Schools closed in ACT, South Australia and Tasmania over contamination fears

Tasmania is following the ACT in closing public schools due to fears about asbestos contaminated play sand with 28 sites to be shut tomorrow. With closures also affecting some specialist and non-government schools in South Australia and Queensland there are now calls for tougher product safety laws.

00:00Returning to class now that some Canberra schools have reopened, the ACT Government's

00:07approach dividing opinions.

00:09It was a bit of conflicting messaging about it's obviously very serious, we need to close

00:15the schools, we need to really make sure we clean everything and at the same time there's

00:19no risk.

00:20They've taken a fairly conservative position or a fairly safe one and I think that's the

00:26right choice.

00:27I miss my friends but I kind of like the day off.

00:29Other ACT public schools were still closed and could remain so for days as the laborious

00:35task of testing and clean up continues.

00:37It is quite a process of work and we've had some hiccups along the way, we acknowledge

00:43that but we've learned from those.

00:46It's experience now being shared with other states including Tasmania where a dozen non-government

00:52schools were shut or partially closed today and 28 public schools will close tomorrow.

00:58In light of the confusion that we are seeing right around Australia and different responses

01:03in different states and territories and even different responses with independent schools

01:07and with Catholic schools right across Australia, we felt it was important to take a further

01:12step and a really precautionary measure.

01:14Some of the sand recalled last week was sold online and consumer advocates want stronger

01:20safety laws for all products.

01:23The responsibility for those standards sits with the online third party sellers in this

01:28case when we're talking about online marketplaces.

01:31Now those third party sellers could be small offshore businesses that don't really care too

01:36much about their reputation or compliance in Australia.

01:40It's a chance some are no longer willing to take.

01:44We won't be using any of those coloured sand products even beyond the ones that have been

01:48recalled in our schools.
