00:00Totti right watch this yeah no no sit sit down already just getting there very good yeah there
00:11we go and there we go beam sitting blimey isn't it wonderful that at least someone will do
00:18something that you ask when you ask it I didn't want to say anything yeah but you know I just
00:22hope you'd perhaps take some kind of sort of heed from what's going on there oh I thought
00:27they were being trained I didn't realize it was us actually someone's got your hat fuzz get out of it
00:33you come on bean doesn't do that we're back oh I'm loving this scouring Britain sheds for classic
00:43cars a thing of beauty proper special quintessential Brits that's nice a Lee Francis American icons
00:51look at the amount of chrome on the front there and continental curios that is a Lancia Aprilia we're
00:59gonna buy them thank you so much sort them it's the sunroof no please I'm getting out now drive them
01:06and sell them for a tidy profit oh we're in the money this is shed and buried classic cars
01:15we're on our way to Bristol and we're going open mic what do you call a bloke with leaves on his head
01:27Russell ah and that's who we're gonna go and see all right okay got you all right yeah now what's uh
01:35what's Russell's poison I'm not quite sure what's poison is on the phone he didn't seem to have been
01:40poisoned yeah yeah I think he's got an eclectic mix I think that's what we normally call it yeah a bit of
01:47old and new four wheels and two he's got four wheels yeah I think he might have the odd two wheel
01:53yeah yeah cool and he probably might have something in between like a three wheel you never know that's
01:59true yeah they do exist it doesn't really matter whether it's British American Italian Scandinavian
02:06yeah whatever yeah as long as it's got some character about it that's what matters isn't
02:12it yeah well you get that kind of moment of excitement that's what really rose our boat is
02:17what's in here that we've never seen before yeah and if it's affordable let's buy it exactly whether
02:24we leave Russell's with a Nissan Leaf for a Model T Ford with Leaf Springs who knows but bristle here we
02:32come tell me mate right there's a there's a minor there there's something over there yeah tell me I
02:42mean what what's your poison British cars any cars I mean tell me British cars so Russell tell me about
02:48you mate so restoring stuff I'm a welder and then you collect the odd motor at the same time yeah we'll
02:53have a mosey about a little rummage in there is everything for sale everything's for sale yeah
02:58everything's for sale even you yeah I've seen the size of your wallet yeah yeah so you know there
03:03won't be much yeah exactly I'll be buying the odd spanner yeah yeah great hey Ross fantastic mate
03:09well we'll have a quick go out here yeah and then we'll be in there yeah yeah thanks mate
03:13happy day start outside yeah let's go over here come on mate we'll see you next to the ubiquitous
03:23Morris minor he's got a rather rare a British saloon that I think is a standard 12 or 14 what what
03:35Austin no standard standard was a Midlands based manufacturer who built cars and tractors before the
03:42brand name disappeared when they merged with triumph the standard 14 was a popular car of the early 50s
03:49but this one has seen better days you would lose your shirt on that wouldn't you you would have to
03:55restore it out of love not money you know where it's probably more likely to be destined for where
04:00banger races oh no really how do you fancy yeah going inside well you better throw the dog's ball
04:08go all right you go and get it where is it down Shep come on you've got to be of a certain age to
04:13remember that inside Russell is going for the TARDIS of the year award with a collision of commercial
04:22curios that is a van body on something else maybe American iron the interior is a little bit some
04:31care warm would you like to take a look sir stationary engines we got ourselves a little Lister D
04:40stationary engine yeah that's lovely on the trolley so that's that's great even better it's ready to
04:45sit in front of look at those country shows yeah assorted bric-a-brac hold on Q9 line I tell you
04:52what mate yeah that would be an open shut case and another classic Brit now that looks really rather
05:05nice yeah doesn't it now come on then tell me Austin what it's a 10 hen released in 1932 the
05:13Austin 10 is a classic mid-range saloon aimed squarely at the middle-class market so this was
05:20like I suppose probably your sort of bankish manager or at least well-to-do merchant I was
05:27going to say architect yeah possibly yeah grosser grosser yeah yeah yeah so grosser maybe with two
05:35shops the interior looks pretty okay well actually the seat cushions have been re-upholstered by it's
05:41because there's been an awful lot of grossers bottoms on there well that's right oh my what's
05:45that now that is extraordinary now what is this then fuzzy it's not it's one of those yeah it's a
05:52standard 14 but hang on a sec but wait a minute what but it's done as America Russell look what
06:01just talk to me what's this about standard 14 made to look military so it wasn't originally it wasn't
06:09military no but the one outside you were looking at was former RAF okay and better condition so sort
06:16of took that theme across I see oh right okay I'll get it I actually think it looks pretty cool it does
06:22look cool you know it looks like a kind of staff car do you know what I mean yeah and it's got well
06:28you know it's it's aged but it has got a complete interior by the looks of things yeah okay does it
06:34run at all it does start it's not the best it needs you know your expertise oh don't look at me
06:41mate it needs his expertise oh let's just have a little look under there what's under there this
06:46is a flathead this is this is a side valve engine so it's so you're nice and slowly then yeah very
06:53slowly but it'll it'll get there when it is going it ain't slow okay it isn't slow so once you wind it
07:00up it it'll do 70 miles an hour quite comfortably no will it yeah yeah it does look lovely though I
07:06like it it's got a certain chance it's funky I mean it's I mean where are you going to find another
07:10one outside yeah that's a good point well delivered yeah now look there's something behind here that I
07:16want to have a look at go on then right okay now what the heck is that that is a 1954 Nash roller tractor
07:25that's it that's a tipper does it is it a power tipper no you just a manual tip oh okay yeah
07:29motorcycle seat BSA stationary engine and a free speeds forward and reverse it's actually got a
07:36roller on it as well it's for rolling the garden now look at that I've driven up the road oh yeah yeah
07:41yeah it does 25 miles now 25 miles per hour it really rattles along I'll tell you it's becoming more
07:47and more attractive by stopping it again is a yeah that is an issue yeah let's go hang on what's that
07:53that's a little Chinese Charles bike oh cool sweet little thing yeah one two five semi-automatic
08:01that's super cool that could be really good fun yeah thing yeah well look this is a good fun
08:08corner here all right should we get a look over there then Russell's second unit that's got a lovely
08:14Triumph Saloon and uh oh no no no look it's a Dennis you like these don't you look at that look it's got
08:25it's got the starting handle and everything come back now that is lovely I've got a hankering for
08:32I've got a hankering for a Dennis you know I have to say that is exactly the same as the one that I got
08:38nailed is it is it really 300 quid yeah from Dennis mower like that and I sold it for 70 did you yeah
08:48okay so look right we've got that um standard 14 oh yeah military military spec one yeah we've got
08:57the one next door to it which is an Austin 14 Austin 10 10 yeah I really like that but you know I just do
09:04like Austin's there's that motorbike oh yes of course yeah okay and there's also the tipper the
09:09little tipper now that that is that's a lot in quite a compact area come on let's go do a deal
09:17mind the step yeah all right I don't know where to start rush where should we start loads of stuff
09:27you know in a very small space as well it's great compact yeah compact but lovely yeah okay mate
09:34so go on then what right I'm going to start off by asking about the Austin 10 there okay so is it
09:41for so yes yeah how much are you looking for for that five and a half five and a half okay all right
09:47well I'll chip in then okay mmm yeah what my very rare tractor how much is that grand yeah okay next to
09:56it is a the trials bike the trials bike how much is that 650 okie-kokee now standing in front of us is
10:06this standard 14 3 2 3 2 does this run and ride it starts it wants tinkering with does it stop I drove it
10:17in here oh right okay from from where just outside yeah did you use the brakes to stop it yes I did
10:23yeah okay and they did stop yeah yeah yeah okay okay that's good all right good now I'm just wondering
10:28what to perhaps pair and wheel and deal with do you know what I mean what do you think I think it's
10:34gotta be what the little tractor truck tipper truck yeah not for a grand no nothing else you want to
10:41chuck in with it okay let me have a think three two so that would be four two and with the motorbike four
10:51four eight four two the lot four four four three now that is extraordinary we're down in Bristol with
11:17Russell and it's jam-packed shed full of curiosities we've offered four thousand two hundred for a
11:23standard car a tipper and a scrambler bike but he wants more four four um four three
11:34no four four four bargain well done go on then Russ okay cheers four thousand four hundred of your
11:50finest British pounds we'll be winking your way great hey mate what a great day
11:54next day back at the shed we reveal all
12:00we have ourselves man okay it's a standard right motor but apart from that it's been turned into a
12:11military staff car kind of American tip doesn't it with knobbly rear tires yeah well we thought we
12:17might off-road it yeah I think it looks great and apparently it's got a good turn of speed it'll do
12:2365 70 miles per hour yeah it is something in something that old you have to concentrate on
12:30the steering yeah very much so look right I think we should just accessorize that I'm not quite sure
12:34quite how but I've got a feeling there could be a couple of American stars on the doors do you know
12:40what I mean right okay it does apparently have a running problem as well might be a little bit of
12:44a carburettor clean coming up and potentially it might have a little bit of a weep in the cylinder head
12:50but that's an easy job can we just clear this up a slight running here does it run yes oh okay
12:57don't know yes it runs never tried it it runs but it bubbles it might do I think it's rather a lovely
13:05thing that we're going to get going we're going to accessorize and then we could we've invaded
13:10Oxfordshire a few times perhaps we should go to Wiltshire this time and surprise them yeah yeah
13:17deliver a general to Wiltshire Tidworth oh we could deliver a general yeah staff car
13:22as for the scrambler and the roller tipper if we have time we'll give them a bit of a fettle but the main
13:32job is a standard 14 with its US military paint job there we go four cylinders of standard fineness
13:43there shall I get in and have a look I mean beans in there but I'm sure she'll move just crank it and
13:48see what happens see what happens you have to pull okay I'm going to get in this one watch out
13:52green yes
14:01it's running but it's not happy so our nice little runner is not quite sprinting number four cylinder
14:10isn't firing the number three the leads can just disconnected from the cap so that's an easy fix
14:15right okay so three's an easy fix four less so do you think we should take it for a spin and see
14:20if four chimes in I think we should change the spark plug on number four first yeah I agree with you Al
14:25overruled typical fuzz removes the spark plug and it looks like we were right to wait
14:33there we are okay our first remedy is to burn off the old fuel and crud
14:41but when fuzz tries again
14:46what's happening
14:49the end cylinder when I take the cap off quite a way yeah it fires on that cylinder right okay I think
14:55we should change that plug that's better yeah that's exactly the right one is it yeah well I hope it's
15:00all right because I bought that at a jumble ready ready third time lucky
15:05yeah that's it
15:07sounds good no that's much better it's not bouncing around like it was that sounds fantastic yeah I think
15:16we might have a little bit of a carburettor problem yeah maybe there's an air screw here we can maybe can I
15:21just make a suggestion yes why don't we just pile in and take it down and drive them back good idea see if it
15:25works so what is it not was fiddling with the air screw before we go quickly very quickly I can get
15:31screwed either all right mate overruled again Alan's 30 second adjustment turns into 30 minutes as he
15:41discovers a new problem a worn gasket it's leaking here first we turned off it squirted fuel out of
15:46this joint here all right okay the solution is for fuzz to make a new one I'm using the hammer in the
15:54ring end of this spanner just to cut the hole in this homemade gasket after Alan has filed down the
16:06flange connecting the carb to the air intake to make sure that it's flat they re-plumb the carb and try
16:13again okay ignition on client pulling the starter now bit of choke it runs but it sounds even worse we
16:31could do with setting it bogs down a little bit doesn't it hold on now I've got an idea I've got an
16:43idea as well what's that we just take it for a drive let's take it for a drive just see what happens
16:47yeah so it may suddenly free up a bit unusually got a lovely tick over it's a beautiful tick over see if it
16:55drives let's go have a drive are you going to drive I don't mind well I'm closest I can drive I'll go in
17:00the back all right come on then being oh hang on there's a cylinder head on my seat oh dear so
17:06finally we're in the car but getting it going doesn't quite cure the problem something's trying
17:12to chime in I still think we should take all the spark plugs out first yeah I think we should take all the
17:19spark plugs out also look at the points do you know what I know there's some fettling to be done
17:29quite substantial yeah oh so you pulled your knob off I'm just trying to get it in reverse there
17:39reverse madam yeah that's it that's it that's it if you pull on the pull on the crook rather than
17:47the rather than the knob it'll it'll avoid that once this is sorted I'm planning a military themed
17:56outing but we've got our work cut out there's a lot to do isn't there to make it run beautiful yes
18:03but for the first little test run I think that's the right result
18:07back at the shed Alan and skid move on to the scrambler I'm quite looking forward to this Al yeah
18:19me too it looks virtually new doesn't it just dusty yeah I mean it is a far eastern kind of
18:25knock-off cheap motorbike but I tell you what when it runs it's probably great fun so should we just do
18:32the usual just see if it runs I mean it's fairly new I think I think it's gonna be pilot jet blocks
18:37it's always the pilot yeah yeah well especially with modern fuel got good ignition system on these
18:41you always have a good spark and let's see it's got some fuel in it yeah see if it starts yeah and
18:46then see what happens from there Alan checks the fuel and then gives it a first kick it's got good
18:54compression the engine sounds good yeah it's not rightly is it no smoke these things don't get you
19:07that's trying isn't it yeah let's just warm it up warm it up
19:19no it's definitely got some block jets so like the standard the scrambler has carb trouble
19:29while skid does some cleaning Alan dismounts the car and gives it some tough love
19:36that's nice and clean in there that's a good sign so there's the pilot jet there's the main jet and
19:42that's the idle adjusting screw so we'll take the jets out and see if they're clear
19:45yeah the pilot jet's completely blocked can't see any light through it at all so I've got a
19:52wire brush bristle hopefully I can make that and go through the jet it's very reluctant to go in
19:57the problem these days is the fuel is the it's the ethanol in the fuel attacks the jets it causes
20:03the fuel to block up and make a big mess you can just see it in the float channel it's started to
20:08happen here looks got that green tinge on here it's just started to take effect but because this
20:14hole is so small it blocks up very quickly and it stops the engine from running so I managed to
20:18find a really small wire brush with very fine bristles and that now goes through and goes through
20:24nicely Alan refits the carb and goes again carbs done carbs cleaned out tank drains fresh fuel
20:32let's give it a go choke on
20:44let it warm up a bit yeah yeah that's much better isn't it finally he gives the gears a quick check
20:52that's perfect that runs really well it's good I think we've got to take it out out I can get a
20:58crash on it all right then and away he goes
21:02it might be a cheap as chips Chinese import that will soon be thrashed and crashed by someone with
21:14more spots than sense but if it allows Alan to rediscover his inner teenager I'm all for it
21:20so a great end to the day but the scramblers just one of our three purchases tomorrow we've got to take
21:31on the tipper but the big task is to get the standard ready for its military theme day will it cut the
21:38mustard or will it sink into the Oxfordshire mutt the knobs come off where's the knob
21:47we had an interesting day yesterday with our standard we got it running but it's not very happy today we're
22:06going to have another try but first our other purchase the three-wheeled dumper truck with a
22:12BSA engine I'll tell you what we should try and do is if we get it going I bet you we can get three
22:18of us on it oh easily yeah oh easily don't you think perhaps even the odd dog yeah we just take
22:24it down the road and back yeah I think we should put some fuel in it and just see if it goes okay
22:27let's do that I'll put a little totty we're not bothering with the spark plug scenario or anything
22:31like that we're just going to see if we get lucky just got this feeling it's just going to work
22:35fighting torque hiya so let's see four stroke isn't it yes it's a four stroke okay choke on
22:43bit of throttle bit of throttle bit of crankage come on then cranker
22:47dead as a doornail first attempt not so good so Alan checks for a spark
22:59massive spark right before you put that back in yeah let's go keep all right yeah get some start me
23:05up round two oh that was a fire yeah yeah oh it's definitely something just fire
23:19what we need to do is go down to the workshop just file this square see that's at an angle
23:30oh right okay should be dead square like that all right do you want to try it with the um which
23:34way is it turning try the rope I can follow that our tipper roller BSA oddity has dual start first
23:42attempt that kicks back it can suck him down like a big sucker close was it second time with feeling
23:53and a slug of easy start ready yeah like all those BSA motorbikes it needs a bit of patience in the end it
24:08gets there I have no idea how any of these controls work honest well we didn't get that far mainly
24:32because I put it into third and I didn't have enough revs I don't think I think we need to
24:37adjust the air screw do you think I think it's just I think it is pilot error it's going remarkably
24:50well getting it going again it's not so easy but eventually we're away
25:02we're in third in 1950 our Nash super tipper tractor retailed at 186 quid and was advertised
25:13as suitable for both the farm and the garden 75 years later it's still running but only just
25:21shall we disembark yeah certainly felt really powerful yeah great fun though
25:25thank god we brought the starter cord ready yeah
25:30or maybe not
25:39you've heard of a bull in a china shop but what about a tractor
25:51can I just say if I'm correct I was terrified because the cutout switch I don't think works and I
26:05thought this will blunder its way through anything yeah well yeah you've got to actually stall it on
26:10the throttle that electronical stop I don't think works you could have shoved the choke down
26:14Al I was panicking I wanted to stop there
26:19once we realised you were safe it was really funny yeah it's quite heavy steering isn't it H I know it is honey
26:26the steering is heavy yeah you won't get many over 60s driving this no you won't I'm knackered
26:31so absolutely trashed I'm gonna have to sit down come on let's go and sit down on the bench oh dear
26:40look boys I think look we got it going it runs right we just you know at some point give it a wash before sale
26:47but basically man
26:49that is something that someone is going to love who's into those kind of industrial kind of things you know
26:54they've just got tinker with a carburettor yeah okay well we can tinker with that and we can clean it but
26:58basically lads we have a three-wheel tipper slash dumper yeah slash roller yeah which is a runner
27:06and it certainly makes you laugh and it makes you laugh yes exactly it's fun yeah nearly kills us
27:12so with the tipper sorted next day we're back on the standard Alan thinks we've got an ignition problem
27:23so he starts with the distributor so what we're going to do is take the distributor off and strip it down
27:28so I can make that work right okay basically I need to loosen off these two bolts and this should just lift out the engine
27:33out it comes and immediately Alan notices something
27:37Skid come and look at this this may or may not be a contributory issue to our problem
27:41yeah look at that bolt it's touching the distributor case
27:44I was going to short it out is that the live feed?
27:46that's the live feed and this is actually loose look you can move it your finger see that slide it along
27:50oh yeah what do you need to do bend that down
27:53yeah we'll do that take it off bend that down make it tighter
27:55tap it yeah yeah it may have been a definitely a contributory cause if not
27:58well with vibration it might be just occasionally arky
28:01let's get this top plate off and we can see what we've got to work with
28:03yeah yeah modern cars have computer controlled ignition
28:07but engines from this era were run by electromechanical distributors like this
28:12they were full of small moving parts that were easily disturbed
28:16that hair there's a blonde hair there I'm not sure where that came from
28:19but I can tell you what that's definitely not Henry's
28:21Henry would not have been delving in here and also that's not highlighted
28:24very good point
28:25yeah so let's throw it away mate
28:29five minutes later it's reassembled
28:32do you think you sort of the problem?
28:33I think it will I think all these things add up
28:36you know a little bit here a little bit there hopefully Al
28:39I mean you never know
28:40back in it goes and we try again
28:43okay here we go hang on
28:46come on then
28:47hey bloody hell
28:49hey by the way
28:50the veterinary
28:52says that she's a little overweight
28:54yes
28:55about how many biscuits?
28:56probably a couple of packs
28:59right okay here we go
29:08it's advanced isn't it
29:09you've broken it Al
29:18you've broken it Al
29:20hey what was that?
29:22so there you go
29:23even our resident genius doesn't always get it right
29:26what we should have done was took a picture of the setup before we took it apart
29:30we were certainly too excited to get on with the repair that we didn't take a picture
29:34the only solution is to dig out the hand crank and realign the pistons
29:39there you go you're on
29:40gonna get your piston number one
29:41top dead
29:42top dead centre on compression stroke
29:43right
29:44and I can see where the rotor arm is pointing to and align the distributor cap in the correct place
29:48can I suggest we're a little bit out
29:50turn it over now till you hear a hiss from my finger
29:53keep going one
29:54keep going
29:55two turns later
29:56stop there stop there
29:58Alan seems confident
30:03but the engine won't play ball
30:05it's on two cylinders
30:07okay
30:08the back two cylinders aren't piling it towards
30:09yes we have four aren't running
30:10pulled the caps off made no difference to the engine at all
30:12okay well
30:13but at least we've got two running
30:15the same engine was later used in the Mark 4 Jag
30:19so it was well thought of
30:20but there's a lot more cleaning and adjusting
30:23before it's running on all four cylinders
30:25and ticking over properly
30:27that is lovely
30:28turn it off
30:29and see if it starts on its own with no throttle or anything
30:32here comes the acid test
30:36oh look at that
30:37that is lovely
30:39sounds amazing doesn't it
30:40yeah
30:41Alan
30:42Guy
30:43you are a pair of geniuses
30:45I've just been an assistant
30:47proper team effort this morning
30:48mate
30:49it's absolutely fantastic
30:50and obviously it just
30:51things really came together when I arrived
30:53yeah once the blonde highlights out the distributor
30:56it seems to be fine
30:57I think that's what was jamming it Al
30:58I think it's a long way from a cast like it's everyone
31:01quiet
31:02tea
31:03come on
31:07suitably refreshed
31:08me and Skid move on to the final stage of the Resto
31:11enhancing the military theme
31:13with some extra US Army stars
31:16it's all in the prep innit
31:19but I think these couple of US Army stars
31:24will just er
31:25you know
31:26just finish it off
31:29you know
31:30right there we go
31:32here
31:33skid carefully marks up the position for the stencil
31:37but there's a problem
31:39I can't find any low tack contact adhesive so I thought
31:44spray mount is what we were looking for
31:45so
31:46we're using what every child has
31:48yeah great
31:49we're going to use this
31:50get wiping
31:51just do the bit
31:52it's the bits that
31:53are going to be a nightmare
31:54are the corners and the lines of the stars
31:56etc
31:57well you need it stuck down
31:58because otherwise
31:59er the paint gets under it
32:01it's going to bleed isn't it
32:02I don't know this is going to work
32:04I think it will
32:05I don't think there's going to be a problem
32:06I think it's going to go rather well
32:08what could possibly go wrong?
32:10not a lot
32:11the five pointed star
32:12has been used by the US Army
32:14since 1942
32:16when it was introduced
32:17to identify their gear
32:19I mean if this was in World War 2
32:22yeah?
32:23yeah
32:24we'd be doing this under fire
32:25I'm sure of it
32:26no they did this before the D-Day landings
32:28oh do they?
32:29yes so that the planes could see who was theirs
32:31oh right
32:32when they got in the forests and things
32:34right
32:35aerosol paint
32:36didn't become widely available until the mid 1950s
32:39but for something like this it's a godsend
32:42not that skid always approves
32:44right leave that now
32:45let's do the other side
32:46no I'll do the US Army
32:47just leave it
32:49you're going to make it run
32:50I'm leaving it
32:51I'm not making it worse
32:52oh hang on
32:53leave it alone
32:58just leave it please
32:59you'll come back in a minute
33:00I know you're looking at me
33:01that needs more
33:02just leave it a minute
33:03alright
33:04patience
33:07we repeat the process on the other side
33:09by which time the first side is dry
33:12and ready for a big reveal
33:17that's not gone well
33:20that is absolutely terrible
33:27we should have got spray mount
33:29you couldn't have done it worse
33:31even if you half close your eyes it's rubbish
33:34so Alan's not the only genius
33:36who occasionally makes a bad move
33:38can I draw your attention away from the square
33:46I don't think we've ever got something so wrong
33:49no that is proper wrong
33:51what are we going to do?
33:53let it dry and try and teacup those bits out
33:55we won't teacup them out
33:57I might have a go
33:58because it's thicker on the letters
34:00it's not good
34:02it doesn't bode well
34:03I warned you
34:08tomorrow we're going to take the standard
34:10on a multi-surface military road trip
34:13to see how it runs
34:14with a bit of luck
34:15it'll get dirty enough to hide the stars
34:18but after all our engine problems
34:20will our standard go the distance?
34:22oh you're bouncing!
34:36three weeks ago in a shed near Bristol
34:39now that is extraordinary
34:41it's a standard 14
34:43we found a 1950s British saloon car
34:46in US military trim
34:49we tested it
34:50repaired it
34:51it bogs down a little bit
34:53doesn't it?
34:54and enhanced it
34:55in a manner of speaking
34:57that is absolutely terrible
35:00now after a little bit of tidying up of our efforts
35:03it's ready for a proper test drive
35:05come road trip
35:07have I got a lovely day for us lined up
35:10alright
35:11ok so now look
35:12I'll take you through it bit by bit
35:14we have before us a faux military vehicle
35:18now it also has off road tyres at the back
35:21that's good for gripping the motor
35:23yeah
35:24so the big question in my mind is
35:27is there any point in them?
35:29only if you go off road
35:30yeah
35:31exactly
35:32then once we've had our fill of that
35:34I thought we might take it on a little road adventure
35:37just to try it out
35:38where? I hear you ask
35:40where?
35:41what we're going to do
35:42is we
35:43are going to
35:44one of my favourite museums
35:46oh
35:47yeah
35:48which is obviously
35:49a military museum
35:50yes
35:51that involves our helicopters and airplanes
35:52of course it will do
35:53yeah
35:54it might do yeah
35:55yeah
35:56anyway we're going to middle wallop
35:57oh good
35:58ah
35:59we're going to go to the army air museum
36:01oh that's very cool
36:02ok but on the way
36:03I thought we might just have a little stop off for Scorch
36:08ok
36:09excellent
36:10well let's hope it makes it Fuzz
36:11if not I'm blaming you to
36:12it's going to be fine
36:14I've got a feeling that this is going to be one of those great trouble free journeys
36:21so off we go
36:22it's a shame that Guy's not here to enjoy the fun
36:25but we're going to
36:27I can't believe Guy's ill
36:29I know I'm a bit worried about him
36:31he's never sick
36:32he's never ill
36:33our off road test track
36:35is my mate Nigel's farm
36:37are those knobbly rear tyres for show
36:40or for go
36:41only one way to find out
36:43foot down
36:44and into second
36:51where's the knob
36:52you've lost your knob
36:53the knob's come off
36:54just go knobblish
36:55it'll be alright
36:56yeah
36:57oh
36:58little roll about somewhere
37:01ok we'll find the knob in a minute
37:04here we go
37:08I think that's really fast
37:09do you know what
37:10it feels really fast
37:11that is pretty quick isn't it
37:14in the 1950s
37:15standards were occasionally used for rallying
37:18and judging from the way this one handles
37:20it should have happened more often
37:22put it round there sir
37:24come on
37:25here we go
37:26here we go
37:32right Tiff you can stay on the strip down the middle
37:34back spring seats are working really well
37:36really good?
37:37yeah really good the back
37:38I'm trying to stay on the strip
37:39watch it bouncing
37:40uh
37:41you know I think this is uh
37:42i think this has potential
37:44it has
37:46to be a classic rally car
37:50it does
37:51or a bit of a trialler anyway
37:53maybe slap some bigger springs on so it's a bit taller
37:57you'd think you had a forward escort wouldn't you
37:58Yeah.
38:03This is such fun.
38:05This is great, actually.
38:06I love it.
38:07So far, it's passing the test with flying colours.
38:10It's not even overheating.
38:11Let's go.
38:12I'm going to see a full throttle launch.
38:15Go right on the apex of the bend.
38:17Coming up to the bend.
38:18Don't bend.
38:19I want a break because...
38:21I have to admit, I had no idea the standard would drive so well.
38:26But who's complaining?
38:29Back on the blacktop before we head for the museum in Middlewallop.
38:33Time for a tea break.
38:35I'm not worried about this getting to Middlewallop at all.
38:38No.
38:39Yeah?
38:40We've even got a working fuel gauge.
38:41Yeah.
38:42We've got a working everything gauge, man.
38:43And we can tell that it's a working fuel gauge because it's just above zero.
38:49Yeah, don't start, all right?
38:51Just because I...
38:52Look, we've got to sell it after we've been.
38:54That's true.
38:55You don't want to sell it with a surfeet of fuel.
38:57Exactly.
38:58Here we go.
38:59Look.
39:00Oh.
39:01Fun parts.
39:02Yeah, come on.
39:03Quick cup of tea, then we'll get on.
39:04Yeah.
39:09Now look, right, I think we need a bit of clankage.
39:12Only because this car has excelled.
39:15Yeah, it's brilliant.
39:16It really is.
39:17Totally shocking.
39:18Amazingly performance.
39:19Do you know what?
39:20It is really shocking.
39:21No rattles, no bangs, no squeaks.
39:22No.
39:23Nothing.
39:24And I tell you what, there's no spluttering on the throttle.
39:25No.
39:26No.
39:27It's 35 miles an hour.
39:28I have no doubt that it's going to be an accomplished car on the open road.
39:34I think so.
39:35Cheers.
39:36Right, drink up.
39:37Time's money.
39:38Make some cake at the Army Museum.
39:39Well, that would be good.
39:40It's another 40 miles to Middle Wallop.
39:45So a good test for our car.
39:48Never beaten 4th gear off road because I was hammering it in 3rd.
39:53No.
39:54And that's travelling along nice.
39:55Look at that.
39:56It is, yeah.
39:57From the late 30s onwards, Standard began to call these Flying 14s because of their aerodynamic
40:04styling.
40:05So the Army Flying Museum seems like a good end point for our road trip.
40:10Come on then mate, we'll just have a quick little homage.
40:12Yes.
40:13We need an education, don't we?
40:14Seeing as the Standard's got us here.
40:15Yeah.
40:16As curator Susan explains, the museum tells the story of the Army Flying Corps and the
40:23various aircraft they've used.
40:25During World War II, Army gliders played a vital role in the D-Day landings.
40:30Can you imagine right now?
40:32No.
40:33I'd go, alright Al, Fuzz, what we're going to do is we're going to get into this glider,
40:37right?
40:38You're going to be towed across the channel, right?
40:40And then we're going to release the wire and you're going to crash into a field.
40:45There are helicopters of all sizes and shapes and some real oddities like this Jeep fitted
40:51with chopper blades.
40:53Sorry, so hang on a second.
40:55So they were looking about how to get behind enemy lines in World War II.
40:59Yeah.
41:00Some really clever soul thought a Willis Jeep might actually be able to be controlled using
41:06a rotor blade.
41:07Yeah, I mean it's sort of like an almost an autogyro system.
41:10Oh, okay, alright.
41:11Yeah.
41:12So they were dropped out, were they?
41:13Floats down.
41:14And floated down.
41:15Like a sycamore seed.
41:16Oh right, I see.
41:17Can you imagine with the Willis Jeep?
41:18Look, we're just going to float you down on the rotors like an auto rotate.
41:21I'd just say, please don't.
41:23I'd just go, look, I'll drive there, it's fine.
41:27Whether anyone ever tried attaching chopper blades to a standard 14 like ours, who knows?
41:33But either way, it flies.
41:35Have you enjoyed a little brief whiz round?
41:38It's been worth the drive.
41:40That's right.
41:41I mean, we'd like to present you with our very own exhibit for you to keep at the museum for the rest of time.
41:49No, she won't want it.
41:50Oh, me?
41:51Oh, right.
41:52I thought you meant the standard car.
41:53No, no.
41:54She wouldn't want that.
41:55That would be great.
41:56Oh, well, I'm here.
41:57I'm available.
41:58Yeah.
41:59I could just sort of live in the Huey.
42:00That's right.
42:01I just need a kettle.
42:02Yeah.
42:03That's it, really.
42:04Just pop out and tell tales.
42:05Absolutely.
42:06Actually, talking about people who like tea, we'd better find out from Chopper Roy whether that car's worth anything.
42:10Go on then.
42:11All right, Susan.
42:12Thank you so very much.
42:13Thank you very much for coming.
42:14All right.
42:15It's an absolute pleasure.
42:17I'll be back very shortly.
42:22Next day, back at base, we find out.
42:25Can I just apologise for our stenciling?
42:28Oh, you're guilty, eh?
42:29By taking it off road, we've managed to kind of sort of subdue, you know, the problem.
42:34Yeah.
42:35I think it's kind of blended it well.
42:36Extra patina.
42:37Yeah.
42:38Now, I've got to tell you, mate, okay, this thing absolutely flies.
42:43That's it?
42:44It's an acquired taste.
42:45Let's just face the music on it.
42:48Yeah.
42:49What do you reckon?
42:50It's going to be niche, but you only want two people that want it.
42:53And you're there, aren't you?
42:54Yeah.
42:55So it's going to...
42:56Mid to high threes.
42:57High threes.
42:58Mid would be a bit mean, but high threes, definitely.
43:01Okay.
43:02Okay, hang on.
43:03Well, let's call that four.
43:06We paid Russell 4.4 for the car, plus the tipper and the scrambler.
43:11So not a bad price.
43:13I reckon the dump truck and the bike is a grand.
43:17Yeah.
43:18Yeah.
43:19Well, there you go then.
43:20All right.
43:21So, what have we done?
43:22Made a monkey, haven't we?
43:23Yeah, that's right.
43:24Well...
43:25Approximately.
43:26I think so.
43:27Depending on, obviously, whether we're getting late threes or early fours.
43:30Well, that's true, but you're a prospective monkey.
43:33All right, mate.
43:34So there's a potential 500 in it.
43:35Yeah, it's a proper crowd puller.
43:36Yeah.
43:37Oh, it's a crowd puller, mate.
43:38It would, though, wouldn't it?
43:39Rather like you, Roy.
43:40Yeah.
43:41Not the crowd, anyway.
43:42It's lovely to see Roy again.
43:43Isn't it just nice?
43:44Peace.
43:45Ha ha.
43:46Ha ha ha.
43:48Ha ha.
43:57Ha ha ha.
44:02Ha ha ha.
44:03Ha ha ha.
