00:00Let's point the finger at you.
00:07A lot of stuff can be hush-hush sometimes in a small town.
00:12They don't talk about it much.
00:16I've never heard of a murder-for-hire case,
00:19especially out of Clay County, Kentucky.
00:22Drag racing, it's a subculture.
00:26Chicken fighting is well known.
00:31This was very targeted.
00:36It was somebody with a medita.
00:40He was very short.
00:42He had no teeth.
00:43Not attractive at all.
00:46The witch doctor, that was the name that he went by.
00:50He was not a good person.
00:54He was the pill doctor.
00:56He was a dope dealer.
00:58He was a rooster fighter.
01:00When it was revealed that it was a hitman, we all wanted to know one thing.
01:04I'm Kim Bixler, and my son's name is Trevor Dox.
01:26He was very outgoing.
01:29He loved racing, working on cars.
01:33My family was all girls except for Trevor.
01:36My name is Charlotte, and I am Trevor's aunt.
01:39My name is Patty, and I'm Trevor's aunt.
01:42My name is Annie Davison, and I'm Trevor's aunt.
01:45I'm the oldest.
01:46I am the youngest aunt.
01:49When Trevor was born, we were all so excited just to have the little boy.
01:54With me, I wanted a boy to be the protector of my daughters, and Trevor was that.
01:59Just somebody to watch over him, I guess, more.
02:01When Trevor was a child, his favorite thing to do was to work on things.
02:08You have to be careful what kind of tool you give him.
02:11Trevor would take apart my lawnmower.
02:13Four-wheeler.
02:14Chainsaw.
02:15Dirt bike.
02:17Wheat eaters.
02:18Cars.
02:19Toys.
02:20He would take things apart and put it back together and have stuff left over, but it still
02:26run.
02:26Exactly.
02:28He'd love anything with wheels on it.
02:34He started out racing four-wheelers, and Chuck was all about that.
02:39I've done it all my life.
02:41My dad done it, and my uncle's done it, and I guess he just run the family.
02:47He always liked going fast.
02:49He loved four-wheeling, and he got me into it.
02:52I would go race with him.
02:54I loved it.
02:55Mud holes galore.
02:58He loved the racing.
03:00We were up there every weekend, and he would win first place.
03:04He had a room full of trophies where he had won those races.
03:08Then he went from the four-wheelers to the Mustangs.
03:11This car, that's Trevor's old car, and it was all different colors, because he banged it
03:21up and wrecked it a few times and put these different motors and everything else in it.
03:26Trevor was always the one that would help.
03:31I know a lot of people say he would give you the shirt off his back.
03:35He wouldn't give you more than that shirt off his back.
03:37He'd give you his underwear.
03:38I mean, to be honest about it, he would.
03:4216 years old is when he started dating.
03:47For me, of course, you know, I'm the aunt.
03:50I didn't like it.
03:52He dated some good girls and, you know, had some good relationships.
03:56And I ain't gonna lie, we always said he made bad choices in women.
03:59I don't want, I mean, I don't want none of them to hear me say that, but we always said
04:02that to him.
04:03I would tell him that.
04:05First, it was Miranda.
04:06And then it was Brittany.
04:08And she ended up pregnant with Skyli.
04:13I was shocked.
04:15Because in my mind, you know, that's still my baby.
04:17And how can my baby be having a baby?
04:19And then that didn't work out.
04:21And then he met Ashley Lawson.
04:23Oh, she was a pretty girl.
04:24I mean, she's blonde hair, smile frame, very talkative.
04:28She ended up getting pregnant and having Trendon.
04:33My reaction when I found out that, you know, that she was pregnant, my question was to him,
04:39you know, are you going to marry her?
04:41And he's, no, he's, you know, he didn't want to get married.
04:44I think commitment scared him.
04:46Maybe that's what it was, that they broke up.
04:48So Trevor had two kids from two different girlfriends, Trendon and Skyli.
04:55They didn't live with them.
04:56So he had visitation rights with Skyli and Trendon.
05:00And then he started dating Ashley Collis.
05:05Okay, there were two Ashleys, Ashley Lawson and then Ashley Collis.
05:09In 2015, Trevor seemed happy.
05:13I remember he had got Ashley Collis' engagement ring.
05:17And he was pregnant with what would have been my third grandchild.
05:21And, uh, that's when all this was starting to happen.
05:32Trevor Dykes was my brother.
05:35We had the same dad.
05:36We just had different moms.
05:38We didn't grow up in the same house, but we were pretty much always together.
05:42In 2015, he had a good job.
05:45He had a home.
05:46He had a fiancé.
05:47But that morning, I was getting up.
05:51And my husband, we had a scanner because he was on the fire department.
05:54And the call came through on the scanner.
05:56And he said, somebody had been shot.
05:59He gave my brother's address.
06:09I just hit the floor and started screaming.
06:11I ran in the bedroom and actually scared my daughter, trying to get her up.
06:16I was 12 years old.
06:17And my mom came into my bedroom in a panic.
06:22Wake up, wake up.
06:23Your Uncle Trevor has been shot.
06:25But I remember holding onto her back and holding her hand as we walked down there, saying,
06:32Mommy, it's going to be okay.
06:34He's probably just been shot in the foot.
06:37I got a phone call.
06:39They said somebody had been shot.
06:41And they was up at Trevor's house.
06:43And I remember just dropping to the floor, not really knowing what had happened,
06:47if he was alive or if he was dead.
06:49And just the whole time kind of praying and just hoping for the best outcome.
06:53And we just decided to head towards Trevor's house.
06:56I will never forget when I put on top of that hill and when I got out of the car.
07:03I just jumped out of the car in the road and ran as hard as I could to get to it.
07:11It's two of the EMTs just grabbed me in a birth book.
07:18And they're like, you can't go in there.
07:21He's killed.
07:22I'm just starting screaming for him.
07:26They've killed Trevor.
07:27I remember saying an ambulance door was open.
07:33And I went to the door.
07:35And then Ashley Collis was in the ambulance.
07:40I remember telling her, take care of yourself and that baby.
07:44I remember she had blood on the bottom side for a face.
07:55It was the only sibling I had.
07:59A lot of things that, you know, me and him counted on for each other.
08:03I was afraid for my dad.
08:05There was a different kind of bond there.
08:08And they took his only son.
08:09They took his best friend.
08:11I mean, that's the hardest thing I went through in my life.
08:17And, you know, I even thought about killing myself.
08:21I said, if I kill myself, I ain't going to go to heaven and see him.
08:24I'd have to put my sunglasses on for people who wouldn't see me crying,
08:27looking up at the sky, man.
08:29I wanted to see him.
08:31Begging to see him.
08:33But I couldn't ever do see him.
08:35My name is Scali, and I'm Trevor's daughter.
08:38Even at such a young age,
08:44I still remember how I felt when I lost my dad.
08:53There's not many memories that I can even think of at that age.
09:00But losing my dad was one of the ones that I could remember.
09:06I wasn't even told.
09:14It's just so life-changing to lose somebody so close.
09:26It's a pain that never goes away.
09:31I was the reporter assigned to this story.
09:58This was the only murder-for-hire plot I believe I ever worked in my time.
10:05But I wasn't aware of this at the time I was working this case.
10:08I'm a retired sheriff of Franklin County, Kentucky,
10:14and I've studied this case and know it quite extensively.
10:18It was around 8 a.m. as Ashley Collis called 911
10:22and stated that her fiancé was shot multiple times.
10:34But according to Ashley,
10:36the gun jammed and the gunman fled the area.
10:40When the sheriff's office got there,
10:47they found Mr. Dykes shot three times deceased.
10:51It looked like he was drugged back into the kitchen a little bit.
10:57There were three rounds fired from a .45 caliber handgun.
11:01The first shot hit his head,
11:03the second shot hit his chest,
11:04and another shot hit his arm as he was going down.
11:10It seemed like the gun was probably 5 to 10 foot away
11:14from where the door was when he came out.
11:21So close enough to make it personal,
11:25this was very targeted.
11:26Was somebody with a vendetta?
11:31Was it because somebody was having an affair?
11:33Was it to get somebody out of the way?
11:35Who was his ex-wife or girlfriend?
11:38How many children?
11:38How many exes?
11:40Did his fiancé have anything to do with it?
11:43Did she have a change of heart?
11:46When you have a victim who is dead
11:49and another person who we know was there that survived,
11:54basic police work tells you,
11:58we've got to find out this person's story.
12:02The first people that they look at
12:04are the people that's closest to you.
12:06So, of course, Ashley Collis,
12:08she lived with him.
12:11She was the one closest to him.
12:13And, you know, I guess people don't always know
12:15people's relationships behind doors.
12:19Ashley Collis described the mail, and that was it.
12:21Obviously, that throws flags up because she was there,
12:25and all she saw was a blur of somebody.
12:27So she wasn't very detail-oriented.
12:30I always kept it in the back of my head
12:32why they didn't kill her too or shoot her
12:34because she was there.
12:36And if she's seen him, I mean, she's a witness.
12:40So why not her too?
12:41We had a cousin, Drew,
12:46and him and Trevor were like brothers.
12:47Growing up, they were brothers.
12:50But on the day of the murder,
12:52Ashley Collis went and moved in with her cousin,
12:55and they ended up being a couple
12:57and ended up seeing each other.
13:03Now, my sister Kim sort of suspected
13:05maybe Ashley were fooling around
13:08before Trevor was even murdered.
13:15He said, like, something's not right.
13:17Trevor was my fiancée.
13:33I was 17 when we first met,
13:36and it was around, I guess, 19
13:39when I started dating him.
13:41We usually just, like, cruised around town
13:45on the weekends.
13:47We raced a lot.
13:49And he's a very good gentleman.
13:52Like, you know, you don't find that a lot
13:54around here, so.
13:59A year and a half in,
14:01me and him was just talking
14:03literally about life things.
14:06And he was like, okay,
14:07so I was going to do this big whole thing for you
14:11that he said, I'm too nervous,
14:13and I'm just going to ask you, like,
14:15will you marry me?
14:16I looked at him, and I was like, yes.
14:19Like, he literally made me the happiest person.
14:22That was in June.
14:24And then two weeks into July,
14:27I just had this weird feeling.
14:29And I was like, am I pregnant?
14:36Me and him went to go get the pregnancy test,
14:38and I went in there,
14:40and it was positive.
14:42So I was screaming in the house,
14:44and he heard me from the garage.
14:46The garage was pretty far away.
14:49It was just, like, so much excitement.
14:56But, yep, it might have been
14:57two weeks prior to July 27th.
15:01Me and Trevor had, like,
15:02a really weird feeling that,
15:04like, someone was following us.
15:08We kind of just, like, brushed it off.
15:13On July 27th, 2015,
15:18me and Trevor woke up late for work,
15:21and I jumped in the shower real quick,
15:24because he usually went in early before I did,
15:26but we was both running late.
15:30And, um...
15:36I wanted to...
15:39I'm so sorry.
15:47God, I'm so sorry.
15:49I don't really talk about this much
15:54or to, like...
15:55There's just very few selected people
15:58that, you know,
15:59I've even talked to this about, so...
16:02Like, in details.
16:04It's just really hard.
16:07Gosh, okay.
16:11Um...
16:12He waited on me to get out of the shower
16:14to leave for work,
16:15and, um...
16:17We was walking to the door,
16:20and, you know,
16:21he hugged me, told me he loved me,
16:24and, you know,
16:25we see each other after work.
16:28When he opened the door,
16:31he kind of, like,
16:33pushed me back,
16:35like, into the corner,
16:37and I could see
16:38this guy standing there
16:40at the time.
16:42And, um...
16:45I feel like I kind of, like,
16:47blacked out.
16:51Because all I could hear
16:52is, like, the gunshots.
16:56But at the time,
16:57I didn't know it was gunshots.
16:58Like, I didn't know
16:59what was happening.
17:01And I ran and got the phone
17:03and went into the bathroom
17:06to call 911.
17:08But the way Trevor was laying,
17:13his foot was kind of, like,
17:15at the door.
17:17And, um...
17:19I knew, like,
17:21I had to get him back inside.
17:23Yeah, I got his, uh...
17:25I picked up his leg
17:27and, like, put it in the door
17:29so I could close it.
17:31Because I didn't know, like,
17:32what else was going to happen.
17:34So, uh, I just...
17:40Oh, God.
17:46Ashley Collis was the only
17:47witness to the crime
17:48other than the shooter.
17:50So you circle back,
17:52hey, did anything else?
17:53What about this?
17:54What about that?
17:55Is there anything
17:56that you can think of
17:57that might help us
17:58move this case forward?
18:00The police,
18:04they told me to come down there
18:05and describe everything
18:07that happened.
18:09I knew it was a guy,
18:11but at the time,
18:12it was just kind of, like,
18:13a black mask
18:14over his face.
18:17And I, like,
18:17saw from his nose up
18:19Trevor's mom,
18:21she got to the point
18:22where she was like,
18:23she's like,
18:23I don't believe you.
18:25It just hurt really bad
18:27for her not to believe me.
18:30Like,
18:31I literally laid there
18:32with her son
18:33in my arms,
18:34you know?
18:35So,
18:36it's just hard
18:37when everybody's
18:38coming at you
18:39with, like,
18:42assumptions
18:42and just,
18:44boom.
18:45there's one last thing
18:48to ask you
18:49that was just
18:49this rumor
18:50about
18:51some kind
18:52of affair
18:53going on.
18:54Oh, God.
18:56Okay.
18:58So,
18:58um,
18:59when I left
19:04our house
19:06in the ambulance,
19:07I feel like
19:08this one person
19:10in particular
19:10I got really close to
19:12after everything
19:13happened.
19:15never nothing before,
19:17so,
19:18that just really
19:19hurts my feelings.
19:20I'm sorry.
19:24I honestly
19:25hate that
19:27that happened
19:28the way it did,
19:30but
19:31when you feel alone
19:33and, like,
19:34you don't have nobody
19:35and you get
19:37attached to somebody
19:38that's took care of you
19:40the whole time
19:40that that happened,
19:42you start growing
19:43feelings for them,
19:44so...
19:46Later in the morning
19:56when the sheriff's office
19:57were trying to find
19:59the shooter,
20:00they smelled something
20:00burning behind
20:02the residence.
20:03They come upon
20:04a burn pile
20:05which had some
20:06clothing in it.
20:07Gloves,
20:08I believe a mask.
20:09So, obviously,
20:10that's a clue.
20:11The shooter,
20:12when he fled the scene,
20:14stopped up on side
20:15of the hill
20:15and burned some
20:16of his clothing
20:17because he was worried
20:18about the gunshot residue
20:19and it was in the direction
20:21of where Ashley Callis
20:23stated that the suspect
20:24had fled.
20:25So, she actually
20:26told the truth.
20:28Early on
20:29in this investigation,
20:30the sheriff's office
20:31didn't have a lot
20:32of answers.
20:33They were exploring
20:33a number of leads
20:35to see what was going on.
20:36It turned out
20:41that Trevor
20:42had had some sort
20:43of dispute
20:43with drag racing.
20:52Trevor and I,
20:53we did a lot
20:54of street racing.
20:55Trevor,
20:56he would take home
20:57the W most of the time
20:58being actual competitive,
21:00trying to win.
21:01You know,
21:01they get a little mad
21:02about that.
21:03There was a few fists
21:06thrown and
21:07I actually got
21:09sucker punched
21:11by a guy
21:12that came through
21:12the crowd.
21:13Another guy grabbed me
21:14by the neck from behind
21:15and put me on the ground
21:16and next thing you know,
21:18Trevor pretty sure
21:19pulled the pistol
21:19and shot it
21:20into the ground.
21:21And then he laughed
21:23and someone else
21:24ended up with the pistol.
21:25I'm gonna say,
21:26yeah,
21:26he probably did have
21:27a few enemies.
21:28I feel like
21:33the beginning
21:34of July,
21:35he just had
21:36this weird feeling,
21:37I guess,
21:38that something
21:39was gonna happen,
21:40but I feel like
21:41it wasn't
21:42with racing.
21:45Asha Lawson,
21:46she caused Trevor
21:47a lot of problems
21:48every time he would
21:49get in a relationship.
21:53I am the mother
21:55of Trevor's
21:56oldest child,
21:57Skyly.
21:58But once I found out
22:00I was pregnant,
22:01there was another
22:01girl,
22:03Ashley Lawson.
22:10Me and Ashley Lawson
22:11went to school together.
22:13We played basketball
22:14against one another
22:14our whole lives.
22:16One day,
22:17in the middle of the night,
22:18I get some texts
22:19and calls
22:20that he's with Ashley.
22:22And from that day on,
22:24he was with Ashley,
22:25and I was definitely
22:27mad and upset
22:29when she got pregnant
22:31with Trendon.
22:33And I cut ties
22:36completely.
22:39You know,
22:39I know how she was,
22:41how her family was.
22:43Ashley Lawson's family
22:45did not have
22:45the best reputation
22:46in the community.
22:48They weren't known
22:49as fine,
22:49upstanding citizens.
22:50I heard stories
22:54about Ashley Lawson's
22:55family.
22:56You just kind of
22:56heard that family
22:57wasn't a family
22:58that you wanted
22:58to mess with.
23:01With Ashley and Lawson
23:02and Trevor,
23:03you would see them
23:04like get-togethers
23:05and stuff a little bit,
23:06but they would argue
23:07and fuss with each other.
23:08Anything and everything
23:09she could argue
23:10with him about.
23:11If he told the sky
23:12was blue,
23:12she would argue
23:13with him,
23:13there it wasn't.
23:13I know she had
23:17actually shot herself
23:17at some point
23:18after her relationship
23:19had ended.
23:21It says in the report
23:22it was a self-inflicted,
23:24an accidental discharge.
23:27My first thoughts are,
23:29was it really accidental
23:31or did she perhaps
23:33do this intentionally?
23:36Accidental discharges
23:37aren't unheard of
23:39and bad things can happen,
23:41absolutely.
23:42But during the time
23:44she was in the hospital,
23:45we found out
23:46that she had drugs
23:46in her system.
23:49And Trevor,
23:50when he found that out,
23:52you know,
23:52he was not going
23:53to let Trendon
23:54be brought up
23:54in that kind of environment,
23:55so he went
23:56and filed for custody.
23:58The next custody hearing
24:00would have been
24:00pretty close
24:01to when he was killed.
24:05At that time,
24:06Ashley Collis posted
24:08that they was engaged.
24:09she was pregnant
24:12and Trevor was fixing
24:14to get a custody of Trendon.
24:17That's what broke
24:18the camel's back.
24:24That morning,
24:25Trevor was shot.
24:29At that time,
24:30I knew it was a guy.
24:31I didn't know who it was,
24:33but I do feel like,
24:35you know,
24:36it was Ashley Lawson
24:38behind it.
24:40What about her dad
24:41and some of the other
24:42family members?
24:43Would they go as far
24:45to kill somebody?
24:47Over the course
24:48of this investigation,
24:50it came out that
24:51there was a history
24:54of run-ins
24:55with the law
24:55and her family,
24:56including
24:57her father.
24:59James Lawson,
25:00please.
25:04I had an incident
25:05take place
25:06back in
25:071999.
25:09James Lawson,
25:10which is Ashley
25:11Lawson's dad,
25:12had
25:13actually
25:14shot somebody.
25:16I was originally
25:16charged with
25:17first-degree murder.
25:20When Trevor was
25:21murdered,
25:21we all knew
25:22who it was.
25:26This tortural knowledge
25:27is very important
25:28because dad
25:30could have very easily
25:31been our suspect.
25:33But we were able
25:33to find out
25:34as part of the investigation
25:35that Ashley Lawson's dad,
25:37James Lawson,
25:37at the time,
25:38was in prison
25:39for breaking parole
25:40and eliminate him
25:42as a potential suspect.
25:47Obviously,
25:47Ashley Lawson,
25:49she's going to be
25:49somebody that I would
25:50want to talk to.
25:51Can you tell me
25:52about a few times
25:52that you all had
25:53arguments?
25:54I had some
25:55treatment every
25:56close to a year.
25:57Ashley,
25:58she kind of said,
25:59you know,
25:59just kind of downplayed
26:00that relationship.
26:02As everybody knows,
26:03co-parenting,
26:04you're going to talk,
26:04you're going to communicate.
26:05Okay, Trevor,
26:06ever want full custody
26:07of Trent?
26:08Yeah.
26:09When's the next
26:10court date for her?
26:11On the 12th.
26:12So that's 16 days
26:13from now.
26:14Detectives pressed
26:15her for hours and hours
26:16because if he was
26:18eliminated,
26:18she was going to
26:19get full custody of him.
26:20But police did
26:21determine that
26:21Ashley Lawson
26:22did have this alibi.
26:24Okay, straight out.
26:25She was with
26:35her new boyfriend
26:36at the time
26:37of this shooting.
26:39Detectives did
26:40a search warrant
26:40to her cell phone
26:42provider.
26:44And honestly,
26:45they were able
26:45to verify
26:46that she was
26:47at the cabin
26:48that night before
26:49and that morning.
26:50And it was
26:51finally something
26:52that they can confirm
26:53that she actually
26:53dealt with the truth.
26:57I didn't believe
26:59Ashley Lawson's
27:00alibi for a second.
27:02And I still don't.
27:06I think Ashley Lawson
27:07has a problem
27:09with controlling people
27:10and she lost
27:11control of Trevor.
27:13And I think
27:14she realized
27:15that she would
27:16never have him back
27:17when she found out
27:18that he was engaged
27:20to Ashley Colas.
27:21They had a home.
27:22They had bought cars.
27:24You know,
27:24they were doing
27:25really well
27:25and she'd rather
27:28him be dead
27:29than not to have him.
27:32The detectives
27:33kept circling back
27:34to Ashley Lawson.
27:35And then
27:39all of a sudden
27:40her fiancé,
27:44Thomas Miracle,
27:45comes to the sheriff's office.
27:47He voluntarily
27:48comes in
27:49and as he is
27:51talking to them,
27:52but it's very,
27:53very rare
27:54when this happens.
27:57He was trying to say,
27:58look,
27:58here I am.
27:59I got nothing to hide.
28:00He was at home
28:01and had an alibi
28:02with Ashley.
28:04I think he was trying
28:04to go on the offensive
28:05to do damage control
28:07at that point.
28:08So detectives,
28:10now they need
28:10to look at
28:11Thomas Miracle.
28:12The first time
28:13I met
28:13Thomas Miracle,
28:15I mean,
28:16he's an old man.
28:17He had no teeth.
28:18Not attractive at all.
28:21Ashley Lawson's boyfriend,
28:22I heard,
28:23he loved chicken fights.
28:24He had a nickname
28:25named The Witch Doctor.
28:26The Witch Doctor,
28:28that was the name
28:29that he went by.
28:30That was his
28:31chicken fighting name.
28:32Chicken fighting
28:34is well known,
28:36you know,
28:36in these rural areas.
28:38They use spurs
28:39on these chickens,
28:40put them in a little
28:41ring together.
28:42And fight.
28:43They would peck
28:44to his last breath,
28:45reach over and peck
28:46the other chickens.
28:47They bet,
28:47they gamble.
28:48It is
28:49a blood sport.
28:51It's illegal,
28:52certainly.
28:53Thomas Miracle
28:56done that,
28:57yeah.
28:58That's where
28:58he met Ashley at.
28:59Because Ashley
29:00got where she was
29:01handling these chickens.
29:02You had to have
29:03somebody to handle
29:04your chickens
29:04to fight them.
29:06Why is she
29:07with somebody
29:08like that?
29:12So,
29:13detectives
29:14pulled
29:14Thomas Miracle's
29:15phone records,
29:16which did,
29:17in fact,
29:18did not show him
29:19at the cabin.
29:20It actually showed him
29:21up by Trevor Dyke's
29:23house,
29:24which throws off
29:25a whole array
29:26of flags like,
29:27holy cow,
29:27okay,
29:28here we go.
29:29And also showed
29:30receiving texts
29:31from an unknown
29:32number and calls
29:33at odd hours
29:35of the night.
29:36He got a 3 a.m.
29:37phone call.
29:37He also had
29:38a 639,
29:39a 642,
29:40a 646,
29:41and a 733,
29:42all the way up
29:43to the murder.
29:44Yeah,
29:45that's a lot.
29:45And it is weird
29:46activity,
29:47all from an unknown
29:48number that had been
29:50texting him
29:50and calling him.
29:51So,
29:51obviously,
29:52I would want
29:53to see who that is
29:54and what that was about.
29:56So,
29:57Thomas Miracle
29:58ended up calling
29:59a phone register
30:01to a woman
30:02who worked
30:03at a hospital
30:05locally.
30:07The question was,
30:10why was Thomas Miracle
30:11calling her?
30:13so she tells detectives,
30:20this is not my phone.
30:22My husband uses
30:23this phone,
30:25Roscoe Henson.
30:29Roscoe Henson was
30:31a low-level drug dealer.
30:35Actually,
30:35Roscoe Henson
30:36used to live
30:38with my neighbors.
30:38He was very short.
30:41He had a beard
30:42and a mustache.
30:45I think Trevor
30:46even knew him,
30:47maybe talked to him
30:48before.
30:48They weren't like
30:49friends or anything
30:51like that.
30:52You know,
30:52that's typical
30:53of a small town,
30:54too.
30:54Everybody knows
30:55everybody.
30:56So,
30:57investigators
30:57interviewed
30:58Roscoe Henson.
30:59They brought him in.
31:02And,
31:03to their surprise,
31:04he admitted
31:05to everything.
31:08He said
31:09he had approached
31:10Thomas Miracle
31:12to try to help him
31:14with his roosters.
31:15And Thomas said,
31:15man,
31:16I got enough people
31:16doing that.
31:16I don't need you.
31:18They said,
31:18I do have a problem.
31:20And then told him
31:21that his girlfriend
31:22or Beyonce
31:23had a problem
31:25about Trevor Dykes
31:26and he wanted him
31:27scared.
31:29Then it went from
31:30wanting him scared
31:30that Ashley Lawson
31:32is just,
31:32you know,
31:32she just wants him gone.
31:34She wants to
31:35get rid of him.
31:36The price promised
31:37was $5,000
31:38to carry out this hit.
31:40So,
31:40they come up
31:41with a plan.
31:42The original plan
31:43was for Roscoe Henson
31:45not to just kill
31:47Trevor Dykes,
31:48but also to kill
31:49Ashley Collis
31:51and then set
31:53the house
31:53on fire.
31:55Roscoe Henson
31:58changed his mind.
32:00He actually thought
32:00there was a child there,
32:01which there wasn't,
32:03and he didn't
32:03want to do that.
32:04So he had implements
32:05to set the house
32:06on fire,
32:07which he then used
32:08to instead
32:09destroy evidence
32:11of the gloves
32:12and items
32:13that he used
32:14during the shooting.
32:15when they arrested him.
32:20I got a call
32:21to the,
32:22they're getting ready
32:24to bring Ashley in.
32:25I went to the jail.
32:29And I remember
32:30when they got her
32:31out of that car,
32:32I looked at her
32:35and the door
32:36was closing.
32:39And I told her,
32:40I said,
32:40I hope you rot in hell
32:42for what you've done.
32:44She was on
32:51house arrest.
32:53And I mean,
32:54we couldn't wrap
32:55our heads around
32:55how she could be
32:57at the house
32:58sitting
32:58when she was
32:59involved in this.
33:00I mean,
33:00she got pregnant again,
33:01had another kid
33:02with another man
33:03while she's on
33:04house arrest.
33:06It took seven years
33:07for the hearing
33:07to start.
33:13I begged them
33:16to move it.
33:16I begged them
33:17to have it moved
33:18out of Clay County
33:18because I was scared
33:20because she's
33:21going to get away.
33:23Absolutely did not
33:24take off really.
33:26What we've got here,
33:27we've got to rush
33:28to judge.
33:29so that they could
33:30go after that girl
33:31right over there
33:32and it makes
33:33a good story
33:34for your lifetime movie.
33:36There was plenty
33:37of other movies.
33:38Thomas Merrick
33:39was not a good person.
33:42He was the pill doctor.
33:44He was a dope dealer.
33:46He was a rooster fighter.
33:48All of those things.
33:49They were saying
33:50that Merrick
33:51took it upon himself
33:52to have Trevor killed.
33:54I was very surprised
33:57that Ashley Lawson
33:58took the stand.
33:59on her own.
33:59Can you state your full name
34:00for the record?
34:02Ashley McCollas.
34:03I mean,
34:04she literally
34:04got on stand
34:05and smiled.
34:08She had a cross on.
34:10She was trying
34:10to play.
34:12There's no way
34:12that I could have done this.
34:14Can you describe
34:14to us what
34:16the relationship
34:17with Chicken Man
34:19or which doctor was?
34:22There really
34:23was no relationship.
34:24He helped me
34:25with providing
34:27my medicine.
34:27and I was addicted
34:28to drugs
34:29at the time.
34:30She told them
34:31that Thomas Dan Miracle
34:33was her fiancé.
34:35But in the trial,
34:37she was saying
34:38they didn't have
34:39a relationship.
34:41Roscoe Henson.
34:42Did you know him?
34:43No.
34:44Had you ever
34:45talking to Roscoe Henson?
34:47No.
34:47Did you encourage
34:49any of this behavior?
34:51I didn't.
34:51Did you have
34:52any knowledge
34:52of it at all?
34:54I did not.
34:57Thank you,
34:57Ms. Lawson.
34:58You stepped down, man.
35:00You know,
35:00the thing is,
35:01Thomas Miracle
35:02didn't have
35:02a whole lot of motive
35:03other than
35:04to please her.
35:06But throughout
35:07this five-day trial,
35:08they heard a lot
35:09of testimony,
35:10including
35:10Roscoe Henson.
35:11First,
35:12tell us your name,
35:12please.
35:13And Thomas Miracle.
35:14Thomas,
35:14Roscoe Henson.
35:16Both testified
35:17against Ashley Lawson
35:19in her trial.
35:21Now,
35:21at some point in time,
35:22were you approached
35:22or met up with
35:23the gentleman
35:23of the name of Roscoe Henson?
35:25Yes, sir.
35:25I said,
35:26well,
35:26I actually got a problem
35:27she didn't even take care of.
35:28She's having custody problems
35:30with her young and steady.
35:34He said,
35:34well,
35:34I'll take care of it.
35:35I'll kill him
35:36in front of her.
35:37I said,
35:37well,
35:37I don't know.
35:38I'll have to talk
35:38to her about it.
35:39I actually came out
35:40on the porch
35:41and she said
35:42something about kids.
35:42Trevor's trying
35:43to take her kids.
35:44Said she's having
35:45killed her kids.
35:46before she does it,
35:47before he done it.
35:48And what did you
35:49then do with it?
35:50I went to the right.
35:52That that was
35:53what he thought
35:53was he done?
35:53Yes, sir.
35:54What did she say?
35:56Tell him to do it.
35:58Tell him to do it?
35:59Yeah.
36:00But you heard that statement.
36:01I did.
36:02It means kill Mr. Dyer.
36:03Yes.
36:04She said,
36:04that's what I want to do.
36:05She wanted that done?
36:06Yes, sir.
36:07Throughout this five-day trial,
36:08the defense attorney
36:09tried to cast doubt.
36:11Here's where you're
36:12trying to twist me up.
36:13I'm not trying
36:14to twist you up.
36:15I'm not.
36:15If they could get
36:16one juror to believe
36:18that she was innocent
36:19and she was this
36:20sweet, nice girl,
36:21then that's all they knew
36:23and she'd walk free.
36:26We were waiting
36:27on a verdict.
36:29I think it was like
36:3012.30 in the night time
36:31we was in that courthouse.
36:33The jury would go ahead
36:35and go back to the jury room.
36:37One or two of the jurors
36:38was having problems.
36:39They just couldn't
36:40come to a decision.
36:43We thought there was a juror.
36:45She's probably kin to them
36:46and she knows them
36:48and they're not going
36:49to convince them.
36:51And she's going to get off.
36:52She's going to get off
36:52and not guilty.
36:53In the end,
36:57I'll never forget
36:57Kim Concey.
36:59The jury is getting ready
37:00to go out.
37:04Ladies and gentlemen,
37:05jury,
37:05several hours ago
37:06you reported
37:07that you were
37:09deadlocked.
37:11Have you now been able
37:12to reach the verdict?
37:14Yes, y'all.
37:14We, the jury,
37:17do agree
37:18and find the defendant
37:19actually lost him
37:20guilty of criminal
37:21for questioning.
37:24So commit murder.
37:26The outburst
37:27in that courtroom
37:28at that night.
37:30It was for Trevor
37:32just to know
37:33that we got justice
37:34for him.
37:44For the two men,
37:46I think this story
37:47boils down to
37:48one thing
37:49and that's
37:50desperation.
37:52Thomas Miracle
37:53who was desperate
37:54to win
37:54the affections
37:55of Ashley Lawson.
37:58Roscoe Henson
37:58who was at such
37:59a low point
38:00that $5,000
38:01to kill someone
38:04seemed like
38:06a fair trade.
38:14The next day
38:22ladies and gentlemen
38:23please be seated.
38:24We got her
38:25sentence.
38:27Would the jury
38:28do agree
38:28and fix the defendant's
38:30punishment at 20 years
38:31signed by the foreperson?
38:32We were not happy
38:34that she got less time
38:35than any one of them.
38:36I will never understand.
38:38To me,
38:38that's not justice.
38:40It was like
38:40we all died that day.
38:42Yes.
38:44I was awarded
38:56so permanent custody
38:57for my grandson.
39:01Now he don't have
39:02his dad.
39:03He don't have his mom.
39:06How can you say
39:08you love a child
39:10when you can have
39:11his dad killed?
39:12And you're putting
39:15that child through
39:16all that hurt.
39:19That's not love.
39:23I think about
39:24what it would be like
39:25all the time
39:25to have him around.
39:30Never really
39:31got the chance
39:32to have a
39:33father
39:34bigger.
39:35I feel like
39:52ever since then
39:53my life
39:53has literally
39:54crumbled
39:55and
39:57I don't have
39:58the best luck
39:59ever.
39:59I was expecting
40:03and
40:04I didn't lose
40:09the baby
40:10until his funeral
40:11so
40:11that was really
40:14hard.
40:20She just took
40:21someone that
40:22I really loved
40:23and thought
40:24I was going to
40:24spend the rest
40:25of my life with
40:26and just
40:27crumbled my
40:29life into
40:29her hand.
40:32If anything
40:33like she
40:34should have
40:34got the
40:34next time.
40:37Like I know
40:38who pulled
40:38the trigger
40:39but she
40:40should have
40:40got that.
40:41She's the
40:42one who
40:42made that
40:43happen.
40:56Who was
40:59behind this
41:00series of
41:01attacks of
41:02a neighborhood
41:03icon?
41:05He was
41:05punched
41:05multiple
41:07times.
41:09And he
41:09had a hood
41:10on?
41:10Yes.
41:11The mask.
41:12The less
41:12people know
41:13the better
41:14it is.
41:14The less
41:15people got
41:15killed.
