00:01As I look around the courtyard, there's nobody there.
00:09I saw earning pieces of metal everywhere.
00:13I saw pieces of luggage.
00:18I had no idea where they came from.
00:23I look around the corner,
00:25and there's bodies everywhere.
00:34As far as I can see, just broken up bodies.
00:39That's all I can see, maybe a hundred bodies broken up into little pieces.
00:44Arms and legs and heads and everything.
00:48So, right away I'm freaking out.
00:50And then a body comes falling out of the sky and lands right in front of me.
00:58Boom!
01:00Loud and just breaks up when it hits the ground.
01:20Turn a glass in.

06:46media coverage of the disaster that began with the north tower 17 minutes earlier meant flight 175's
06:54impact at 903 was the only one of the four attacks to be televised live around the world
07:04well now you're watching bbc news 24 it's our business coverage of course we have some remarkable
07:08pictures coming in from new york which we can go to now and they show us that one of the world's
07:14tallest buildings right in the heart of the business district of manhattan the world trade center
07:19appears to be on fire as you can see something has clearly happened towards the top of the building
07:25and these are very dramatic live pictures coming into the bbc right now good evening everyone good
07:30morning actually we have uh breaking news this out of uh downtown manhattan a plane has allegedly
07:36crashed into the world trade center you're looking at live pictures right now from news chopper seven
07:42a plane is crashed into the side of the world trade center details at this hour very sketchy let me just
07:47get a better look right now okay go ahead the um i said the hole takes about
07:57just about six seven floors were taken out and there's more explosions right now hold on people
08:02are running hold on hold on just a moment we've got an explosion inside
08:06the building is exploding right now you got people running up the street
08:09i don't know what's going on and as you can see black smoke is pouring out of two gaping holes we've
08:16had uh there we see a helicopter going by this there's a further there's a further dramatic explosion
08:28we're just witnessing there we're going to go to their coverage for a while and uh you know fight it
08:33something uh if you're taking a look now you can see that we've just had another explosion and that
08:40is considerably lower and is that in the other building is that what i'm witnessing it appears
08:46that the there is more and more fire and smoke enveloping the very top of the building and as fire crews
08:52that looks like a second plane that's just a plane go in that that just exploded i just saw another
09:12plane coming in from the side you did i did that was out yes and that's the second explosion you
09:17could see the plane come in just from the right hand side of the screen so this looks like it is
09:23some sort of a concerted effort to attack the world trade center that is underway in downtown new york
09:31here's a replay of the videotape
09:36in the second that looks like a good-sized plane came in and hit the world trade center from the other
09:42side so this is obviously or would seem to be and again i'm dealing in speculation but it would seem
09:47like there is a concerted attack against one of the towers of the world trade center underway
09:54this is the shot again this is moments ago of this of this second plane
09:59coming in and this is now in slow motion oh this is terrifying awful to watch powerless
10:10is a horror
10:17you
10:19are
10:21good-bye my dear my dear my dear my dear my to have a short episode of the

10:42Guys, can you go ahead and report that? Take one down.
10:45We have the big smoke smoke coming from the World Trade Center.
11:12There is a significant chaos in New York at the moment, massive evacuation.
11:16All landings and takeoffs, aviation in the United States has been ground to a halt
11:21as authorities try to determine how to put a stop to these unfolding explosions and apparent terrorist attacks.
11:28Officiellement, not yet in campagne, but the President of the Republic has still met
11:32one of his future rivals for the presidential, Alain Madelin, who came in quality local.
11:38Well, we interrompt the course of this journal to move directly to New York.
11:42You have seen that a terrible accident of an avion came to happen in the middle of New York.
11:46An avion was encased in one of the tours of the World Trade Center.
11:49Our permanent correspondent, Ulysse Gosset.
11:52Ulysse, do you have any details on this terrible accident?
11:55Well, the World Trade Center came to be secoued by an explosion.
12:00And a gigantic flame came out of the tour which dominates New York,
12:04south of Manhattan.
12:06We currently see, in direct, on the American television,
12:09this spectacular absolutely impressive and terrible in the same time.
12:12The two tours, so, which are in the Hudson River,
12:15in New York,
12:16enrobés of smoke smoke,
12:18an enormous smoke smoke,
12:20and an avion,
12:21which came again,
12:22in a few minutes,
12:24to enter into the World Trade Center,
12:26with this enormous geyser of fire,
12:30around the second tour,
12:32which is on the left,
12:33when we look at the Statue of Liberty.
12:35According to the first information we have,
12:38it would be a small commuter plane,
12:40an avion of transit between airports,
12:42which would have percut the tour of the World Trade Center.
12:45The impact of Flight 175 also did some minor damage to the already burning north tower,
12:51as some of the windows on the east face,
12:54nearest to the south tower,
12:56blew out,
12:57the moment the pressure wave generated by the fireball hit them,
13:01worsening the fires in the north tower.
13:04After the plane,
13:06passed through the tower,
13:07part of the plane's landing gear,
13:09and fuselage,
13:10came out,
13:11the north side of the skyscraper,
13:13and crashed through the roof,
13:14and two of the floors,
13:16of 45 through 47 Park Place,
13:19between West Broadway and Church Street,
13:21600 feet north,
13:23of the former World Trade Center.
13:25Three floor beams,
13:27at the top of the building were destroyed,
13:29causing major structural damage.
13:32Some fire companies,
13:34evacuated Marriott guests,
13:36that were on the upper floors,
13:38being followed,
13:39by elevator mechanic,
13:40Robert Graff,
13:42and two employees with master keys,
13:44Joseph Keller,
13:46the hotel's executive housekeeper,
13:48and Abdul Malahi,
13:50an audio visual technician,
13:52assisting with the law school forum,
13:54who was the only civilian Arab,
13:57that died on 9-11.
13:59The evacuation effort,
14:01was led by Keller,
14:02Richard Fetter,
14:03the hotel's resident manager,
14:05and Nancy Castillo,
14:07human resources head,
14:08at Marriott World Trade Center,
14:10and Marriott Financial Center.
14:12Fetter,
14:13attempted to get a new version,
14:15of the hotel's registry,
14:16but their computer system,
14:18had shut down,
14:19so he found,
14:20the most recently printed copy,
14:21and a set of emergency phone numbers.
14:23People who were escaping,
14:25the tower crashes,
14:26especially the north tower,
14:28also stopped,
14:29at the hotel.
14:30These people numbered,
14:31at a thousand or more.
14:33This is in part,
14:34due,
14:35to a door,
14:36at the north face,
14:37of the building,
14:38facing the north tower.
14:39The people in the lobby,
14:41moved away,
14:42from the north tower,
14:43walking south,
14:44through the hotel,
14:45until they reached,
14:46the tall ship's,
14:47bar and grill,
14:48which opened,
14:49on the Liberty Street.
14:50A police officer,
14:51stood at the exit,
14:52stopping civilians,
14:53from crossing the street,
14:55whenever debris,
14:56was fallen.
15:22there's a none of the victims,
15:23in the hospital,
15:24and the well.
15:25I would run.

22:51The lobby was filled with debris, but nonetheless acted as a shield for firemen, police, and hotel staff.
23:05The lobby was filled with debris, but nonetheless acted as a shield for firemen, police, and hotel staff.
23:18Abdu was killed in Yemen, Abdu loved music and played keys in a band before becoming the audio-visual engineer at the Marriott Hotel.
23:37He was known among colleagues as being incredibly polite and only opening up with his wife and two sons who he was trying to get visas for so that they could join him from Yemen before the September 11th attacks.
23:51But his formality also garnered him.
23:53But his formality also garnered him a great deal of respect, and he was well-liked among coworkers and friends.
23:58When the tower was struck, Abdu risked his own life to help save the lives of others.
24:05Survivor Don Monroe said of Malahi,
24:08Abdu saved my life because we were told not to evacuate the hotel by management via the intercom system before the intercom system was destroyed by the second plane crash.
24:19Abdu took it upon himself to alert the remaining guests that they must leave.
24:25Survivor Don Monroe said of Malahi,
24:28I was waiting in my room when I heard him shouting in the hallway.
24:32I opened the door and he told me I must leave immediately.
24:36He escorted me to the stairways before continuing on to save other guests.
24:41He is constantly in my thoughts.
24:43He is my guardian angel.
24:45I love this man whom I met only once.
24:48It is still hard for me to comprehend his sacrifice for strangers.
24:52Abdu was a very special man indeed.
24:55Before the collapse, there were seven firemen from engine company number 74 in the middle of the hotel on the 21st floor, four of whom died.
25:10Around 17 people in the evacuation efforts were still alive on the third and fourth floors.
25:16Three firefighters on these floors went upstairs to find a fireman who was radioing a mayday signal, Michael Brennan.
25:26On the half of the building that was nearer to the south tower, three civilians and two firemen trapped on the third floor escaped to the second floor by crawling through an opening in a wall on an I-beam which probably fell from the tower.
25:41In the lobby, firefighters began exiting the building to get reinforcements.
25:47Joseph Keller and Fire Lieutenant Bob Nagel were trapped by debris and the other firefighters began trying to cut away the debris around them using saws.
25:58While this happened, the north tower collapsed.
26:02I hold this way.
26:14Yeah it seems like it just sort of went through.
26:18We will see it there, we can go down.
26:27All the smoke people are not going down.
26:29Look at the steel. Look at the steel.
26:31Like a mirror.
26:37Fuck!
26:39Be advised the tower is down.
26:41Be advised the north tower is down.
26:43All personnel be advised the north tower is down.
26:49What a mercy. Holy shit.
26:51Be advised the whole north tower is down.
26:57That's it. That's the biggest disaster in the world.
27:11Probably. Right there.
27:21The collapse of the north tower at 1028 destroyed
27:25the rest of the hotel.
27:27Aside from a small section surrounding
27:29the southern stairwell.
27:31The section would have collapsed
27:33if not for the reinforcements made
27:35after the 1993 bombing.
27:37There were 14 survivors trapped in this section
27:40on the second floor.
27:42This included 13 firemen
27:44from Company 74
27:46and hotel guest Frank Rezano
27:49who had evacuated from his 19th floor room.
27:52The group found a hole in the building
27:54and threaded either a rug
27:56or draped through it.
27:57Then climbed down onto the pile of debris.
28:00Keller and the three firemen
28:02who went to rescue Michael Brennan
28:04died from the second collapse.
28:06Eight firemen from Brooklyn Heights
28:08Engine 205
28:10including Scott Davidson
28:12father of celebrity Pete Davidson
28:14likely died from the collapse
28:16after saving around 900 people.
28:20All the firemen still in the lobby escaped
28:23and Richard Fetter survived.
28:25Bill Marriott, the businessman who owned the hotel,
28:47delivered a speech to his employees
28:49on September 20th where he thanked them
28:51for their work on the 11th
28:53and announced they would be employed
28:55until at least October 5th
28:57and covered by the hotel's health insurance
28:59for a year.
29:01The guests staying at the Marriott World Trade Center
29:04and the Marriott Financial Center
29:06which was also damaged during the attacks
29:09were sent to seven other Marriott hotels
29:12in the city.
29:14At those locations, security was increased
29:18and cancellation fees were waived.
29:21On the afternoon of the attacks,
29:23photographer Thomas E. Franklin
29:26captured the now iconic image
29:28raising the flag at ground zero
29:31depicting the U.S. flag being raised
29:33by firefighters upon a flagpole
29:36believed to have been Marriott property
29:38located on what remained of the hotel grounds.

31:41In January 2002, the remnants of the hotel were dismantled to make way for reconstruction.
31:49The Marriott Corporation was then offered an opportunity to rebuild the hotel in the same location within the World Trade Center site as its lease, which was signed until 2094, had not expired.
32:04Marriott declined the offer, and in October 2003, the Port Authority voted on an agreement under which the host Marriott Corporation would, quote,
32:15surrender the premises, unquote, resulting in termination of the lease, thus giving the land to the national September 11 memorial and museum.
32:25The museum received the displayed Marriott flag.
32:29The building and its survivors were featured in the television special documentary film Hotel Ground Zero, which premiered on September 11, 2009 on the History Channel.
32:42Some survivors only found out after watching the documentary that others they had met during the attacks were still alive.
32:52In 2013, there was a charity run in the area to honor Ruben Correa, a firefighter who died as a part of the group on the 21st floor.
33:09There was also a lot of folks that I made for this movie that was really good, but it was really good.
33:15If you feel that if you guys were still there, you might see that you're the only person, you're the only person in your head.
