Tensions soar in Ghana as West African migrants are forcibly deported under the controversial US-Ghana migrant deal. Reports of migrants being dragged out of hotels, held at military camps in poor conditions, and denied legal protections have sparked outrage from lawyers and human rights advocates. The Supreme Court has adjourned a human rights challenge until November 26, while lawyers warn that the government’s actions violate both domestic and international law.

00:00so today the court was convened to consider our application for disclosure to disclose the
00:22agreement that ghana has entered into with the u.s government that was the purpose of today's
00:26hearing as well as to consider an injunction application against the government the court
00:29has access to assist it further and file legal submissions in connection with his decision and
00:34that's what we are looking to do within the within the week yesterday the immigration officials of
00:43ghana made an attempt to drag out of their residents some of the deportees that were brought into the
00:49country and deport them we as lawyers appeared on behalf of the individuals were conversed with
00:55immigration officials asking that under our law whether they had one a court order authorizing a
01:01deportation or executive instruments for the minister none of which they had the the person
01:07that the immigration was looking to deport were persons who had protection orders against their
01:12removal to their countries of origin and they were hard pressed to continue to impress upon
01:16immigration authorities why they cannot be in their countries of origin the immigration authorities would
01:20not listen to them they were practically dragged out on the floor and taken away we are we are
01:26disappointed in the treatment of of persons that ghana has received whether or not validly or legally
01:31under an agreement we have an obligation of humanity to individuals to persons that we call our
01:37fellow west africans and we are disappointed in the course of action that have taken place
01:41our we are determining we are looking forward to petitioning both the minister of foreign affairs the
01:47attorney general as well on the treatment of these individuals and we hope that ghana can wake up and
01:51recognize its responsibilities under international law we know that certain individuals have been
02:00removed we're understanding that some are being held in custody we we can't verify that at this moment
02:05but it's a matter of deep consent to us and we're following every measure to verify and ascertain where they are being held
02:17we are considering a number of legal actions we know that this is a you know the executive has
02:21shown that they have very respect little respect for the court processes even when we have filed
02:26processes in the past they have snuck out individuals out of the country and we want to be careful that
02:31even as we are taking legal steps to protect these individuals we don't end up in such a scenario again
02:36so what we are looking to do is that we're considering a variety of legal options as to how better to protect them
02:41they objected to their deportation on three grounds one that they have protection orders
02:50from u.s courts preventing their removal from the countries of origin two that there's no court order
02:55from any ghanaian from any ghanaian court which is authorizing their removal uh from the from the
03:01from the countries and thirdly that there's no executive instrument and a ghanaian law which the law
03:06requires to be done all of these have not been done while they continue to be held in detention
03:12beyond the constitutional mandated period
03:19we're renewing our call again on the government that we are prepared to withdraw this matter from
03:23court if the government resigns the agreement so the government communicates its intention to not
03:28follow the implementation of the agreement we are happy to withdraw this matter from the supreme court
03:32there are of course questions of abuse of human rights that will continue but the basis of our
03:36challenge is that the agreement violates international law and violates our constitution and this is
03:41what we are continuing to call on the government to do
03:50i went there to visit them so as i went there through conversation we became a friends
03:56and that's how come that relationship come between me and her
04:05as i speak with her that time or in the morning that i went there it's like she don't know
04:13they just called that they are coming to pick her and they didn't tell her where they are picking her to
04:18and she asked but they didn't tell her anything no information nothing they just said you should
04:25pack they are coming to pick her that's what she told me
04:27i asked where are they taking her to they told me that if i want to know i should follow them and i
04:39asked that where they say they can't tell me but if i want i should follow them to airport that's what
04:47they told me i said i should follow them to airport is that airport they are turning here or where it's like
04:54that's where the problem all started and the woman too was telling them that in fact she don't want to
05:00follow them because she don't trust them so she's waiting for her embassy to come then she will follow
05:06the embassy and follow them to the airport where they want to take care but they refuse they refuse and
05:12they drag her on the floor just like that and in fact i don't know up to now since yesterday up to now
05:19i don't know where she is i wish to the government is to look into the matter where because i learned
05:34that the woman said she doesn't commit any crime at the america day and they just deport her or she went
05:42to do some few things and they just said they should go to back and they just deport what she knows that
05:48she's in prison almost four months before they put them inside the plane and to ghana and inside the
05:55plane too they didn't tell her that they are coming to god they just said where are you sending us they
06:00said they are sending us to ghana and ghana is safest place for them to stay so it's like as she came here
06:07she knew that she have a a a good place that she's coming to stay but what happened yesterday in fact
06:14there's no it's it's like it puts ghana a bad image it puts ghana bad image so if the president can
06:22look can do something about it especially these security people that they are sending them to
06:27operations and those things they are work they should look at it
