00:11 Cleverley is in Rome to discuss ways to jointly stem illegal migration from North Africa.
00:18 His visit comes a day after the British Parliament passed the controversial Rwanda Bill, which
00:24 will see some illegal migrants sent to the African country, legislation that's been slammed
00:29 by lawyers and human rights groups.
00:32 "This new legislation seriously hinders the rule of law in the UK and it sets a perilous
00:38 precedent globally. It is critical to the protection of the human rights and dignity
00:43 of refugees and migrants seeking protection that all removals from the UK are carried
00:48 out after assessing their specific individual circumstances in strict compliance with international

00:57 The bill has also been met with dismay by some Rwandans living in the capital Kigali,
01:03 some of whom were themselves refugees.
01:05 "Of course it is also strange because somebody who is in the UK should not be coming to a
01:10 country like Rwanda which is poorer. So we would expect that the UK would have more resources
01:17 to accommodate more refugees."
01:20 Cleverley is due to meet his Italian counterpart Matteo Piantidossi in Lampedusa on Wednesday
01:26 to accelerate joint work on cracking down on irregular migration.
01:31 It comes after Italy announced last year it would open third-country migrant processing
01:36 centres in Albania, which was criticised as falling outside EU law.
