The Common Sense Bible Study crew discusses Proverbs 20 and themes of hidden motives and unbalanced scales. Everything is good if used according to its divinely intended purpose. Alcohol, government, sex, etc. The real problems come in when these things are unbalanced or in the wrong context.

00:00:00All right, we're talking about Proverbs 20, and I put the subtitle of Hidden Motives and Unbalanced Scales because these are two themes that appear over and over in the Proverbs in this chapter, whether it's the motives of somebody else, the motives of yourself that you don't understand, and unbalanced scales, not just in the economic and commerce sense, but in all areas of life.
00:00:29Finding the right balance in finances, in your food and drink, in your daily habits. Everything has its purpose, and everything is good if used in the correct way for the correct purposes.
00:00:45So, in our four questions, what speaks to you, what puzzles you, what surprises you, and what offends you?
00:01:15But a man of understanding will draw it out. Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find.
00:01:24The righteous who walks in his integrity, blessed are his children after him.
00:01:28The king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes.
00:01:33Who can say, I have made my heart pure, I am clean from my sin?
00:01:37Unequal weights and unequal measures are both alike in abomination to the Lord.
00:01:41Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright.
00:01:47The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both.
00:01:51Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread.
00:01:56Bad, bad, says the buyer, but when he goes away, then he boasts.
00:02:00There is gold and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
00:02:04Take a man's garment when he has put up security for a stranger, and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for foreigners.
00:02:12Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel.
00:02:18Plans are established by counsel, but wise guidance, by wise guidance, wage war.
00:02:24Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, therefore do not associate with a simple babbler.
00:02:29If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.
00:02:35An inheritance gained hastily in the beginning will not be blessed in the end.
00:02:39Do not say, I will repay evil. Wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.
00:02:44Unequal weights are an abomination to the Lord, and false scales are not good.
00:02:49A man's steps are from the Lord. How, then, can man understand his way?
00:02:53It is a snare to say rashly it is holy, and to reflect only after making vows.
00:03:00A wise king winnows the wicked and drives the wheel over them.
00:03:03The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.
00:03:09Steadfast love and faithfulness preserve the king, and by steadfast love his throne is upheld.
00:03:14The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.
00:03:19Blows that wound, cleanse away evil. Strokes make clean the innermost parts.
00:03:26Verses 1 and 2.
00:03:27When you first look at these verses, you might not see the connection.
00:03:32But I believe that these two verses are a deliberate parallelism,
00:03:36both comparing and contrasting wine and the king or government, you know, alcohol and government.
00:03:43You know, there's a famous saying.
00:03:45One of the founding fathers said that government is like, essentially, it's a great servant and a fearful master.
00:03:53I'm sure it was more eloquent in the original.
00:03:56But I think that that's very similar to what is being said in these two verses.
00:04:01I'll show you what I mean.
00:04:02Here's how I believe that this parallelism works out.
00:04:06A scoffer is wine.
00:04:08Notice that the word order here is a little different than what I read in the English Standard Version.
00:04:14And what I did is I went back to the Hebrew and rearranged the words in the original word order in the Hebrew.
00:04:21So a scoffer is wine.
00:04:23He is paired with roaring of a lion.
00:04:25A brawler is a liquor.
00:04:26Paired with terror of a king.
00:04:28Whoever goes astray connects with whoever crosses him.
00:04:32And doesn't get wisdom connects with forfeits his life.
00:04:36Now, let me show you the text and show you how I came up with that word order in.
00:04:43OK, so here's the King James with the Strong's Index numbers listed next to it.
00:04:48So let me find my Bible again.
00:04:51And OK, so King James with the Strong's numbers.
00:04:56If you're not aware of this or if you don't remember from the Chiasm course,
00:05:00Strong's index numbers are essentially an index of every Hebrew and Greek word that was used in the manuscripts that were used to translate the King James Bible.
00:05:10They're almost identical to the same manuscripts that are used to translate the English Standard and the NIV and all these other translations.
00:05:20There are some minor differences, but they're essentially the same.
00:05:23And at least in ESWORD, if you hover over that index number, you get the Strong's Concordance Dictionary or the Strong's Concordance Definition.
00:05:34It's not always the best definition, but you can click on it and get to the Brown and Driver Briggs, which is much better for Hebrew or the Thayer's Greek Dictionary for the New Testament.
00:05:45So anyways, wine is H3196, and you can see how I copied these numbers over here.
00:05:53So let me go to the Hebrew Old Testament, and you don't necessarily even need to know Hebrew to be able to take advantage of this feature in ESWORD because it puts that Strong's number right next to each Hebrew word so you can see where it falls in the verse.
00:06:08And this is great for validating a chiasm or a parallelism.
00:06:12So looking at those Hebrew words, you can see how the first word in the Hebrew—remember, Hebrew goes from right to left instead of left to right—the first word is H3887, which is actually not the first word in the King James.
00:06:28It's actually the second word.
00:06:30So we'll take that word, maker, and then 3196 is wine, and 1993 is raging.
00:06:40Let me fix that spacing.
00:06:4379.41, or rather, I'm looking at the Hebrew.
00:06:4779.41, yeah, is strong drink or raging, strong drink.
00:06:54And in the Hebrew over here, this is where I'm at now.
00:06:59So in the Hebrew, it's 3605.
00:07:02At the end of that line is the next word, and that is whosoever.
00:07:08And 7686 in King James, that's translated as deceived.
00:07:14But if you look at the Brown Driver Briggs, to go astray, to err, to meander, to lead astray.
00:07:25So it can mean deceived, or it can mean just to go astray.
00:07:29And I think astray is better, and you'll see why.
00:07:33Back to the Hebrew, 3808 is not, or is not, and 2449 is wise.
00:07:45So that's how I got this word order.
00:07:50Pull that up.
00:07:52This is the Hebrew word order.
00:07:54Mocker, wine, raging, strong drink, whosoever stray is not wise.
00:08:00So you can see kind of where I got this word order over here.
00:08:03I'm not going to go through verse 2, because that's kind of tedious.
00:08:06But if you look at verse 1, a scoffer is wine.
00:08:10Kind of sounds like Yoda, but essentially it means that wine is a scoffer.
00:08:16This is something that wine is saying.
00:08:17Scoffing is mocking or making fun of something.
00:08:21So wine scoffs, lions roar.
00:08:24Liquor is a brawler.
00:08:25That's something that it does or does to you.
00:08:28It makes you fight, or it fights you.
00:08:31Terror of a king, and this is something that a king does to you.
00:08:34It inspires terror.
00:08:36Both of these are some, like, an emotional reaction.
00:08:40Liquor is a brawler.
00:08:41It can also be translated as liquor or strong drink is a rager or causes rage.
00:08:48And then whoever goes astray, whoever crosses him,
00:08:52we can look at the definitions for that real quick.
00:08:54This book in verse 2 says,
00:09:01whoever provokes him to anger, but that's all just one word in Hebrew,
00:09:05and it's a bar, which means to pass over, to alienate,
00:09:09to pass away, to be crossed.
00:09:12So what I think it's talking about there is,
00:09:15it is talking about making him angry,
00:09:17but literally it's about crossing him the wrong way.
00:09:20So whoever goes astray and whoever crosses him,
00:09:24both the same kind of idea.
00:09:26It's a person who is going the wrong direction.
00:09:29And in verse 1, doesn't get wisdom.
00:09:32And in verse 2, forfeits his life.
00:09:34In both cases, it's something that you lose.
00:09:36You could have gotten, but you lost.
00:09:38Or that you could have had, but you lost.
00:09:40And that's why I think that these two verses are a deliberate parallelism.
00:09:45They're not just placed here randomly,
00:09:46but they are structured this way
00:09:48so that we will make a connection between the two verses.
00:09:52And you can think the same thing about fire.
00:09:54Fire will harm you if you use it incorrectly.
00:09:58Alcohol will harm you if you use it incorrectly.
00:10:02Government will harm you if you use it incorrectly.
00:10:04All three of these are the same basic principle.
00:10:08And all things are good if they are used in their proper context.
00:10:14And Paul even talks about this,
00:10:16that he's convinced that there's nothing unclean in itself.
00:10:20And what he means is not ritually unclean
00:10:22for use in the temple or at the altar
00:10:26because God says otherwise.
00:10:27What he means is that everything has a purpose.
00:10:31Everything is fit for the use for which God created it.
00:10:37And Proverbs elsewhere talks about some of the proper uses of alcohol.
00:10:41And Yeshua created alcohol at the wedding in Cana.
00:10:46This is something that God created for a purpose.
00:10:50And it can be used socially.
00:10:52It can be used medicinally.
00:10:53But what it should never be used as
00:10:55is something to make you feel
00:10:59like you don't have to fix your problems.
00:11:01Something to escape from your problems.
00:11:04Because that's when you're going to go astray.
00:11:06It's not the alcohol itself.
00:11:08It's the misuse of the alcohol that is the problem.
00:11:11And I think that everything that exists
00:11:13exists on a spectrum of hazard.
00:11:17Everything is dangerous in its way.
00:11:20Cars are great things.
00:11:22But if you misuse it,
00:11:23you're going to get hurt.
00:11:24You're going to hurt somebody else.
00:11:26Fire is a great thing.
00:11:27But if you play with fire,
00:11:28if you light the wrong things on fire,
00:11:31you're going to get hurt.
00:11:32And you're going to destroy things.
00:11:34If you approach a king in the wrong way,
00:11:36or a judge,
00:11:37or a mayor,
00:11:38or any person with power and authority over you,
00:11:41if you approach them in the wrong way
00:11:43so that you offend them,
00:11:45this could hurt you.
00:11:46It could destroy your life.
00:11:48It could cost you whatever it is
00:11:49that you're trying to get from the government.
00:11:51It doesn't really matter if it's fair or not.
00:11:53It's just the way the world works.
00:11:54Paula, I'm curious if you have any thoughts on this,
00:11:58anything you want to add.
00:11:59And whenever I take a breath,
00:12:01if there's something you want to add,
00:12:02feel free to jump in.
00:12:04Yeah, because you talk so much.
00:12:06It's the coffee.
00:12:08See, now there's a substance
00:12:09that if misused can cause problems.
00:12:10If misused,
00:12:11but you're not misusing it.
00:12:14No, I think it's really interesting,
00:12:17the parallel between verse one and verse two,
00:12:20and how that works out
00:12:21when you really look at the original Hebrew,
00:12:25it's just what you've said is true.
00:12:29It's important to understand.
00:12:32And I think that,
00:12:33yeah, I mean,
00:12:34I think what you said about it,
00:12:35just pointing out,
00:12:36you know,
00:12:37the misuse issue is really,
00:12:39is totally valid.
00:12:41Because wine on its own can't do anything.
00:12:44And it doesn't do anything
00:12:48unless you drink it.
00:12:49So you have to like,
00:12:51choose how you're going to drink it.
00:12:53Yeah.
00:12:53And drinking in the wrong time
00:12:55or the wrong place
00:12:56with the wrong people
00:12:57and the wrong volume,
00:12:59all of those things contribute
00:13:00to whether it's going to be a problem or not.
00:13:02It's true with everything
00:13:03that you put into your body,
00:13:04you know, with food.
00:13:06I mean, this is more your specialty,
00:13:08but sugar or even meat
00:13:11or vegetables even.
00:13:13And if you eat too much
00:13:14at the wrong time
00:13:16and the wrong balance,
00:13:18you're going to cause problems for yourself.
00:13:21Yeah.
00:13:21I do think it's interesting
00:13:22if you think about
00:13:24wine being a scoffer,
00:13:26a brawler,
00:13:27if you go astray,
00:13:29you don't get wisdom.
00:13:32And then you look at the
00:13:33lion,
00:13:35the essentially government,
00:13:39there's something
00:13:41that I was thinking about
00:13:42in terms of the emotional connection
00:13:44around this
00:13:46and how
00:13:48if wine is something
00:13:50that you have
00:13:51easier access to it.
00:13:53Yeah, that's true.
00:13:55The thing about the king,
00:13:56you don't necessarily have
00:13:58easy access to a king,
00:14:00but if we're thinking about this
00:14:01from a spiritual standpoint,
00:14:02then we're looking at this
00:14:04as Yeshua
00:14:05or God even,
00:14:08then it's like
00:14:09a different
00:14:10kind of access
00:14:11and this idea
00:14:12that if we
00:14:14cross the king
00:14:15or if we
00:14:16look at
00:14:17wine as a scoffer,
00:14:19if it goes astray,
00:14:21he doesn't get wisdom.
00:14:22There's also this question
00:14:24of
00:14:24if we're
00:14:26obedient to the king,
00:14:27then
00:14:29maybe we get wisdom
00:14:31just because
00:14:33we're talking about
00:14:33parallels here
00:14:35and it's like,
00:14:36yes,
00:14:36we would lose our life
00:14:37if we cross him,
00:14:38but
00:14:38we also
00:14:40could gain wisdom
00:14:41if we don't.
00:14:42So there's kind of
00:14:43this application
00:14:44when you look back
00:14:46at
00:14:46one
00:14:47that
00:14:48from the positive
00:14:50standpoint,
00:14:50you could look at this
00:14:51and say,
00:14:52oh yeah,
00:14:52you could get wisdom
00:14:53and keep your life.
00:14:55Yeah,
00:14:56and you have to
00:14:57pay attention to
00:14:58how powerful
00:14:59one of these things is.
00:15:01You know,
00:15:01alcohol
00:15:01is not nearly
00:15:03as dangerous
00:15:04as a king.
00:15:06Not that it won't
00:15:07ruin your life,
00:15:08but it's not going
00:15:08to cut your head off.
00:15:10It's not going to put you
00:15:11in front of a firing squad,
00:15:12at least not right away.
00:15:13It could
00:15:13lead you to make decisions
00:15:15that put you there.
00:15:17For example,
00:15:18if you abuse alcohol,
00:15:19you may end up
00:15:20in trouble with the government,
00:15:21but you have to
00:15:22weigh
00:15:23whatever it is
00:15:25you're talking about,
00:15:26whether it's
00:15:26sugar or coffee
00:15:27or alcohol
00:15:28or government,
00:15:31you have to weigh
00:15:32the potential consequences
00:15:33of misusing it
00:15:34and how quick
00:15:35are those consequences.
00:15:38And
00:15:38sometimes
00:15:39the consequences,
00:15:42you know,
00:15:42the time lag
00:15:43between
00:15:43the
00:15:44cause and effect
00:15:46can be deceiving.
00:15:49For example,
00:15:50if I do something
00:15:51today
00:15:51that's going
00:15:52to get me
00:15:53in trouble
00:15:53with the government,
00:15:54but they don't
00:15:54find out
00:15:55for, you know,
00:15:5610 years down the road,
00:15:57it could destroy
00:15:58my life then
00:15:58and I might think
00:15:59that I've gotten
00:16:00away with it.
00:16:01And the same thing
00:16:02happens with alcohol
00:16:03or drugs
00:16:03or anything else.
00:16:05You can
00:16:06do a little today
00:16:08and that's maybe
00:16:09not a problem.
00:16:10And for most people,
00:16:11it's not.
00:16:12It's just fine.
00:16:13But
00:16:14it can kind of
00:16:15creep up on you
00:16:16and you
00:16:16have to know
00:16:17yourself,
00:16:17you have to
00:16:18know your
00:16:18circumstances,
00:16:19how much
00:16:20can you
00:16:20handle?
00:16:21And really
00:16:21it takes
00:16:22time and
00:16:22wisdom to
00:16:23figure that
00:16:23kind of
00:16:23thing out
00:16:24with everything.
00:16:25You know,
00:16:26some things
00:16:26are obvious.
00:16:27I mean,
00:16:28there are
00:16:28some drugs
00:16:29that nobody
00:16:30should ever
00:16:30take because
00:16:31there's no
00:16:31good reason
00:16:32to.
00:16:33But when
00:16:34you also
00:16:34apply that
00:16:36to verse
00:16:36two and
00:16:38you think
00:16:38about breaking
00:16:40little laws,
00:16:42that could add
00:16:43up,
00:16:43that could
00:16:43become a
00:16:44problem.
00:16:45you think
00:16:47about the
00:16:48commandments
00:16:49and you
00:16:49think about
00:16:50like just
00:16:50breaking the
00:16:51little ones,
00:16:52maybe not
00:16:52breaking the
00:16:53big ones.
00:16:54But then
00:16:55eventually it
00:16:56becomes part
00:16:56of your
00:16:57character.
00:16:58Yeah.
00:16:59And then
00:16:59you're in
00:17:00big trouble.
00:17:02You can
00:17:02still apply
00:17:03the same
00:17:04principle
00:17:05behind the
00:17:07actions you
00:17:08could be
00:17:09taking in
00:17:09verse two
00:17:10toward
00:17:11government
00:17:12and not
00:17:14feel the
00:17:14consequences
00:17:15right away.
00:17:16But I
00:17:17think we
00:17:17all have
00:17:18experience
00:17:19probably with
00:17:21alcohol to
00:17:21know that
00:17:22like you
00:17:23experience
00:17:23the pros
00:17:26and cons
00:17:26pretty quickly
00:17:27and it's
00:17:29very personal.
00:17:30You know,
00:17:31there's a huge
00:17:31difference.
00:17:32So it's kind
00:17:33of an interesting
00:17:33thing to have
00:17:34it paralleled
00:17:35one against
00:17:36the other
00:17:36because it
00:17:37really is
00:17:37something that
00:17:38they can
00:17:40affect you
00:17:40in a couple
00:17:42different ways
00:17:43character
00:17:43wise and
00:17:45they can
00:17:45slowly build
00:17:46into something
00:17:46bigger but
00:17:47also that
00:17:48you don't
00:17:49necessarily
00:17:50like with
00:17:52sin you
00:17:53don't
00:17:53necessarily
00:17:53see the
00:17:54consequences
00:17:55right away.
00:17:57And you
00:17:58could be doing
00:17:59it habitually
00:17:59before you
00:18:00really see
00:18:00that.
00:18:02Yeah.
00:18:02Yeah.
00:18:02And with
00:18:04sin there's
00:18:04no there's
00:18:05no good
00:18:05level of
00:18:06sin.
00:18:06There's
00:18:07no right
00:18:07this much
00:18:08is okay
00:18:09and this
00:18:09but I
00:18:10won't go
00:18:11past this.
00:18:12There's no
00:18:12point like
00:18:13that with
00:18:13sin.
00:18:13All sin
00:18:14is bad.
00:18:15Now of
00:18:15course some
00:18:16sins are
00:18:16definitely
00:18:17worse than
00:18:17others because
00:18:18of how it
00:18:18impacts you
00:18:19or the
00:18:19people around
00:18:20you.
00:18:21Can't remember
00:18:21exactly where
00:18:22I was going
00:18:22with that but
00:18:23you know
00:18:23alcohol on
00:18:24the other
00:18:24hand is
00:18:25you have
00:18:26to know
00:18:27yourself and
00:18:28you have to
00:18:28know what
00:18:29its what
00:18:29its effects
00:18:30are.
00:18:31There is an
00:18:32appropriate time
00:18:33and place
00:18:34to drink
00:18:36alcohol.
00:18:37I mean I
00:18:37know I
00:18:38probably get
00:18:38myself into
00:18:39trouble with
00:18:39some people
00:18:39saying that but
00:18:40it's just the
00:18:41fact.
00:18:42There's no
00:18:42commandment in
00:18:43scripture against
00:18:44drinking but
00:18:45it really comes
00:18:46down to you
00:18:48have to know
00:18:49the substance
00:18:49and you have
00:18:50to know
00:18:50yourself.
00:18:52And there's
00:18:53no hard and
00:18:54fast line saying
00:18:55this much is
00:18:56okay and this
00:18:56much is not.
00:18:57That's why you
00:18:58have to know
00:18:58yourself and
00:19:00what its effects
00:19:00are on you.
00:19:01If you're the
00:19:02kind of person
00:19:03who is easily
00:19:04addicted to
00:19:05substances if
00:19:06you are easily
00:19:08affected if
00:19:09you know you
00:19:09make bad
00:19:10decisions when
00:19:10you drink then
00:19:12maybe you
00:19:12shouldn't drink
00:19:12at all.
00:19:14But you
00:19:14know on the
00:19:15other hand
00:19:15there are
00:19:16people who
00:19:16alcohol helps
00:19:18them sometimes.
00:19:20People like
00:19:21me who may
00:19:21have some
00:19:22trouble in
00:19:22social situations
00:19:23a drink may
00:19:25really make
00:19:27that a whole
00:19:27lot easier and
00:19:28less stressful.
00:19:29But even
00:19:31then you always
00:19:32have to be
00:19:32careful because
00:19:33it's so
00:19:34easy.
00:19:35Like I
00:19:36said there's
00:19:36no solid
00:19:37line that
00:19:37says this
00:19:38is enough
00:19:39and this
00:19:39is too
00:19:39much.
00:19:41And once
00:19:41you start
00:19:42down the
00:19:44path of
00:19:45softening your
00:19:47ability to
00:19:48make sound
00:19:48decisions,
00:19:50how will you
00:19:50even know when
00:19:51you reach that
00:19:51point?
00:19:53It's good to
00:19:53have people
00:19:53around you who
00:19:54are willing and
00:19:55able to point
00:19:56it out and
00:19:57you have to be
00:19:57able to listen
00:19:57to them too.
00:19:59Have I gone
00:20:00too far?
00:20:00That kind
00:20:01of thing.
00:20:02All right,
00:20:02let's move
00:20:03on.
00:20:04Verse 3,
00:20:07it is an
00:20:07honor for a
00:20:08man to keep
00:20:09aloof from
00:20:09strife that
00:20:10every fool
00:20:11will be
00:20:11quarreling.
00:20:12This applies
00:20:13in all
00:20:14realms of
00:20:15life,
00:20:15politics,
00:20:16sports,
00:20:17religion,
00:20:17philosophy,
00:20:19teaching
00:20:19things,
00:20:20imparting
00:20:20knowledge to
00:20:21people,
00:20:22and being
00:20:24a peacemaker.
00:20:25These things
00:20:26are good and
00:20:27honorable.
00:20:27on the
00:20:29other side,
00:20:30hostile
00:20:31debate,
00:20:32always picking
00:20:32a fight,
00:20:33being a
00:20:33troll,
00:20:34creating
00:20:34conflict.
00:20:35These things
00:20:36are dishonorable.
00:20:37Unless you're
00:20:38in a war
00:20:39trying to
00:20:40defend
00:20:41yourself,
00:20:42then there's
00:20:43almost never
00:20:45an honorable
00:20:45way to do
00:20:46that.
00:20:47It's going to
00:20:49cause problems
00:20:49in your
00:20:49relationships,
00:20:50of course.
00:20:51Verse 4,
00:20:53the slugger
00:20:53does not
00:20:54plow in the
00:20:54autumn.
00:20:55He will
00:20:55seek at
00:20:55harvest and
00:20:56have nothing.
00:20:57It seems
00:20:58pretty obvious,
00:20:59but this
00:21:00doesn't just
00:21:01apply to
00:21:01agriculture.
00:21:03This applies
00:21:04again in
00:21:04everything.
00:21:06There is,
00:21:07I think I've
00:21:08mentioned this
00:21:08before,
00:21:09but there's
00:21:09no such
00:21:09thing as
00:21:10an overnight
00:21:10success.
00:21:11People work
00:21:12for years
00:21:13and years
00:21:13and years
00:21:14and then
00:21:14all of a
00:21:15sudden
00:21:15everything
00:21:15explodes
00:21:16and nobody
00:21:17noticed them
00:21:17before that.
00:21:18They think
00:21:19of them
00:21:19as an
00:21:19overnight
00:21:20success,
00:21:21but really
00:21:21there's
00:21:22years of
00:21:22planning and
00:21:23work that
00:21:23went into
00:21:24that.
00:21:26This is
00:21:26the same
00:21:27with
00:21:27everything.
00:21:27If you
00:21:27want to
00:21:28have a
00:21:28productive
00:21:29and happy
00:21:29life,
00:21:30you start
00:21:31when you're
00:21:31a child.
00:21:32You start
00:21:33by honoring
00:21:34your parents,
00:21:34by learning
00:21:35the rules,
00:21:36learning how to
00:21:37be a friend
00:21:38and how to
00:21:39be honest,
00:21:40how to
00:21:41control
00:21:41yourself.
00:21:43Then later
00:21:45on in life,
00:21:45once you've
00:21:46done that,
00:21:46then those
00:21:47plans,
00:21:47they sprout,
00:21:49they bear
00:21:50fruit.
00:21:50I really
00:21:52can't think
00:21:52of any
00:21:53part of
00:21:54life where
00:21:55that doesn't
00:21:55apply.
00:21:57We were
00:21:57just talking
00:21:57about verse
00:21:58four,
00:22:00and the
00:22:00slugger does
00:22:01not plow
00:22:01in the
00:22:01autumn,
00:22:02and he'll
00:22:02seek at
00:22:03harvest and
00:22:03have nothing,
00:22:04and how this
00:22:05applies to
00:22:05long-term
00:22:06plans in
00:22:06life.
00:22:07You can't
00:22:09expect to
00:22:10have overnight
00:22:10success,
00:22:10just decide
00:22:11that something
00:22:12is going to
00:22:12happen and
00:22:13make it
00:22:13happen.
00:22:14You have
00:22:16to start
00:22:16from the
00:22:16beginning.
00:22:17Start when
00:22:17you're a
00:22:17child with
00:22:18honoring your
00:22:19parents and
00:22:20following the
00:22:21rules of
00:22:21society,
00:22:22learning how
00:22:22to be a
00:22:23friend and
00:22:23to be
00:22:23trustworthy,
00:22:25and learn
00:22:26how to
00:22:26work hard.
00:22:27Later in
00:22:27life,
00:22:28these things
00:22:29bear fruit.
00:22:30Plow the
00:22:31fields,
00:22:32plant your
00:22:32seeds and
00:22:33your youth
00:22:33so that you
00:22:34can have a
00:22:34good harvest
00:22:34in your
00:22:35old age.
00:22:36But that's
00:22:37not the way
00:22:38that our
00:22:38modern culture
00:22:38wants it
00:22:39to work.
00:22:40I was
00:22:41reading
00:22:41Proverbs
00:22:4222,
00:22:43this morning
00:22:44and there's
00:22:46some similar
00:22:47themes.
00:22:49I will have
00:22:50to go back
00:22:50and read
00:22:51this more
00:22:52in depth,
00:22:54but I pulled
00:22:55it up so
00:22:55now I can
00:22:56at least
00:22:56follow along
00:22:57with you
00:22:57guys.
00:22:58Okay.
00:22:59Yeah,
00:22:59there's a lot
00:23:00of repetition
00:23:00in the
00:23:01Proverbs.
00:23:02Frequently,
00:23:03the repeated
00:23:04proverb just
00:23:05takes a
00:23:06slightly different
00:23:06angle on
00:23:07something.
00:23:08For example,
00:23:09we've got
00:23:09two proverbs
00:23:10that say
00:23:11almost exactly
00:23:12the same
00:23:12thing in
00:23:13this chapter
00:23:13alone.
00:23:15Let's move
00:23:15on to
00:23:16verse 5.
00:23:18This is one
00:23:19that actually
00:23:19surprised me
00:23:20a little bit.
00:23:21The purpose
00:23:22in a man's
00:23:22heart is
00:23:23like deep
00:23:23water,
00:23:24but a man
00:23:24of understanding
00:23:25will draw
00:23:25it out.
00:23:28My first
00:23:29thought is
00:23:29deep water
00:23:31is dark,
00:23:33mysterious,
00:23:34you can't
00:23:35really see
00:23:35what's going
00:23:35on in
00:23:36there.
00:23:36so another
00:23:38person,
00:23:39it takes
00:23:40a person
00:23:40of discernment
00:23:41to be able
00:23:41to see
00:23:42what's
00:23:42motivating
00:23:44another
00:23:44person.
00:23:45That's
00:23:46totally
00:23:46true.
00:23:47I think
00:23:47that is
00:23:47what this
00:23:48proverb
00:23:48is saying,
00:23:49but you
00:23:51can also
00:23:51apply it
00:23:52to yourself.
00:23:53We all
00:23:54think that
00:23:54we know
00:23:55what we're
00:23:55doing and
00:23:55why,
00:23:56but frequently
00:23:57those motives
00:23:58are deep
00:23:59and obscure
00:24:00even to
00:24:00ourselves.
00:24:01and it
00:24:02takes
00:24:02somebody
00:24:03else to
00:24:04be able
00:24:04to point
00:24:04out to
00:24:05us why
00:24:05we're really
00:24:05doing what
00:24:06we're doing.
00:24:07And that
00:24:08can be
00:24:08difficult to
00:24:09accept and
00:24:10sometimes
00:24:10painful,
00:24:11but I think
00:24:12it happens
00:24:13at least as
00:24:13often as
00:24:14the other
00:24:14way around.
00:24:15It's funny,
00:24:16my husband
00:24:16used to be
00:24:17in law
00:24:18enforcement
00:24:18and did
00:24:19a lot
00:24:20of
00:24:20interrogations
00:24:22and interrogations
00:24:23of very
00:24:24high-profile
00:24:26cases,
00:24:27terrorists
00:24:28and different
00:24:29people that
00:24:30had a lot
00:24:31of,
00:24:33shall we
00:24:33say,
00:24:34probably
00:24:34conflicting
00:24:35motivations.
00:24:37And he
00:24:37would,
00:24:38my husband
00:24:38always said
00:24:39that there
00:24:41is no way
00:24:42to ever
00:24:43tell what
00:24:44somebody's
00:24:45true motivation
00:24:46is because
00:24:47they themselves
00:24:48don't even
00:24:48know what
00:24:49their true
00:24:49motivation is.
00:24:51There's just
00:24:51so much
00:24:52there that
00:24:53you can
00:24:54try and
00:24:55assess,
00:24:56but you
00:24:58on the
00:24:58outside
00:24:59are
00:24:59making
00:25:00a guess
00:25:01and really
00:25:02the person
00:25:02themselves
00:25:03doesn't
00:25:04know
00:25:04often
00:25:05what their
00:25:06true motivation
00:25:06is.
00:25:07So I
00:25:07wonder
00:25:08when this
00:25:09verse is
00:25:09saying
00:25:10a man
00:25:11of understanding
00:25:12will draw
00:25:12it out,
00:25:13is that
00:25:13saying that
00:25:14the person
00:25:16themselves,
00:25:18the man
00:25:18or woman
00:25:19whatever,
00:25:19themselves,
00:25:20is drawing
00:25:21it out
00:25:22for themselves?
00:25:24It could,
00:25:25yeah.
00:25:26That's not
00:25:27the way I
00:25:27took it,
00:25:27but yeah,
00:25:28I think that's
00:25:29a valid
00:25:29interpretation
00:25:29too.
00:25:31Just through
00:25:31some
00:25:32introspection
00:25:33and self
00:25:34assessment.
00:25:36Sometimes we
00:25:36really have
00:25:37to think
00:25:37about it.
00:25:38I mean,
00:25:38it's just
00:25:39odd because
00:25:39it says
00:25:40the purpose
00:25:40in a man's
00:25:41heart is
00:25:41like deep
00:25:42water,
00:25:42but a man
00:25:42of understanding
00:25:43will draw
00:25:44it out.
00:25:44So I
00:25:44was reading
00:25:46it as
00:25:46the characteristic
00:25:48of a person
00:25:50to seek
00:25:51understanding
00:25:51allows them
00:25:54to dig
00:25:55into their
00:25:55own motivation.
00:25:57That's good.
00:25:58I like
00:25:58it.
00:25:59Certainly
00:25:59it's true
00:26:00that an
00:26:01objective
00:26:01observer
00:26:02is often
00:26:03helpful,
00:26:04but if
00:26:05somebody
00:26:06is a
00:26:08man of
00:26:08understanding
00:26:09or a
00:26:09woman of
00:26:10understanding,
00:26:10are they
00:26:11then digging
00:26:12in for
00:26:13themselves
00:26:13because
00:26:14that's
00:26:15their
00:26:15characteristic?
00:26:16They seek
00:26:16understanding.
00:26:18Yeah,
00:26:18well,
00:26:18I think
00:26:19it's both.
00:26:19I think
00:26:20some people
00:26:21will be able
00:26:22to self
00:26:24analyze,
00:26:24self
00:26:25assess,
00:26:26and figure
00:26:27out why
00:26:27they're doing
00:26:28what they're
00:26:28doing or
00:26:29why they
00:26:29believe the
00:26:30way that
00:26:31they do.
00:26:32Other people
00:26:33will never
00:26:34be able to
00:26:34figure that
00:26:35out for
00:26:35themselves and
00:26:36will have to
00:26:36rely on
00:26:37other people.
00:26:38And there
00:26:39are some
00:26:39people,
00:26:40you know,
00:26:40actually,
00:26:41if you go
00:26:41down to
00:26:41verse 8,
00:26:42a king who
00:26:43sits on the
00:26:43throne of
00:26:44judgment,
00:26:44winnows all
00:26:45evil with
00:26:45his eyes.
00:26:47Of course,
00:26:47that's not all
00:26:48kings,
00:26:48not all rulers
00:26:49have that kind
00:26:49of discernment,
00:26:50but I think
00:26:51this is really
00:26:51what this is
00:26:52talking about,
00:26:53is that
00:26:53somebody who
00:26:55has a
00:26:57really deep
00:26:57understanding of
00:26:58human nature
00:26:59and other
00:26:59people will
00:27:01be able to
00:27:01look at
00:27:02somebody,
00:27:03even a
00:27:03stranger,
00:27:04and be able
00:27:05to understand
00:27:07a lot about
00:27:08where that
00:27:08person is
00:27:09coming from
00:27:09and why
00:27:10they're doing
00:27:10what they're
00:27:10doing,
00:27:11even if the
00:27:11other person
00:27:12doesn't know.
00:27:13You know,
00:27:13I used to
00:27:14work with a
00:27:14guy who
00:27:15was,
00:27:15he was a
00:27:17sheriff's deputy
00:27:17for many
00:27:18years,
00:27:18and then he
00:27:19worked for
00:27:19the FBI,
00:27:20he was an
00:27:20interrogator
00:27:21for the
00:27:22FBI,
00:27:23and he
00:27:24had a lot
00:27:25of practice
00:27:25at trying
00:27:27to figure
00:27:27out what
00:27:28was really
00:27:28going on
00:27:29with what
00:27:29somebody was
00:27:30saying and
00:27:30doing,
00:27:31and this
00:27:33was in
00:27:33IT,
00:27:34so he
00:27:35wasn't in
00:27:35that kind
00:27:36of role
00:27:36anymore.
00:27:36He had
00:27:37retired and
00:27:38changed
00:27:38careers,
00:27:39but I do
00:27:40remember having
00:27:40conversations
00:27:41with him,
00:27:42and he
00:27:42would look
00:27:43at me
00:27:43sideways and
00:27:44say,
00:27:44is that
00:27:44really what's
00:27:45going on?
00:27:46I'd have
00:27:47to stop
00:27:47and think
00:27:47because he
00:27:48was usually
00:27:48right that
00:27:49there was
00:27:49something
00:27:50else.
00:27:51I was
00:27:52doing
00:27:52something for
00:27:52some other
00:27:53reason than
00:27:53what I
00:27:54thought,
00:27:54or somebody
00:27:54else was
00:27:56doing
00:27:56something,
00:27:57but there
00:27:59are people
00:27:59who have
00:27:59that kind
00:28:00of discernment.
00:28:00I'm not
00:28:01necessarily
00:28:01one of
00:28:02them,
00:28:02and I'm
00:28:04not really
00:28:04sure if I
00:28:04want to
00:28:05be,
00:28:05because I
00:28:05like giving
00:28:06people the
00:28:06benefit of
00:28:07the doubt.
00:28:08Sometimes that
00:28:09comes back to
00:28:09bite me.
00:28:10do you
00:28:11think that
00:28:12reading
00:28:14scripture
00:28:15can help
00:28:16us better
00:28:19understand our
00:28:20own motivations,
00:28:20or at
00:28:21least somehow
00:28:23be more
00:28:24introspective?
00:28:25I've been
00:28:26thinking about
00:28:26that because
00:28:27I've been
00:28:27reading so
00:28:28much recently,
00:28:29and I feel
00:28:31more introspective
00:28:32now just by
00:28:34virtue of
00:28:35reading scripture
00:28:36that has
00:28:37nothing,
00:28:39the stories
00:28:39that have
00:28:40nothing to
00:28:40do with
00:28:41me per
00:28:41se,
00:28:42but then
00:28:42I'm
00:28:44analyzing
00:28:44what's
00:28:45happening,
00:28:45or what
00:28:46the scripture
00:28:47is saying,
00:28:47and then I'm
00:28:48reflecting on
00:28:48my own
00:28:49life.
00:28:50I wonder
00:28:50if that's
00:28:51one of the
00:28:52qualities of
00:28:52seeking
00:28:53understanding,
00:28:54is just
00:28:54seeking
00:28:56truth in
00:28:57scripture,
00:28:58if that
00:28:59helps us
00:28:59be more
00:29:00aligned.
00:29:01I'm sure it
00:29:01does.
00:29:02What are
00:29:03our motivations?
00:29:04Why are we
00:29:04doing what
00:29:04we're doing?
00:29:06That's one
00:29:06of the
00:29:07things that
00:29:07Solomon says
00:29:08over and
00:29:08over in
00:29:08the Proverbs
00:29:09is that
00:29:10studying the
00:29:11scriptures and
00:29:12doing what
00:29:13they say
00:29:14will create
00:29:15more wisdom
00:29:16and more
00:29:16understanding
00:29:17in the
00:29:17people who
00:29:18are doing
00:29:19the studying
00:29:19and obeying.
00:29:22Especially,
00:29:24I think,
00:29:25there's some
00:29:26level of
00:29:27understanding you
00:29:27can get just
00:29:28from studying
00:29:29God's
00:29:30instructions to
00:29:30his people.
00:29:32You'll get
00:29:32another level
00:29:33of understanding
00:29:34by actually
00:29:34doing those
00:29:35things.
00:29:35And then
00:29:36coming to
00:29:37something like
00:29:37Proverbs and
00:29:38Ecclesiastes,
00:29:39the wisdom
00:29:39literature,
00:29:41and reading
00:29:42them through
00:29:43very carefully
00:29:43and meditating
00:29:45on what
00:29:45these things
00:29:46mean and
00:29:47how they
00:29:47connect to
00:29:47other passages
00:29:48in scripture,
00:29:49how they
00:29:49connect to
00:29:50various
00:29:50commandments
00:29:51and stories,
00:29:53I think
00:29:53that can't
00:29:54help but
00:29:55build a
00:29:56deeper level
00:29:56of understanding
00:29:57of human
00:29:57nature and
00:29:59understanding of
00:30:00other people
00:30:00and yourself.
00:30:02I think
00:30:02there's a lot
00:30:02of truth to
00:30:03that.
00:30:03I'm not
00:30:05familiar with
00:30:06Ecclesiastes,
00:30:07so tell me
00:30:08more on
00:30:08that front.
00:30:09Is that
00:30:09somehow,
00:30:10is that
00:30:11also a
00:30:12book that
00:30:14is relaying
00:30:15wisdom from
00:30:16one person
00:30:17to another?
00:30:18Well,
00:30:19it is,
00:30:21but it's
00:30:21really
00:30:22sort of
00:30:22Solomon's
00:30:23memoirs.
00:30:24You know,
00:30:25Proverbs is
00:30:25instruction
00:30:26mostly from
00:30:27a father
00:30:28to his
00:30:28sons.
00:30:29Ecclesiastes
00:30:30is the
00:30:30story of
00:30:31how Solomon
00:30:32got there,
00:30:32how he
00:30:33got his
00:30:33wisdom.
00:30:34And it's
00:30:36dark,
00:30:38existential,
00:30:39it's not
00:30:40a happy
00:30:42book.
00:30:42there's
00:30:43this story
00:30:44about how
00:30:46Solomon,
00:30:47you know,
00:30:47God came
00:30:47to Solomon
00:30:48and said,
00:30:49you know,
00:30:49ask me
00:30:49anything you
00:30:50want and
00:30:50I'll give
00:30:51it to you.
00:30:52And so
00:30:53Solomon said,
00:30:54you know,
00:30:54I don't want
00:30:55wealth,
00:30:56riches,
00:30:57all that kind
00:30:57of thing.
00:30:58I want
00:30:58wisdom to
00:30:59govern your
00:30:59people.
00:31:00And,
00:31:01you know,
00:31:01God replied
00:31:01with,
00:31:02well,
00:31:02that's great.
00:31:03And so I'm
00:31:04going to give
00:31:04you wisdom,
00:31:05but not only
00:31:05that,
00:31:05I'm also
00:31:06going to give
00:31:06you riches
00:31:06because you
00:31:07asked for
00:31:08such a wise
00:31:09gift.
00:31:10but I
00:31:12don't think
00:31:13that that
00:31:15God just
00:31:15zapped him
00:31:16with wisdom.
00:31:17He didn't
00:31:18just like
00:31:18wake up the
00:31:19next morning
00:31:19and he was
00:31:20the wisest
00:31:20man on
00:31:20earth.
00:31:21I think
00:31:22what God
00:31:22did was
00:31:23gave him
00:31:24some
00:31:24motivations
00:31:24and put
00:31:25him in
00:31:25situations
00:31:26where he
00:31:26would be
00:31:27forced to
00:31:27learn wisdom
00:31:28over time.
00:31:29And for
00:31:30the most
00:31:30part,
00:31:31people don't
00:31:32wisdom,
00:31:32don't learn
00:31:33wisdom from
00:31:34nice,
00:31:35happy events
00:31:36in their
00:31:36life.
00:31:37They learn
00:31:38wisdom from
00:31:38pain.
00:31:39And so
00:31:40the book
00:31:40of Ecclesiastes
00:31:41is probably
00:31:44the most
00:31:44existential
00:31:45and uncomfortable
00:31:46book in the
00:31:47Bible for
00:31:47Christians because
00:31:49it's pessimistic
00:31:51on many
00:31:52levels.
00:31:54And it's
00:31:54like,
00:31:54I've tried
00:31:55wine,
00:31:57I've tried
00:31:57women,
00:31:57I've tried
00:31:58all of these
00:31:58different
00:31:59experiences and
00:32:00nothing made
00:32:00me happy.
00:32:01Everything
00:32:01just made
00:32:02life worse.
00:32:04Meaningless,
00:32:04all is
00:32:05meaningless.
00:32:05That's how
00:32:06the book
00:32:06starts.
00:32:06But at
00:32:09the end,
00:32:09he says,
00:32:10here's what
00:32:10I've really
00:32:11learned from
00:32:11life.
00:32:12This is the
00:32:13whole duty
00:32:13of man,
00:32:14to fear
00:32:15God and
00:32:16keep the
00:32:16commandments.
00:32:18That's it.
00:32:19That's what
00:32:19Solomon learned
00:32:20through all
00:32:20his wisdom.
00:32:22So there
00:32:22is a lot
00:32:23of observations
00:32:24about human
00:32:25nature and
00:32:25life experiences
00:32:26in Ecclesiastes.
00:32:27And I think
00:32:28reading it,
00:32:28especially along
00:32:29the Proverbs,
00:32:31will,
00:32:32I mean,
00:32:32it can't help
00:32:32but develop a
00:32:33better understanding
00:32:34of human
00:32:35nature and
00:32:35the human
00:32:36experience.
00:32:38Does that
00:32:38all make
00:32:38sense?
00:32:39Yeah,
00:32:40that's so
00:32:40helpful.
00:32:42It actually
00:32:43sounds like a
00:32:43book that
00:32:44will resonate
00:32:44very profoundly
00:32:46with me.
00:32:47So that's
00:32:48great insight.
00:32:51Sure.
00:32:51You're welcome.
00:32:52So why don't
00:32:53we just
00:32:53continue on
00:32:54through here.
00:32:56Actually,
00:32:57we were on
00:32:57verse 5,
00:32:59the one we
00:33:00were just
00:33:00talking about.
00:33:00And I
00:33:02think verse
00:33:026 also
00:33:04connects with
00:33:04this proverb
00:33:05in the sense
00:33:06that,
00:33:07well,
00:33:07in both
00:33:08senses,
00:33:08you know,
00:33:09the purpose
00:33:09in a man's
00:33:11part is like
00:33:12deep water,
00:33:12but a man
00:33:13of understanding
00:33:13will draw it
00:33:14out.
00:33:15There's the
00:33:15one interpretation
00:33:16where it's
00:33:17the person
00:33:18doesn't know
00:33:19his own
00:33:19motivations.
00:33:21And so
00:33:21maybe he's
00:33:22got to go
00:33:22through some
00:33:23introspection
00:33:23or maybe he
00:33:24has to find
00:33:25somebody else
00:33:26to help him
00:33:26understand what's
00:33:27going on.
00:33:28There's also
00:33:29the other side
00:33:30where a person
00:33:31is hiding
00:33:31his motivations
00:33:32and it takes
00:33:34the discernment
00:33:34like the king
00:33:35in verse 8
00:33:35to understand
00:33:37what this
00:33:38person is
00:33:39really after.
00:33:40If you look
00:33:41at verse 6,
00:33:42many a man
00:33:43proclaims his
00:33:43own steadfast
00:33:44love,
00:33:45but a faithful
00:33:46man who can
00:33:46find.
00:33:47You have the
00:33:48exact same
00:33:49contrast.
00:33:50On the one
00:33:51hand,
00:33:51you have people
00:33:52who believe
00:33:52that they are
00:33:54showing love
00:33:56to the world.
00:33:57There's a
00:33:58preacher that I
00:33:59interact with
00:33:59on Twitter
00:34:00frequently and
00:34:02he's always
00:34:03talking about
00:34:03Christians need
00:34:04to show more
00:34:04love to the
00:34:07LGBTIA plus
00:34:08community,
00:34:09however many
00:34:11letters are in
00:34:11that acronym
00:34:12these days.
00:34:13And he takes
00:34:14this to the
00:34:15extreme of
00:34:16giving them
00:34:18full participation
00:34:19in his church,
00:34:20inviting them to
00:34:20lead worship,
00:34:21these things,
00:34:23and saying we
00:34:24have to invite
00:34:24them in to
00:34:25know Jesus.
00:34:26that's all
00:34:27great,
00:34:28but you
00:34:29also have to
00:34:30teach them
00:34:30to repent.
00:34:31You shouldn't
00:34:32be putting
00:34:32them up leading
00:34:33worship.
00:34:34They shouldn't
00:34:34be taking
00:34:34leadership roles.
00:34:36People who
00:34:36are in such
00:34:38flagrant disregard
00:34:39of God's
00:34:40instructions about
00:34:41how to live,
00:34:42we should not
00:34:43be elevating
00:34:44them.
00:34:44We certainly
00:34:45should be being
00:34:46kind and be
00:34:48good to them.
00:34:49We don't have
00:34:50to be mean,
00:34:50but we
00:34:52also don't
00:34:52have to
00:34:53pander to
00:34:53them.
00:34:54So this
00:34:56preacher,
00:34:56he believes
00:34:58that he is
00:34:58showing these
00:34:59people love,
00:35:00and to a
00:35:00certain extent
00:35:01he is,
00:35:01but he's
00:35:02going so
00:35:03far that
00:35:04he's actually
00:35:04causing them
00:35:05more harm
00:35:05than good.
00:35:06By accepting
00:35:07them and not
00:35:08urging them
00:35:09to change
00:35:10how they
00:35:10live,
00:35:12he's actually
00:35:12being hateful
00:35:13to them in
00:35:14his motive,
00:35:15in his intent
00:35:16to be love,
00:35:16to be loving,
00:35:17sorry.
00:35:19And so on
00:35:19the other side,
00:35:20you've got
00:35:20somebody who
00:35:21claims to be
00:35:22loving,
00:35:23but knows
00:35:23he's not.
00:35:24He's just
00:35:24disingenuous
00:35:25about it.
00:35:26I mean,
00:35:26this other
00:35:26preacher,
00:35:27he's not
00:35:28being dishonest.
00:35:29He believes
00:35:29that he's
00:35:30doing the
00:35:30right thing,
00:35:30at least
00:35:31I'm pretty
00:35:31sure he
00:35:31does.
00:35:32But there
00:35:33are other
00:35:33people who
00:35:34I don't
00:35:35believe for
00:35:36a moment
00:35:36believe that
00:35:38they are
00:35:38doing the
00:35:38right thing.
00:35:40They are
00:35:40preaching love
00:35:42or preaching
00:35:43prosperity or
00:35:44whatever it is
00:35:45that they're
00:35:45doing.
00:35:45Maybe they're
00:35:46not even
00:35:46Christians.
00:35:48They are
00:35:48preaching about
00:35:50love,
00:35:50telling other
00:35:51people we
00:35:52have to
00:35:52love and
00:35:52accept and
00:35:53do whatever,
00:35:54but they have
00:35:55an ulterior
00:35:55motive.
00:35:56They want to
00:35:56use these
00:35:57other people
00:35:57for their
00:35:58own personal
00:35:58gain.
00:35:59And certainly
00:36:00you can look
00:36:00at politics
00:36:01and I think
00:36:02you can look
00:36:03at a lot of
00:36:03prosperity
00:36:04preachers to
00:36:05see this
00:36:05kind of
00:36:06behavior.
00:36:07These people
00:36:07are snakes
00:36:08and wolves.
00:36:09They're not
00:36:09just misguided.
00:36:11They are the
00:36:12misguiders.
00:36:13So I
00:36:14think verse
00:36:14five and
00:36:15six go
00:36:15hand in
00:36:15hand,
00:36:16describing the
00:36:16same sort
00:36:17of dichotomy
00:36:18between the
00:36:19person who
00:36:20doesn't know
00:36:20himself and
00:36:21the person
00:36:21who does
00:36:21know himself
00:36:22and is
00:36:23hiding.
00:36:24Brad has
00:36:24shared a
00:36:25video that
00:36:26posited that
00:36:28motivation is
00:36:30king over
00:36:32action.
00:36:35And I
00:36:36didn't agree
00:36:37with that.
00:36:38And I think
00:36:38you're touching
00:36:38on that right
00:36:39now because
00:36:41the motivation
00:36:41of the
00:36:44pastor that
00:36:45you're talking
00:36:46about sounds
00:36:47honorable,
00:36:47but the
00:36:49result is
00:36:51actually
00:36:52detrimental in
00:36:53my opinion.
00:36:55You know,
00:36:55I think that
00:36:56really it goes
00:36:58hand in hand.
00:36:59I mean,
00:37:00yes,
00:37:00you want to
00:37:00have proper
00:37:01motivation for
00:37:02what you're
00:37:02doing,
00:37:02but you also
00:37:03want to have
00:37:03action that
00:37:04is reasonable
00:37:06and responsible.
00:37:07Yeah.
00:37:08Yeah,
00:37:09I think that's
00:37:09that's right.
00:37:10And there
00:37:11are times
00:37:12when I think
00:37:12motivation counts
00:37:14more than what
00:37:15you're actually
00:37:15doing.
00:37:16But if what
00:37:18you're doing
00:37:18is, you
00:37:20know, blatant
00:37:20disregard of
00:37:21God's instructions,
00:37:21I'm not really
00:37:23sure how your
00:37:24motives can
00:37:24possibly be
00:37:25good.
00:37:27I mean,
00:37:27you might have
00:37:28convinced yourself
00:37:29that your
00:37:29motives are good,
00:37:30but I doubt
00:37:32that they are.
00:37:33Well,
00:37:34in this situation
00:37:34you brought up,
00:37:35in his mind,
00:37:38his motives is
00:37:39good and
00:37:39honorable,
00:37:40but, you
00:37:41know,
00:37:41let's say
00:37:42your motive
00:37:42is good and
00:37:43honorable,
00:37:44but you
00:37:44are entering
00:37:46into a sinful
00:37:47or a less
00:37:50than situation
00:37:51that people
00:37:52want to emulate,
00:37:53that's not
00:37:54good.
00:37:55I mean,
00:37:55yeah,
00:37:55I'm going to
00:37:56go and I'm
00:37:57going to preach
00:37:57the gospel by
00:37:58becoming a drug
00:38:00addict so I can
00:38:00relate to drug
00:38:01addict.
00:38:02you know,
00:38:02that's,
00:38:02yeah,
00:38:03that's not
00:38:04what Paul
00:38:04meant when
00:38:05he said,
00:38:05you know,
00:38:06I become
00:38:06to the Greek
00:38:07as the Greeks.
00:38:08That's not
00:38:09what he meant.
00:38:10Right.
00:38:11Yeah,
00:38:12I really think
00:38:13that that
00:38:13particular preacher,
00:38:14I think he's
00:38:14deceiving himself.
00:38:17He believes
00:38:17that,
00:38:18I mean,
00:38:18he's trying
00:38:19to get
00:38:19sinful people
00:38:21into the
00:38:21church
00:38:22where maybe
00:38:24someday they
00:38:25might hear
00:38:26something about
00:38:27what God
00:38:27wants from
00:38:28them,
00:38:28but that's
00:38:29not the point.
00:38:30Who cares if
00:38:30people go to
00:38:31church,
00:38:31if you're
00:38:31not teaching
00:38:32them to
00:38:32repent and
00:38:34obey God?
00:38:35I mean,
00:38:35what's the
00:38:35point of
00:38:36going to a
00:38:36building and
00:38:36hanging out
00:38:37with a bunch
00:38:37of other
00:38:37sinners?
00:38:38You can do
00:38:38that at
00:38:39the bar
00:38:39on Saturday.
00:38:41Well,
00:38:41that puts
00:38:42the onus
00:38:42upon numbers.
00:38:44You know,
00:38:44I have,
00:38:45I've been
00:38:46successful in
00:38:47getting so
00:38:47many people
00:38:48in,
00:38:49and therefore
00:38:49I'm,
00:38:49you know,
00:38:50that's
00:38:50indicative of
00:38:51I'm spreading
00:38:52the word.
00:38:54Yeah,
00:38:55spreading his
00:38:55own word,
00:38:56unfortunately,
00:38:56though.
00:38:57All right,
00:38:59let's move
00:38:59on to
00:39:00verse 7.
00:39:04The righteous
00:39:04who walks
00:39:05in his
00:39:05integrity,
00:39:06blessed are
00:39:06his children
00:39:07after him.
00:39:09Anybody else
00:39:09have some
00:39:10thoughts on
00:39:10that?
00:39:11Okay,
00:39:12so that
00:39:12brings up
00:39:12an interesting
00:39:13question,
00:39:13because I've
00:39:14wrestled with
00:39:14this.
00:39:15I presented
00:39:16to my kids
00:39:17the gospel.
00:39:18I presented
00:39:19to them
00:39:19the Lord.
00:39:21If I use
00:39:22their
00:39:24response,
00:39:26which has
00:39:28not been
00:39:28good for
00:39:28any of
00:39:29them,
00:39:29unfortunately,
00:39:31does that
00:39:32equate to
00:39:32failure on
00:39:33my part?
00:39:34I don't
00:39:35think so,
00:39:35but it
00:39:36feels like
00:39:36it sometimes.
00:39:37Does that
00:39:37make sense?
00:39:39In other
00:39:39words,
00:39:40they didn't
00:39:40embrace it,
00:39:42so I
00:39:42failed
00:39:42somehow.
00:39:44Yeah,
00:39:44I think
00:39:45that it's,
00:39:46there's no
00:39:47easy answer
00:39:48to that.
00:39:49I think
00:39:49that there
00:39:50are far
00:39:51too many
00:39:52variables
00:39:52involved.
00:39:53You know,
00:39:53there are
00:39:53other people
00:39:54in their
00:39:54lives.
00:39:55there are
00:39:55two parents,
00:39:57you've got
00:39:58grandparents and
00:39:58friends and
00:39:59all these
00:39:59other influences
00:40:00plus
00:40:02entertainment
00:40:03and school
00:40:03and the
00:40:05other inputs
00:40:07that they're
00:40:08even getting
00:40:08from you,
00:40:09not just
00:40:09what you
00:40:09say,
00:40:10but what
00:40:10you do
00:40:11and how
00:40:11you treat
00:40:11other people.
00:40:12I mean,
00:40:13I know you
00:40:13now and
00:40:14you're an
00:40:15honorable
00:40:15guy.
00:40:16I assume
00:40:17that you've
00:40:18always been
00:40:19an honorable
00:40:19guy and I
00:40:20don't see
00:40:20any indication
00:40:21otherwise,
00:40:22but if
00:40:23you can
00:40:24teach
00:40:24children
00:40:25the correct
00:40:26thing all
00:40:27day long,
00:40:27but if
00:40:28you're not
00:40:28living it
00:40:28out,
00:40:29that's going
00:40:30to weigh
00:40:31a lot more
00:40:31heavily on
00:40:32them than
00:40:32what you
00:40:32say.
00:40:34So there
00:40:34are a lot
00:40:35of factors
00:40:35involved.
00:40:36Without
00:40:36living in
00:40:38your house
00:40:38while you're
00:40:39raising your
00:40:39children,
00:40:40I don't
00:40:41have a lot
00:40:41to say
00:40:42there.
00:40:43I do
00:40:44think that
00:40:45we have
00:40:46to take
00:40:47into
00:40:47consideration
00:40:48the world
00:40:48that we
00:40:49live in.
00:40:50I think
00:40:50that
00:40:51certainly
00:40:51when these
00:40:52words were
00:40:54written,
00:40:55maybe there
00:40:57were more
00:40:58people who
00:40:59understood
00:41:01God's
00:41:02law.
00:41:03Maybe
00:41:04there
00:41:04weren't,
00:41:05but it
00:41:07was written
00:41:07for the
00:41:08people of
00:41:09a particular
00:41:09God.
00:41:11And the
00:41:11culture that
00:41:12we live,
00:41:13the place
00:41:14we live,
00:41:14the culture
00:41:15we live
00:41:15among at
00:41:16this point,
00:41:17there's so
00:41:18many people
00:41:19who basically
00:41:20think God
00:41:21is dead.
00:41:23And so
00:41:23there's
00:41:23kind of
00:41:24this reality
00:41:26check,
00:41:26I think,
00:41:27when we're
00:41:27talking about
00:41:28raising our
00:41:29kids in
00:41:31truth,
00:41:32if the
00:41:33whole world
00:41:34around them
00:41:35is just
00:41:35gone mad,
00:41:37like just
00:41:38doing their
00:41:38own thing.
00:41:41I'm not
00:41:42suggesting that
00:41:43we don't
00:41:43have a chance
00:41:44or our
00:41:44children don't
00:41:45have a chance,
00:41:45but I'm
00:41:46suggesting that
00:41:47we are
00:41:48living in
00:41:49a post-Christian
00:41:50world.
00:41:54It's just
00:41:54not,
00:41:56there are
00:41:56way too
00:41:56many influences.
00:41:59And I
00:42:00don't even
00:42:00mean to say
00:42:01that it's a
00:42:01crapshoot,
00:42:02but it's
00:42:02definitely,
00:42:04like Jay
00:42:04said,
00:42:05a lot of
00:42:05variables.
00:42:07Yeah,
00:42:07but at
00:42:08the same
00:42:09time,
00:42:09who are we
00:42:10to judge,
00:42:11first of all,
00:42:12the outcome?
00:42:12The verse
00:42:14says that
00:42:15they are
00:42:16blessed.
00:42:17They have
00:42:17been blessed
00:42:18by watching
00:42:19your example.
00:42:21They have
00:42:21been blessed.
00:42:22First of
00:42:23all,
00:42:23you don't
00:42:24know what
00:42:25seeds you
00:42:25planted and
00:42:26when they're
00:42:26going to
00:42:27come to
00:42:27harvest.
00:42:28And even
00:42:29if they
00:42:29don't,
00:42:30they were
00:42:31still blessed
00:42:31by watching
00:42:32your example.
00:42:33I mean,
00:42:33they're going
00:42:34to choose.
00:42:34They have
00:42:34free will.
00:42:35They can
00:42:35do whatever
00:42:36they want
00:42:37to do in
00:42:37their own
00:42:38life,
00:42:38but they
00:42:39have been
00:42:40blessed by
00:42:40your example.
00:42:41That's a
00:42:42great point,
00:42:43Lisa.
00:42:44That's a
00:42:44really great
00:42:45point.
00:42:46I mean,
00:42:46if you
00:42:47didn't show
00:42:47your
00:42:48righteousness,
00:42:50you know,
00:42:50who would?
00:42:52That's the
00:42:52thing.
00:42:53That was
00:42:53their exposure.
00:42:57And they
00:42:58may choose
00:42:58it,
00:42:58they may
00:42:59not,
00:42:59but it
00:43:00doesn't
00:43:00mean that
00:43:00you didn't
00:43:01give them
00:43:01the most
00:43:02tremendous
00:43:02gift.
00:43:05Okay,
00:43:06well,
00:43:06let's move
00:43:06on.
00:43:07We did
00:43:07talk about
00:43:08verse 8 a
00:43:08little bit.
00:43:09So let's
00:43:10go on to
00:43:10verse 9.
00:43:11Who can
00:43:12say I
00:43:12have made
00:43:13my heart
00:43:13pure?
00:43:14I am
00:43:14clean from
00:43:14my sin,
00:43:15which kind
00:43:16of echoes
00:43:16verse 6
00:43:17again.
00:43:18And honestly,
00:43:19who can
00:43:20say that?
00:43:21If you,
00:43:23you know,
00:43:23speaking more
00:43:23from the
00:43:24modern church
00:43:24scene,
00:43:26I grew up
00:43:26in the
00:43:26Assemblies
00:43:27of God
00:43:27and altar
00:43:27calls were
00:43:28a weekly
00:43:28event.
00:43:30And I
00:43:31mean,
00:43:32I don't
00:43:32know how
00:43:32many altar
00:43:32calls I
00:43:33responded to
00:43:34and you
00:43:34go down
00:43:35front,
00:43:35you sit
00:43:36there and
00:43:36you pray
00:43:37and you
00:43:38might be
00:43:39there on
00:43:39your knees
00:43:39or standing
00:43:41or sitting,
00:43:42whatever.
00:43:42Sometimes
00:43:42laying flat
00:43:43on your
00:43:43face,
00:43:44praying for
00:43:45half an
00:43:45hour,
00:43:45an hour
00:43:46at a time
00:43:46and,
00:43:47you know,
00:43:48repenting of
00:43:48sins and
00:43:49worshiping God
00:43:51and all of that
00:43:51is great.
00:43:52There's nothing
00:43:52wrong with
00:43:53any of that.
00:43:53but the
00:43:55second you
00:43:55lift your
00:43:55face up
00:43:56and look
00:43:56around,
00:43:57oh,
00:43:57there's
00:43:57that girl.
00:43:58Oh,
00:43:58there's,
00:43:59I got this
00:43:59other thing.
00:44:00Your thoughts
00:44:01stray and
00:44:01you start
00:44:02worrying about
00:44:02things,
00:44:03you start
00:44:03thinking about,
00:44:04you know,
00:44:04that guy
00:44:04over there
00:44:05thinks he's
00:44:05so special.
00:44:07It doesn't,
00:44:08you can,
00:44:09going back
00:44:10to the,
00:44:11at the time
00:44:12that Solomon
00:44:12was writing
00:44:13and when he
00:44:14was king,
00:44:14you could go
00:44:15to the temple,
00:44:16make your
00:44:16offerings,
00:44:17and as soon
00:44:18as you turn
00:44:18around and
00:44:18walk out the
00:44:19door,
00:44:19you're already
00:44:19having sinful
00:44:20thoughts.
00:44:21Who can say,
00:44:22I have made
00:44:23my heart pure.
00:44:23I am clean
00:44:24from sin
00:44:24for more
00:44:25than a couple
00:44:26of seconds
00:44:26at a time.
00:44:27As far as I
00:44:28know,
00:44:29there's only
00:44:29one person
00:44:29in history
00:44:30who could
00:44:31be that
00:44:31pure.
00:44:32It's possible
00:44:33to live
00:44:33righteously.
00:44:34You know,
00:44:35we have examples
00:44:36in scripture
00:44:36of somebody
00:44:37that God
00:44:37said,
00:44:38this was a
00:44:38righteous
00:44:39person who
00:44:40was the
00:44:41priest and
00:44:43his wife,
00:44:44can't remember
00:44:44their names,
00:44:46when Joseph
00:44:47and Mary
00:44:47brought Yeshua
00:44:48to the temple
00:44:48and,
00:44:49you know,
00:44:50he said
00:44:51that finally
00:44:52my eyes
00:44:53have seen
00:44:53the Messiah,
00:44:54I can't
00:44:54remember the
00:44:54exact race,
00:44:55but scripture
00:44:55says that
00:44:56these people
00:44:57have lived
00:44:57righteously
00:44:58their whole
00:44:58lives.
00:44:59Doesn't mean
00:45:00that they
00:45:00were perfect.
00:45:01It means
00:45:02that they
00:45:03were,
00:45:04they lived
00:45:06within God's
00:45:06instructions as
00:45:07best they
00:45:08could and
00:45:09tried to make
00:45:10it right when
00:45:10they screwed
00:45:11up.
00:45:12And really,
00:45:13the law allows
00:45:13for that.
00:45:14It's got penalties
00:45:15and remedies built
00:45:16into it,
00:45:16so it expects
00:45:17us to screw
00:45:17up.
00:45:18But nobody's
00:45:19ever done it
00:45:20perfectly.
00:45:21Nobody has
00:45:22ever lived
00:45:22a life
00:45:23where you
00:45:23didn't have
00:45:24to take
00:45:24advantage of
00:45:25the provisions
00:45:26of the law
00:45:27that says,
00:45:27if you do
00:45:29something wrong,
00:45:30here's what you
00:45:30do to fix
00:45:31it.
00:45:31The only
00:45:32person who
00:45:32never did
00:45:32anything wrong
00:45:33was Yeshua.
00:45:34If you know
00:45:35of anybody,
00:45:37please correct
00:45:37me.
00:45:38Or if you
00:45:39have any
00:45:39other observations
00:45:39about that
00:45:40or thoughts
00:45:40about that
00:45:41proverb,
00:45:42I'm open
00:45:42to those
00:45:42two.
00:45:43I'll take
00:45:44a more
00:45:44cynical
00:45:45outlook
00:45:46when you
00:45:47bring up
00:45:48going up
00:45:49front to
00:45:49the altar.
00:45:51Yeah,
00:45:51I would
00:45:52struggle
00:45:52with
00:45:53sliding
00:45:54back
00:45:55into
00:45:55my
00:45:55myself.
00:45:58I often,
00:45:59and this
00:46:00is the
00:46:00jaundiced
00:46:02look,
00:46:02outlook,
00:46:03I often
00:46:04looked at
00:46:05that altar
00:46:07call as
00:46:08being more
00:46:08about the
00:46:09people
00:46:10administering
00:46:11it than
00:46:12my being
00:46:13up there.
00:46:13In other
00:46:13words,
00:46:15the people
00:46:16that are
00:46:16praying for
00:46:17me are
00:46:17the ideal,
00:46:19the goal
00:46:19that I
00:46:19should seek
00:46:20or try
00:46:21to be,
00:46:21and they
00:46:22weren't.
00:46:23They were
00:46:24just as
00:46:24screwed up
00:46:25as I
00:46:25was.
00:46:26Yeah,
00:46:26I've been
00:46:27in those
00:46:27kind of
00:46:27altar calls
00:46:28too.
00:46:29Yeah,
00:46:29well,
00:46:30that comes
00:46:30from my
00:46:30outlook.
00:46:31It's not
00:46:31their fault.
00:46:33They're
00:46:34actually often
00:46:35earnestly up
00:46:35there trying
00:46:37to be a
00:46:39blessing.
00:46:39And,
00:46:40you know,
00:46:40as I said,
00:46:41my jaundiced
00:46:41outlook is,
00:46:42oh,
00:46:42that's the
00:46:43goal,
00:46:43that's
00:46:43what I
00:46:43should
00:46:44strive
00:46:44for.
00:46:45And that's
00:46:46just,
00:46:46that's
00:46:46horrible.
00:46:47But being
00:46:48honest,
00:46:48that's often
00:46:49how I
00:46:50perceive
00:46:51things.
00:46:52And maybe
00:46:53there were
00:46:53people that
00:46:53were bloated
00:46:55and trying
00:46:56to be
00:46:56that.
00:46:57So it's
00:46:58just a
00:46:58perspective.
00:46:59That's all.
00:47:02Let's go
00:47:03back to the
00:47:05questions real
00:47:05quick.
00:47:06Any proverbs
00:47:07in this
00:47:07chapter that
00:47:08puzzled
00:47:08anybody.
00:47:10I didn't
00:47:11actually write
00:47:13one down
00:47:13for this.
00:47:15Well,
00:47:15actually,
00:47:15there is
00:47:16something that
00:47:16puzzled me,
00:47:17but I don't
00:47:17really have
00:47:18any answers
00:47:18to it.
00:47:20And that's
00:47:20why is
00:47:23this proverb
00:47:24repeated?
00:47:26Unequal
00:47:26weights and
00:47:28unequal
00:47:29measures are
00:47:29both alike
00:47:30in abomination
00:47:31to the
00:47:32Lord.
00:47:32And this
00:47:41isn't the
00:47:42first time
00:47:42we've seen
00:47:43this proverb.
00:47:44I think
00:47:45this is
00:47:45probably
00:47:45four times
00:47:48so far
00:47:49that this
00:47:49proverb
00:47:49has come
00:47:50up.
00:47:51And it's
00:47:51always worded
00:47:52slightly
00:47:52differently,
00:47:53so I'm
00:47:53sure that
00:47:54there's a
00:47:54reason for
00:47:54that.
00:47:55But I
00:47:57don't know
00:47:58what the
00:47:58reason is.
00:48:00All right.
00:48:01Where was
00:48:02the first
00:48:02one?
00:48:03Verse 10,
00:48:04I think.
00:48:05Yeah,
00:48:05verse 10.
00:48:05We were
00:48:06looking at
00:48:07it.
00:48:07Okay.
00:48:08Yeah.
00:48:09So I
00:48:10really thought
00:48:10that it
00:48:11was connected
00:48:11to verse
00:48:129,
00:48:12the verse
00:48:1310.
00:48:14Yeah,
00:48:15it certainly
00:48:15can be,
00:48:16especially if
00:48:16the person
00:48:17in verse
00:48:189 is
00:48:18talking about
00:48:19himself in
00:48:19relation to
00:48:20other people.
00:48:22And that's
00:48:22what I was
00:48:23thinking is
00:48:23that's a
00:48:24pretty common
00:48:25thing is to
00:48:26be like
00:48:26comparing
00:48:27oneself to
00:48:29others and
00:48:31then being
00:48:31like,
00:48:32I'm doing
00:48:33pretty good.
00:48:34I'm okay.
00:48:35And really
00:48:36unequal
00:48:37weights and
00:48:38measures is
00:48:39often what
00:48:40we're doing
00:48:41when we're
00:48:42making judgments
00:48:42about other
00:48:44people.
00:48:45We'll judge
00:48:46people harshly
00:48:46for things
00:48:47that they've
00:48:47done and
00:48:48then not
00:48:50even see
00:48:50the speck in
00:48:51our own
00:48:51eye kind
00:48:52of thing.
00:48:53And so I
00:48:54wondered if
00:48:55I thought
00:48:55that those
00:48:56two were
00:48:56connected.
00:48:57did.
00:48:58Yeah,
00:48:59that makes
00:48:59sense.
00:49:00Goes along
00:49:01with what
00:49:01Scott was
00:49:01saying too.
00:49:03Yeah.
00:49:04Is there
00:49:05really,
00:49:05are there
00:49:05really an
00:49:06apples to
00:49:07apples
00:49:07equivalent?
00:49:09Not really.
00:49:10It never
00:49:11ever is
00:49:12exactly
00:49:12apples to
00:49:13apples.
00:49:14You could
00:49:15actually make
00:49:15the same
00:49:16kind of
00:49:16connection
00:49:16between
00:49:17verses 22
00:49:18and 23.
00:49:2022 says,
00:49:21do not say
00:49:22I will
00:49:22repay evil,
00:49:23wait for the
00:49:23Lord and he
00:49:24will deliver
00:49:24you.
00:49:26And if
00:49:26you put
00:49:26that in,
00:49:28if you
00:49:28connect that
00:49:29with verse
00:49:2923,
00:49:30one of the
00:49:31reasons that
00:49:32you should
00:49:32not repay
00:49:32evil is
00:49:34because you
00:49:34might not
00:49:34be seeing
00:49:35it correctly.
00:49:36It might
00:49:37not be as
00:49:37evil as you
00:49:38think it is
00:49:38because you're
00:49:39judging it
00:49:40based on how
00:49:40it impacted
00:49:41you rather
00:49:41than what the
00:49:42other person
00:49:42was actually
00:49:43doing.
00:49:44And maybe
00:49:45you're just
00:49:45being hypersensitive.
00:49:47Interesting.
00:49:49What do you
00:49:50make of verse
00:49:5125?
00:49:52It's a snare
00:49:52to say rashly
00:49:53it is holy.
00:49:55And to
00:49:56reflect only
00:49:57after making
00:49:57a vow.
00:49:58I get the
00:49:58reflect only
00:49:59after making
00:50:00a vow.
00:50:00You should
00:50:01seriously
00:50:01consider what
00:50:02you're saying.
00:50:03But what
00:50:03of the
00:50:04it is holy
00:50:05is that
00:50:06overly
00:50:07spiritualizing
00:50:09something and
00:50:10saying,
00:50:10oh,
00:50:11that was
00:50:12amazing God
00:50:13moment when
00:50:13in fact it
00:50:14was not.
00:50:16Let's see.
00:50:16I wanted to
00:50:17check to see
00:50:17what the
00:50:19Hebrew was,
00:50:20but man,
00:50:20King James has
00:50:21a very different
00:50:21translation of
00:50:22that verse.
00:50:24it is a
00:50:25snare to
00:50:26the man
00:50:26who devoureth
00:50:27that which
00:50:27is holy
00:50:28and after
00:50:29vows to
00:50:29make inquiry.
00:50:31Word for
00:50:31devour,
00:50:32to speak
00:50:34rashly,
00:50:34I don't
00:50:35know why
00:50:36they would
00:50:36translate that
00:50:37devour,
00:50:38I guess to
00:50:38swallow down.
00:50:40Holy is
00:50:41kadosh or
00:50:42kadesh,
00:50:43so that
00:50:43literally just
00:50:44means something
00:50:45holy or set
00:50:46apart.
00:50:46what I
00:50:48think it's
00:50:48probably
00:50:48talking about
00:50:49is dedicating
00:50:51something to
00:50:52God or to
00:50:52the temple,
00:50:53whether that's
00:50:54a peace
00:50:55offering or
00:50:56whether it's
00:50:57something that
00:50:57you would
00:50:57actually take
00:50:58to the temple
00:50:59and give or
00:51:00that you would
00:51:01sell and
00:51:02redeem it.
00:51:03Think about
00:51:04Yephthah and
00:51:05his daughter
00:51:05who said,
00:51:07I'm going to
00:51:08go out to
00:51:08battle and
00:51:09if the Lord
00:51:10gives me
00:51:10victory,
00:51:11the first thing
00:51:11that comes out
00:51:12of my house
00:51:12when I come
00:51:13home,
00:51:13I will dedicate
00:51:14to God.
00:51:14He didn't
00:51:16think about
00:51:17what he was
00:51:18doing.
00:51:18He was so
00:51:20gung-ho and
00:51:21I want to
00:51:21give something
00:51:22to God,
00:51:22whatever comes
00:51:23out of my
00:51:23house.
00:51:24Then his
00:51:25daughter comes
00:51:25out and
00:51:26meets him.
00:51:27What do
00:51:28you do now?
00:51:29I really
00:51:30think that he
00:51:30had to know
00:51:31it was going
00:51:31to be a
00:51:32person or
00:51:33an animal.
00:51:34I imagine
00:51:36he expected
00:51:36it would be
00:51:36an animal.
00:51:38I imagine
00:51:39he did,
00:51:39but it's
00:51:40only living
00:51:40things that
00:51:41would have
00:51:41been able to
00:51:41walk out of
00:51:42the house
00:51:42on their
00:51:43own.
00:51:44It's a
00:51:45pretty big
00:51:46risk.
00:51:47It was a
00:51:48foolhardy
00:51:48vow.
00:51:50What if
00:51:50it was a
00:51:50cockroach
00:51:51or a
00:51:51snake or
00:51:51something like
00:51:52that?
00:51:52Are you
00:51:52going to
00:51:52make that
00:51:53holy?
00:51:53You can't
00:51:54make certain
00:51:54things holy.
00:51:56You're
00:51:57right.
00:51:58It is
00:51:59speaking
00:52:00rashly.
00:52:01It's
00:52:01speaking
00:52:01without
00:52:02thought.
00:52:05It's
00:52:06good to
00:52:06want to
00:52:07make
00:52:07promises
00:52:08to God
00:52:08and want
00:52:09to give
00:52:09things to
00:52:09him,
00:52:10but people
00:52:10do this
00:52:11kind of
00:52:11thing all
00:52:11the time.
00:52:12You
00:52:12especially
00:52:12see it
00:52:13in movies.
00:52:13God,
00:52:14if you
00:52:14get me
00:52:14out of
00:52:15this,
00:52:15I'm
00:52:15going to
00:52:15do this.
00:52:17I'm
00:52:17going to
00:52:17be a
00:52:17better
00:52:17person.
00:52:18Think that
00:52:19through.
00:52:19Are you
00:52:20really going
00:52:20to be a
00:52:20better
00:52:20person?
00:52:21What is
00:52:22going to
00:52:22be different
00:52:22after this
00:52:23event?
00:52:24It's going
00:52:25to help
00:52:25you do
00:52:25that.
00:52:27Don't
00:52:27make even
00:52:28promises to
00:52:29God.
00:52:29Don't
00:52:29promise
00:52:30stuff to
00:52:31God that
00:52:31you can't
00:52:31follow through
00:52:32on.
00:52:32It's not
00:52:33reasonable or
00:52:34that you
00:52:34can't do
00:52:35without.
00:52:37You've got
00:52:37your house.
00:52:38Say,
00:52:38God,
00:52:39I'm going
00:52:39to give
00:52:39you my
00:52:40house and
00:52:40my car.
00:52:42You heal
00:52:43me from
00:52:43whatever
00:52:43sickness I've
00:52:44got.
00:52:45That's
00:52:46great,
00:52:46but then
00:52:46where are
00:52:46you going
00:52:47to live?
00:52:47How are
00:52:48you going
00:52:48to get
00:52:48to work?
00:52:49I've seen
00:52:50a couple
00:52:52ministries that
00:52:53have sold
00:52:55everything.
00:52:56and they
00:52:59have
00:53:00dedicated
00:53:00a spot
00:53:03of time
00:53:04or finances
00:53:06to God
00:53:06and I've
00:53:08often wondered,
00:53:09okay,
00:53:10that sounds
00:53:10great.
00:53:11It sounds
00:53:12like you're
00:53:13gung-ho.
00:53:13It's almost
00:53:14when the
00:53:15300 bent
00:53:17down and
00:53:17they drank
00:53:19in a certain
00:53:19fashion,
00:53:20it's showing
00:53:21a total
00:53:23reliance upon
00:53:24God.
00:53:24But to
00:53:25me also,
00:53:26as a
00:53:27provider of
00:53:28the household,
00:53:30it's rash
00:53:32in my
00:53:33estimation,
00:53:33the way I
00:53:34look at it,
00:53:35because how
00:53:36are you going
00:53:36to live
00:53:36later?
00:53:37And it
00:53:38sounds holy
00:53:38and it
00:53:39probably is.
00:53:39Maybe it
00:53:40is for
00:53:40that person.
00:53:41Maybe it
00:53:42has a deep
00:53:42meaning in
00:53:43relation to
00:53:43how they
00:53:45interact with
00:53:46God,
00:53:46but it
00:53:48borders on
00:53:49rash to
00:53:49me and
00:53:50it's not
00:53:50necessarily
00:53:50out of a
00:53:51bad heart.
00:53:51It's just
00:53:52knee-jerk,
00:53:53so to
00:53:54speak.
00:53:54I don't
00:53:55know.
00:53:56Yeah,
00:53:56it's possible
00:53:56that God
00:53:57has told
00:53:57somebody,
00:53:58sell everything
00:53:59you have and
00:53:59give the
00:54:00proceeds to
00:54:00the poor,
00:54:01like Yeshua
00:54:01did with
00:54:02that rich
00:54:02young ruler.
00:54:04That sort
00:54:04of thing
00:54:05happens.
00:54:06Or in
00:54:07the early
00:54:07church,
00:54:08in Jerusalem,
00:54:10when everybody
00:54:10sold everything
00:54:11they had,
00:54:12or they
00:54:13shared everything
00:54:14in common,
00:54:15there are
00:54:16times when
00:54:17that's fine
00:54:17or that's a
00:54:18good thing
00:54:18to do,
00:54:19as long as
00:54:20you've thought
00:54:20it through
00:54:20and you know
00:54:21that this
00:54:21is what God
00:54:22really is
00:54:22leading me
00:54:23to do
00:54:23or that
00:54:24when I
00:54:25do this,
00:54:26there's
00:54:26some place
00:54:26I can go
00:54:27and live.
00:54:28I'm not
00:54:28going to be
00:54:28homeless.
00:54:29My kids
00:54:29aren't going
00:54:29to be
00:54:30homeless.
00:54:31Yeah,
00:54:31as long as
00:54:32it's thought
00:54:32through,
00:54:33then I'd
00:54:34be fine.
00:54:35But that's
00:54:35really what
00:54:36this is
00:54:36saying,
00:54:36is that
00:54:37make sure
00:54:37you understand
00:54:38what you're
00:54:39doing before
00:54:39you do it.
00:54:41I think
00:54:42that one
00:54:42other point
00:54:43that is
00:54:45from
00:54:46verse
00:54:4624.
00:54:49I'm
00:54:50actually
00:54:50looking for
00:54:51a different
00:54:51version now,
00:54:52but I'm
00:54:53in the
00:54:54amplified
00:54:54version,
00:54:55but it
00:54:56says,
00:54:56man's
00:54:57steps are
00:54:57ordered by
00:54:58the Lord.
00:54:59How then
00:55:00can a man
00:55:01understand
00:55:01his way?
00:55:03And this
00:55:04translation says,
00:55:06it is a
00:55:06snare to a
00:55:07man to
00:55:08utter a
00:55:09vow,
00:55:09in parentheses,
00:55:10of consecration
00:55:12rashly,
00:55:13and not
00:55:14until afterward
00:55:15inquire whether
00:55:16he can
00:55:17fulfill it.
00:55:18So,
00:55:19what verse
00:55:2024 seems
00:55:21to say to
00:55:21me is that
00:55:22we are
00:55:23supposed to
00:55:24take our
00:55:25steps from
00:55:26the Lord's
00:55:27instruction.
00:55:28And it
00:55:29sounds like
00:55:30in verse
00:55:3025,
00:55:31it's actually
00:55:32saying that
00:55:33a person
00:55:34or a
00:55:35man,
00:55:35a woman,
00:55:37to utter
00:55:37a vow
00:55:38that's coming
00:55:39from themselves,
00:55:41their own
00:55:41instruction,
00:55:43for themselves
00:55:44versus what
00:55:47the Lord is
00:55:47actually ordering
00:55:49their step
00:55:50to be.
00:55:51And 25,
00:55:53to me,
00:55:53almost comes
00:55:54up as a
00:55:55red flag
00:55:57of pride.
00:55:58Like,
00:55:58we can
00:56:00make this
00:56:02proclamation,
00:56:03this vow,
00:56:04but really,
00:56:05isn't that
00:56:05kind of a
00:56:06prideful thing
00:56:07to do?
00:56:07Because we're
00:56:08somehow deriving
00:56:09self-satisfaction
00:56:11out of,
00:56:12oh,
00:56:12I'm going to
00:56:13sell all my
00:56:14belongings and
00:56:15do this.
00:56:16And if
00:56:17that's not
00:56:18what the
00:56:18Lord is
00:56:18actually giving
00:56:19us the
00:56:20step to
00:56:20take,
00:56:21then it's
00:56:22a prideful
00:56:23thing to
00:56:24make a
00:56:25vow that
00:56:26we have
00:56:28ordained for
00:56:29ourselves.
00:56:30Does that
00:56:30make sense?
00:56:31Yeah.
00:56:32Yeah.
00:56:32I think
00:56:33that's a good
00:56:34perspective,
00:56:34and it reminds
00:56:35me of a
00:56:36passage from
00:56:37the epistle
00:56:39of James.
00:56:40I've got
00:56:41it up on
00:56:41another
00:56:41screen here.
00:56:42He said,
00:56:42this is from
00:56:43James chapter
00:56:44four,
00:56:44verses
00:56:4513 to
00:56:4716.
00:56:48Come now,
00:56:49you who say
00:56:49today or
00:56:50tomorrow we
00:56:50will go into
00:56:51such and
00:56:51such a town
00:56:52and spend
00:56:52a year there
00:56:53and trade
00:56:53and make
00:56:53a profit.
00:56:54Yet you
00:56:55do not
00:56:55know what
00:56:56tomorrow will
00:56:56bring.
00:56:56What is
00:56:57your life?
00:56:58For you
00:56:58are a
00:56:58mist that
00:56:59appears for
00:56:59a little
00:56:59time and
00:57:00then vanishes.
00:57:01Instead,
00:57:01you ought to
00:57:02say,
00:57:02if the
00:57:02Lord wills,
00:57:03we will
00:57:03live and
00:57:04do this
00:57:04or that.
00:57:05As it
00:57:05is,
00:57:05you boast
00:57:06in your
00:57:06arrogance.
00:57:07All such
00:57:07boasting
00:57:08is evil.
00:57:09I think
00:57:10that really
00:57:10confirms what
00:57:11you're saying,
00:57:11that this
00:57:11is coming
00:57:12from a
00:57:13place of
00:57:13pride.
00:57:15I know
00:57:16what's best.
00:57:16I know
00:57:16what's going
00:57:17to happen
00:57:17and I
00:57:18can control
00:57:18it.
00:57:19Yeah.
00:57:20And also,
00:57:22like that
00:57:23passage is
00:57:23saying,
00:57:24we don't
00:57:25know what
00:57:25the next
00:57:26day will
00:57:26bring.
00:57:27So,
00:57:27shouldn't
00:57:27we have
00:57:28the Lord
00:57:28order our
00:57:29steps each
00:57:31day because
00:57:33we can
00:57:35make a
00:57:36goal or
00:57:37set a
00:57:37plan that's
00:57:39far down
00:57:39the line,
00:57:40but what
00:57:40if the
00:57:41Lord says
00:57:41to do
00:57:41something else
00:57:42the next
00:57:42day?
00:57:43Okay,
00:57:43so that's
00:57:44where we
00:57:45need to
00:57:45humble
00:57:45ourselves
00:57:46and listen
00:57:48and just
00:57:48be instructed
00:57:50for that
00:57:51day or
00:57:52that week
00:57:54or whatever
00:57:54it is.
00:57:55Yeah,
00:57:56I think
00:57:56it's good
00:57:56to make
00:57:57plans and
00:57:58set goals
00:57:59and then
00:57:59act on
00:58:00those plans
00:58:00as long
00:58:01as they
00:58:01are within
00:58:02what is
00:58:03moral according
00:58:04to God's
00:58:05instructions.
00:58:05But we
00:58:07do have
00:58:07to be
00:58:07ready if
00:58:08God
00:58:08interrupts
00:58:09or if
00:58:09God
00:58:10says put
00:58:11something in
00:58:12your path
00:58:12and says,
00:58:13okay,
00:58:13here's what I
00:58:14really want
00:58:14you to do
00:58:15and it's
00:58:15not what you
00:58:16had envisioned,
00:58:17we have to be
00:58:18ready to make
00:58:18that pivot.
00:58:20And I think
00:58:20it's God
00:58:21frequently points
00:58:22us in a
00:58:23direction and
00:58:24we think we
00:58:24know what
00:58:25the end
00:58:25goal is.
00:58:26And when
00:58:28I first moved
00:58:28here to
00:58:28Texas,
00:58:29I was certain
00:58:31that God
00:58:31was telling
00:58:31me first
00:58:33that it was
00:58:34time to get
00:58:34out of the
00:58:34city.
00:58:35I lived
00:58:35in Denver
00:58:35at the
00:58:35time and
00:58:37I was
00:58:38convinced of
00:58:38that.
00:58:39There were
00:58:39multiple
00:58:39things that
00:58:40happened that
00:58:41confirmed that
00:58:42and I had
00:58:44some friends
00:58:44here and I
00:58:46moved here
00:58:46thinking I'm
00:58:48going to come
00:58:48here and I'm
00:58:49going to be
00:58:50like a
00:58:50missionary to
00:58:51these people.
00:58:52They were
00:58:53already moving
00:58:54more towards
00:58:55obedience to
00:58:55God's commands.
00:58:57They were
00:58:57keeping a
00:58:57seventh-day
00:58:58Sabbath.
00:58:58They were
00:58:58toying with
00:59:00some of the
00:59:01things that
00:59:01many Christians
00:59:02just ignore and
00:59:03they were saying
00:59:04God said to do
00:59:05this, why
00:59:05don't we do
00:59:06that?
00:59:06They were
00:59:07asking those
00:59:07questions and I
00:59:09thought they just
00:59:09need some help.
00:59:10Maybe that's why
00:59:10God is getting me
00:59:11out of the city so
00:59:12I can go here and
00:59:13help these people
00:59:13move along.
00:59:15But then things
00:59:16happened and it
00:59:17became clear that
00:59:18really wasn't why
00:59:19God had sent me
00:59:21the way that he
00:59:21did.
00:59:22And it's like,
00:59:23okay, now what
00:59:24am I supposed to
00:59:25do now?
00:59:26And just pivot to
00:59:29the new direction.
00:59:30In each of these
00:59:31things, it's like the
00:59:32camps in the
00:59:33wilderness.
00:59:33There were 42
00:59:34camps that God
00:59:35led the Israelites
00:59:35through and they
00:59:38just wandered around
00:59:39in loop-de-loops in
00:59:41the wilderness for
00:59:4140 years, God
00:59:43leading them from
00:59:44one camp to
00:59:44another and none
00:59:45of those camps
00:59:46were the
00:59:46destination.
00:59:47They were all
00:59:48just a step
00:59:49towards the
00:59:51destination, but
00:59:52sometimes not even
00:59:52in the direction
00:59:53they were supposed
00:59:54to be going.
00:59:55Sometimes he was
00:59:56leading them in the
00:59:56opposite direction
00:59:57and they all must
00:59:59have been wondering,
01:00:00where is he taking
01:00:02us now?
01:00:03Are we supposed
01:00:03to, is the
01:00:04promised land down
01:00:04that direction now?
01:00:06No, the promised
01:00:06land was always in
01:00:07the same place, but
01:00:09the steps to get
01:00:09there, only God
01:00:11knew what those
01:00:12steps were.
01:00:13And their job was
01:00:14to, when that
01:00:16pillar of cloud or
01:00:17fire lifted up off
01:00:18the tent of meeting,
01:00:20their job was to
01:00:21pack up their tents
01:00:21and follow wherever
01:00:23God led them and
01:00:25then stop when he
01:00:26stopped and just to
01:00:27trust that he knew
01:00:28what he was doing.
01:00:28If I can put
01:00:30another little spin
01:00:31on verse 24.
01:00:33Actually, somebody
01:00:33was going to say
01:00:34something there.
01:00:34Go ahead.
01:00:36I was just going
01:00:36to say it's
01:00:38because it wasn't
01:00:39so much like getting
01:00:41to the destination
01:00:42as much as it was
01:00:43about becoming the
01:00:44people that they
01:00:45needed to be when
01:00:46they got to the
01:00:47destination.
01:00:48Yeah, that is
01:00:49exactly right.
01:00:50That was really
01:00:50the more important
01:00:51thing.
01:00:52Yeah, it was
01:00:53about winnowing
01:00:53the one
01:00:56generation and
01:00:56creating the
01:00:57second generation
01:00:58of the following
01:00:59generation's
01:01:00obedience.
01:01:01I was going to
01:01:02go there exactly
01:01:02where you did,
01:01:03Paul.
01:01:04Yeah, good
01:01:05observation.
01:01:06I want to put
01:01:06another spin on
01:01:08verse 24 here.
01:01:09It doesn't really
01:01:09change the meaning
01:01:10a lot, but it
01:01:11may add another
01:01:12dimension to the
01:01:13meaning.
01:01:15The Hebrew
01:01:16doesn't use the
01:01:17same word for
01:01:18man in both
01:01:19parts of this
01:01:20verse.
01:01:21Let me pull up
01:01:22the King James
01:01:22plus.
01:01:23The first
01:01:24man, the
01:01:25man's goings
01:01:25are of the
01:01:26Lord.
01:01:26That man is
01:01:27the word
01:01:27geber.
01:01:29And that's
01:01:30the word used
01:01:30for a mighty
01:01:31man or a
01:01:32warrior.
01:01:33And this
01:01:34isn't just any
01:01:35warrior like a
01:01:36soldier.
01:01:37These are the
01:01:37elite.
01:01:38So like David's
01:01:39mighty men, the
01:01:4030 men that he
01:01:41surrounded himself
01:01:41with in the
01:01:42wilderness.
01:01:43So Uriah and
01:01:45Yoav, these
01:01:46were the mighty
01:01:46men.
01:01:47They were the
01:01:47commanders and
01:01:48they went out and
01:01:50killed their
01:01:50hundreds or
01:01:50thousands of
01:01:51Philistines right
01:01:52along with
01:01:52David.
01:01:52The second
01:01:53man is
01:01:55Adam, which
01:01:57just means
01:01:57man.
01:01:59So if a
01:01:59mighty man, go
01:02:01back to the
01:02:01ESV because it's
01:02:02easier to read,
01:02:04a mighty man's
01:02:05steps are from
01:02:06the Lord.
01:02:07How then can a
01:02:08regular man
01:02:08understand his
01:02:09way?
01:02:10So if even a
01:02:11mighty man isn't
01:02:12really controlling
01:02:12his own steps,
01:02:14how much less is
01:02:15a regular man who
01:02:17isn't so powerful
01:02:18and strong not
01:02:21going to control
01:02:21his own steps.
01:02:23I thought that
01:02:23was pretty cool
01:02:24the way that it
01:02:25contrasted that
01:02:26and I wish that
01:02:28the English
01:02:28translations would
01:02:29draw that out a
01:02:30little more.
01:02:31You know what I
01:02:32love about that
01:02:33is that when you
01:02:34think of a
01:02:34mighty man,
01:02:35you think of a
01:02:36egotistical
01:02:39person who's
01:02:42full of
01:02:44himself.
01:02:44but if the
01:02:45verse is saying
01:02:46a mighty man
01:02:48steps, he's
01:02:49deriving those
01:02:50instructions as
01:02:52to what step to
01:02:53take for the
01:02:53Lord, how
01:02:54beautiful is it
01:02:55that mighty
01:02:57person is
01:02:58humbling himself
01:03:00or herself so
01:03:01much that is
01:03:02taking direction
01:03:03from the Lord
01:03:04and how much
01:03:05that's
01:03:06counterintuitive,
01:03:07right?
01:03:07We see a mighty
01:03:08man as being
01:03:09full of himself
01:03:11and full of a
01:03:12plan and vigor
01:03:13and charge
01:03:14forward and
01:03:15instead, it's
01:03:16no, the
01:03:17mighty man is
01:03:18on his knees
01:03:18saying, what
01:03:20do I do, Lord?
01:03:21Direct me.
01:03:23Yeah, next to
01:03:23God, we're all
01:03:24ants.
01:03:25Thank you for
01:03:26that extra
01:03:27insight.
01:03:29All right.
01:03:30Four questions.
01:03:32Is there
01:03:32anything in here
01:03:33that offended
01:03:33anybody or just
01:03:35rubbed you the
01:03:36wrong way?
01:03:38What do you
01:03:38make of verse
01:03:3830?
01:03:40Glows that
01:03:40would cleanse
01:03:41away evil.
01:03:43strokes may
01:03:45clean the
01:03:46innermost parts.
01:03:47Is that
01:03:47basically saying
01:03:48that, I
01:03:50don't know.
01:03:51How do you
01:03:51interpret that?
01:03:52Well, I think
01:03:53that you already
01:03:54answered this one.
01:03:56You and Paula
01:03:56did talking about
01:03:57the wilderness.
01:04:00They, it's the
01:04:01trials of life
01:04:02that, that
01:04:04refine us, turn
01:04:05us into who
01:04:05God needs us
01:04:06to be.
01:04:06It's not, it
01:04:08could be talking
01:04:08about blows,
01:04:09like the blows
01:04:10for the back
01:04:11of a fool.
01:04:12Some people
01:04:13only learn
01:04:14through punishment,
01:04:15but really it's
01:04:16about trials and
01:04:17hardship in life
01:04:18and how that
01:04:19develops our
01:04:20character.
01:04:21At least that
01:04:22is my
01:04:22interpretation.
01:04:24I like that.
01:04:25I think
01:04:26frequently, just
01:04:27like what Solomon
01:04:27talks about in
01:04:28Ecclesiastes,
01:04:29sometimes the
01:04:31troubles, the
01:04:31blows that come
01:04:32in life are the
01:04:33result of bad
01:04:34decisions.
01:04:35We ignored
01:04:36warnings that
01:04:38said, don't go
01:04:39this way.
01:04:40So we ignore
01:04:41them and suffer
01:04:41the consequences
01:04:42and only then
01:04:43start to learn,
01:04:45all right, next
01:04:45time I'm going
01:04:46to read the
01:04:47signs and not
01:04:49take, not turn
01:04:50left on a one
01:04:51way or whatever
01:04:52the case may be.
01:04:54Verse 14 is one
01:04:56that I noted as
01:04:56offending me.
01:04:58And it doesn't,
01:04:59the proverb of
01:05:00course doesn't
01:05:00offend me.
01:05:01It's just, it's
01:05:02an observation of
01:05:02human behavior.
01:05:04It's the behavior
01:05:05that offends me.
01:05:06And I know that
01:05:07in most of the
01:05:08world,
01:05:09this is normal
01:05:11and accepted
01:05:12and honorable
01:05:13behavior.
01:05:15It's negotiation.
01:05:16Yeah, negotiating
01:05:17and bartering over
01:05:18things, but I have
01:05:19never understood
01:05:19it.
01:05:20Bad, bad says
01:05:21the buyer, but
01:05:22when he goes
01:05:22away, then he
01:05:23boasts.
01:05:25Haggling over
01:05:25something and
01:05:26insulting the
01:05:27seller and
01:05:28insulting the
01:05:28product in order
01:05:29to bring the
01:05:30price down.
01:05:31And then when
01:05:31you walk away,
01:05:32you're all
01:05:32pleased with
01:05:33yourself because
01:05:33you got a
01:05:33great deal on
01:05:34a good product.
01:05:35Like, it just
01:05:37gets my
01:05:38tackles up.
01:05:39Star in
01:05:40Turkey.
01:05:41That was
01:05:42expected.
01:05:43You were not
01:05:43to be paying
01:05:44the asking
01:05:45price because
01:05:46the asking
01:05:47price was,
01:05:48it's almost
01:05:48like a car
01:05:49salesman.
01:05:50We're going
01:05:50to play this
01:05:51game.
01:05:52And if you
01:05:53feel that you
01:05:53cut the other
01:05:54party down,
01:05:55so it's not a
01:05:55win-win situation,
01:05:56it's a win-lose
01:05:57situation, then
01:05:58you get to boast
01:05:59about how you
01:06:00defeated the
01:06:01other party and
01:06:03you get the
01:06:05better of them.
01:06:06I listened to
01:06:08a preacher on
01:06:09this earlier
01:06:10this week.
01:06:11He's of
01:06:12Middle Eastern
01:06:13descent.
01:06:13I don't know,
01:06:14Iranian or
01:06:15something like
01:06:15that.
01:06:16And he was
01:06:17talking about
01:06:17when he and
01:06:18his wife went
01:06:18on a trip
01:06:20into the
01:06:20Middle East
01:06:21and he didn't
01:06:22really say what
01:06:23the product was.
01:06:24There's some
01:06:24street vendor
01:06:25selling something
01:06:26and he
01:06:28decided that he
01:06:28was going to
01:06:28honor his
01:06:29ancestors by
01:06:30haggling this
01:06:31to death.
01:06:32And he got
01:06:34into it and
01:06:34they were
01:06:34yelling, he
01:06:35and this
01:06:35vendor were
01:06:36just yelling
01:06:36and screaming
01:06:37at each
01:06:37other and
01:06:38throwing insults.
01:06:40And finally
01:06:41he got,
01:06:42really they
01:06:43just met in
01:06:43the middle.
01:06:44The guy,
01:06:44the vendor
01:06:45wanted $40
01:06:46for whatever
01:06:46it was and
01:06:47he was going
01:06:47to offer
01:06:47$5.
01:06:49They eventually
01:06:49met at $20.
01:06:52And they
01:06:53were both
01:06:53happy with
01:06:53the deal,
01:06:54but they
01:06:55both walked
01:06:55away still
01:06:56cursing each
01:06:56other because
01:06:57that's how it
01:06:58was done.
01:06:59And apparently
01:06:59this show
01:07:01drew a big
01:07:02crowd in this
01:07:02bazaar because
01:07:04all the
01:07:04tourists wanted
01:07:05to watch
01:07:05these two
01:07:06Middle
01:07:06Eastern guys
01:07:07haggle,
01:07:07even though
01:07:07one of
01:07:08them only
01:07:09looked Middle
01:07:09Eastern.
01:07:10He grew up
01:07:10in America.
01:07:12But I don't
01:07:13understand how
01:07:14that works.
01:07:15I get
01:07:15conceptually,
01:07:16on a personal
01:07:17level, I don't
01:07:19really get it and
01:07:19I don't think I
01:07:20would ever trust
01:07:20myself to be
01:07:21able to haggle
01:07:23that way.
01:07:24I really like my
01:07:25world to be black
01:07:26and white as much
01:07:27as possible.
01:07:28The world just
01:07:28doesn't cooperate.
01:07:30You ever try to
01:07:31buy a car?
01:07:31Yeah, I
01:07:33let Paula do
01:07:34the negotiating.
01:07:35I have done
01:07:35way more of
01:07:36the negotiating
01:07:37than he does.
01:07:41I was trained
01:07:42in this.
01:07:43Yeah, my son
01:07:44went to buy a
01:07:45car and he
01:07:46paid, I gave
01:07:48him advice, this
01:07:48is what you
01:07:49should pay,
01:07:50offer and this
01:07:50and that and
01:07:52be willing to
01:07:54walk away and
01:07:55he paid their
01:07:56price and he
01:07:57lost.
01:07:59He overpaid
01:08:00what happened
01:08:00when he was
01:08:01fine with
01:08:02overpaying.
01:08:04Go ahead.
01:08:06I was just
01:08:06going to say,
01:08:07I think that
01:08:08with car sales
01:08:09and stuff like
01:08:10that, it's
01:08:11definitely, there's
01:08:13a somewhat of a
01:08:13game to it but
01:08:14the reality is
01:08:15for me when I
01:08:17go to buy a
01:08:18car, I'm
01:08:19looking at the
01:08:19market value,
01:08:20I'm looking at
01:08:20all kinds of
01:08:21things and my
01:08:23goal is to get
01:08:24a win-win kind
01:08:26of situation and
01:08:27the truth is that
01:08:28no car dealer is
01:08:29going to sell you
01:08:29a car at a
01:08:30loss.
01:08:31They won't do
01:08:32it and they're
01:08:33going to put the
01:08:34brakes on as
01:08:35early as possible
01:08:36on your offers
01:08:37but you can get
01:08:39a lot of
01:08:39information to
01:08:40know what's
01:08:42reasonable and
01:08:43I think that's
01:08:44really important
01:08:45in terms of
01:08:46just even as
01:08:48believers, I
01:08:49think there's
01:08:50something about
01:08:51goodwill to
01:08:54try to give
01:08:55somebody something
01:08:56that is closer
01:08:59to what they're
01:09:00asking is but
01:09:01that nobody's
01:09:02losing in the
01:09:03situation but I
01:09:05think that's it's
01:09:05very difficult
01:09:06because of the
01:09:07game that car
01:09:07salesmen play
01:09:08these days because
01:09:09there's so many
01:09:09ways they're making
01:09:10money on cars
01:09:11that the financing
01:09:13that all the stuff
01:09:14so it's definitely
01:09:15a different thing.
01:09:17it's not just
01:09:18professional car
01:09:20sales either.
01:09:21In private
01:09:22sales, I'm not
01:09:24going to name
01:09:24names because I
01:09:25don't want to
01:09:25embarrass anybody
01:09:26but not that
01:09:28anybody in this
01:09:29call right now but
01:09:29they might watch
01:09:31this video later.
01:09:32my tendency is to
01:09:34believe people when
01:09:35they tell me here's
01:09:36my situation and
01:09:38they give you a
01:09:38sob story and I
01:09:39want to believe
01:09:40them but this
01:09:42proverb is telling
01:09:43you don't take
01:09:44that at face
01:09:45value.
01:09:46If somebody is
01:09:47going to get a
01:09:48good deal out of
01:09:49you by giving you
01:09:49a sob story,
01:09:50they're very likely
01:09:52to give you that
01:09:52sob story but you
01:09:54don't have to cheat
01:09:55yourself in order
01:09:57to benefit them.
01:10:00You stick to your
01:10:01guns, get a
01:10:02fair price on
01:10:02whatever you're
01:10:03selling or
01:10:03whatever you're
01:10:04buying.
01:10:05I know somebody
01:10:06who they were
01:10:08selling a vehicle
01:10:09and we knew
01:10:10exactly how much
01:10:11the going price
01:10:14was for this
01:10:14vehicle in this
01:10:15condition and
01:10:17somebody they had
01:10:19been trying to
01:10:19sell it for a
01:10:20while at too
01:10:21high of a price so
01:10:22they kept bringing
01:10:23their price down
01:10:23and somebody came
01:10:25to them with a
01:10:26lowball offer
01:10:27and gave them
01:10:30this sob story
01:10:31about they're
01:10:32unemployed and
01:10:34they've got this
01:10:34problem and that
01:10:35problem and for
01:10:37all I know all of
01:10:38that was true but
01:10:39that's beside the
01:10:40point.
01:10:41You don't have to
01:10:42cheat yourself to
01:10:44appease somebody that
01:10:45you don't even know.
01:10:46If you know them
01:10:47and you want to
01:10:48help them, that's
01:10:48great but if you
01:10:50don't know this
01:10:50person, you have no
01:10:51way of knowing that
01:10:52their story is true,
01:10:53you need to assume
01:10:54that they're just
01:10:55giving you a sob story
01:10:56in order to get a
01:10:57better deal.
01:10:58That's just plain
01:10:59common sense and
01:11:01yeah, he believed
01:11:02the sob story, sold
01:11:03his vehicle for
01:11:04about half of, maybe
01:11:05not even half of what
01:11:06he should have gotten
01:11:07for it, lost a bunch
01:11:09of money and that
01:11:11guy probably went
01:11:11home and boasted
01:11:13about what a great
01:11:13deal he got even
01:11:15after he told the
01:11:16seller about all
01:11:21the things that were
01:11:21wrong with it and all
01:11:22the money he was
01:11:22going to have to put
01:11:23into it.
01:11:23exactly what this
01:11:25proverb says.
01:11:27This could be the
01:11:28beggar on the street
01:11:30corner proverb.
01:11:31Do you believe it?
01:11:33There are probably
01:11:33some that are
01:11:34accurate.
01:11:35I don't believe
01:11:36anybody in that
01:11:38scenario anymore.
01:11:39I have given to
01:11:41some people before.
01:11:42Sometimes it's been
01:11:43to get out of the
01:11:45situation.
01:11:47It is
01:11:48unfortunately
01:11:51the person
01:11:53that is giving
01:11:54you their story
01:11:55it seems that
01:11:57oftentimes they're
01:11:58the same story
01:11:59just different
01:11:59people and
01:12:01is it
01:12:02my job,
01:12:03the Christian
01:12:03job or point
01:12:04of view to
01:12:05pay them
01:12:06or to
01:12:07bless them
01:12:08if God
01:12:09tells me.
01:12:10I have had that
01:12:11happen occasionally
01:12:12but I know
01:12:13when we were in
01:12:14Turkey we were
01:12:15told don't give
01:12:15to any beggars
01:12:16and there was
01:12:19somebody begging
01:12:19with no legs
01:12:20outside and I
01:12:21turned to our
01:12:22guy and I said
01:12:23I'm sorry I can't
01:12:24follow that rule
01:12:25if I see this
01:12:25again.
01:12:27It's sad that you
01:12:28have to question
01:12:28am I going to be
01:12:30true to my
01:12:32feelings of whether
01:12:33I should bless
01:12:34somebody or not
01:12:35or be feeling
01:12:37I've been had.
01:12:38Yeah,
01:12:39that is a really
01:12:39complicated question.
01:12:41It's not an
01:12:41easy answer.
01:12:43Here in the
01:12:44States if there's
01:12:45somebody begging
01:12:45on a corner
01:12:46panhandlers
01:12:47or whatever
01:12:47I will frequently
01:12:49give them a few
01:12:50dollars.
01:12:51It's not going
01:12:51to hurt me
01:12:52and it's not
01:12:53going to make
01:12:53their day either
01:12:54but I don't
01:12:55know them so I'm
01:12:56not going to give
01:12:56them any more
01:12:57than that.
01:12:58If they look
01:12:59like they're doing
01:12:59just fine I
01:13:00probably won't
01:13:01give them anything
01:13:01but I've also
01:13:03heard stories
01:13:04about especially
01:13:05in India where
01:13:07people will
01:13:08deliberately cripple
01:13:09children so that
01:13:12they will get
01:13:13more money
01:13:14begging.
01:13:15This kind of
01:13:16thing happens to
01:13:16orphans, people
01:13:17like that.
01:13:18And I feel
01:13:20bad for this
01:13:21kid.
01:13:21I've never
01:13:22been to India.
01:13:22I've never
01:13:22seen this.
01:13:23I've only read
01:13:23about it.
01:13:25I feel bad
01:13:25for that
01:13:26person but
01:13:27giving them
01:13:29money is that
01:13:30encouraging the
01:13:30person who
01:13:31injured that
01:13:32person to do
01:13:32that to
01:13:33somebody else?
01:13:33I don't
01:13:34know.
01:13:35I don't
01:13:36know what
01:13:36the right
01:13:36answer in
01:13:37those kind
01:13:37of situations
01:13:37is.
01:13:39I haven't been
01:13:39there yet so
01:13:40if I ever
01:13:41am I'll have to
01:13:42think about it
01:13:43some more.
01:13:44It's definitely
01:13:44complicated.
01:13:46Yep.
01:13:47Are there any
01:13:48other proverbs
01:13:49in this chapter
01:13:49that someone
01:13:50wants to talk
01:13:50about?
01:13:51I don't see
01:13:52anything in
01:13:53particular.
01:13:54How do you
01:13:55split up 16?
01:13:57Take a man's
01:13:57garment when he
01:13:59has put up
01:13:59security for a
01:14:00stranger and hold
01:14:01it and pledge
01:14:02when he puts
01:14:04up security
01:14:04for foreigners.
01:14:06Isn't holding
01:14:07it and taking
01:14:08a garment
01:14:09on both
01:14:11scenarios
01:14:12pledges?
01:14:13Yeah.
01:14:14I think it's
01:14:15a parallelism.
01:14:16It's saying the
01:14:16same thing twice
01:14:17and stranger and
01:14:19foreigner are
01:14:19essentially the
01:14:20same thing.
01:14:21I wonder what
01:14:21the Hebrew
01:14:21there is.
01:14:23But it's
01:14:23basically
01:14:23equity.
01:14:25Oh.
01:14:26King James
01:14:27says strange
01:14:29woman instead
01:14:31of foreigner
01:14:31that's not
01:14:33Cree.
01:14:34Yeah.
01:14:35It can be a
01:14:37harlot, a
01:14:38prostitute.
01:14:40But I think
01:14:41really what it's
01:14:42saying is that if
01:14:43somebody has a
01:14:43history of making
01:14:44bad decisions,
01:14:45then you better
01:14:47get some collateral
01:14:47if you're going to
01:14:48loan them some
01:14:48money because they
01:14:50are either going to
01:14:53impoverish themselves
01:14:54and not be able to
01:14:55pay you back or
01:14:56they're just making
01:14:57bad decisions or
01:14:58they're not
01:14:58trustworthy,
01:15:00whatever it is.
01:15:02Just treat a
01:15:03person how their
01:15:04history demands.
01:15:07All right.
01:15:07Okay.
01:15:08Yeah.
01:15:08In the case of
01:15:09those beggars,
01:15:10this would certainly
01:15:11apply if you know
01:15:12the beggar and you
01:15:13know that either
01:15:14he's made and
01:15:15continues to make
01:15:16bad decisions that
01:15:17put him in a place
01:15:18to be asking for
01:15:19money all the time
01:15:20or you know he's
01:15:21going to go out and
01:15:22buy alcohol, drugs,
01:15:23or something with it,
01:15:25then don't give him
01:15:25any money because
01:15:26you're just making
01:15:27the problem worse.
01:15:29That's one way I
01:15:29would apply it
01:15:30anyways.
