00:21Who the fuck is Albert Fish?
00:24What?
00:24Who the fuck is Albert Fish?
00:26He was a serial killer. He killed, he slayed children and ate them. He was a cannibal.
00:33But when they, the police asked a woman to describe him and she said he was gray in both appearances and demeanor.
00:44Very bad description.
00:46This is like Arsenio when it was, ooh.
00:48Yeah, ooh.
00:49Fish tortured, mutilated and murdered the youngsters.
00:52They were children. With a meat cleaver, a butcher knife, and a small hand saw.
00:59Oh, Jesus.
01:01And he immediately began confessing to killing 700 children.
01:05Get out of here.
01:06Yes. And he was, he was dizzyingly happy about it.
01:10Smiled as he described the grisly details of the tortures and the murders.
01:15Appearing to the detectives and one of the detectives said he appeared as the devil himself.
01:19I mean, this guy was a real jerk.
01:24May I have your attention, please?
01:28May I have your attention, please?
01:30Leave the building by the nearest exit.
01:33Do not use the elevators.
01:35Can't hang on, Ronnie!
01:39Obviously a major malfunction.
01:40Hamilton Howard Albert Fish.
01:58Born May 19th, 1870.
02:01Died January 16th, 1936.
02:04Was an American serial killer, rapist, child molester, and cannibal who committed at least three child murders between July 1924 and June 1928.
02:18He was also known as the Gray Man, the Werewolf of Wisteria, the Brooklyn Vampire, the Moon Maniac, and the Boogeyman.
02:27Fish was a suspect in at least ten murders during his lifetime, although he only confessed to three murders that police were able to trace to a known homicide.
02:44He also confessed to stabbing at least two other people.
02:48Fish once boasted that he had children in every state, and at one time stated his number of victims was about 100.
02:59However, it is not known whether he was referring to rapes or cannibalization, nor is it known that the statement was truthful.
03:07Fish was apprehended on December 13th, 1934, and put on trial for the kidnapping and murder of Grace Budd.
03:16Fish was convicted. He was convicted and executed by electric chair on January 16th, 1936, at the age of 65.
03:26He has declined to make a last statement.
03:29Are you ready to tell him?
03:31He has afforded the opportunity for prayer. He declined this also.
03:35The warden is now in the process of reading the essential court order.
03:39To the witnesses and to the condemned.
03:41Albert Fish was born Hamilton Howard Fish in Washington, D.C.
03:51On May 19th, 1870, to Randall Fish and Ellen Frances Howell.
03:58Fish's father was American, of English ancestry, and his mother was Scots-Irish-American.
04:04His father was 43 years older than his mother, and aged 75 at the time of his birth.
04:14Fish was his family's youngest child, and had three living siblings, Walter, Annie, and Edwin.
04:22He wished to be known as Albert after a dead sibling, and to escape the nickname Ham and Eggs that he was given at an orphanage,
04:31in which he spent much of his childhood.
04:35Fish's family had a history of mental illness.
04:39His uncle had mania.
04:41One of his brothers was confined in a state mental hospital.
04:44A paternal half-brother suffered from schizophrenia,
04:48and his sister, Annie, was diagnosed with a, quote-unquote, mental affliction.
04:53Three other relatives were diagnosed with mental illnesses,
04:58and his mother had oral and or visual hallucinations.
05:02October 16th, 1875, Fish's father, a fertilizer manufacturer and a former riverboat captain,
05:19suffered a fatal heart attack at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station.
05:24His mother then put him into St. John's Orphanage in Washington, D.C.,
05:30where he was frequently physically abused.
05:34However, Fish began to enjoy the physical pain brought by the beatings.
05:41By 1880, Fish's mother secured a government job and was able to remove him from the orphanage.
05:47In 1882, at age 12, Fish began a relationship with a telegraph boy.
05:55The youth introduced Fish to such practices as drinking urine and eating feces.
06:03Fish began visiting public baths, where he could watch other boys undress,
06:09spending a great portion of his weekends on those visits.
06:13Throughout his life, he would write obscene letters to women
06:18whose names he acquired from classified advertising and matrimonial agencies.
06:24By 1890, at age 20, Fish moved to New York City.
06:30There, he engaged in male prostitution and began molesting and raping boys,
06:36mostly less than six years old.
06:38In 1898, Fish's mother arranged a marriage for him
06:44with Anna Mary Hoffman, who was nine years his junior.
06:50They had six children,
06:51Albert, Anna, Gertrude, Eugene, John, and Henry Fish.
06:57In 1903, Fish was arrested for grand larceny,
07:01convicted and incarcerated in Sing Sing Prison.
07:05Fish later recounted an incident in which a male lover took him to a wax museum,
07:12where he was fascinated by a bisection of a human penis,
07:16and subsequently became obsessed with sexual mutilation.
07:22Several years later, around 1910, Fish was working in Wilmington, Delaware,
07:28where he met a 19-year-old man named Thomas Bedden.
07:30He took Bedden to where he was staying,
07:34and the two began a sadomasochistic relationship.
07:38It is unclear whether the sadomasochism was consensual on Bedden's part,
07:42but Fish's later confession implied that Bedden was intellectually disabled.
07:49After ten days, Fish took Bedden to, quote,
07:53an old farmhouse, unquote,
07:55where he tortured him over two weeks.
07:58Fish eventually tied Bedden up and cut off half of his penis.
08:05I shall never forget his scream or the look he gave me, Fish later recalled.
08:11He originally intended to kill Bedden,
08:13cut off his body, and take it home,
08:16but he feared the hot weather would draw attention.
08:19Instead, Fish poured peroxide over the wound,
08:24wrapped it in a Vaseline-covered handkerchief,
08:26left a ten-dollar bill,
08:28kissed Bedden goodbye,
08:30and left.
08:33That's one of the fucking strangest things I've ever read aloud.
08:38Took the first train I could get back home.
08:41Never heard what became of him,
08:42or tried to find out,
08:44Fish recalled.
08:46In January 1917,
08:48Fish's wife left him for John Straub,
08:51a handyman who boarded with the Fish family.
08:54Fish was subsequently forced to raise his children as a single parent.
09:00Oh, God.
09:01Worst fucking dad ever.
09:03After his arrest,
09:05Fish told a newspaper
09:06that when his wife left him,
09:08she took nearly every possession the family owned.
09:12Fish began to have auditory hallucinations.
09:16He once wrapped himself in a carpet,
09:18saying that he was following the instructions of John the Apostle.
09:21Okay.
09:22It was about this time
09:25that Fish began to indulge in self-harm
09:28by embedding needles into his groin and abdomen.
09:31After his arrest,
09:33x-rays revealed that Fish
09:35had at least 29 needles
09:37lodged in his pelvic region.
09:40He also hid himself repeatedly
09:42with a nail-studded paddle,
09:44and inserted wool doused with lidar fluid
09:48into his anus
09:49and set it light.
09:51While Fish was never thought to have physically attacked
09:53or abused his children,
09:55he did encourage them
09:56and their friends
09:57to paddle his buttocks
09:59with the same nail-studded paddle
10:01he used to abuse himself.
10:03What the fuck?
10:04He breathed on them and said,
10:06Receive the Holy Spirit.
10:10If you forgive anyone's sins,
10:13their sins are forgiven.
10:15If you do not forgive them,
10:18they are not forgiven.
10:20Around 1919,
10:37Fish stabbed an intellectually disabled boy
10:40in Georgetown.
10:42He often chose people
10:44who were either mentally disabled
10:46or African-American
10:47as his victims,
10:48later explaining that he assumed
10:51these people would not be missed
10:53when killed.
10:56Fish would later claim
10:57to have occasionally paid boys
10:59to procure other children for him.
11:02Fish tortured, mutilated,
11:05and murdered young children
11:07with his quote-unquote
11:08implements of hell,
11:10a meat cleaver,
11:11a butcher knife,
11:12and a small hand saw.
11:15Because the guy, you know what?
11:18Because it's nice thing
11:20to play with everybody
11:21just because he can play
11:23with everybody.
11:24On July 11, 1924,
11:27Fish found 8-year-old Beatrice Keel
11:30playing alone on her parents' farm
11:32on Staten Island, New York.
11:35He offered her money
11:36to come and help him
11:37look for rhubarb.
11:39She was about to leave the farm
11:41when her mother
11:42chased Fish away.
11:45Fish left,
11:46but returned later
11:47to Keel's barn,
11:49where he tried to sleep,
11:50but was discovered
11:51by Beatrice's father
11:53and forced to leave.
11:56In 1924,
11:5850-year-old Fish,
11:59suffering from psychosis,
12:01felt that God
12:02was commanding him
12:03to torture
12:04and sexually mutilate children.
12:06Shortly before
12:09he abducted Grace Budd,
12:11Fish attempted to test
12:12his implements of hell
12:14on a 10-year-old child
12:16he had been molesting
12:17named Cyril Quinn.
12:19Quinn and his friend
12:21were playing box ball
12:22on a sidewalk
12:23when Fish asked them
12:25if they had eaten lunch.
12:27When they said
12:28that they had not,
12:29he invited them
12:30into his apartment
12:31for sandwiches.
12:33While the two boys
12:34were wrestling
12:35on Fish's bed,
12:36they dislodged
12:37his mattress.
12:38Underneath was a knife,
12:40a small handsaw,
12:41and a meat cleaver.
12:44They became frightened
12:45and ran out of the apartment.
12:52Little Jack Horner
12:55sat in a corner
12:57eating a Christmas pie.
13:00He put in his thumb
13:03and pulled out a plum.
13:06and said,
13:07what a good boy ever.
13:11During the night
13:12of July 14th, 1924,
13:159-year-old Francis McDonnell
13:17was reported missing
13:19after he failed
13:20to return home
13:21after playing catch
13:22with friends
13:23in Port Richmond,
13:24Staten Island.
13:24A search was organized
13:27and his body was found
13:29hanging from a tree
13:30in a wooded area
13:31near his home.
13:33He had been sexually assaulted
13:34and strangled
13:36with his suspenders.
13:39According to an autopsy,
13:41McDonnell had also
13:42suffered extensive
13:42lacerations
13:43to his legs
13:44and abdomen
13:45and his left hamstring
13:47had almost entirely
13:48been stripped
13:49of its flesh.
13:51Fish refused to claim
13:53responsibility for this,
13:55although he later stated
13:56that he intended
13:57to castrate the boy
13:58but fled
13:59when he heard
14:00someone approaching
14:01the area.
14:02McDonnell's friends
14:03told the police
14:04that he was taken
14:05by an elderly man
14:07with a gray mustache.
14:09A neighbor
14:10also told the police
14:11he observed the boy
14:13with a similar-looking man
14:15walking along
14:16the grassy path
14:17into the nearby woods.
14:20Frances's mother,
14:21Anna McDonnell,
14:23said she saw
14:23the same man
14:24earlier that day
14:25telling reporters
14:26he came shuffling
14:28down the street
14:29rumbling to himself
14:30and making queer emotions
14:31with his hands.
14:33I saw his thick,
14:34gray hair
14:35and his drooping
14:36gray mustache.
14:38Everything about him
14:38seemed faded
14:39and gray.
14:41This description
14:42resulted in
14:43the mysterious stranger
14:44becoming known
14:45as the Gray Man.
14:47On February 11th, 1927,
14:52three-year-old
14:52Billy Beaton
14:53and his 12-year-old
14:55brother were playing
14:56in the apartment hallway
14:57in Brooklyn
14:57with four-year-old
14:59William Billy Gaffney.
15:01When the 12-year-old
15:02left for his apartment,
15:04both younger boys
15:05disappeared.
15:07Beaton was found
15:07later on the roof
15:08of the apartment.
15:10When asked
15:10what happened to Gaffney,
15:12Beaton said
15:13the bogeyman took him.
15:15Gaffney's body
15:16was never recovered.
15:18Initially,
15:19serial killer
15:20Peter Kutzenowski
15:22was a suspect
15:23in Gaffney's murder.
15:25Then,
15:26Joseph Meehan,
15:27a motorman
15:28on a Brooklyn tram,
15:29saw a picture of fish
15:31in a newspaper
15:32and identified him
15:33as the old man
15:34whom he saw
15:35February 11th,
15:361927.
15:37The man had been
15:39trying to quiet
15:40a little boy
15:40sitting with him
15:41on the tram.
15:43The boy was not
15:44wearing a jacket,
15:45was crying for his mother,
15:47and was dragged
15:48by the man
15:48on and off the tram.
15:52Beaton's description
15:53of the bogeyman
15:54matched fish.
15:56Police matched
15:56the description
15:57of the child
15:57to Gaffney.
16:00Detectives
16:00of the Manhattan
16:01Missing Persons Bureau
16:02were able
16:03to establish
16:04that Fish
16:05was employed
16:06as a house painter
16:07by a Brooklyn
16:08real estate company
16:09during February 1927
16:11and that,
16:12on the day
16:13of Gaffney's disappearance,
16:15he was working
16:15at a location
16:16a few miles
16:17from where
16:17the boy was abducted.

19:58in jail
19:59between his arrest
20:00and trial
20:01on December 22nd
20:031933
20:04he was found
20:05not guilty
20:05in a
20:111934
20:13an anonymous letter
20:28sent to Grace's parents, ultimately led the police to fish. Bud's mother was illiterate
20:35and could not read the letter herself, so she had her son read it to her. The unaltered
20:41letter reads, My dear Mrs. Bud, in 1894 a friend of mine shipped as a deckhand on the
20:48steamer Tacoma, Captain John Davis. They sailed from San Francisco for Hong Kong, China. On
20:56arriving there, he and two others went ashore and got drunk. When they returned, the boat
21:01was gone. At that time, there was famine in China. Meat of any kind was from between one
21:08to three dollars a pound. So great was the suffering among the very poor that all children under
21:1412 were sold for food in order to keep others from starving. A boy or girl under 14 was not
21:21safe in the street. You could go into any shop and ask for steak, chops, or stew meat. Part
21:28of the naked body of a boy or girl would be brought out, and just what you wanted cut from
21:34it. A boy or girl's behind, which is the sweetest part of the body, and sold as veal cutlet, brought
21:41the highest price. John stayed there so long he acquired a taste for human flesh. On his
21:48return to New York, he stole two boys, one seven, one eleven. Took them to his home, stripped
21:54them naked, tied them in a closet, then burned everything they had on. Several times, every
22:01day and night, he spanked them, tortured them, to make their meat good and tender. First, he
22:08killed the eleven-year-old boy because he had the fattest ass, and of course, the most meat
22:13on it. Every part of his body was cooked and eaten, except the head, bones, and guts. He
22:20was roasted in the oven, all of his ass. Boiled, broiled, fried, and stewed. The little boy was
22:27next. Went the same way. At that time, I was living at 409 East 100th Street, near right
22:34side. He told me so often how good human flesh was, I made up my mind to taste it. On Sunday,
22:42June the 3rd, 1928, I called on you at 406 West 15th Street. Brought you pot cheese, strawberries.
22:51We lunched, Brace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her. On the pretense
22:59of taking her to a party, you said yes she could go. I took her to an empty house in Westchester.
23:06I had already picked out. When we got there, I told her to remain outside. She picked wild
23:12flowers. I went upstairs and stripped all my clothes off. I knew if I did not, I would
23:18get her blood on them. When all was ready, I went to the window and called her. Then I
23:25hid in a closet until she was in the room. When she saw me all naked, she began to cry and
23:30tried to run down the stairs. I grabbed her and she said she would tell her mama. First,
23:36I stripped her naked. How she did kick, bite, and scratch. I choked her to death, then cut
23:44her in small pieces so I could take my meat to my rooms, cook, and eat it. How sweet and
23:50tender her little ass was roasted in the oven. It took me nine days to eat her entire body.
23:57I did not fuck her, though. I could have, had I wished. She died a virgin.
24:05Police investigated the letter, and although the story concerning Captain Davis and the famine
24:11in Hong Kong could not be verified, the part of the letter concerning the murder of Grace
24:16was found to be accurate in its descriptions of the kidnapping and subsequent events, though
24:21it was impossible to confirm whether Fish had actually eaten parts of Grace's body.
