It's beautifully made.
28:52The editing is perfect.
28:53The story's perfect.
28:54The acting is great.
28:55Everything feels very considered,
28:57and...
28:58And it's...
28:59It's one of those movies where,
29:00um...
29:01Even though you don't know...
29:03It's character-driven, right?
29:05There's no big action set piece.
29:06Yeah.
29:07But it's one of those movies
29:08that catches you from the start,
29:09and you can't stop watching it.
29:10Yeah.
29:11Every scene is very entertaining.
29:12That's cool.
29:13Do you have any, like,
29:14commentary on, like,
29:15uh...
29:16This...
29:17You know, there's some...
29:18Kind of like this back...
29:19Hollywood's kind of like
29:20in a little bit of a mess right now,
29:21in terms of...
29:22Everyone's stuck either between
29:23big blockbusters
29:24that maybe aren't making money.
29:25Mm-hmm.
29:26And...
29:27Small indie films that,
29:28you know, no one's watching.
29:29No one has money.
29:30Make no money.
29:31But then you...
29:32So I guess I'm saying
29:33that everyone's bitching
29:34about these big blockbusters,
29:35but when you make something small,
29:36and character-driven that's good,
29:38no one comes out to watch it anyway.
29:39Yeah.
29:40That's true.
29:41So...
29:42What the people want?
29:44I mean, seriously.
29:45What the...
29:46Yeah.
29:47What the...
29:48It's a good movie.
29:49Yeah.
29:50Watch out.
29:51Stop bitching about it.
29:52So...
29:53Yeah.
29:54I mean, you know,
29:55we just kind of...
29:56I mean, we...
29:57You hope that people will come,
29:58and I hope you guys will come
29:59for this one.
30:00Yeah.
30:01Yeah.
30:02I, uh...
30:03Yeah, but this...
30:04Really, this movie
30:05talks about connection.
30:06You know, I feel like
30:07in just...
30:08In general, people are like
30:09always constantly talking
30:10through phones or computers.
30:12There's always something between us.
30:13But this movie talks about
30:15the importance of having
30:17this true connection,
30:18even you're hiring people
30:20or, you know,
30:21whatever the circumstances is.
30:22Yeah.
30:23So, um...
30:24Yeah, talks about
30:25even though you're not related,
30:26you know, it's a found family
30:27that they create.
30:28Yeah.
30:29And then Ben and Fraser
30:30does an incredible job
30:31navigating individual character.
30:33Yeah.
30:34And then finding who he is,
30:35really, eventually.
30:36No, the message and theme
30:37is so relevant.
30:38Yeah.
30:39It comes through to it.
30:40And one of the beautiful things
30:41about the film, I feel,
30:42was that I guess technically
30:43it's a foreign film,
30:44but watching it,
30:45it didn't feel like
30:46a foreign film at all.
30:47It just felt like
30:48a well-made movie.
30:49How much did you consider...
30:51Um, how much thought
30:52did you put into
30:53Japanese dialogue
30:54versus English dialogue?
30:55Or did you just let it be
30:56what it was?
30:57I just kind of let it be.
30:58Like, I...
30:59Once I find, you know,
31:00who Phillip was
31:01and, you know,
31:02Brandon being the Phillip,
31:03I just kind of, you know,
31:04just wanted to be equal,
31:05but then what is it like
31:07to be in Japan
31:08if you're the Phillip's character,
31:10you know,
31:11being there for seven years?
31:12It's like a half and half.
31:13But I also wanted to make this movie
31:15for the world, you know?
31:16Sure.
31:17If it's just all Japanese,
31:18it'll be a little bit difficult
31:19to understand.
31:20So, yeah,
31:21we kind of find a fine balance
31:22in between, you know?
31:23No, I think you got the balance right.
31:24Like, when they speak English,
31:25it doesn't feel weird.
31:26Right.
31:27And it feels like it fits in the...
31:28And when they speak Japanese,
31:29also, obviously,
31:30feels correct
31:31because they're in Japan.
31:32Right.
31:33And you got a chance to direct
31:34one of your acting heroes?
31:35Yes, yes.
31:36Akira Emoto.
31:37And, yeah,
31:38he's like a growing...
31:39Yeah, childhood dream.
31:40Sure, he's a Japanese acting legend.
31:42And it was weird.
31:43How did you direct him?
31:44Was it weird to give him direction?
31:46Mmm, well, at first I was so nervous.
31:49I mean, he came to audition
31:50because he had to speak English.
31:51And then, like...
31:52Oh, shit, you auditioned him?
31:53I auditioned him.
31:54I was like...
31:55Oh, man.
31:56He was like, he's 77.
31:57He just turned 77.
31:58And he...
31:59Oh, that's awful only.
32:00Yeah, he never...
32:01And he never auditioned
32:02ever in his life.
32:03Right.
32:04You made your 77.
32:05You were a hero auditioned
32:06for your indie film.
32:07Yeah.
32:08Yeah, and so I was, like,
32:09all of a sudden,
32:10shitting my pants.
32:11And I was like, hey,
32:12excuse me, uh, can you do this?
32:13And he was like,
32:14what do you want?
32:15And I was like, oh, okay.
32:16But anyway,
32:17working with him was great.
32:18We did a lot of improvisation,
32:20and...
32:21You just told him to shut up
32:22and do it the way I tell you to do it.
32:23Yeah, exactly.
32:24Yeah.
32:25He took it a role.
32:26Never.
32:27No, he's great in the movie.
32:28He's awesome.
32:30You see these actors
32:31who are at the top of their game.
32:32Yeah, totally.
32:33The movie's a beautiful movie.
32:35It's telling a real human story.
32:36Yeah.
32:37And I hope everyone out there
32:38didn't go watch it.
32:39Yeah, totally.
32:40Hey, rental family
32:41will be in theaters everywhere
32:42November 21st.
32:44It goes up.
32:47All right, we're gonna take a quick break.
32:48We'll be right back after this.
32:50All right, I'll see you.
33:04Hey, that's our show for tonight.
33:06Now, here it is.
33:07Your moment of zen.
33:08We've worked with all presidents.
33:10Does Trump blow them all away?
33:12Son of the league, Mr. President.
33:16Mr. President.
33:17And Trump doesn't give a fist pump.
33:20I grabbed that hand.
33:21I don't give a hell where that hand's been.
33:23I grabbed that hand.
33:24Sorry.
33:26Sorry.
33:27Sorry.
