More than 50 Tasmanian schools are closed or partially closed today as the coloured sand asbestos contamination scandal widens. A number of schools also remain closed in the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia. More than 450 public education sites in South Australia had been using the recalled products as well as 150 in Queensland. Tasmania's Education Minister is playing down the exposure risk.

00:00This was a low risk situation, so when you make decisions about how you're going to
00:08respond to circumstances, if it's a high risk it's a certain level of response, a medium
00:13risk, but this was a low risk. So I'm really pleased with how the department has responded.
00:18Really the most important thing is that these fibres are disposed of safely and appropriately
00:22and in some cases that may involve closure of a whole school, in some cases it may be
00:26able to be done very safely, just with the building being closed and the professionals
00:31coming in. This is not a cause for panic or alarm. Your children and your families will
00:37by and large be very, very safe, at very, very low risk of any disease.
