The 30th United Nations Climate Conference (COP30) opened on November 10, in Belem, Brazil, led by COP30 President Andre Corrêa do Lago and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The summit — the first to be held in the heart of the Amazon rainforest — began under a cloud of geopolitical tension, with U.S. seats left empty during the opening session.

In his address, President Lula urged world leaders to “inflict another defeat on climate deniers,” warning that without the Paris Agreement, global temperatures could rise by 5°C by the end of the century.

He added: “If the men who wage war were here, they’d see it’s cheaper to spend $1.3 trillion fighting climate change than $2.7 trillion on war.”

COP30 President Andre Corrêa do Lago called it the “COP of truth and implementation,” while UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell urged delegates to “fight the climate crisis together, not one another.”

00:52a COP that will advance the integration of climate, the economy, activities, job creation, and above all,
00:58a COP that will listen to and believe in science.
01:05And in that sense, Mr. President, thank you for finding the ideal formula to define this COP, which is the COP of Truth.

02:08Proving that if the men who wage war were here in this CP,
02:20they would realize that it is much cheaper to put in $1,300,000,000 to end the climate problem
02:26than to put in $2,700,000,000 to wage war as they did in past years.
02:56But friends, let me be clear, in this arena of 30, your job here is not to fight one another,
03:03your job here is to fight this climate crisis.
