Seth and Sean dive into what DeMeco Ryans and Davis Mills had to say about the Titans.
Transcript
00:00Let's go to our safe space. Football. Titan Scouting Report. This is D'Amico Ryan's yesterday.
00:07D'Amico met with the media yesterday on where he's seen improvement from Cam Ward since week four
00:13when the Texans faced him the first time. Hey, Cam is, I think where Cam has grown to me where it's
00:18early on, you see a lot where he was running out of the back of the pocket, you know, trying to
00:24make the big play a lot where you see him trying to settle down. I think offensively, they'll try
00:29to settle things down here after the bye week, kind of, you know, not try to take the big plays
00:34as much and try to get the ball out of the quarterback's hands a little quicker. So I think that's where
00:38the coaching staff will come in and try to help him to settle down even more.
00:42All right. So the, um, running out the back of the pocket. And that's where the settling down part,
00:49we kind of joked around a little bit, but it's real. Cam Ward has smaller hands. He doesn't
00:55have tiny Elfin hands like Kenny cook, but he's like, pick it. Yeah. Kenny pick it. Yes.
01:01I don't know. Somebody, but probably some Elfin hands. I'm probably somebody I went to high school
01:05with or something. Yeah. Um, but he, uh, he's got the drops. He's a little bit. He's got,
01:10he leads the league in fumbles. And, uh, there's times where he just, if you can get them flustered,
01:15um, you know, even when he doesn't fumble it, just even handling the ball, people talk about
01:20him like a point guard almost that doesn't have a good handle. Um, and he's like, he can't,
01:26I keep seeing people say, Oh, he needs to run more. They need to get him involved in the run game.
01:30I, I don't know what to think about that. Cause he's not a fast guy. No, he's like Baker Mayfield
01:37and that he's got a scrambling ability and an ability to extend plays. But I don't think he's
01:41somebody that all of a sudden you turn them into a zone read machine or something. No, no.
01:45And I don't want him getting injured. He's a small guy. He's a small guy. Well, the, the,
01:49I think it's, I think they talk about Cam Ward using his legs the same way that we've talked
01:55about over the last couple of years, CJ using his legs a little bit more like, Hey, he's a little
02:00more athletic than you think. Do it when it's appropriate. When it's appropriate. He's got
02:03good awareness. Um, it's there for you. It's there for the taking. You're on an offense that is
02:08challenged. There are much more challenged offense, obviously than the Texans are, but this is a way
02:13you can keep in better down and distance situations or on third down, move the chains.
02:17I, the article that I read on, it was either the ring or the athletic, it was the athletic,
02:21um, from their, their beat writer. And I, his name escapes me. Um, but it, it was going through
02:28all the trials and tribulations that Cam Ward has gone through this year in the areas he needs
02:32to improve. And I felt like I was reading a Mad Libs article where they replaced CJ's name
02:37with Cam Ward. It's a lot of the same stuff. I think that I, right now where the Titans,
02:42whether they are or not, or are not in tank mode or whatever, cause it's not, it's not that if you
02:48were going to tank, this isn't necessarily a great year to do it other than, you know,
02:52what they're talking about in Tennessee is getting that number one overall pick just so you can trade
02:55back. Um, and it's not as lucrative of a year to trade back probably as in other years, but still
03:01just, yeah, get as many picks as possible. But you're also in that mode where look, the team's
03:07not going anywhere. And if we want to develop this quarterback first and foremost, you want to get
03:13your young quarterback as much as, uh, have him be as much of a pocket quarterback as possible.
03:19And you don't want to have them all of a sudden trying to learn how to make that distinction
03:23between when to run and when to hold onto it as, as much as just, let's get him comfortable in
03:27the pocket. Um, how does he respond to pressure? Like D'Amico said, he's doing a better job of all
03:32of that. Uh, the one thing you asked earlier is, okay, would they have an advantage coming out of
03:37the bi-week? Maybe, maybe it is in that regards in terms of, have they added a couple of things to
03:43this package where they can simplify it for their rookie quarterback, but ambush a defense a little
03:49bit. And maybe that involves some QB designed runs or something where there's a rushing element to
03:54it. Yep. Um, here's another one from D'Amico. Let's flip over
03:57to the other side of the ball. The, the strength of the Titans, if there is a strength with the
04:01Titans, I mean, they're the worst team in football, but if they do have a strength,
04:04it's their defensive line with Jeffrey Smith.
04:08He's defensive line is the, the strength of their, their entire team. Um, we know the guys
04:14inside are really great players. They can wreck a play at any given time. So to do that,
04:20we just have to play with awareness up front. We got to play with toughness. We're going to
04:24have to grind. Uh, you know, Simmons is a really great player, right? He's going to play hard each
04:29and every snap. There is no let up in him. So we have to out-compete him as best we can knowing
04:35that, you know, he's going to make some plays, right? We got to weather the storm. We got to keep
04:39moving forward. We can't allow one play to get us down. We just have to keep pressing. We have to
04:43keep mixing it up offensively, running our offense the proper way.
04:47You mentioned the name earlier. I mean, obviously Jeffrey Simmons is one of the best players in
04:50football. No Tavondre Sweat in that first game. Yes. Tavondre Sweat in this game. He's back now.
04:56So that nightmare of last year's game where remember Tavondre Sweat basically retired Shaq Mason. Yes.
05:03Uh, he just kind of threw him aside. Yes. Like a, like he was a teenager or something. Yeah.
05:09Who's getting in your way. Um, you look around to be sure there's no, you know, nobody watching.
05:14Yeah. I'm allowed to smack this teenager. You know, when you make that decision,
05:21I'm going to punch this teenager. Right, right, right. I don't care if I have to do a hard time
05:26for it. I'm going to punch this teenager. I know everybody's got a camera in their hand,
05:30but this kid is a jackass. I need to do this for society. That was Shaq Mason. Yeah.
05:36And, uh, I think that that's, that's my biggest concern. The, the plus side is that, man, they've,
05:42they've really embraced running Woody.
05:47Marks. If you had his Howard back, I think you've got a guy that you've got two guys who
05:51can get out in space and block on some edge run plays because Ariante Urssi did a really
05:56good job of it last week. So the, the, if, if the Texans are continuing to try to establish
06:01the run, this is a real prove it scenario and try to run versus Tavondre Sweat and Jeffrey
06:07Simmons. Oh, no doubt. I don't, I'm, I'm really, I don't want it to turn into,
06:12Hey, they've got the ball at the one yard line and this, and D'Amico decides that, Hey,
06:16we got to prove that we're tough enough to win. We got to push these guys off the line.
06:20Yeah. Cause I got to tell you, I don't think they are. I don't, I think they may, I think
06:24they've improved on the offensive line a lot. I don't think they're good enough on the interior
06:27to beat Tavondre Sweat and Jeffrey Simmons on the one yard line.
06:31I think they've had an epiphany. I think the, the, the, the increased usage of Woody
06:36Marks and them using Woody Marks in hat in half to have it situations running to the outside.
06:43I think they've had an epiphany set. I don't think they're going to run British Brooks multiple
06:47times into a brick wall on Sunday. I feel good. And maybe this time, even they, maybe even though
06:53Woody to the outside sets up something, remember the touchdown they scored against the Ravens
06:56where they fake the pitch to Woody to the outside and they had Jalen Noel coming across
07:01the formation, right? And he was wide open. And then he did the Ray Lewis stance afterwards.
07:04And that's when it comes in. Okay. What style of runs are you running on the inside? Like,
07:09are you doing more zone inside zone runs versus duo, which is very much a duo without getting
07:16overly technical about it. It is a, we're bigger and tougher than you. And we're going to prove
07:21it type of play. Yep. And I just don't think they're quite there yet. So especially
07:26not versus want to be, they've got, they want to be that right. Got the mindset, but they're
07:31instill in that mode of, okay, I'm going to fight this guy 50 times until I, until I become
07:37a good enough fighter to beat this guy. But they're right around, I would say like their
07:4223rd or 24th fight right now. So when you really have to win this game, don't let it come down
07:48to, we're going to manhandle to Vondra sweat and Jeffrey. Do not do that. Do not do that at
07:53all. I want, you know, in thinking about that play in the Ravens game where they fake the
07:58pitch to Woody left, throw it back over to Jalen Noel, just a little flip pass by CJ to
08:03the right. I want that to happen again. So that Jalen Noel can do the funky chicken afterwards,
08:09the Billy white shoes, Johnson dance. Cause that would be, you know, cause that, that should
08:13be Jalen Noel's gimmick is that he, even though Casario on our show two days later said it was
08:17asinine that needs to be Jalen Noel's gimmick is he taunts the other team by doing the iconic
08:24touchdown dances of their legend. I think that wouldn't necessarily have to be viewed as taunting
08:28if that's an homage to a Houston legend, you know? Yeah. So I would approve of that one.
08:34I would, I don't think that would be overly, I don't think that'd be over the top. I mean,
08:38really white shoes, Johnson didn't do his damage in Nashville. Right. So, uh, yeah, I think that's a,
08:43that's a, that's an appropriate taunting, but also definitely a show of respect to Billy white.
08:48You know, who would a hundred percent view it as taunting? Yeah. Amy Adams Strunk. She would
08:53not like that one, even one little bit. I don't think she's liked by anybody in Nashville or Houston
08:58right now. Right, right, right. No, but I just like pissing her off. You know, I think if it makes
09:02her mad, then I'm down with it. Um, here's Davis Mills. You talked about it here. Davis Mills on the
09:10challenge of facing a team with a bad record. Yeah. I mean, I mean, we talked about in the team
09:14meeting today and watching film, like these guys play hard. Um, the record is what it is,
09:19but I mean, they're coming out. There's NFL players on that team as well. They're paid to do the job and
09:24just like we are. So we know they're talented and have the capability of, of winning the game,
09:30but we got to go out and execute, um, and play at a really high level and kind of take things in our
09:35own hand to hands to go out there and, um, to try to win this game. Um, we can't sit back and start
09:42off slow and try to fall into something. We got to be the aggressors and, um, go out there and
09:47execute. Agree with everything he said, everything he said, and you know, who should know better than
09:52anybody that you can't take a bad team lightly and the bad teams still play hard. They're not
09:56tanking Davis Mills. Davis Mills should know better than anybody. He was on a team like this and was
10:02the starting quarterback in 2021 and 2022. Yeah. You should know that they won a few games and
10:08they won a few games. Well, there's a text here. Aren't these guys tanking? What are you guys
10:11talking about? Like the players aren't tanking? Yeah. The players aren't tanking. Stop that.
10:16It's not. Tell me how many teams have gone. Oh, well, they've won one game already,
10:20but usually the worst team in the league has a couple of wins, even if they are tanking in the
10:25second half. I don't count that win. That was the, that was that. It was such a weird one. No,
10:28but it's exactly the kind of flukish thing that happens. Yes. They beat the Cardinals. Right.
10:33Right. This isn't the Dolphins beat the bills last week. I don't know how many times do I have
10:40to get frustrated by this, by people who watch the NFL every year and see the upsets and act like
10:45any game in the NFL every single year. Some of the best in the Texans. Guess what? The Texans aren't
10:52one of the best teams in the league right now. Guess what? The Texans were beating this, this horrible
10:58Titans team by a lofty margin of six to nothing entering the fourth quarter the last time they
11:04played them. That was with two makeable missed field goals by Joey Sly in that game too. Probably
11:10should have been six, six. Yeah. Everything that Davis just said right there is true. The coaches
11:15and the players are not tanking in the middle of a game on Sunday. Yeah. Other than some in-game
11:21decisions in the last couple of games of the year, that's where you'll see some teams where they
11:25don't go for the win. You're like, okay, clearly you guys are a hundred percent tanking at this
11:29point. It's just not the way it works in the NFL. Right. But then go, Hey, teams that are the Astros,
11:35the Astros, when they were tanking, they're still going to win 50 games that year. You know, it's just
11:39not stop it with your, Oh, this team is tanking. So it's a, it's a foregone conclusion that you're
11:44going to win. And more than any other sport. And, and there's multiple people bringing up tanking
11:48here that more than any other sport, it feels like to me, Seth, more than any other sport,
11:54football is the one that guys are most concerned about what they're putting out there on film for
11:59other teams. Yeah. And this is a team and the bad teams are full of guys that are probably going to
12:04be on other teams next year or in other training camps next year. You know what they, you know,
12:08what teams that are tanking don't do. They don't say, well, we just drafted that quarterback.
12:12Number one overall. Let's just let them get the crap beat out of them for 60 plays. And we don't
12:19have to worry about him developing into a good quarterback until next year. Right. Like they're
12:23very, they are very much trying to get some success. Like that's a, no, that's what people don't
12:30understand about tanking in the NFL. You don't actually have to try hard to do it because if
12:35you're bad enough, you're only going to win a few games. Yeah. You'll lose. So no, they don't want
12:40Cam Ward to go through like more hardship than he needs to. They want to try to develop him.
12:46Yeah. So stop it with your tanking talk. Stop. Yeah. You just like, come on, you guys, you guys
12:51that are texting are old enough to read and write. So you've been watching the NFL for a while. Right.
12:56And you've seen and know and understand how many upsets there are in the NFL every year. I agree
13:01with you. And that was our PSA. That's not just for you, texters. That's for all of you out there
13:05at the water cooler talking about tanking with your colleagues at work and whatnot. All right.
13:11Thank you for coming to our Ted. Do you think of that? Like, is there an image that like,
13:14are the people think that, that McCoy, the interim coach is getting in front of the team
13:20and saying like, Hey guys, just gotta be sure. Whatever you do, if we get to the fourth quarter
13:25this week and it's close, I really want to be sure that you guys aren't playing all that
13:28hard. Maybe let Cam Ward get sacked really hard a few times. I heard that he got in front
13:33of the team this week, Seth, and he went to the, the, the overhead projector or the equivalent
13:37and he fired up Mel Kuyper's big board of the top 50 draft prospects and said, Hey guys,
13:43we need you to put forth your best foot to get Jeremiah love. Yeah. And the offensive
13:48lineman from Miami. These are the guys we're targeting here. So go fall on your face this
13:52week. This is why it's frustrating for me. Cause as a player, when you're on one of these
13:55teams, it's really bad. Uh, like I was in 2005 that you're there's all kinds of these conspiracy
14:03theories about tanking and everything. And the only way you can defend is saying, no,
14:10we actually suck this bad. Yeah. You know, like you're like, listen, listen, like there's
14:15no defense that feels good. Like Chris Brown missed a really bad field goal against the
14:21Titans, ironically enough. And people were convinced that the team told him to miss the field goal.
14:25Just, just, but it was on a series where the, the series had been extended because Chris Brown
14:32ran a fake field goal earlier in that series. Like it was obviously not a tanking situation.
14:37And you have to say, no, we just suck this bad. Will you leave me alone with your allegations
14:43of tanking football games and intentionally losing? Well, this is where, this is where also I would
14:48ask this texter, how long have you lived in Houston for? Do you recall, do you recall Davis
14:54Mills last start before the one this past Sunday? It was week 18 against the Colts where they're
15:00converting fourth and thirteens to Brandon cooks and fourth and twenties to Jordan Aikens. They're
15:06going for two at the end of games. Like you live in a city that had every reason to tank a game in
15:11week 18 to get the number one pick. And they tried their asses off to essentially get the number
15:17two pick in the draft. Davis Mills through a perfect interception that turned into a touchdown.
15:24You know, that was a, that was a TWP, a turnover worthy play. That was a big one. And it is one
15:30of the things that makes me nervous about this game is that Davis Mills has the highest turnover
15:34worthy play rate in the league right now of quarterbacks who have as many, as many throws
15:39as Davis Mills does. He's had a lot of dicey throws that he got lucky on. He don't do that
15:45versus this team. No, uh, bold statement saying I could read and write could be using talk. Okay.
15:55Nevermind. The text is using chat. Talk to text right now. Okay. That's what he says. Yeah. Voice
15:59the text right now. Okay. Um, Chris Brown, the singer, no Chris Brown, the kicker, Chris Brown,
16:05the running back for the Titans. Right. Right. And the Texans for a little bit. He was, uh,
16:12the, the, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. He was at the Texans for, for, for a, uh, for,
16:16for a hot minute through an interception down near the goal line.
