00:00A new generation of knitters are taking the world by storm.
00:04And 10 of the nation's most talented have joined me here in Scotland to battle it out for the ultimate crown.
00:11Each week they will face two mind-blowing challenges right here in our magical yarn bar.
00:20Oh wow!
00:22Wow!
00:24Previously, the knitters tackled their first solo challenge
00:28to reinvent a Fair Isle tank top.
00:31I've never done Fair Isle before.
00:33I'm in big trouble.
00:34Dear God!
00:35And then turned their needles to our team challenge to knit a sofa.
00:39I don't want to say that I've bit enough, more than I can chew.
00:42Ailsa's knits shone through.
00:44It's just so beautiful.
00:47Dipty came close to being cast off.
00:49Oh!
00:52But it was Gordon who was the first knitter to depart the yarn barn.
00:56Now, it's week two and our nine remaining knitters have a lot to live up to because it's Icons Week.
01:04Welcome to Game of Wall, Britain's best knitter.
01:08Hello, knitters, and welcome back.
01:18Now, this week is Icons Week.
01:21And for your solo knit, Diane Sheila would love for you to make an iconic doggy outfit.
01:27We would like you to use both knit and crochet to make a two-piece outfit.
01:35It has to be practical because if it doesn't fit the dog, then it's no use.
01:43We would like it to be something that's iconic to you, and it can be a person, a place.
01:48And we want you to use that as your theme to make this incredible doggy apparel.
01:56You have 12 hours to complete this challenge.
01:59Your time starts now.
02:01Let's get knitting and crocheting.
02:07Our knitters may be used to making beautiful garments, but working with animals demands a unique approach.
02:14I have never made a garment for an animal.
02:17With measurements taken from two Italian greyhounds, Dana and Dobby,
02:22the knitters must balance aesthetics and practicality to design for a tricky body shape.
02:27I haven't got a real-life dog in my life, so I've kind of made myself a little friend to help.
02:32I'm used to making things to measure, so when I need to make something for a dog,
02:36I need to have something to work from.
02:38The knitters must create a custom design based on something iconic to them.
02:43It's inspired by David Bowie.
02:45Freddie Mercury.
02:45What could be more iconic than a unicorn?
02:47Each knitter will create an individual design, but there are key elements they must include.
02:57All designs must incorporate both knitting and crochet.
03:01Knitting uses two needles to build rows of stitches,
03:04while crochet uses a hook to create one stitch at a time.
03:08First, knitters must create the body of the garment, choosing stitches that ensure both comfort and functionality,
03:17and a good fit around the legs, neck, and rump.
03:21Knitters can then add embellishments to bring each iconic look to life.
03:25Lastly, knitters must create headgear that combines comfort, security, and style in a piece that stays put.
03:35A yarn like this might take around 30 hours, but in the yarn barn, they have just 12.
03:41Doggy outfits, what makes it such a difficult thing to make?
03:46Small pieces can be more complex to knit.
03:49They really have to get shaping right.
03:51Especially a headpiece, because one stitch can be the difference between it fitting or falling off.
03:57Tricky business.
03:58For music-loving Meadow, there was only one icon she was ever going to choose.
04:07Freddie Mercury.
04:08I'm recreating his iconic yellow jacket that he wore on the A Kind of Magic tour.
04:14Meadow will be knitting a yellow jacket, embellished underneath with buckles and sixpence button fastenings,
04:20to bring her favourite frontman to life.
04:23And for the headgear, she has chosen to crochet a tiny bejeweled crown.
04:29Hello, Meadow.
04:30Hello.
04:30Obviously, you're, you know, doing something that is important to you.
04:34Queen's been my favourite band for years now. Me and my dad, we went to see them performing in Belfast.
04:39What do you think your family are going to think of you being here?
04:42Um, I think they're all still a wee bit surprised. It's quite a big thing for me. I'm still in my A-levels.
04:50Wow. Still.
04:52Could you ever imagine that you'd actually be here doing something like this on a TV show?
04:55Never.
04:56A competition?
04:57No.
04:57Knitting is very, very important to me as I want to be a fashion designer and without it, I just,
05:05I don't know what else I would do. I've pushed myself so far to get to this point and I really
05:10want to win to just prove to myself that I can do it and I have what it takes.
05:18After last week's ill-fitting tank top, library worker Dipti is hoping to bring a little bit of
05:23magic to her iconic doggy outfit. It's going to be sparkly, it's going to be, um, unicorny.
05:29Dipti will be crocheting a unicorn horn for her headgear, complete with an extravagant mane.
05:37She's chosen a mix of sparkly yarn to make her dog coat, which she'll be knitting together in all
05:42the colours of the rainbow. Anyone who's crocheted with this kind of fancy yarn will know that it's
05:48impossible to see the stitches in it. So it is far easier to knit with it than it is to crochet.
05:54I am a massive fan of crochet. I'm not that great at knitting.
06:01Does this look okay or does this look terrible? Charity Partnerships director Lydia is also
06:06kicking off the challenge with her knitting needles. Lydia. Tom, hello. Which icon are we going for?
06:13Loosely inspired by the Notting Hill Carnival.
06:18Drawing inspiration from the iconic Notting Hill Carnival,
06:21Lydia's sparkly doggy outfit will include a striking crown of knitted feathers and a coat using a
06:27feather and fan lace stitch. People at home who don't necessarily know what lace knitting is,
06:33can you give us a little rundown? It's using the holes to create shape and patterns so it should
06:39have a wavy look. I love that. Do you have a dog? No. No. Would never have a dog. People of Britain.
06:47Don't hate me, but no, I'm not a dog person.
06:56Last week, student Isaac didn't manage to finish either challenge. So this week,
07:01he's determined to stay on track. You're all right. You're doing great. It just needs to get on the dog.
07:08My design is based on the mascot of Philadelphia's ice hockey team.
07:18I went to university out there and it is just like a huge, huge part of my life.
07:21Isaac plans to knit his doggy coat into an ice hockey jersey with a name and even an ice rink
07:28embroidered onto the back. His headgear helmet will be crocheted using the loop stitch to bring the iconic
07:34Philadelphia Flyers ice hockey mascot gritty to life. So I'm currently knitting the body. This
07:40is the front part and then obviously I've got my armholes here. I am slightly concerned that it's
07:45maybe an obscure icon. I'm not sure if Di and Sheila are up to date on their American hockey.
07:52Notice this little dog here? Yeah, right? It's wolfy. It's much smaller than Olga's. It is,
07:58but it's not the size of the dog in a fight. It's the size of the fight in a dog, right? Simon is
08:03just housewife's catnip, isn't he?
08:09A few hours into the challenge, knitters should be starting to consider how to shape their dog coats
08:14to the body. So far, so crafts. Simon, what are you up to? My inspiration comes from buildings, big
08:21gothic, cathedrals. Going for lots of texture, moss stitch, just to try and really bring over that kind
08:28of stonework. Simon's outfit is inspired by iconic gothic architecture such as Canterbury Cathedral.
08:36For the headpiece, he will be crocheting a tiny bell hat and for the body, he will be using moss
08:42stitch to create a stonework effect, including a gothic arch. To embellish his coat, he will be
08:48crocheting a stained glass window in the shape of a paw print. Now that's what I call architecture.
08:56That's really interesting because moss is one of the most difficult stitches. To do well. To do well.
09:03Right. To get a good tension. I think you've got a very good tension on that. It really does look
09:10like stonework. In this piece here, I'm going to insert some crochet stained glass. Stained glass.
09:16I'm not a crochet, but the stained glass is more of a free-handed thing. So I'm going to make it up on the fly.
09:24You're taking a wee bit of a risk there. Yeah, a little bit of a risk. I'm going to,
09:28I'm trying to leave myself plenty of time.
09:36Stephanie, what's your plan for your doggy outfit? It's going to be a Chelsea pensioner.
09:40A Chelsea pensioner. Yes. Stephanie has been inspired by the iconic retired British Army veterans,
09:47the Chelsea pensioners. She'll be recreating their classic red and black uniform, doggy style.
09:55She plans to use fancy stitch to create a firm fabric for the coat and to top it all off, a crochet
10:01black tricorn hat. Chelsea pensioners are pretty well renowned for having the uniform that fits like a
10:09glove. I'm knitting with two strands because it's really thick. So with two strands, will it feel
10:15slightly stiffer when it's on? Yes. It's going to give it that tension to make it feel like a coat
10:20rather than a floppy jumper. Yes, and that's what I wanted. Great. Also creating a thicker doggy coat,
10:27but using crochet instead of knit, it's psychotherapist Tracey. It's Ziggy Stardust.
10:32Oh. David Bowie. When I thought of icons, he was the first one I thought of.
10:38Inspired by the legend that is David Bowie, Tracey's dog coat will spell out her favourite
10:43star man's name in mosaic crochet. Mosaic crochet creates a thicker fabric because it layers stitches
10:50on top of each other. But the real showstopper will be her recreation of the iconic spiky hairstyle.
10:57Oh, you pretty thing. Oh, wow. The main panel will be a rectangle,
11:04and then you're going to add all the... And I'm going to shape with knitting and with crochet.
11:11Okay. To ensure a successful fit, knitters can use shaping to contour the body or even sleeves
11:21for a snug fit to the legs. And Holger has got some grand plans for how to combine beauty
11:27and practicality within his design. Holger, what is your doggy outfit?
11:33It's to do with performance art based on the Italian commedia dell'arte.
11:43Okay. It's very high-flying, highfalutin for a dog outfit. Oh, wow.
11:48Wow. Holger has been inspired by 18th century Italian theatre. Of course he has. To emulate the
11:57flamboyant comic characters, he plans to knit a stripy pink and white coat complete with exaggerated
12:02balloon sleeves. His balaclava-style headgear is shaped around the ear holes and topped off with a
12:08miniature crochet crown. Bellissimo. We're working on creating some exaggerated shapes,
12:16especially around your sleeve. We're getting there. Okay. Eventually, slowly, slowly.
12:26So far, I've got the neck for the dog. I've split off for the two legs. I've done the back piece and
12:34now I'm working along the back. Elsa has been inspired by a Glaswegian icon.
12:39In the city I come from, Glasgow, there's a statue that's famous because it's always got a traffic
12:45cone on its head. And this statue is said to have inspired some of the world's greatest street artists.
12:52For her iconic outfit, Elsa will knit a grey jumper incorporating intarsia to spell out the dog's name
12:59in graffiti-style lettering. Then, inspired by the famous Duke of Wellington statue, she will crochet her dog
13:06a tiny traffic cone hat.
13:08I hope the judges see where I've gone with it. I'm kind of concerned that they might see it
13:15a bit silly, a dog with a cone on its head.
13:21Knitters, you are halfway through this challenge. You've got six hours left.
13:29At this point in the challenge, knitters should be finishing off the body of their doggy coats and
13:34starting to move on to the finishing details. Hi, Meadow. Hi. Let's see what you're doing.
13:43I've got the body done and now I'm working on the sleeves.
13:49Yeah. So you do use a twisted stitch. Is there a reason for that? It's just the way I've knit.
13:58Okay. It's quite interesting because twisting the stitch means you use less yarn.
14:03It goes tighter. So this is where we can see clearly that you're doing one row untwisted and
14:09one row twisted. A twisted knit stitch is when the needle is inadvertently inserted into the back
14:16of the loop instead of the front, tightening and creating a twist in the stitch. It's a common mistake
14:22made by new knitters. Okay. Thank you. Thank you.
14:32I am behind on time. Just a little bit apprehensive. Just a bit. Just a tad. Yes, it's a little bit tight now.
14:40The knitters have only a few hours left of their solo challenge to create iconic two-piece doggy outfits.
14:54Well, the sleeves are sleeving. Not as speedy as I like, but hey, what's new?
14:59While some have moved on to giving their coats their iconic look. I'm starting to brush down
15:03the fibres so that it has a bit of a spray paint effect and sort of look like graffiti.
15:08I am behind. First time crocheter Simon is having to simplify his stained glass panel
15:18into one basic shape rather than the colourful paw print. I'm just going to make up something
15:22around it to make it look like a wider stained glass. I'm not a crocheter. The stained glass is
15:28effectively winging it. By now, Knissers should be moving on to the headgear. Di and Sheila are
15:40expecting careful planning around the shape of the head and the ear holes to make sure those doggy hats
15:46stay on those doggy heads. For the hat, I'm basically recreating my mascot's head so it's completely
15:51fluffy. I'm probably going to tie it underneath the neck just to make sure that it can get over his head.
15:56It's a kind of a balaclava. There's obviously a fairly big space for the ears to poke through.
16:04I'm going to do the mane for hat in what I call unicorn fur. David Bowie's wig.
16:14And we're going to knit the tri-corners round and then fold them up. In my head it works,
16:20but whether it actually works on the dog, I don't know. Yeah.
16:24There would be some gold parts going along across to make it a little wee crown.
16:31So Di and Sheila earlier, they told me about how the twisted stitch actually changes the inside as
16:36well. So that was something new because I'm still learning. I still have a lot to learn with my knitting
16:43and I'll hopefully do more in the next few years at university and stuff and then
16:48to go on to being a designer. That's the end goal.
16:53Knitters and hookers.
16:55Knitters and hookers.
16:5730 minutes.
16:58Oh!
16:59God, no!
17:01How many?
17:0230 minutes.
17:03No!
17:03Oh, gosh.
17:04You've got to get those on, sew that up.
17:08I'm in the process of making my little feathers for the headpiece.
17:11At carnival, you make things very last minute.
17:13I've still got one more seam to do, but I decided I would sew it up.
17:21Holger.
17:23So this is the jumper.
17:24This is the post seam.
17:24This is the jumper.
17:27Love it.
17:28And Dipti, where are you at?
17:30Hello.
17:31Coat's finished.
17:32Unicorn is nearly done.
17:33Looks great.
17:39What am I going to do with that?
17:41Kind of wanting more colours in it like that, but...
17:47So that's me.
17:51Knitters and hookers, that is your time up.
17:54Time to put those outfits on those little doggies.
17:57That's nine doggy two pieces in just 12 hours.
18:05I did literally as much as I could right up to a wire.
18:08It was a little bit panicky at the end, but I think I did all right.
18:14Well done, knitters.
18:16Now it's time for Di and Sheila to decide who's made a dog's dinner
18:20and whose outfit is the dog's bol...
18:22Actually, I don't think we can say that.
18:24We probably shouldn't say that.
18:25I don't think you should, Tom.
18:26Anyway, release the hounds.
18:29First up, Dipti.
18:31Our designs today are modelled by doggy superstars Dobby and Dana,
18:35who love long walks, treats, and playing dress-up.
18:41Yes!
18:44Oh my gosh.
18:45Awwww.
18:45Awwww.
18:56She's so beautiful.
19:00Awwww.
19:01They're tears of joy.
19:03She's just absolutely beautiful.
19:06I've got to really congratulate you on your knitting here.
19:10Thank you.
19:10Because I know that that was not your strongest point.
19:14No.
19:15We've got the lovely mane here, and then we've got the headpiece.
19:18The horn is even bigger and better and blitzier than we had been expecting.
19:22Thank you very much, Dipti.
19:23Thank you.
19:23Thank you.
19:24Lydia.
19:36The glitter.
19:37The glitter.
19:37The glitter.
19:38The colours work incredibly well.
19:42Very much like the Feather and Fan lace pattern.
19:46Because it does really allow the dog to move.
19:49All the stitches that you used were entirely appropriate.
19:56Tracy.
19:56I think you've embodied Bowie in that head.
20:10Well done.
20:13It's beautifully executed.
20:15You know, it's the crochet.
20:16Really lovely, fabulous crochet.
20:19My reservation is in the stiffness of the coat.
20:22It doesn't show her beautiful form and shape.
20:28She's ended up with bare shoulders and a bare chest.
20:33Elsa.
20:44The lettering is fab.
20:46I haven't really seen that done before, and I really love it.
20:49The shadowing effect really, really works.
20:54It's fab.
20:55Thank you.
20:56Thank you.
20:56Well done, Elsa.
20:57Thank you.
20:58And Isaac, you're up next.
21:02Such a good boy.
21:14I love this crocheted loop stitch.
21:16So the hat is fun, but in terms of working for the dog,
21:23I'm not sure that the headpiece works.
21:25One good shake and the headpiece goes.
21:30Simon.
21:34Oh!
21:34So your idea was this was a stained glass motif?
21:49Yeah.
21:50Yeah.
21:53I only realised when I was making it how big it had got,
21:57and I was just like, gah, I can't really fit anything else in there.
22:01I would have liked to see more different colours there.
22:06I loved the gothic arch that you made.
22:09The moss stitch works incredibly well,
22:11but it's been slightly swallowed up by the stained glass.
22:14Yeah.
22:16Meadow.
22:17I'm concerned about the fit.
22:29I think it looks too stretched.
22:32This should not be as tightly pulled over the back.
22:38We do love the crown.
22:39We absolutely do.
22:40And the construction's really excellent.
22:43You've shown some really lovely crochet skills there.
22:45But it's not the most secure.
22:48Mm-hmm.
22:49It doesn't quite fit the practical part of the brief.
22:56Holger.
22:58No.
23:00Go on, be fabulous for me.
23:11I love it.
23:12I have to say, um,
23:13it's incredibly well done.
23:19I just do think it's beautiful.
23:20It's beautifully made.
23:21Thank you.
23:22And I always cry when I see something beautiful.
23:29God.
23:30I really appreciate the skill in it.
23:36You have achieved a headpiece that stays on.
23:39Congratulations.
23:40The execution of what you've done is pretty flawless.
23:44Thank you.
23:51Stephanie.
23:52What I love about the design is the back.
24:04You've got this great pattern running all the way down, which gives it a tailored look.
24:14I'm less excited about the join here.
24:20It's not been sewn up quite so well.
24:25This is a bit messier than the rest.
24:27The hat, I mean, it's incredibly cute.
24:30It's incredibly cute.
24:31Yeah.
24:31But it's not been engineered, which is what we were really looking for.
24:35Thank you very much, Stephanie.
24:38Thank you.
24:39Thank you.
24:43Knitters, huge congratulations on all of those amazing outfits.
24:54The judges had said about my increases being a wee bit random and stuff.
24:57I was sort of winging it a bit as I went along.
25:01I didn't really mean to make Di cry.
25:06I know it was happy tears, but it always makes me feel emotional as well.
25:20Back in the yarn barn, it's time for our team knit and one final chance to impress our judges
25:26before the cast off.
25:28For this week's group challenge, you are going to be split into three teams of three
25:33to create an iconic 80s jumper.
25:40Wow.
25:41So the 80s is famous for graphic, really iconic, inventive designs.
25:49You can see we're wearing designs I made in the 80s.
25:52So we will be giving you a vintage 80s pattern for a women's jumper.
25:59And we'll be asking you to make it in mohair.
26:05Just like my leg warmers.
26:06Very 80s.
26:08Totally 80s.
26:09We will be expecting to see 80s style motifs and patterns.
26:15We will also be looking for intarsia knitting.
26:23And as always, the group challenge is judged blind.
26:26So I'm going to ask Di and Sheila to leave the yarn barn.
26:29We're going to be splitting you up into three teams of three.
26:32So in team one, Simon, Dipti and Isaac.
26:36In team two, Holger, Tracy and Lydia.
26:41And in team three, Elsa, Meadow and Stephanie.
26:46You have ten hours.
26:47Your time starts now.
26:49Let's get knitting.
26:54Okay, are we ready for this?
26:55Yes.
26:56Yes.
26:57I'm so excited.
27:00To transport them back to the 80s, we've given the teams an original vintage
27:04jumper pattern that they can adapt.
27:06Should we deal with shape first?
27:08Or would it be a loose crop?
27:10Yeah, okay.
27:11To create their bold 80s motifs, knitters must use intarsia,
27:16a technique used to create distinct blocks of colour.
27:19I like the idea of doing something really big on the front.
27:22Maybe the music or so.
27:23Music.
27:25I like that idea.
27:28They will be using mohair wool only, a famously fuzzy and fluffy yarn,
27:33which brings its own challenges.
27:37What are some of the things that could go wrong with using mohair?
27:40With all these extra fibres, it does mean that their intarsia skills really need to be up there.
27:46Yep.
27:47How are the teams going to work together to construct this piece?
27:51Sheila and I do it all the time.
27:53If we've got to get something to a film or a catwalk or whatever, we split it up front, back,
27:58and one person to both sleeves.
28:01But you have to work together to make it cohesive.
28:03Well, that's a challenge, especially in 10 hours.
28:06First, each team must agree on a unified design for their garments.
28:14You know what I think is super 80s is this whole kind of like scar, black and white checkerboard look.
28:19Do you know what I mean?
28:20OK, and then we can put silver or something down that.
28:24All right.
28:26Yeah, no, it's just, I think the whole black and white against the colour is quite strong.
28:32We could put ribbons and embellishments. I've got lots of embellishments.
28:35Yeah, hold on, Tracy, hold on, hold on.
28:36Otis jumpers were full of embellishments. We need to have embellishments on this.
28:39OK, let's make sure we can get the body done, make it look good, and go from there.
28:44Yeah.
28:45After much debate, the team has chosen Holger's checkerboard design.
28:51Sticking with the vintage shape, they'll use Intarsia to knit a black and white diagonal
28:55checkerboard motif over pastel pinks and purples. Tracy and Lydia will handle the body,
29:01while Holger knits the sleeves.
29:04OK, so the principle design, I think we're good.
29:06And then decide if we're going to embellish it, we might have some time.
29:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:10Over on the other team.
29:14What if we put balloons on it?
29:16Yeah, yeah. Then we can mimic that on the sleeves and have like a balloon sleeve as well.
29:22Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's a good idea.
29:23So balloons on the balloon sleeve.
29:25Yeah, we could have it.
29:26Or the balloon strings could be the balloon strings.
29:30Yes.
29:31That's such a good idea.
29:34Their crop jumper has one long balloon sleeve and one short,
29:37and an Intarsia balloon design on the front, complete with balloon strings.
29:41Isaac will knit the front of the jumper, Dipti will tackle the back,
29:45while Simon will take on the balloon sleeves.
29:49There may not be 99 of them, but Intarsia balloons will be a challenge.
29:53If we do one balloon, we can incorporate colour into it,
29:55so it could be like a zigzag balloon or something like that.
29:57OK, try not to make it too concrete.
29:59I was just thinking of maybe a simple balloon.
30:01OK.
30:01Just in case there's someone who's not great at Intarsia.
30:04That's fair, that's fair.
30:05Over on the more musically-minded team, Meadow is running up that hill.
30:11I like it.
30:13I mean, I kind of want to do the front.
30:14I'm happy for you to do the front.
30:17The team have chosen to capture the spirit of 80s music,
30:21with the guitar motif on the front and belt buckle design along the hem,
30:26and sheet music on the back.
30:28Stephanie will be doing the sleeves, Elsa will be on the back,
30:31while Meadow will be working on the front lead guitar.
30:36I thought the guitar would be a really nice piece for me to take on.
30:39I'm not too experienced in Intarsia, but I'm quite excited to take on this big piece
30:44and really push myself and see if I can do it, because I think I can.
30:46About to start the Intarsia, it's the start of what's going to be a balloon.
30:58Intarsia is made up of blocks of colour, which for the checkerboard team should work well.
31:03The checkerboard pattern is an Intarsia.
31:05Yeah, so isn't Intarsia that's a little bit easier to knit?
31:09Yeah, yeah.
31:11For the guitar and balloon teams who need to create curved shapes,
31:14this means carefully plotting their design, shifting colour blocks gradually to simulate the curve.
31:21Think of it like building a curve out of Lego bricks.
31:23Without precise planning, the curve could end up looking distorted.
31:27I've never done this technique before, and it's really hard to see the stitches in my head.
31:32Where? See that?
31:34No, I didn't see that.
31:35This is horrendous.
31:36It's literally like knitting with hair.
31:38This is going to be a challenge.
31:39Just count them as you purl, Diddy.
31:41Because you need to do purl, right?
31:42Good work, thank you.
31:43I'll count them as I purl.
31:44Save some time.
31:45Please don't talk to me.
31:49Well, I need to find out a bit more about this one.
31:51How's it going?
31:52That's quite the design.
31:54Are you planning on putting any embellishments on this jumper?
31:57Yes.
32:00To be determined.
32:01Is that a time situation?
32:02That's a time situation.
32:03It's a personality situation, Tom.
32:05Oh.
32:05We've just got to manage things carefully, okay?
32:07Are you less is more?
32:08Yep.
32:08And you're more and small.
32:10I'm more is more.
32:11There's a bit of a clash of opinions.
32:13If he goes to the loo last minute, I'll lock him in and then just jazz it up.
32:16Oh, well, we'll see.
32:18Well, good luck and I hope you finish it.
32:21Yeah.
32:23Is there room for a little one in there?
32:25I do want to just show this because with intarsia and colour work, that is what's going to get turned into a jumper.
32:32So you can see where she's at and how much further she has to go.
32:37It's my first time doing intarsia.
32:38First time doing intarsia.
32:40Okay.
32:40You know, it's quite intricate to get like a good clean line when it comes to mohair.
32:46How are you making sure that that sits well?
32:49Not really sure.
32:50I think it's okay.
32:51Yeah.
32:51Okay.
32:53Well, I wish you the best of luck.
33:01I don't think I did it properly.
33:06You want me to count them?
33:07Yeah.
33:08All right.
33:09Fourth one in.
33:10You've missed one.
33:12I just can't keep.
33:17Knitters.
33:19Time call.
33:20You have five hours remaining.
33:24Well, how is she?
33:25I repeat.
33:27Five hours remaining.
33:29You're halfway through this challenge.
33:31With only five hours left, the sleeves are taking longer than expected for Stephanie.
33:36We need more time.
33:38So the team have come up with a design change.
33:40In the interest of time, we've decided to make a bit of a change to the shape,
33:44taking away a sleeve completely.
33:46They're new off the shoulder jumper means Elsa and Meadow will knit their panels up to the left
33:52shoulder and seam together.
33:53So rather than having a second sleeve, we'll have it cutting off under the arm.
33:59Also on the highway to the danger zone is Holger.
34:04My worries is the timing.
34:06If worse comes to worse, we sack off the second sleeve and then put like a big bow on the shoulder instead.
34:13I think it's a great idea. It's kind of more in line with what I wanted, something a little bit more out there.
34:20Somewhere it was always on the cards.
34:22I think we've found the balance, wonderful.
34:25Hooray.
34:28And I might get a sequin and you never know.
34:37At this stage in the challenge, teams should be finishing their individual panels.
34:42But the guitar team have noticed a problem.
34:45Oh, no.
34:51I just had to panic.
34:53I'm having the panic as well.
34:54About where the decreases are.
34:58Yeah, you've decreased on the wrong sides.
35:04Elsa has knitted her panel to cover the right shoulder.
35:08And Meadow has knitted her panel to cover the left so they won't join together.
35:12How on earth did we manage that?
35:24Are you all right?
35:25I feel really with-headed.
35:34Unfortunately, Meadow's had to step out.
35:36So we're sort of a little bit in flux.
35:47It's the final countdown of the 80s jumper challenge.
35:51The team should now be sewing their sleeves, front and back together to create one garment.
35:56The main pieces are finished.
35:57We're going to see how they assemble and then I'm going to start sewing.
36:01Simon's about to cast off the sleeves.
36:03Dipsy's finished the bag now.
36:04She's knitting some shoulder pads.
36:06I've never made shoulder pads before.
36:07I'm knitting shoulder pads.
36:09Like, it's like amazing.
36:13But over on the guitar team, they are a knitter down.
36:16Are you okay?
36:20Come here.
36:22It's going to be okay.
36:23It's going to be okay.
36:24All right?
36:25Like, just take your time.
36:26I want you to know that you are an incredible knitter as well as a crocheter.
36:31And today doesn't define you as a knitter.
36:36I feel like I have a lot to prove.
36:37Like, there's been times in my diving career, whether it's injury or whether it's any kind
36:42of, like, bad competition, like, don't fret about it.
36:45Like, you've got it.
36:46Just get back in there.
36:47Get your head in the stitches.
36:48But always bring it back to remembering why you knit and the love for it.
36:55Stick with it.
36:56You're nearly there.
36:57Hello, sweetheart.
37:10Where you were, I've carried on.
37:12Stick's really good at the back.
37:14Good.
37:15Thank you.
37:17With Meadow back, the team must come up with a plan to attach the front and back together
37:21so they have a complete jumper.
37:23What we might have to do is have really short straps and pull that right over the shoulder.
37:29We'll have to find a magic way of sewing it together somehow.
37:39I see something that resembles a jumper over here.
37:41Yes.
37:45Well, it definitely fits over my head, just maybe not quite my hair.
37:49Right, we've got still quite a bit of stitching today.
37:51Big, puffy sleeve.
37:55For team checkerboard, Lydia and Tracy are both knitting the new bow for their adapted design,
38:01whilst Holger seams the front and back panels together.
38:04Now I'm feeling the pressure.
38:07It's going to be almost like the checkered flag at the finish line, isn't it?
38:11And for the guitar team, they must piece together their panels as best they can.
38:15We need to just put it on a body just to see how low it drops. That's my biggest concern.
38:21Because when you put it up against the body, this piece, which is the underarm,
38:26actually becomes so low, it's revealing a breast.
38:33Knitters, you have one hour until your 80s jumper needs to be complete.
38:39Just one.
38:40Leave it out. Go and take a dive.
38:43Take a dive?
38:46We can do this, ladies. We can do this.
38:48We can, we can, we can.
38:49There's a bow, so that's the look.
38:53Yeah.
38:53That is the look.
38:54Yeah.
38:57Just a couple of quick stitches in there, mate.
38:59Yeah, I am, I am.
39:00It's not worth doing poorly, because if you do it poorly...
39:03Just stop talking, do your thing.
39:07Does it, is it reaching the other side?
39:09Are you sweet on it?
39:09Yeah.
39:10Let me get a pin.
39:11Pin it in.
39:12There you go.
39:13So that's one less thing to sew.
39:15Oh, jeez.
39:18Oh, jeez, sorry.
39:20Oh, guys, guys, guys, guys, guys.
39:27Quick check from the front, do you like it?
39:28Yeah, I'm happy.
39:30Yeah.
39:30She's done.
39:31She is done.
39:33There you go.
39:37There we go.
39:38Oh, the holders, oh.
39:40Oh, good grief.
39:46Bitters, needles down, your time is up.
39:50Yeah, we did it.
39:53Well done, girls, well done.
39:54We did all right.
39:56It's a jumper, almost.
40:00No, we've done all right.
40:01Team.
40:01Team.
40:02Thank you.
40:03Oh, brilliant.
40:05Tracey and Holger as a combination.
40:09Maybe let's not do that again.
40:15Well done, knitters.
40:16There's a lot of anticipation in the air,
40:18as well as a lot of 80s hairspray.
40:20All right.
40:21Speaking of, let's take it back to the 80s.
40:25Ooh.
40:25Ooh.
40:32Hey.
40:35Woo-hoo.
40:38Woot.
40:40Woo-hoo.
40:41Watch out.
40:45Woo-hoo.
40:46Yeah.
40:54Woo-hoo.
40:56Woo-hoo.
40:57Woo-hoo.
41:01Woo-hoo.
41:02Okay, ladies, what do we think?
41:11That's really, really lovely.
41:13Yeah, very.
41:14Well, you've got that kind of dance vibe from the 80s.
41:16Well, you have with the leggings, that works.
41:19Slightly cropped.
41:21I'm a wee bit concerned about the length of this sleeve.
41:26I appreciate that they were going for the balloon sleeve and the balloons,
41:30but it's...
41:31And it could have been pulled in tighter at the cuff.
41:34Yeah.
41:35Would you mind turning round and we can look at the back?
41:37So, another balloon.
41:39That's not quite worked, has it?
41:42You really need a carefully thought out chart...
41:45To get the curve, absolutely.
41:47Straighter lines are more straightforward.
41:50I do love that.
41:52Some really nice ideas in here, aren't they?
41:54Yeah.
41:56And what do you think of the second jumper?
42:00So, there's a guitar across the front,
42:08which is a very ambitious design, isn't it?
42:09It certainly is.
42:10A lot of detail.
42:12The definition, and again, that rounded shaping of the guitar.
42:18It's why we're not getting a really good shape.
42:20The thing about intarsia is that you actually shouldn't end up with any holes,
42:26and there are some here.
42:30So, some ink...
42:32Let me just look.
42:35Ah.
42:36So...
42:36They've knitted them both going in the same direction.
42:39Yeah.
42:41They don't align.
42:43The back is pinned, I think, because of the difficulty...
42:47With the asymmetry.
42:49Yes.
42:50It's such an ambitious design.
42:53It's not entirely worked.
42:56And what do you think of the third jumper?
43:03Well, Sheila, I think this is a really dramatic design.
43:06I like the graphic.
43:08Checkerboard.
43:09It's beautifully knitted.
43:10Nice intarsia.
43:11Good intarsia.
43:13Really good intarsia.
43:14Some nice surprises along the way.
43:17Yeah.
43:18This is...
43:20Nice.
43:20This is interesting.
43:23It's really lovely, isn't it?
43:24You like the ball.
43:25Yeah, I do.
43:26I think that's a lovely detail.
43:29You know that thing when you've got to think on your feet,
43:31and you know you haven't got time,
43:33and it's going on the catwalk tomorrow,
43:35and you end up thinking, what are we going to do?
43:38There's a real sense of people working very well together on this.
43:44You know, they're all singing from the same hymn sheet.
43:56OK, Di and Sheila, it's time to make your decision.
43:59We have made a decision,
44:01and in third place this week is the guitar sweater.
44:09So, who did that one?
44:11It was a really ambitious project.
44:14It's a shame about the neck and it not being finished.
44:18Yeah.
44:19So, in second place...
44:22..is the balloon sweater.
44:28So, can I ask who did this?
44:30I like the idea very much.
44:33Kind of light, airy, 80s fun.
44:36So, I guess...
44:38Yes.
44:39..there was a lot that we liked about this.
44:41One thing we particularly liked was we would be really hard-pressed
44:46to say that it was three different knitters.
44:48Thank you.
44:49So, I definitely do think I put too much pressure on myself.
44:56I was really worried about the time,
44:58and I also took on quite a big piece and complicated piece
45:00that I maybe didn't have the skills at the time to do.
45:03I hope I've done enough.
45:04I do hope I've done enough.
45:07I've done my all.
45:11What an amazing icon week.
45:13That was so much fun.
45:15But I have to get out of you.
45:18Who's in trouble?
45:22Well, Stephanie...
45:25..we did like the idea of the Chelsea pensioner icon, but...
45:31Her sewing skills here really let her down.
45:34The 80s jumper that Stephanie was a part of the team
45:37really was not a success at all.
45:40So, I think Meadow...
45:42..her intarsia skills were not great.
45:46She was ambitious, but maybe over-ambitious.
45:49There were actually quite a lot of mistakes.
45:54Who's up for big knitter this week?
45:56For me, Holger nailed it.
45:59His design skills are immaculate.
46:03Lydia.
46:05I love Lydia's design.
46:07Yes.
46:08I really do.
46:09So, it is a tough one this week,
46:11but we have decided.
46:21Well done, knitters.
46:23I mean, you've absolutely smashed Icons Week.
46:26But it's a competition,
46:28so we are going to find out
46:30who has reached true perfection
46:32and who will sadly be cast off.
46:36So, our big knitter this week
46:39is Holger.
46:44Many congratulations.
46:46I'm going to give Holger his sheep badge.
46:49There you are.
46:50And now for the part that we all hate.
46:59The person being cast off
47:01is...
47:03Meadow.
47:11You should be really, really proud
47:14of everything that you've done here.
47:19It's very sad to be leaving.
47:22I've learned so many life skills
47:23and being with the other knitters as well,
47:25seeing what different things they do
47:27and how I can take that into my own knitting.
47:28It's been so incredible.
47:30Meadow is so creative.
47:32I know she's not been knitting for very long,
47:34but I also know she can turn out some really good stuff,
47:37so I'm very excited to see what she creates.
47:39It's been a delight, you know,
47:41to be in her presence,
47:42to see her ideas,
47:43but her stitch work let her down, unfortunately,
47:46and it was just really sadly time for her to go.
47:49I'm really happy that I've taken part
47:51and had this experience
47:52and I've loved every minute of it.
47:56Next time,
47:58we're heading to the beach
48:00as the knitters design swimsuits
48:03for Team GB.
48:07So,
48:08a little on the skimpy side.
48:11An attempt to crochet
48:12a deck chair.
48:14Can someone grab me a pina colada, please?
48:16I mean, at this point,
48:17what am I doing?
48:18I'm not.
48:37You're a very happy.
48:48Thank you.
48:48I'm not.
48:48I'm not.
