Democratic Senator for California Josh Becker attended the first day of activities at COP30 in Brazil on Monday, amid US President Donald Trump's decision not to send high-level representatives to Belem.

Becker strongly criticised Trump for his stance on climate change, accusing him of deceiving the American public by dismissing the issue as a hoax.

This comes amid increasing concerns that the industrialised world, including the US, UK and EU are backtracking on their commitments to reducing carbon emissions, while commitments by others such as China have also drawn criticism.

"Whatever he said to the UN, I agree that he's a liar! He knows better… He's smarter than that. I mean they're deceiving the American people", Becker stated.

He argued that Trump’s denial allows for greater oil drilling and deep cuts to environmental programmes, including carbon capture projects in California.

"They won't care because he believes that what he says is the gospel and they will listen to him, and we have to get to them, American public, by any means necessary to say: 'no, this is happening'," added the senator.

Becker pointed out that increasingly intense hurricanes, wildfires, and other extreme weather events affecting the US is clear evidence of the growing climate crisis that demands coordinated global action.

"It's important for our companies to be here, for our legislators to be here, for all our mayors who are in Rio, to be here to say ‘we are in’. And that's the message I'm giving", he said.

Meanwhile, Trump has openly expressed scepticism over climate change, calling it "the greatest hoax of all time." His absence from COP30 stem from his rejection of multilateral environmental accords such as the Paris Agreement, from which the United States has withdrawn for a second time.

00:00Yeah, he says it's a hoax, which he, whatever he said, the UN, I, I,
00:29I agree. I think he's a liar, right? He's intentionally, he knows better. He's smarter
00:35than that. I mean, they're, it's, it's, they're deceiving the American people. And he believes
00:39that whatever he says, people will believe. And he says, he believed, you know, if he says it's a
00:45hoax, they'll believe it's a hoax. And then they won't care. They won't care that we're opening
00:49out. He's opening up much more land for oil drilling. They won't care that he's cutting
00:54billions and billions and billions of dollars, even for carbon capture projects in California,
00:59for example. They won't care because he believes that what he says is the gospel and they will
01:05listen to him. And we have to get to them, American public by any means necessary to say, no, this is
01:12happening. There's a reason we're having these extended, all these extended hurricanes. There's
01:16a reason we're having these wildfires across the West, or, you know, you have U.S. states that are
01:22affected by wildfires from Canada. There's a reason the hurricanes have stronger force. This is all
01:27climate change. We need global action together, working together.
01:35But it's important for our companies to be here, for our legislators to be here,
01:38for all our mayors who were at Rio to be here to say we are in. And that's the message I'm giving.
01:44One of the reasons I felt like I had to be here is because it is the first COP in the Amazon region.
01:55And it's one thing to read about the Amazon, to see it on TV, but to actually be in the region,
02:02to be in the area, even just landing and looking out at the edges of the Amazon, it brings everything
02:09home. The fact that this is the lungs of the planet, and we don't want to cut those lungs off with
02:15deforestation, whether it be for agriculture or whether it be for oil, which might then,
02:21you know, be coming to California.
