00:03And today I wanted to get into a conversation about just what Detroit has to offer.
00:09And the fact that so many people always think of the politicians, the people who have huge platforms.
00:15But there are culture changes happening every single day that you may not actually know are changing the culture here.
00:22And I got someone who's definitely changing the culture because you probably already know his name.
00:26His name is Black Gold. How you doing?

00:30I'm doing great because going down your accolades really made me lock in that you have been doing some crazy things in your life.
00:37Yes.
00:37So we got to start from the beginning.
00:40I want to ask this first question.
00:42What's the most Detroit thing about you?
00:44Music.
00:45True.
00:45Yeah.
00:46That makes sense.
00:47I mean, it is a music city.
00:48So when it comes to what you do, you're a producer, you're a DJ, what is, I guess, what in the Detroit musical environment first drew you to wanting to dive into production and into DJ?
01:03It really started off with, shout out to my mom, my parents, my grandparents.
01:11It was just like so much so embedded in my family.
01:16I didn't know really much, know what to do with it as a kid.
01:21I just kept like singing like stuff out.
01:25You know what I'm saying?
01:26Like trying to get out, oh, what if this beat sounded like this or something like this.
01:30So like as a kid, I was already thinking of isolating stems or however like things are now to, you know what I'm saying, production-wise.
01:40And I didn't know I was going to be DJing either.
01:42So it was really like I was just humming and, you know, trying to get things out and then end up finding myself making music around like early beginning stages of high school.
01:55It was around like my freshman year of high school, like 2007, and then it just went on up from there.
02:02Like couldn't stop.
02:04Couldn't stop me.
02:05I was like, yo, I get to make anything I want.
02:07It's a wrap, son.
02:08You know what I'm saying?
02:09So like it was legit.
02:10It was up there.
02:11I love that.

02:16So for you, was there like a song that really made you be like, okay, how did they make that?

03:16Yeah, I kept doing this thing and I'm like, I don't know what song it is, but like it just,
03:20you know, until I found out like, wait, I know what it is now.
03:23Uh, it's the chief rocker joint.

03:30You know, yeah, but it was that bass line.
03:31And I was just like, you know, that sample is like insane.
03:37So like, that was the only thing I knew as a child.
03:40I'm like, yo, like, this is it.
03:43Like, I went everywhere.
03:44Like I say, I had like my whole, you know, child series, just like riding a bike.
03:48It would just be, that was like the main baseline that would be stuck in my head.
03:51So like being able to curate or like sample something like that as an adult is just like,
03:56of course that sparks back memories, you know what I'm saying?
03:59And of course, yeah.
04:01I love that that was the moment that you just couldn't get out of your head.
04:05I feel like that's with all music.
04:06And based off of what I researched, your influences also make me know that we are going to be very
04:11good friends.
04:12Really?
04:13Roy Ariers.
04:14You got Slum, obviously Slum Village.
04:17Come on now.
04:18Jill Scott.
04:18Yep.
04:19And like, just off of those alone, I was like, oh yeah, we're going to be kinfolk.
04:22We're going to be cool.
04:23So how do those inspirations and obviously others that are in the city of Detroit manifest
04:29in your work now, either when you're in the studio or just behind the decks?
04:36Man, it really made me unapologetically me when I'm behind the decks and when it comes
04:44to making music now.
04:45Actually, it's more behind the decks than it is music because I actually just found
04:50myself when it came to making music.
04:52I was kind of all over the place, but it was just something I was enjoying to do, of course,
05:00because I started making music first.
05:01So like these influences, like my mom banging the first two Jill Scott albums back to back,
05:08you know what I'm saying?
05:09Mom's got taste.
05:10Listen, talk to me off the second album.
05:12I can say that restfully, you know what I'm saying, quickly.
05:15Like that was a joint I ran back as a kid also off the CD, you know what I'm saying?
05:21But yeah, as a producer, first it was just like these people made me, you know what I'm
05:30saying, get my, or made me feel like the, I can, I can't do anything, but like, and it
05:36just gave this smoothness out of me and I didn't really utilize that because like, I
05:40feel like I was following, um, not really the trends, but like what it was like who really
05:46inspired me, but like, you know, I feel like everybody started off with how whoever really
05:51inspired them to do something first and then you go, you veer left, like do your own thing.
05:55So I was like on the tip of still learning and now, you know, now I'm able to really
06:00like put out some quality work because I've learned just so much of just like from peers,
06:05from people that's not here anymore.
06:07Right.
06:07Um, and now for music though, like when behind the decks, it's a wrap, you know what I'm
06:12saying?
06:13Like now I'm able to be like, I can take them to where I was at when I was a kid, you
06:18know what I'm saying?
06:18And like really push them to like, yo, this is where I'm, my thought process is.
06:22And it's like, when I DJ, I don't feel like it's just song for song.
06:27I feel like it's, um, I'm able to, um, I don't think it's song for song.
06:33I'm able to really pivot folks.
06:38Uh, I'm trying to think of what I'm trying to say.
06:40It's not song for song.
06:42It's more so like of a, I feel like I'm still producing while I'm making, I mean, while
06:47I'm DJing.
06:48And so like, I don't feel like it's just, here y'all go.
06:50It's like, I feel like I'm still making, um, yeah, I still feel like I'm actually creating
06:54while DJing.
06:55And I don't feel like a lot of people really understand that or if I'm, Hey, if y'all
06:59do, you know, yeah.
07:02I feel like people don't really, cause I think that when they go to certain events, they're
07:07just like, okay, the DJ is just, you know, sliding stuff in.
07:10They don't really understand like how much time, effort and curation goes into it.
07:15And not only that, but also, like you just said, you're also producing at the same time.
07:20So how are you able to balance both at the same time?
07:25I cannot.
07:27I'm a person to say I cannot.
07:28It is, it's hard for me.
07:30At least it's hard.
07:30Cause at first when I started doing it, it was so dope.
07:35Like I was like, yo, I'm about to go out here and push these remixes and shout out to
07:39House Party Detroit.
07:40Like, uh, I wasn't really on the scene like that DJing.
07:44Like I was only, so me starting off DJing was me only, uh, only playing my beats.
07:52And I did that at Parameda Sound when it was on Jefferson and Agnes.
07:56Um, and it was like every Friday they would have like a beat showcase of, full of producers.
08:03And I was like, I didn't want to come with a laptop.
08:07I didn't want to come with my phone.
08:08I had one day to figure out how to use a controller and play some beats on that joint.
08:15You know what I'm saying?
08:15Cause I wanted the transitions to blend.
08:17So like, and so me teaching myself how to DJ from my own production was the way.
08:22Cause I'm like, oh, this is how it works.
08:24I'm like, yo, it's a rap.
08:26That probably was a loophole low key because you were already able to like know your own
08:31music in and out.
08:33So you were able to figure out how the blends would work a lot easier than just using music
08:38that wasn't your own.
08:39Exactly.
08:39So like when it came to curation, like I was with it.
08:42So like anybody asked like, oh, do you DJ anywhere else?
08:44I'm like, nah, unless you want to hear my own music.
08:47Not really.
08:47So when it came to my first set, my boy Reckless, he was like, yo, he was like, you want to
08:53hop on the set?
08:54It's like 2018.
08:55And it was a house party event.
08:57It was at Northern Lights Lounge.
08:59And I got some of my favorite songs and I was ripped it.
09:02And I thought I messed up because I downloaded a new program of Tractor and I didn't get used
09:07to it.
09:07And I was just like, man, it was terrible.
09:09And they was like, yo, you're fire.
09:11We need you on the next show.
09:12And so ever since then, like we just been backing each other up.
09:17Like we've been growing with each other.
09:18And now, you know, ain't no shame.
09:23There's really no shame.
09:24Like I said, so I grew with them.
09:26And like I said, the wave with, like I said, with production, with that too, like it just
09:32so happened, like I was going to do this thing, but like it was so much now, like the party
09:36scene drove me out of like pushing my own music out too, you know what I'm saying?
09:42Because it was still a good introduction because I, I pushed my remixes out.
09:46Right.
09:46But like, I think the balance of putting that there and there, like I feel like it was just
09:51a split because I still was able to give people music within that, but like I just didn't
09:56do it on the party scene as much.
09:58So unless it was like a remix, you know what I'm saying?
10:01Because yeah, I feel like a lot of people, they want to hear that ears.
10:04It has to be certain events to that.
10:06You want a Friday night, you don't want to hear no instrumental, you know what I'm saying?
10:09You want to say something, you know what I'm saying?
10:10You want to get out, have a drink, whatnot.
10:12So yeah.
10:13And that's the cool part about, I think when I talk to DJs and just people in the music
10:17industry, like how their brains work, like how you're able to curate for different audiences.
10:22So speaking of, we've been kind of like talking around it.
10:25Can you tell me about 79 FM?
10:28Yeah.
10:28What's going on?
10:30Because before I moved here, people were telling me that I need to pull up for 79 FM.
10:34So can you tell everybody what that is?
10:36All right.
10:36So 79 FM is a fictional radio station, right?
10:44In Detroit that, hey, this is it.
10:47This is 79 FM.
10:49It's like, no.
10:49But 79 FM is a fictional radio station that I wanted to, first, initially it was supposed
10:58to be like, it's a project that it was supposed to be a beat tape, right?
11:02And I had all this curations.
11:04I had like a good friend of mine, Mona Lisa, like she did like the, it's supposed to be like
11:08traffic reports.
11:10And it's supposed to be like legit, like a beat tape surrounding, like just based off Detroit.
11:13But like, it's that radio station that you never get to hear some cool stuff on there.
11:18Right?
11:18So the project never came out.
11:22And this is me being vulnerable as a artist.
11:26I was like, yo, I was like, they probably not going to like it.
11:28But like the idea of it, of course, sound dope, but I just didn't believe myself at the time.
11:33So Spotlight Detroit opened up in around 2021.
11:38And so like we was there, of course, like all the homies was getting parties or whatnot.
11:42And I was the last to get one.
11:44So it was like, I had a meeting with them, the people at Spotlight.
11:48It was like, oh, we'll give you a Wednesday night.
11:50I'm like, a Wednesday?
11:52I'm like, all right, you know, I guess.
11:54And so I named it 79 FM, you know what I'm saying?
11:57So I'm like, why not start here?
11:58So like, essentially that was going to be the place to come hear good music.
12:03Like, you know, the beat tape, you know what I'm saying?
12:05I'm like, oh, we can just connect the bridge like that.
12:07So it's been four years.
12:10I've been building a platform there.
12:13I've been bringing different folks up in there.
12:16And it speaks for itself now.
12:18Like this Thursday, I'm sorry, this Wednesday coming up, November 12th,
12:24will be the fourth anniversary of 79 FM.
12:26That's incredible.
12:27Yes.
12:27And this year has been insane.
12:30Like it's been insane.
12:31I've been going crazy with the theme artists.
12:34And it wasn't like that initially.
12:35Like initially, like I said, I was here to get some good music, you know,
12:39at least come here when I'm bringing to the table.
12:41But then I was just like, you know,
12:43ain't a lot of places where y'all can hear like a Dwelle Night or Music Soul Child Night.
12:48So I was doing single artists.
12:50And then that's why I was like, you know what, let's do double artists.
12:52And it wasn't necessarily like a versus because I don't do the versus joint.
12:56Or competition between the two.
12:57Yeah, no, it's more like what music like goes great with this other artist as well.
13:03Right.
13:04So I had the Cleo Soul and Alex Isley Night at the beginning of the year.
13:08And like when I tell you I don't leave people on when I make my flyers,
13:12but it legit says like, yo, this is a night dedicated to Neo Soul and R&B.
13:17And people thought they were about to pull up.
13:19I'm like, yo, no, it ain't this.
13:20But I'm glad, though, because like the idea of that makes me know that people know their music.
13:26And like the reaction of that kind of sparked, kind of flew off like, yo,
13:30I need to keep coming to these Wednesdays.
13:31That was the one that people were telling me about.
13:34Yeah.
13:34And I was like, oh, he's tapped in.
13:36Yeah, for sure, for sure.
13:38And that was a beautiful night, too.
13:39You know, I have a set.
13:41The first half, almost like two hours of the set is on my YouTube channel.
13:46Because I start off with like heavy Alex, but like when my mans came in and taped the show,
13:52it was end up like being like heavy Cleo at that point.
13:55But still, it's a good mix of both around the whole thing.
13:58So what has been your proudest moment in these past four years for 79?
14:05Being able to connect with the city.
14:08Because, yeah, like I said, it's still like a thing for me where I didn't think that I was going to be in this position.
14:14Or being able to really tap, like for people to really connect from where I'm at.
14:20You know, that's really heartfelt.
14:22Because you can, people be out here like, and it's still people out here that's just like putting their heart on the table.
14:28You know, like all these ideas I be putting out, I'll be like, y'all don't like this?
14:33You know what I'm saying?
14:33And like, it's like, yes, we do.
14:35You know what I'm saying?
14:36And it's not like, I don't want to.
14:38The thing is now, like, I want people to come out and enjoy themselves.
14:43But like, now, I mean, as far as like the upcoming year, like, I'm probably, it's going to be like a halt with the theme nights.
14:51Just because I'm trying to sell people more of the party than I am.
14:56Like, who's next?
14:57And I'm like, it ain't like that.

14:59You want the vibe to be similar, but not to be always having to.
15:04That's why it's never just like, yo, we playing, you know, Alex Isley or Cleo Soul legit all night.
15:12It's wrapped up.
15:13Everything is wrapped up with the essentials of what made these artists, what made me, what made y'all to actually come out.

15:20So like, when people hear that other side, it's like, oh, we can turn up and listen to Cleo Soul?
15:25What you mean, son?
15:26We can do this.
15:27And I'm like, yes, you can.
15:28And so now going forward, like, I'm going to wrap this year up nice.
15:32You know, we're going to do this D'Angelo tribute.
15:35Next month I'm doing, it's either, it's, I want to, yes, I want to do because I can be, I can be, oops, that's what it is.
15:50I can be a huge, I'm a, you know, I'm a huge Beyonce fan.

16:00But like, I'm telling you, like, there's nobody in the city that plays Beyonce like me.

20:55And I'm like, all right, you know, and I'm just like, I'm about to go on tour.
20:59I was like, I literally said this in my head.

21:03I had a fire around like February of 2022.
21:09I was like messed up for a minute.
21:11Finally got in a new place.
21:12I haven't heard nothing.
21:14They ain't say, I ain't hear a word from him at all.
21:16And I'm just like, all right.
21:17I mean, I'm not expecting it to, but like, it was just like, I would love some good news

21:22So like around August of 2022, I believe, uh, Fonte called me.
21:30He's like, yo, you got some time to talk?

21:32He was like, all right, I got pool on the line.
21:34And he was just like, yo, he was like, we gearing up to get some stuff started.
21:38He was like, we want to see if you want to be our tour DJ.
21:40And I'm like, yes, absolutely.
21:45So when I got on a roll with them and actually this is the craziest part.
21:48This is how I know these brothers own business.
21:50They was like, yeah, we're going to see the itinerary and everything.
21:53And I'm like, okay.
21:54So I'm thinking like, it's going to be, I believe like two weeks out.
21:56Cause they wanted me to come to the city and like, check it out.
21:59And you know what I'm saying?
22:00Like it was going to be like a whole thing to come actually check out their culture of hip hop.
22:04That's cool.
22:04Shout out to the justice league.
22:05And I got the itinerary the next day.
22:08Like, I think I was gone that same weekend.
22:10That following weekend, I was gone.
22:11They flew me out there.
22:12You know what I'm saying?

22:15Like I had dinner.
22:17I think, no, actually we had, we got Waffle House.

22:21And we took it back to the crib.

22:55And I had sampled out a song from Solange's album.
22:59And I did a hashtag.
23:01And he was going through the album reviews of that.
23:04And I, you know, my beat flip was, my beat flip was on the hashtag.
23:09So he was like, yo, like, what is this?
23:11So I was asleep.
23:12It's like three o'clock in the morning.
23:14I get a, I'm looking at my reviews.
23:16Like, you know, I'm just like, oh, let me see what they said on Twitter.
23:18This was Twitter days before Elon bought it.
23:20So algorithm was beautiful.
23:24But he was going through it.
23:26And I look, the homie Dart Adams had hollered.
23:29He was like, yo, he was like, Fonte Coleman, want that track.
23:32And I'm like, this is three o'clock in the morning.
23:35I'm like, I know who Fonte is, but who is Fonte Coleman?
23:39So I go to Google.
23:40I'm like, oh, wait, Fonte Coleman is Fonte.
23:43I was like, oh, snap, bet.
23:44So one thing, once, I mean, like, on to the next, like, we ended up connecting and that
23:50same beat ended up being on the last Little Brother album.
23:53It's called Work Through Me.
23:54And it's tied with the homie.
23:56Like I said, me and Focus actually made the beat because the, I think the sample was too
24:01much to clear.
24:02They was like giving him a hard time, I believe.
24:05So like Focus ended up, the Focus, the producer, I don't know if you know who that is.
24:09Like, yeah, yeah.
24:10Ended up lacing the track off my drums and it just ended up becoming a banger.
24:13So like when I heard it instantly, because I heard the album from start to finish and
24:17I heard my drums, I'm just like going crazy.
