The 30th United Nations Climate Conference (COP30) opened on November 10, in Belem, Brazil, led by COP30 President Andre Corrêa do Lago and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.  The summit — the first to be held in the heart of the Amazon rainforest — began under a cloud of geopolitical tension, with U.S. seats left empty during the opening session.  In his address, President Lula urged world leaders to “inflict another defeat on climate deniers,” warning that without the Paris Agreement, global temperatures could rise by 5°C by the end of the century.
