00:00It's another example of the government putting illegal migrants
00:03coming across the Channel before British people.
00:06Indeed, and we've been talking about it and talking about it
00:09and talking about it, and it seems to never change.
00:12And the government, whichever government it is,
00:14seems to be digging itself into an ever-deeper hole
00:17through increasingly sort of stand-alone, erroneous policies such as this.
00:24But to be fair to the Labour government,
00:25they said they'd get them out of the hotels, and that's what they're doing.
00:28Right!
00:28But, look, as I've said numerous times, none of this is going to go away.
00:34None of these contentious policies are going to end
00:38until the problem of the boats ends.
00:42And what the government is doing with this is not addressing the boats
00:45and going after the criminal gangs, as I've said,
00:47is one small, yes, useful, but small part of the puzzle.
00:52There are a whole range of other things that have to be done
00:55if the boats, the flow's going to be stemmed.
00:56And what the government is doing is not addressing that.
01:00It is addressing some of the consequences of this flow.
01:04And those consequences are going to increase.
01:07They are going to become ever more expensive.
01:09And now it's eating into UK housing stock as well.
01:12So, until the government actually finds the courage, the will, the knowledge,
01:18and the plan to deal with the flow of the boats.
01:22Now, that's a large topic that we've talked about before,
01:25and no doubt we'll talk about again, sadly.
01:27But, so this, I think, you know, we're passing the cost on.
01:30It's worth saying that no matter what solution is applied,
01:34the cost, there's still going to be a cost implication.
01:37So, we're shifting cost around.
01:39It's generally overall increasing, but we're shifting it.
01:42Any solution is going to require funding.
01:45But the thing is, I want to see solutions applied
01:48which are going to address the problem
01:50so that, at one point, we can then stop having to fund it.
01:54I mean, this is, to be fair, Matthew,
01:56this is cheaper than keeping migrants in hotels.
01:59However, Circo, which is one of the three private contracts
02:01involved working for the Home Office,
02:03is offering landlords, private landlords,
02:05five-year guaranteed full-rent deals to house asylum seekers.
02:09Now, if I was a landlord, I'd be going,
02:11well, this sounds like a really good deal, guaranteed,
02:14all looked after, I'd have to worry about it.
02:16However, we have 1.3 million people
02:18on the social housing waiting lists.
02:20So, you said earlier, I think perhaps tongue-in-cheek,
02:23this was my favourite topic.
02:24It definitely is not my favourite topic.
02:26You do mention it occasionally, it has to be said.
02:28I respond, and when I'm asked about it,
02:29or people post about it,
02:32this is a favourite topic of the right-wing media.
02:35First of all, these people are human beings,
02:36let's remember that, OK?
02:38And if they are here illegally, they should be deported,
02:41and with any luck, will be deported.
02:43But there has to be due process.
02:45We have laws in this country,
02:46which is one of the reasons people want to come to this country,
02:48one of the reasons that makes us a great country
02:50of the rule of law.
02:52As you've both said, this is a cheaper solution
02:54at the moment than it is putting people up in hotels.
02:58And by the way, just speaking purely for myself,
03:00I would not like to be in a hotel,
03:02stuck in a hotel for, what is it, a year, two years,
03:05seven quid a day, living with another man,
03:08not my idea of fun.
03:09So this idea of living in luxury, to me,
03:11is, I think, utter nonsense.
03:13Yes, people are struggling.
03:14I talk about it repeatedly.
03:16Tens of millions of us are struggling to make ends meet.
03:19And I can just assure you of one thing,
03:21that if the people who come across the boats
03:23were not coming across on the boats,
03:24those tens of millions of us would still be struggling.
03:28We've got a massive problem here, which we do have.
03:30Let's look over there and blame them.
03:33And that's been done for decade after decade after decade.
03:35It's nothing new.
