00:01Taking the message to the streets.
00:06Our schools need to be properly staffed so that students get the support they need to succeed.
00:13A one hour teacher strike at 20 Tuggeranong schools this morning, wrapping up a week of rolling stoppages across the
00:21territory.
00:21The action the first of its kind in 15 years, after months of negotiations over pay and conditions.
00:29The sticking point at the moment is a staffing guarantee.
00:33In term three we didn't have enough staff at our school to like fulfil a five day week so we
00:40were having collapsed classes every Friday.
00:43Leaving some teachers with classes of 50 students.
00:46A lot of people in the community might think that we're out here for pay only, we're out here for
00:50conditions.
00:51Our working conditions are our students learning conditions and we're here to support their learning and their growth.
00:56But the union is expecting an improved package after rejecting the government's last offer of a 9% pay rise
01:03over three years.
01:05We just want to make sure that we have enough funding to do all the things that we really want
01:08to do for all of our students.
01:10There was a full day workshop last week with the union to talk about the staffing guarantee claim,
01:15which specifically addresses the issue of split and collapse classes.
01:20The union is hopeful it'll come to an agreement with the government over the next few weeks,
01:25but if it can't, two hour work stoppages could be in the equation towards the end of this year
01:31and further strike action could spill over into 2027.
01:35We just want the best for our students so please make it happen.
01:39We're so sick of striking.
01:41Fix our system!
