00:00A 40-save outing from Jonathan Quick wasn't enough to hold off the Red Wings,
00:04but who cares about the hockey?
00:06Everybody's talking about the post-game brawl between the two sides.
00:09So let's break it all down.
00:11Jim Cierney, editor for Forever Blue Shirts.
00:14Jim, thank you for hopping on with this, man.
00:17Let's go straight into it.
00:18Let's talk about the brawl.
00:20What did you do?
00:20Break down this brawl to me, please.
00:24There's not much to break down, right?
00:26So listen, Jonathan Quick, he's upset.
00:30There's no doubt about it.
00:31He's frustrated.
00:31He makes a 40-save night.
00:33His best game probably is a Ranger in three years with the Rangers.
00:37And he's the reason why they were even in this game, right?
00:40And he'd been fired up by some questionable, you know,
00:44refereeing earlier in the game anyway.
00:47So he's on the bench.
00:48Rangers, you know, have going for the extra attacker goal,
00:50trying to tie the game.
00:51Boom, buzzer sounds.
00:53Rangers lose 2-1.
00:54And as the buzzer's sounding, maybe a little bit afterwards,
00:57Mason Appleton sends the puck towards the empty net and into the empty net.
01:01And I know it.
01:02It's an unwritten rule.
01:03You shouldn't be doing that.
01:05But it was really close to the buzzer.
01:07I don't know.
01:08I didn't think it was a big deal, but I get it.
01:09Jonathan Quick's an old school guy.
01:11He comes firing off the bench and he was hot.
01:15And yeah, he was looking for a piece of Appleton.
01:17So Dylan Larkin stepped in his way instead.
01:20So he took a piece of Dylan Larkin and, you know, all the team,
01:23all the players from the teams converged on the ice.
01:26And, you know, I know the headline says brawl, but, you know,
01:28really not much ado about nothing.
01:31Nothing really took, you know, took place.
01:33Nothing got out of hand.
01:34But yeah, little, little fun sidebar to the story of another Ranger loss
01:40on home ice last night.
01:41So you think because of that, and again, like you said,
01:45another Rangers loss on home ice,
01:48do you think that's kind of Jonathan Quick's way of trying to fire up his
01:52squad?
01:54So I don't know if he did it to try and fire up the squad.
01:56I think he was really angry.
01:58Like he wasn't faking it.
02:00That wasn't an act, right?
02:01You know, Academy Award for him.
02:02He was hot, but, you know, he was asked specifically after the game,
02:08was this just about the incident Appleton, you know,
02:12unwritten rules, send it towards the empty net a little bit after the buzzer.
02:16Again, this wasn't like five, 10 seconds after the buzzer is a tick or two
02:19after the buzzer.
02:21And, or is it, you were so frustrated, you stood on your head,
02:25you gave your team every chance to win this game and they didn't take
02:29advantage of it.
02:30And you lost another heartbreaker at the garden.
02:32And he said, Nope, there are two separate issues at play here.
02:36I think human emotion, right?
02:37Again, I think part of it is, yeah, he's angry at Appleton,
02:42but I think there was a lot of frustration and maybe even a, you know,
02:45touch of disappointment and anger, you know,
02:48at his own team for not playing better last night.
02:51All right.
02:51So let's break down the actual game.
02:53We saw three game winning streak snapped.
02:56A lot of people on X are saying that that was the worst game.
02:58The Rangers have played all year.
03:00They did have the home game or the away game in Columbus the night before.
03:06So, I mean, kind of break the game down for us.
03:09Do you agree or disagree that that was the worst game they've played all year?
03:13Yeah, it wasn't great.
03:14Obviously, you know, you allow 42 shots on net and you're almost run out of your building,
03:20especially the second and third periods.
03:22I mean, Detroit owned the puck in the final two periods.
03:26Rangers just couldn't keep up with them skating wise.
03:30Their coaches after the game and the players as well spoke about puck mismanagement.
03:35You know, Rangers were turning the puck over a lot,
03:37especially trying to get through the neutral zone.
03:39And you caught the puck up in the neutral zone to a good skating team like Detroit,
03:44and they're going to come back at you in waves.
03:46But Detroit was winning puck battles as well in the Ranger end of the ice.
03:50And JT Miller, I thought, said it best.
03:52You know what?
03:53This game could have really gotten away from us if not for Jonathan Quick.
03:57And he was, make no mistake, he was that good last night.
04:01That is the best I've seen him in a Ranger uniform.
04:04And he's about to turn 40 years old soon, right?
04:07But he was terrific.
04:09As for your question, was it their worst loss of the season?
04:13It's up there for sure.
04:15I think it goes side by side with, ironically, a road loss in Calgary,
04:20the start of their road trip.
04:21Their only road loss of the season a couple weeks ago,
04:24that 5-1 loss to the Flames, who were just not a very good team.
04:28At least Detroit is a real playoff contender.
04:31So they're away for the next couple of games,
04:34but 1-7-1 at home this season.
04:36This team plays better on the road, as you just kind of alluded to.
04:40Do you think this team actually has what it takes to go on some sort of run
04:44and make the playoffs?
04:47Well, listen, you know, they just won, you know,
04:49what, seven out of their last nine games overall.
04:51And that's with only one of those wins coming at Madison Square Garden, right?
04:56It's going to be hard to keep up this 9-1-1 pace on the road.
05:01And they've got a difficult road trip coming up here.
05:04You know, it starts in Vegas, one of the best teams in the league.
05:06Then you actually play the best team in the league.
05:09You're in Denver to play the Colorado Avalanche,
05:11who've lost only one game in regulation this year.
05:14And then it closes out against the Utah Mammoth,
05:17who are seen out of the three as maybe the weak sister of the three.
05:20But yet, you know, they have a better points percentage
05:22than the Rangers this season.
05:24And they're contending for a playoff spot, too.
05:26So it's not going to be easy.
05:28Rangers really need to come out of this with, I think,
05:32at least winning two out of three.
05:35December is going to be the big, big challenge for the Rangers.
05:39Six of their first eight games in that month are at Madison Square Garden.
05:42So they've got to get healthy at home.
05:44I spoke with Neil Smith, the former Stanley Cup winning GM of the Rangers,
05:48and he said when things go bad at the Garden,
05:51it's a tough, terrible place to play
05:53because it becomes a snake pit.
05:55And he's concerned that that has really built a negative momentum
05:59for the team on home ice this year.
06:02All right, Jim, we appreciate that, man.
06:04Appreciate you coming on with us.
06:05We'll be talking to you soon.
06:07Thanks, Brandon.
