Democratic Senator Josh Becker has accused U.S. President Donald Trump of deceiving the American people after the president skipped the COP30 climate summit in Brazil. Becker said Trump “knows better” but continues to deny the reality of climate change. His remarks come amid growing global criticism that industrialised nations — including the U.S., U.K., and EU — are backtracking on their emissions pledges.
00:00They're not state-recognized, they don't have access to the same type of funds.
00:11So if you want to be inclusive on other countries, I can do that.
00:20So if you have some of that, we're going to be in charge of the U.N.
00:25Yeah, he says it's a hoax, which whatever he said at the U.N., I agree.
00:30I think he's a liar, right?
00:31He's intentionally, he knows better.
00:34He's smarter than that.
00:36I mean, they're deceiving the American people.
00:39And he believes that whatever he says, people will believe.
00:42And he says, you know, if he says it's a hoax, they'll believe it's a hoax.
00:46And then they won't care.
00:47They won't care that he's opening up much more land for oil drilling.
00:52They won't care that he's cutting billions and billions and billions of dollars, even for carbon capture projects in California, for example.
01:01They won't care because he believes that what he says is the gospel and they will listen to him.
01:06And we have to get to the American public by any means necessary to say, no, this is happening.
01:13There's a reason we're having these extended, all these extended hurricanes.
01:16There's a reason we're having these wildfires across the West or, you know, you have U.S. states that are affected by wildfires from Canada.
01:23There's a reason the hurricanes have stronger force.
01:26This is all climate change.
01:27We need global action together, working together.
01:30But it's important for our companies to be here, for our legislators to be here, for all our mayors who are at Rio to be here to say we are in.
01:43And that's the message I'm giving.
01:44One of the reasons I felt like I had to be here is because it is the first COP in the Amazon region.
01:55And it's one thing to read about the Amazon, to see it on TV, but to actually be in the region, to be in the area, even just landing and looking out at the edges of the Amazon.
02:07It brings everything home, the fact that this is the lungs of the planet and we don't want to cut those lungs off with deforestation, whether it be for agriculture or whether it be for oil, which might then be coming to California.
02:37And that's why we don't want to cut those lungs off with deforestation.
