00:00to our new house making it home now the real work begins just ripping it apart with my bare hands

00:28he said I mean I was still waiting for the prognosis a double break in the leg is extremely serious
00:36he's going to be out of action for everything my dad has come over for a working holiday
00:48Laura is a friend of mine basically we're doing stucco plastering yeah he could make
00:57comedians in Italy skill set yeah jazz has definitely pulled out the bag shall we
01:08it is so cool
01:19it's been a couple of months since Jasmine John and their kids moved into their dream forever home
01:24on the Costa del Sol and two weeks since John's accident put him very much out of action the
01:31frustration is off the charts we were just about to get the the whip cracked with things jazz was
01:37getting quieter at work and we could start to focus on stuff and then I've managed to break my leg in two
01:45places I would say probably one of the second or third most frustrating and darkest days of my life
01:52since his accident everything has ground to a halt with the help of local builder Carlos and his team
02:01Jasmine and John had started phase one of the build tackling the first floor bedrooms in the family bathroom but
02:08they're a long way from completion we've had to say to Carlos that we haven't got anything ready for you to do right now
02:15John is really worried that we're going to lose him because he's going to have other work obviously he's going to be doing different things the chances of us finding someone else to help us do this renovation in a hurry are very slim
02:30as their summer deadline is now just over four months away there can be no more breaks in this renovation we don't have a plan B and our schedule as far already out the window as it is will be further out the window in that pool and there's no water in that pool so it will land with a big splash and break into pieces
02:52we really need to get our skates on time is passing
03:02and it's not just the build that's been put on hold one minute you're training for a marathon you're setting
03:10your sights on the marathon the next minute you're just setting your sights on healing I even remember lying
03:16on the paddle court with my broken leg thinking crumbs how will I run a marathon with this injury
03:27whilst he is obviously very disappointed he's taking it better than I thought he would
03:34I almost thought at one point he's probably going to say that he'll do it in a wheelchair or something
03:41because he's so determined today we've got a follow-up appointment at the hospital to look at John's leg
03:53I think they're going to x-ray it just to check that it's healing okay now begins the ordeal of getting
04:02him in and out of the car if I lift it up and you whip out the pillows
04:19all right let me get ahead of you freedom
04:23okay oh it's the closest you've come to a hug for ages
04:32it's a 30 minute drive up the coast to the hospital in Marbella my taxi driver
04:51nurse general dog's body saviour
04:55and also guess what friday is valentine's day what are you going to take me out for dinner
05:03where are we going to go
05:09get the bandage off and we are at a point in the recovery it's like a landmark the next few
05:15landmarks are bandage off being able to walk on a walking frame being able to walk on crutches being
05:21able to walk on one crutch being able to walk on no crutches and a couple of hours later
05:40the hospital visit went really well and the doctor said that he looks like he's improving a lot
05:47his poor leg does still look really swollen and kind of looks a weird colour but it's really good
05:54progress overall and well I can't wait for him to be back on his feet to be honest
06:01keep trying to work out how to hold me that looks romantic
06:03it's very different the way they treat a leg break now there's no cast so you've got basically a
06:28broken leg that's just there according to the doctors they say it's actually better for the
06:35recovery but I guess that's the the advancement of modern medicine
06:40I'd say it's it's been almost as challenging and stressful as having a newborn baby
06:57it's been that life changing
07:03with his bandage off and a bit of confidence back over the next few days
07:08john's moving around the house a little more it feels like it's been such a long time since john's
07:14accident but he is making amazing progress they've said to him that he can start walking
07:23with the crutches just putting a tiny bit of weight on the injured leg he's been doing lots
07:29of things like loading the dishwasher and even a bit of cooking the only problem he has
07:35when he makes food he makes it and then he can't go anywhere because he can't hold a plate
07:39and walk with crutches bless him with renewed positivity jasmine and john are keen to get phase one of
07:48the build tackling the first floor with its three bedrooms and two bathrooms going again
07:55and have asked carlos to come back to work in the family bathroom
07:58oh such a relief to have carlos back uh with his lovely smile and always you know has this amazing
08:11can-do attitude a poco loco un poco loco no i've been hating having that bathroom just sat like that
08:21empty like a cave for all this time so it is really nice to get things back on track and resume the
08:29work that we've started it had been left with the walls and floor prepped and the ceiling lowered for
08:36spotlights no suite or tiles yet but the lights can go in although not in the spots carlos had planned
08:42i'm not sure about the bathroom how quick it's going to be
09:10there's a lot to do and also some of the stuff um like the underfloor heating carlos hasn't done
09:18before it's quite unusual to have underfloor heating in spain so he's going to get someone in
09:25to help him with that at the moment i'm kind of feeling relieved to get the project going again and
09:32to get things moving but at the same time this sort of knot in my stomach of dread that something's
09:42going to go wrong with work back underway and the bathroom suite and tiles now ordered online to a
09:50local business jasmine's called in a decorator to continue where they left off in the kids bedrooms
09:56my dad has come over for a working holiday
10:04right hopefully we haven't forgotten anything yeah well it's not that far to the shop no exactly it's
10:13good to have someone like my dad that you can rely on to do a brilliant job and you know i i'm just
10:19really grateful to him for coming all this way to do some painting and decorating you're right dad do
10:26you want some tea yes please love no sugar no sugar i've been painting ever since i was 12 years old so
10:34that's 58 years ago uh i used to go with me dad at you know when i was at school sadly me dad died and
10:43we needed money coming into the house so i picked up the toolbox and went on yeah it's lovely to come
10:50and it's great to be able to do something that the kids are going to like i think that you know it's
10:55something that they'll remember remember me for i'm sure you'll paint over it in a couple of years
10:59hopefully i'll come and paint over it myself what do you think then there's a lot of work to be done
11:04isn't there here looking around a load of work to do
11:07is it worse than you were expecting well it won't be finishing it while i'm here this
11:15for two weeks no but hopefully we can get those bedrooms done he's going to start with albion's
11:20bedroom i've moved everything out of there already and i've put albie temporarily in with his sister
11:27and what we're going to do is wallpaper one wall we've got this really amazing
11:32rainbow vomit wallpaper and it's it's like a big sort of mural almost i think i'm just trying to
11:40deliver what albion's asked for but in a kind of way that will look nice and tasteful my kids you know
11:48they've had a lot of upheaval with moving from the uk out to spain this is their home that's why i
11:54kind of have indulged them a little bit with what they want in their rooms so you see we're just a
12:04blank canvas at the moment really yeah and we've already done a little bit of work in here so it's
12:10just had a quick coat of paint to tart it up a little bit but it's still very basic and all the look
12:17at all the electrics me and dad get on really well we have a huge amount of mutual respect we have a
12:28laugh we have a very loving relationship my dad he is a funny character
12:37i remember when i was probably in my mid-20s
12:40he said to me you're the head of the family now and i was like i don't want to be the head of the
12:47family i'm busy like partying and stuff we would do anything for each other but we don't expect
12:57anything of each other apart from coming to decorate the children's bedrooms of course
13:03shall we put a little bit on the wall try it yeah try it just to just to see how it looks
13:08there you go it's quite nice what do you think do you like it or is it too yellowy no i like it
13:14i think i'll be all like it shame john can't come upstairs to have a look
13:19he'll probably hate it take a picture i will take a picture i like it
13:28but in the picture it looks so much darker
13:30why look looks like someone's peed up the wall it does look darker doesn't it just take
13:44mixing it with a drop of white you can see we're going to come up with a much paler yellow
13:50which might it still looks yellow next to the white i think that's better i think it is
13:58once it's on all the wall you know yeah i think it looks loads better yeah
14:07i mean it's great that we are getting things moving again that makes me very happy but we've had
14:14such a setback with the broken leg and there is so much still to do here i don't know what the
14:23timeline's even looking like now it's going to be a lot of hard work to get everything finished by the
14:29summer
14:46with carlos's team working the odd day to prep the bathroom for tiling
14:51and jasmine's dad peter busy in albin's bedroom slow but steady progress is being made on the first floor
14:59we spent some time online and john found this amazing colorful beautiful mural wallpaper which
15:08my dad's going to hang in albi's room
15:13so it's the moment of truth we've got to open it up and see if it is as good in reality as it looked
15:23online jasmine has ordered the paper from a company in sweden who have printed the sheets
15:28to her measurements for the one wall it's cost around 300 pounds oh it's lovely i was skeptical
15:39i was skeptical about indulging our children in rainbow wallpaper but no but this is nice
15:44it does look nice yeah it doesn't it is like classy is it classy classy rainbow vomit it does look like a
15:52rainbow's vomited i'm worried it looks a bit garish they've already put these lines to cut it off i just
16:00want to make sure they put them in the right place and it's going to fit the room which is 97 and a half
16:04so what we should be looking at here is 97 and a half inches plus another four inches and then cut it
16:12so normally when you have wallpaper it's already oh yeah it's already cut isn't it what is it normally
16:18it's not cut it's just on a roll no it's just one roll yeah one strip the point is you've got one
16:24stab at laying a piece of wallpaper like this yeah because you can't just roll a bit off the next
16:29roll and exactly every piece is different yes i'm quite looking forward to seeing what it looks like
16:34when i go up because never having used bespoke wallpapers before or you know custom wallpaper before
16:40it's good that is also going to be really difficult to line each piece up so it looks like a seamless
16:46bit of art well i'll do it for a living mate fair enough that's what he does all the time
16:54the quality of it is beautiful the colors pop so amazingly and i think once it's up on the wall
17:01it's going to be spectacular with painting in albion's bedroom close to completion that paper will be up
17:10on the walls this afternoon
17:16but before jasmine can lend a hand she's got a few hours of a place in the sun work to get through first
17:23so i'm heading off to do my voice over now

17:55shall we crack on i'm jasmine harman and for more than 20 years i've been helping house hunters find
18:01their dream homes overseas today i'll be using all my skills to try and help leslie who's brought
18:07along her mother-in-law carol whilst hubby neil's tied up at work perfect let's move to the next bit
18:13whenever you're ready i am ready the budget for their dream holiday home is 260 000 pounds
18:21yeah let's do 10 again before we head to our first property i want to take these ladies to the central hub
18:27of our search fuengirola's main square called the plaza de la constitution originally opened in 1841
18:34by the town's first mayor it's surrounded by shops cafes and a very pretty church called nuestra
18:41senora del rosario so arthur oh perfect perfect i mean i've done it for a long long time so i think i
18:49know what i'm doing by now hopefully with another couple of episodes beautifully crafted jasmine's
18:59back on site just in time to help her dad the last time i used these over was all when we were painting
19:07the house white i didn't get myself too much of a mess
19:12how do i look dad they were definitely too short in the body for me i don't know if it's my size i'm
19:21not sure if i've got mine or albion's one it feels a bit short in the body yeah i don't even want to
19:27say the word but it reminded me of part of a camel's body i'm ready
19:43oh i think i've split my overalls no they're all right this mural wallpaper there is no margin for
19:50error every piece is unique and so you have to get it right first time and peter's taking it steady
20:00with his apprentice well i'm not planning to ever actually hang the paper but she could oh she can
20:06try one after two or three around maybe jazz can put one up because i'm not going to be here forever
20:14someone's got to be able to carry on in the family you know she could earn 300 pound a day in london
20:20with a with a bit of wallpapering skills time for the master class to begin so all i'm doing is
20:33i'm going to make some marks on the wall that's uh tell us where our paper's gonna end up if we put
20:42it straight against the wall yeah so we've got those marks again and ignore that one yep so is that
20:50when you need this yeah it wants to go all the way down well a little bit more just until so doesn't
20:56hit the skirt jasmine and peter are using a plumb line guided by gravity to give them a perfectly
21:02straight line yeah that looks pretty good so we can put our paper once any tiny imperfections have
21:11been uncovered using a torch and removed look at this whoa it's lovely isn't it pull up pull on pulling
21:19it slowly and with the paper unrolled and cutting to lengths well i can have a rest in there don't
21:28judge cut that all up it's like giant wrapping paper it's the moment of truth
21:34my role my role is the roller roller roll the roller roll i just need a pair of roller skates and
21:46then i'll be they'll have the full complement of roll
21:49and then go up all the way up and down across i can't believe in all these years and decades
22:01the last time i did any wallpapery reviews and a little girl
22:09there we go i'll tell you what you could do jess support that so if it drops you don't tear
22:15it just keep it off the wall yeah yeah it's just like saying this is one this is the most awkward
22:23bit oh is it i've got it on my marks that's that that's that hang on that's gone over yeah we've
22:30got to get there it's gone over that one isn't it so i wanted to help my dad putting the wallpaper up but
22:38he doesn't need my help
22:39he's completely capable of doing it on his own so he let me help a little bit but really he was
22:50doing all the hard stuff i suppose it's like being a parent when you've got a little toddler and you
22:56let them help they make it worse but you let them think they've helped me i think that's what my dad
23:03was doing with me that looks so nice yeah i wouldn't trust myself to do something like this
23:24did you ever expect me to move abroad not really no i mean but i i think it's a great idea
23:32i think it's a great idea do you yeah
23:43daddy it's looking amazing thank you i mean that join looks perfect you've got
23:49four more pieces four more people almost halfway there
23:52and the next day excited that she's finally been able to put a bit of personality into their home
24:04you've got everything out the car i kind of wish i could wait till the whole room was done and show
24:12it to him but if i say to him don't go into your bedroom because i want to keep it as a surprise
24:18it's going to be like a red rag to a ball he won't be able to resist going in there
24:23it's good for him to see it now to see if it meets his expectations and well if it doesn't
24:29that's so cool

24:54oh albi's reaction to his wallpaper was priceless he really loved it what you say to grandad thank you
25:11it's a pleasure mate just to see you happy and what about the rest of the color of the room we'll
25:17just have to get it more colorful because it looks a bit weird when it's really colorful and then it's
25:22just next to white things possibly it's really cool so you're happy is it better than your wildest dreams
25:33um it's basically the same as my wildest dreams is it oh oh i'm so happy that that it looks great
25:44yeah it sort of feels like this is the first thing that we've done in the house
25:51to really make it our own open your eyes
26:00everything that we've done up until now has all just been necessity whereas this
26:06we've chosen and it's it feels quite special
26:10oh astro i forgot you
26:29while progress is being made in albion's bedroom that's largely down to jasmine's
26:33decorated dad peter the family bathroom is causing a few headaches
26:47so i'm just having a little meltdown it feels like the only person i can rely on at the moment
26:53is my dad because he's just been amazing carlos has been ill and that hasn't really helped as well
26:59although you know we can't really progress further with the bathroom until the underfloor heating's done
27:06the underfloor heating guys that he had lined up let him down so i've been trying to find someone else
27:13and they've let me down as well so it just seems like a load of nonsense really when someone says yeah
27:23yeah yeah i can do this job great and then they promise you the world and they don't deliver
27:32it's very difficult to keep it together to be honest i'm ready to throw in the towel
27:40the pressure is weighing heavily the dream of a new life in the sun for her family still looks a long way away
27:47sensing that a pick-me-up might be needed a good friend has flown out for a quick visit

28:06laura is a friend of mine she is also one of my co-presenters on a place in the sun
28:13and we've been friends for a long time i didn't bring sunshine with me sorry i think you might
28:19have brought some other weather with you look at this come on inside you know when things feel a bit
28:25overwhelming it is lovely to have a friendly face someone you know who's been through what you're going
28:32through where's john oh there he is laura's here hi oh john how are you how are you oh
28:42we're all getting cuddles how are you oh when you make a big move aboard i actually think you value
28:49seeing friendly faces much more than you did before how are you finding it kind of living in it and when
28:57there's the mess we're not into the worst of it yet so right i think give it another month
29:03and then it's going to get it's going to be hell yeah had a few setbacks yeah i think it's safe to
29:08say we're slightly behind schedule because of my leg but it will all work out in the end and do you
29:13know what i always think in a renovation project the worst that is now but like like at the end of
29:18the tunnel you're going to forget all of this when you get to the end and you've got that beautiful
29:22products i think it's like having a baby that's how i describe doing a renovation project because
29:27i'm like oh you know it's a bit rubbish in the beginning because you have morning sickness and
29:30you feel a bit rough and you're like oh my word like this is tough then you kind of start to get
29:34to the nice stage where you feel better then it gets difficult again and then at the end you have
29:38the lovely products yeah exactly yeah only difference is a house doesn't answer back a child
29:42no exactly and this is definitely my last one laura's very experienced with renovations
29:54having her there just felt good it felt reassuring i love the color of these doors this is albie's room
30:02wow nice to meet you wow wow wow you like it that's so cool i was like is it paint it's paper right
30:15that's paper oh yeah that's brilliant excuse jaz i've just got to grab something work to do
30:21so albion said he wanted his room to look like a rainbow had vomited in there
30:27did he really he actually said that no no i'm brilliant this looks like you're almost there
30:35though yeah you must be excited i am excited i'm really really excited to get albion back in his room
30:41and we've got lots of really nice little quirky things to go in here that i think he's going to
30:46love it well look i know it's been a bit stressful there's been a lot going on i've got a little treat
30:52for you i'm going to take you somewhere do something fun it's not a spa day do you remember
30:59when we went on our spa day when we were both pregnant it's not a spa day oh no i'm disappointed
31:03now no you're going to love it bring it on come on i'm sensing they're both frustrated that it's not
31:10moved as far forward as they would have liked it to but i think that's a good thing and i think they
31:15they absolutely shouldn't put pressure on themselves they're taking their time to think about how it's
31:19going to work for their lifestyle what the end goal is john we're heading out have a nice time

31:44jazz is going to love going off for a few hours with laura and having some girly time
31:48jazz has been full on since the minute my leg broke and just to get out of the house
31:53and to switch your brain off for a little bit it's gonna it's gonna yeah it's gonna work wonders
32:01a drive up the coast to the other side of marbella is the cultural hot pot that is malaga city
32:07i'm feeling quite excited actually i'm not exactly sure yet what we're doing it's quite nice just to get
32:18out have a day out in malaga we always love coming to the city
32:24in we go i want you to meet victoria hello well i think this is going to be really good for jazz
32:36because it will show her a way that she can upcycle existing and old furniture that she has
32:43making it work in the project but giving a different look to it
32:47victoria is showing laura and jasmine how to give wooden furniture an aged antique finish
32:56they'll be using a simple wooden box to try it out step one is sanding
33:02so what about the prep jazz yeah step two is adding a plaster based glue to create some texture
33:10basically we're doing stucco plastering yeah we could make our millions adding to your skill set yeah
33:18looking beautiful i think i've done one a bit thicker than yours
33:22but that's all right let's see let's see let's see which one comes out the best time for the first coat
33:31of paint i think it's just really important that you have a bit of you time so even if this is like
33:39maybe not the new time that you're expecting no but this is cool it's still a break away from it and
33:46just take like one or two days out of the week where you're like okay yeah if only right
33:53it's not that easy but yeah i should do i i you know speaking to you and in my own head thinking
34:00maybe i do need to get a bit more help just to get the project moving
34:05quickly in the direction that i want it to be moving into because it's pretty tricky at the moment
34:13and with the paint dried it's time for a quick sand and another coat of paint
34:20this is going to look really interesting see now mine you can't see any of the lighter color
34:25and you can't see any of the original blue that you painted on and after another round of drying and
34:30sanding the aged effect is starting to come through this looks at least 100 years old if not 200 years
34:38old i feel like with everything that's been going on over the last few weeks this is almost this was
34:46like a holiday it's really lovely thank you so much well i just love like you know coming to see you
34:54for a little catch-up because although you know we'll send messages and chat on the phone
34:59occasionally actually i never get to see it it's rare it's rare to be in the same place at the same
35:05time that's so cool yeah that is a great fun that is a little transformation oh that was so much fun
35:12thank you well i came in the rain and i'm leaving in the sunshine and i'm leaving jazz with some new
35:22skills and obviously the reassurance that i'm there for her i'm at the end of the phone and she can call
35:28me whenever she wants oh it's been really nice to hang out with laura this afternoon i really take on
35:36board her advice about making sure not to burn myself out making sure i have some me time looking
35:44after myself that's something i might think about
35:57despite their best intentions progress is currently pretty slow john's still limited in what he can do
36:04and the delays in the family bathroom aren't helping all jasmine can do is plow on with the
36:09one room that's now largely down to her although she's keen to introduce another generation to the
36:17family trade it's like playing a musical instrument i was looking online for some kind of bright
36:28colored bedside cabinets and i came across something that was a graffiti bedside cabinet
36:37lovely oh that's great it was really expensive and i thought graffiti i can buy a few cans of spray paint
36:50and we could do something like that to the old bedside cabinet that he's already got
36:57so that's what we did
37:01you can do spots or you can do squiggles or whatever you like
37:08is that good i really like it helps very creative are we gonna paint this top yeah
37:16have you ever done graffiti before no good
37:19maybe albie you'll grow up and you'll be as famous as banksy and i'll keep this it'll be worth a fortune
37:33having ordered a load of stuff online in parts recommended by their interior designer
37:39there's a steady flow of packages arriving
37:43but this is something for alvin's room
37:47i think he's gonna love it
37:51look at that it's gonna be great
37:56oh
37:56and jasmine is keen to keep as much of it a surprise as possible
38:05oh trying to keep everything hidden it's just impossible because there's so much stuff that we
38:11need you know that's here and we need to get it out and do it but because they're they live in this
38:17house so i can't i can't guarantee that they won't walk into one of these rooms at any moment
38:24and see everything that's why i've been trying to hide stuff up there in the top cupboards where
38:30they can't reach mostly everything's still in boxes
38:36and just need to find the time the right time to open everything up and and start building it

39:00you all right ellie i'm i was saying sticky cheese to astro and i was sitting next to the
39:06boy who's yelling for thinking me to know because he wants some sticky cheese you got toothpaste all

39:22jasmine and john have a long afternoon of assembling ahead of them but the finishing line is in sight
39:33jaz has definitely pulled out the bag
39:34i would like to take some responsibility but i don't think i can really take any responsibility
39:42all i did was action a few shelves to be put up and curtains to be put up the rest is jazz
39:49it's crunch time albion's room is ready and we're going to show him i am keeping my fingers
40:01crossed that it will be exactly what he requested he wanted rainbow vomit and i'm pretty sure we're
40:09we're going to give that to him are you ready are you excited do you like your sign on the door

40:29ironically albion's bedroom before we moved in had a lot of very bright colors in there
40:38pink pink purple yellow
40:41it was a lot of crazy colors
40:58it's so cool it's gone from being really ghastly colors to being so much more fun and lively
41:10it just feels somewhere really vibrant and uplifting
41:19what do you see that you didn't know was coming this neon platypus that neon noodles
41:26what are your two favorite things on planet earth platypuses and noodles
41:31how do you like your desk and your new chair it's really cool
41:43and what about your bedside table do you think it fits the rainbow vomit theme yes this is basically my
41:53dream bedroom it has everything i've always wanted like a beanbag chair a lava lamp i'm glad you love it
42:01darling so many things aren't there so many things to look at
42:06the wallpaper is probably my favorite thing in that room it looks absolutely stunning
42:11what about the rug have you even noticed the rug yeah
42:18and if you turn over and lie on your back and look up to the ceiling you might notice something else
42:23i know it's all really cool
42:27the biggest job in albion's bedroom was putting in the door to the balcony that was previously only
42:33accessible from the hallway so you can sit out here listening to the wind chime it's so nice
42:51now because albion has his own little balcony hello astro there he is hello astro
42:59if he wants to sit out there with friend or you know just chill out he can have his own little
43:07outside space that's directly accessible from his bedroom very relaxing out here isn't it
