00:00Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid, breaking news from the National Football League.
00:05As Jacob Kameker and I were just discussing, the league usually, you know, has their Monday press conferences
00:12and then Tuesdays usually when they make any changes in the NFL.
00:16But look, the Giants are, you know, basically in a spot where they're getting ahead of it.
00:19What am I talking about here? I'll get to the point.
00:22ESPN is reporting that Brian Dable has been fired as head coach of the Giants.
00:27Donnie right side. What timing for Donnie to be here with us to break it all down?
00:31I thought he thought we were just going to do his Eagles tonight on Monday Night Football, but we get to the Giants first.
00:36Donnie, this is the least surprising thing to happen here on a Monday.
00:41They blew the game against the Broncos. They absolutely blew the game yesterday.
00:46And that's what's going to get you fired in the National Football League when you're already on thin ice.
00:49Look, if the Giants would have just split those two games, I think that he would be OK.
00:53And I also think that he had no future there. By the way, he's going to be fine.
00:57He'll be an offensive coordinator for some team in the NFL next season.
01:00But time is clearly up when you have your defense blowing games like that.
01:04Loved him as a Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator.
01:07When the Giants hired him, I thought that was a very sound move.
01:09But it was quick right away after that first year that he wasn't going to cut it anymore.
01:14And what gets you fired in the NFL these days?
01:16Certainly bad records, embarrassing the franchise. I get that.
01:18But when you finally think you have your franchise quarterback and you are not protecting him,
01:22and he's been checked for concussions four times in the season, he's saying this season is lost.
01:26But yet I'm continuing to call play after play after play, which has my superstar quarterback
01:31running around like a tailback in the middle of the field getting blasted.
01:35Yesterday, that concussion sends him out. And you're right about this.
01:38Competency still allows you to win that football game.
01:40You had the lead. You should have won.
01:41It's no surprise that when you continuously blow double-digit leads in the NFL,
01:45it's because of you, not the players, after a while.
01:48No surprise he got fired today for me, Craig.
01:51Yeah, you know what? It's funny that you bring that up.
01:53I didn't really consider that. Do you think that, like, if I gave you a pie chart of 100%,
01:57would you say that the loss is 90% and then the end?
02:03You're right about Dart. He has him running up the middle constantly.
02:05I'm surprised that he hasn't been hurt to this point.
02:07Do you think that that is a bigger factor in that?
02:09Or do you think, strictly speaking, that if Dart has a concussion yesterday but the Giants win,
02:16Dable still has a job today? Probably, right?
02:18Yeah, I think the bigger deal is him actually blowing those leads.
02:21Because as a coach, we have double-digit leads.
02:23The chances of you winning that football game, I mean, worst-case scenario with 75-25 or 50-50,
02:28not losing just about every game you have a lead in, that's going to get you fired.
02:32But also, when you start to weigh, hey, we're not getting the best coaching philosophy out here,
02:35and B, what are you doing with my quarterback?
02:37And if I think I have a franchise guy, he's not going to make it past year or two
02:40because he had his fourth concussion already?
02:42Those things all weigh into it.
02:44Because I would say yesterday, if they won that football game and Dart didn't get hurt,
02:47he's not getting fired today.
02:49But that's a double combination.
02:50Embarrassing loss and your starting quarterback went down who's young and you're trying to protect,
02:54you're out the door quicker than that.
02:56Yeah.
02:57And look, he'll be in, you know, Houston will probably need a new offensive coordinator next year.
03:01He'll be there or, you know, finds the Jets, some team.
03:04You know, he'll be perfectly fine for his future.
03:06Welcome back to Newswire here on SportsGrid.
03:09Great to have Adam Kaplan, our SportsGrid insider, talking about our big story of the day,
03:14which comes from the National Football League, as Brian Dable has been fired by the Giants
03:18after a few lackluster seasons and specifically a couple of very lackluster losses over the last
03:24couple of weeks, two out of the last three weeks, to be specific.
03:27You know, Adam, I think Dable probably wasn't going to come back anyway next season.
03:31But this is when anything like this happens, you know, from covering the league, I know
03:36from covering sports, too.
03:37It comes from the owner, right?
03:38Like this is the spot where the owner steps in and says, hey, you know, we can't have this
03:43kind of stuff happening.
03:45Where do the Giants go from here?
03:47It seems to me that they feel like they have their quarterback in tow.
03:51They'll get their wide receiver back next season.
03:53Their front four is pretty good, too.
03:55So it's not one of these jobs where I guess like New Orleans, where you know that you're in
03:59for another long year.
04:00The Jets, where you're in for another long year.
04:02The Giants conceivably have a few pieces in place, right?
04:05They do.
04:05Malik Nabors will come back from his ACL injury next year.
04:08So they'll get him back.
04:09He's a stud talent.
04:11No, Scadabo, unfortunately, as we know, have that bad injury.
04:14He'll be back next year.
04:16Look, there are some pieces, as you said.
04:18Now, here's why it's going to be an attractive job.
04:20It's the quarterback.
04:22Jackson Dart is well-respected around the league.
04:25He's gotten off to a pretty good start.
04:26Look, he's had some starts where he could play better, but he is a rookie quarterback.
04:30He's well ahead of schedule.
04:31He's shown enough to show that he could play in this league.
04:35So, Craig, when you look at the offensive coordinator types, like Joe Brady of the Bills,
04:40he's done a really good job after getting fired by the Panthers in season, unfortunately,
04:43three years ago.
04:45But he's doing a great job.
04:47You look at Matt Nagy, the Chiefs offensive coordinator.
04:51Andy Reid calls the plays.
04:52Nagy did make the playoffs as a head coach for the Bears.
04:55He got Mitch Trubisky in the playoffs.
04:58He's coached quarterbacks.
04:59Andy Reid told me once that Matt Nagy, of all the guys who work for him, would be the best head coach in terms of candidates that he had had.
05:06So, Nagy deserves probably another shot.
05:09But bottom line is, they'll look to continue to develop the quarterback.
05:12But one thing I do want to say about Dayball, remember, Craig, when they made the playoffs in 2022?
05:17Remember talking to someone with the Giants?
05:18They were not thinking they'd be in the playoffs that year.
05:21It was kind of a turnaround year.
05:22Figured things out with Daniel Jones.
05:24He had a change of coaching staff.
05:26And they stunned everybody and made the playoffs.
05:28Won a playoff game at Minnesota, by the way.
05:30Won the game pretty handily.
05:32Then it's been downhill ever since.
05:33It's no winning record since then.
05:35And it just was a disaster.
05:37And, Craig, the other part I would add to this is teams always know.
05:41Like, you could say, oh, they could have done this at the end of the season.
05:46Why wait when you know you're going to fire the head coach?
05:48Like, they knew this.
05:49This is something they just woke up in the morning.
05:52John Mara and the Mara family and the Tisch family said, you know what, let's fire him now.
05:58This has been on their mind to do this, and they did it now.
06:01So, and Mike Kapka, the OC, who, by the way, got the play calling back this year.
06:06Abel took it away from him.
06:07He gave it back to him this year.
06:09He's supposedly going to be the interim head coach.
06:13And, you know, Mike, talking to people, know him.
06:15He wants to be head coach.
06:16I know it's tough.
06:18You know, I'm in league neighbors.
06:19Darts got the concussion.
06:21It's going to be hard for them to be competitive.
06:23But this is an audition for Mike Kapka, and good luck to him.
06:27Yeah, definitely so.
06:28And Joe Shane, I would assume, who's the general manager right now, Adam, he was the one who
06:34hired, of course, Dable, and also, you know, traded St. Juan Barkley famously, too.
06:39And, you know, unfortunately, a lot of that stuff for him showed up on video, which has
06:42kind of destroyed the idea of hard knocks at this point.
06:45It's why nobody wants to do it because of that.
06:47I would, I mean, I don't know.
06:48I mean, Greer got fired less than 10 days ago.
06:51The Giants could just hang on until the end of the year.
06:54But I guess what?
06:54The next month or so, they'll probably just let everybody know he won't be back, too.
06:59Well, here, okay, so let's go back to the Jets last year, a team that plays in the same
07:02stadium.
07:04So, they fired Robert Sala first.
07:06And then later, before the end, they fired Joe Douglas, the general manager who's now in
07:09Philly, as one of Howie Roseman's assistants in the personnel department.
07:13So, sometimes you fire them both at the same time.
07:16Sometimes you separate them.
07:17But Joe Shane's the architect of this team.
07:20Now, by the way, the ownership hired the general manager and the head coach.
07:26It's just because Shane and David worked together with the Bills, they were able to come in together
07:31more or less the same.
07:33But it just didn't end well.
07:35And look, remember with Saquon Barkley, he wasn't traded.
07:38He actually signed as a free agent.
07:39Right, right.
07:40And they decided, Craig, like they were not going to pay big bucks.
07:45You never know.
07:45When you go to the NFL's best offensive line, obviously, he's going to be better than he
07:48sets a record for one season for the Super Bowl.
07:51By the way, Jonathan Taylor might be pushing at this point.
07:53We'll see what happens.
07:54But, yeah, look, it's been a nightmare for the Tisch family and the Mara family for many
07:58years now.
07:59They were once really the epitome of what the NFL should look like in terms of success.
08:03But they've been downtrodden for so many years, ever since Tom Coughlin's been fired,
08:08and they've been on the downward slide.
08:10Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that, because I was going to ask you, who was the last coach
08:13of the Giants to have success?
08:16Because after Coughlin, Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo, Pat Shermer, Joe Judge, Brian Dable,
08:23zero success.
08:24The only one on that list that I would say that has a prominent role right now in the
08:29NFL, if I'm not mistaken, is Spagnuolo, who's still great as a coordinator, right?
08:32But beyond that, not a heck of a lot.
