00:00Welcome to Ireland's Fittest Family.
00:05Over 8 gruelling weeks, our families will go head-to-head in a series of events designed to push them to their limits.
00:13From the tough terrain of an army training camp, through the sticky swamps of hell and back, and the deep icy waters of Drahda Porte.
00:22It will all come down to these ramps in our grand final in spectacular Avondale in County Wicklow, where one family will rise to the top and grab that €15,000 cash prize and the title of Ireland's Fittest Family 2025.
00:37Welcome to Ireland's Fittest Family. We're back at our base camp in Gormanstown, County Meath, and it's the second of our heats in this year's competition.
00:57Last week, OG coach and three-time winner Anna Geary and newbie coach Michael Dower McCauley kicked off this year's competition as they went head-to-head in our first heat.
01:07There you go. Best of luck.
01:09After three nail-biting events and some intense rivalry, it was Michael Dower who got his two families through, leaving Anna with just one family left in the competition.
01:19Michael Dower, what a way to kick it off. Two families through to the quarter-finals.
01:22Two for two. Absolutely buzzing.
01:24This week, it's the turn of former Ireland teammates and Munster Ulster rivals Doneco Callaghan and Andrew Trimble.
01:31In our final heat next week, it's Fittest Family veteran Davy Fitzgerald versus Paralympic swimming champion Alan Keane.
01:41Andrew has 70 caps for Ireland. I've 94, you know.
01:46We've Andrew Trimble in as well this year. Like, what an athlete, what a rugby player. Incredible.
01:51Ultimately, whenever you get out there in the heat of the battle, I know I'm going to get fired up, excited and flustered.
01:56Doneco is a massive character in Ireland for the family. You know, he's a real funny guy.
02:01Andrew coming in now, though, might challenge him with that title because he's also a funny guy. He loves to mess.
02:06My only experience of coaching, I suppose, is coaching my 10-year-old and his mini rugby team.
02:10And my coaching style with that would be generally to be ignored.
02:15Each coach has two families in tonight's competition.
02:18Doneco's families are the Linehan's from Cork and the Hickey's from Dublin.
02:21Andrew's families are the Hilliards from Kildare and the McKenna's from Monaghan.
02:31Dunners!
02:32Yeah, hi!
02:32Andrew Trimble!
02:33Oh, hi!
02:34Hi!
02:34You're very welcome along!
02:35Yeah, great to be here.
02:37So you guys obviously go way back.
02:38You used to be teammates.
02:39You're going to show Andrew the ropes, you know?
02:41Yeah, I know you're trying to build this up as, like, enemies.
02:45And we are when we play it against each other, but we're kind of frenemies.
02:48Frenemies are worse than enemies, Dunners.
02:50I didn't know that.
02:51Let her get in your head, that's not true.
02:52It is your first time on Ireland's Freness Family.
02:54How are you feeling?
02:55I'm good, I'm good.
02:56Nice to meet the families.
02:57I got this look from the McKenna's, they're from Monaghan.
02:59And I got this look that I recognise I've seen before.
03:01And it's a look that says, why can't you be Tommy Bo?
03:09Tonight, all families will compete in two events.
03:11Box to the Top and in Bits.
03:13Box to the Top will have two heats, both with one family from each coach going head to head.
03:18The losing families will be given a 20-second time penalty for the second event.
03:23The two families with the best times in in bits will go straight through to the quarterfinals.
03:28The slowest families will battle it out in our army eliminator for their remaining place in the quarterfinals.
03:34First up, it's Andrew's family, the McKenna's from County Monaghan.
03:40We enter at Ireland's Freness Family because we think we have a chance in winning.
03:44The secret weapon would definitely be Colleen.
03:46She's late, she's fast.
03:47She'd be nimble.
03:48If he were looking for me, he'd never find me in the house, no.
03:50It's the last place he'd go looking for me.
03:52I'd much prefer to be outside, let her be on my bicycle, out hiking a mountain, out for a walk, a run.
03:58Caelan, he'd be very into the sheep and the farming side of it.
04:01He, at a young age, he took it to the sheep farming and he played football.
04:06And same as all of us, handball and rugby.
04:09Colmick's a very, very relaxed person.
04:11It's very, very hard to get a raise out of Colmick, but Colmick just goes with the flow.
04:15He'll not steal the attention or anything.
04:17He'll just, whatever's happening, he'll float with it.
04:19I think we can definitely win Ireland's for this family. That's why we've entered.
04:23Next up, it's Jonica Selinehan's from County Cork.
04:27We're a fairly competitive family when it comes to all games out in the garden, board games inside.
04:33We always like beating each other.
04:35Dad is a big golfer. He's golfing all of his life.
04:37He'd be fairly fit too. He goes for his runs there a couple of times a week.
04:40Goes to the gym as well, he'd be fairly active.
04:43For touching up on 60, he's not doing too bad.
04:45Rory is generally an all-rounder. He's very good at everything.
04:49He has an older brother who he's always trying to out-achieve.
04:54There's great rivalry between them.
04:56So whatever Sean does, Rory will try and do better.
04:59Ava's probably the fittest.
05:01She does a lot of, like, long running and cardio.
05:04So hopefully that could come in handy.
05:06She's very good at the plank stuff like that, balance and, like, flexibility.
05:10If there's anything to do with that, she'll be very strong.
05:12Sean's very strong. He likes going to the gym.
05:15And he's started MMA recently.
05:16Sean would definitely be the strongest.
05:18But in terms of speed, I'd say Rory would be up there.
05:22We've been training really hard.
05:23We've been trying to do as much running as we can and going to the gym
05:27and even swimming just in case anything comes our way.
05:29Sandbags, sweat and seriously steep hills.
05:36Oh, and a box.
05:37Welcome to Box to the Top.
05:39Tonight, members of the Irish Defence Forces will demonstrate this test
05:44of strength, strategy and stamina.
05:46One person from each family starts the race standing on an army kit box in the sea.
05:51On the sound of the horn, they must jump off the box, pick it up and run with it to their remaining family members.
05:57With the family are four 15kg sandbags.
06:01Between them, they must carry the sandbags and the box through the rest of the course.
06:05Next, it's a 200m run broken up by crawls through two army camo nets.
06:10Once through them, it's a run up a hill and onto a platform.
06:13The sandbags have to be placed inside the box and the lid closed.
06:17When all the family members are on the platform, they go down a ladder and up a wall.
06:21Finally, it's a run up a steep bank.
06:23When all four family members are standing at the top of the bank, they win the race.
06:27The losing family will carry a 20 second time penalty into the next event.
06:38We have a strategy in place.
06:39We're going to stick all the sandbags in the box, give it to Keelan and Cormac and let them run.
06:45And then let the girls get ahead and create a bit of a tunnel in the net.
06:49It's going to be Cormac standing out in the box to start the event.
06:51He'd be probably a bit faster than me.
06:54We're up against a good family there. It looked tough. So, fire our best.
06:5820 seconds actually might not be that big a deal.
07:00You said that to Joshman.
07:04Nerves aren't too bad at the minute, but at the start of the race, I'd say they'll be going.
07:0890.
07:09I'm a bit nervous about the first race. I think the cargo nets are going to be harder than people think.
07:14The teams we're up against do seem very good, but at the same time we're very confident in ourselves.
07:19So hopefully we can win the first event anyway.
07:21I think it's about speed and agility really. So I would say probably Ava, she would be the fastest and I think she'd fly through those nets.
07:30Might have a bit of trouble here, but anyway.
07:33Starting in red, it's Cormac McKenna and in yellow, Sean Linehan.
07:38We are ready to go for our first race of the day on Gormanston Beach.
07:423, 2, 1.
07:45Box to the top begins.
07:47Paula Donovan gets our competitors underway.
07:50Two 19-year-olds here starting this race.
07:54And they are right beside each other.
07:57And the terrain gets a little bit trickier from here.
08:01That box is tricky to handle.
08:03So Cormac McKenna in red is up to the rest of his family.
08:07And the McKennas from Monaghan have opened up a little bit of a lead.
08:10The first of these 100-meter sprints.
08:12It's a lovely day in County Meath.
08:16So this is Colleen McKenna out in front for her family and Ava Linehan is pushing hard too.
08:22What is interesting is the McKennas have put the sandbags into the box.
08:26The Linehans are carrying them.
08:28So this is the camel net crawl.
08:31So Ava Linehan through that already and she's gone.
08:36There's a little bit of assistance for the McKennas.
08:38Now they have two of those nets as you can see.
08:40And the lads have got to get the box through with them.
08:43This is not easy at all.
08:45So there's good teamwork from the McKenna family in red.
08:48And here's the rest of the sandbags for the Linehans.
08:51That army kit box is empty for the Linehan family.
08:55As always the role of the coaches here is very important.
09:01Calm, clear instructions.
09:03So the McKennas have opened up a nice lead haven't they?
09:07So Andrew keeping them calm.
09:12That's a bit confused from the Linehans.
09:14The sandbags are an issue.
09:16And the strategy isn't working carrying those bags.
09:20The McKennas have seen the difference.
09:22They put the bags inside that box.
09:24And they have a big lead.
09:26But the Linehans are closing or trying to.
09:29We're okay.
09:30So the McKennas trying to get up to the top of this wall.
09:34And then there's a steep bank in front of them.
09:36They are in pole position here.
09:38They've been very fast and they've made this look straight forward.
09:41And it certainly isn't.
09:42What about the performance of mum Sharon McKenna?
09:44She's first up to the top.
09:46Very, very impressive performance.
09:48And it's a victory for the McKennas.
09:50They win.
09:51The Linehan family from Cork didn't get that right at all.
09:53They'll carry a 20 second time penalty into the next event.
09:57Go on.
09:58It was just a great close.
09:59It was very exciting.
10:00It was fun.
10:01There are wee powerhouses of three of them.
10:02So they are.
10:03We stuck to the plan and it ended up working for us very well.
10:06Bring on time prep.
10:07Feeling good, yeah.
10:08Well, Andrew, congratulations.
10:10You guys won the first race.
10:12It has to feel good.
10:13I'm feeling great at the minute.
10:14I think we're probably feeling a little bit bulletproof.
10:16The two lads got off and just so strong on the carry.
10:20And then the two girls were technically getting the net up.
10:23A lot of things fell into place.
10:24So they did brilliantly.
10:26Jonica, as you well know, this is only round one.
10:30Yeah.
10:31And a lot can change.
10:32Of course.
10:33But I think they got it so right.
10:35To be fair, it was a brilliant performance.
10:36Credit where credit is due.
10:38At the end of the day, they were just a better family.
10:40It was all over really quick.
10:41I think I was expecting a longer race.
10:43And then all of a sudden we heard their falcon.
10:45There is a 20 second time penalty going into the next event.
10:47You do have to work a lot harder.
10:49How are you feeling about that?
10:50That 20 second penalty?
10:51Yeah.
10:5220 seconds.
10:53Probably a long way to come back from.
10:55His smugness is frightening.
10:56Honestly, stranger things have happened for his family.
10:59Sorry for being so cocky.
11:01Yeah.
11:02Look, you know, it could be the other way next time around.
11:04So watch out, Andrew.
11:05We're coming to get you.
11:06The next race is about to start.
11:08Now, can Andrew get another family over the line first?
11:12Will Dunica make a spectacular second half comeback?
11:15Andrew's second family are the Hillyards from County Kildare.
11:19My dad decided to apply for the show.
11:21He's been talking about it for years.
11:23As long as I've been watching the show, I dream to be actually taking part.
11:27Ellen is, I'd say she's, like, the strongest of us all now, but I think that she would never,
11:32like, say that herself.
11:33Just seeing how she kind of pushes herself is, for me, like, super inspirational.
11:38The big reason as to why myself and the girls are willing to take part in the show is because
11:43of the influence that my mom and dad have had on us both.
11:46In particular, my dad, because he's always been active.
11:50Me, Alana and Julia are all part of the same gym and we go a couple times a week.
11:54We're all kind of along the same kind of strength levels then as well.
11:58I think we will work really well together as a team.
12:00I mean, we're used to training together in the gym and certain competitions that take part there.
12:04We're often paired up together.
12:05So I do think that that will definitely, like, help within the competition itself.
12:08I think people might underestimate that team, you know, and they might think,
12:12oh, it's just all girls.
12:13Well, I think we might surprise a few people.
12:16We won't fear anybody.
12:17We'll be giving them everything we can.
12:19Donika's next family are the Hickeys from County Dublin.
12:22To be honest, I couldn't believe it, but really excited to give it a go.
12:25And it's really nice to do something together as a family, like.
12:28Conor, without a doubt, definitely he'll be our secret weapon.
12:30He's got a youth on his side.
12:32He's also extremely competitive as well, very fast.
12:34Our biggest strength is, like, our fitness.
12:36We're all, like, able to, like, keep up with each other and help each other, so.
12:40Cindy will be the team leader.
12:41She's super competitive, a good leader, is a strong runner.
12:45We all do parkrun.
12:46Jodie kind of shows up, says he does no training, and absolutely hair off at these amazing times.
12:51But it's very competitive.
12:53Ruby is my younger sister.
12:55We go to the gym together.
12:57We run together.
12:58It'll be amazing to win something together as a family.
13:01Got to believe, to achieve, and definitely think we all have the determination to win.
13:05So, yeah.
13:06Go Hickeys! Woohoo!
13:07Yay!
13:08The Leards are going to be great.
13:15Good group, really connected with the families, and looking forward to seeing what we can do out there.
13:19To have Andrew as a coach is just incredible for us as a family.
13:23We've talked tactics there, so we have a plan.
13:25The Nets, particularly, I think will be a challenge with the box and all the gear with it.
13:29Ready for box to the top in gold.
13:33It's Mel Hilliard.
13:34And in white, Jodie Hickey.
13:35Three, two, one!
13:38It's an all-Leinster battle between Dublin and Kildare.
13:42The Hickeys from Dublin, the Hilliards from Kildare.
13:44And there's an early lead for Jodie Hickey.
13:47Well, he's gone off very, very quickly.
13:49That's an impressive start and putting pressure on Mel Hilliard already.
13:53Well done, well done, well done.
13:55So the box is awkward.
13:57It's not particularly heavy.
13:59So, Connor in white for the Hickey family has gone off very quickly on that sprint.
14:04He's not bothering with the sandbags.
14:06Each of them weigh 15 kilograms.
14:08Here come the Hilliards, so they're all together.
14:10And they're off and running.
14:14So, Connor for the Hickey family is up to the camo net.
14:20And there's a nice steady pace for Mel and Alana Hilliard carrying that box.
14:25So, Connor is still pushing forward.
14:29But here come the Hilliards.
14:32Not too far behind under the watchful eye of Andrew Trimble.
14:37It's really difficult to move the bags and that box underneath the nets.
14:44And they're sort of stuck at the moment, aren't they?
14:49And, well, the Hickey family lost a little bit of time there.
14:53But now they're free of the first cargo net and up to the second one.
14:57So, Connor has gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:01And here come the Hilliards.
15:04This is tight.
15:05They're all bunched up together.
15:07And Connor has decided to carry those two vatics himself.
15:12He's enjoyed this.
15:13It's not over yet, though.
15:14Still plenty to do in box to the top.
15:16So, Connor gets to the top of that platform first.
15:19Dumps the two sandbags.
15:20And he's gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:21The Hilliards, though, they're bunched up.
15:23Will that be an advantage for them?
15:24They have to put those sandbags inside the kit box.
15:27And close the lid.
15:28Then they can move away from here and down the ladder.
15:29That's done.
15:30This is very tight, isn't it?
15:31A marginal lead for the Hilliards family.
15:32The ladder is tricky to get down.
15:34The Hickey family have put them in quite a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit.
15:37So, Connor gets to the top of that platform first.
15:39Dumps the two sandbags.
15:41And he's gone back to help the rest of his family.
15:44The Hilliards, though, they're bunched up.
15:45Will that be an advantage for them?
15:46They have to put those sandbags inside the kitbox and close the lid.
15:49And then they can move away from here and down the ladder.
15:51There's done that.
16:20All four of them there, they win.
16:22El Hickey family now have a 20-second time penalty into the next event.
16:29Oh, it's all going so well for you.
16:31It is, aye.
16:36Hillyards, we need to say congratulations to you.
16:38Well done, that was a phenomenal race.
16:40How are you guys feeling going in now?
16:42I think we're feeling pretty good.
16:44Yeah, we've got a bit of a spring in our step.
16:46It's a huge advantage, can't lie about that.
16:48I think it's a bit of a confidence booster too.
16:51I think we can all agree that the superstar of that race was, without a doubt, Conor.
16:56You were phenomenal.
16:58Very proud of him.
16:59He did super.
17:00Yeah, he was kind of the most composed of us.
17:03It was panic and run, panic and run for the rest of us.
17:05But he was very calm and composed.
17:08Conor was absolutely brilliant.
17:09He took off like a hair at the beginning and then still came back, got the two bags and
17:13was able to get up the hill.
17:14So, yeah, massively proud of Conor, he's done great so far.
17:17Donica, we're on a 20-second time penalty going into the next event.
17:21But I feel like there is a fire in the belly of the hickeys here now.
17:24Yeah, absolutely.
17:25I think you've nailed it.
17:26Of course, it's disappointing, but I think we made an awful lot of mistakes.
17:29So we kind of look at our own performance.
17:30The 20 seconds is going to make us, like, definitely fight harder for the next event.
17:34We kind of need to just forget about this morning and think about the next event.
17:38Very best of luck later on.
17:39I'll see you then, all right?
17:40Sure.
17:40Nice one.
17:41Get off!
17:49Get off!
17:49Ah, lucky!
18:05Oh, yes, that was great.
18:06Jonner!
18:07Hi, Laura.
18:08Oh, it's so good to see you!
18:10Talk to me about this beautiful creation that you've got.
18:13Yeah, I've been at it now for about four hours.
18:15I just wanted to take up something new, a new hobby.
18:18But it's quite time-consuming, but it's all worth it when you see.
18:21Look at that!
18:22Oh, that's so cool.
18:24I'd say there's about 30 years in this now, really, and truly.
18:27Absolutely.
18:27Trimble just arrived.
18:29Oh, wow!
18:30Oh!
18:31Hi, Andrew.
18:33I'll just be with you in a minute.
18:35Oh, my God, yes.
18:36I totally get it.
18:37Um, did you just whip this up?
18:39Five minutes.
18:40Five minutes.
18:41Yeah, just threw it together.
18:42I wanted to create the sand manifestation of Donika's rugby career.
18:46Okay.
18:47Missing tackles.
18:48And my rugby career, line breaks in general, X Factor.
18:52Oh, wow.
18:53Just, I mean, in between everything that we've got going on today.
18:56Um, yeah.
19:02Do you think I hurt his feelings?
19:04No.
19:05I mean, he did a great job, too.
19:07Yeah.
19:07Just different.
19:18Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
19:23Now, before the break, the McKennas and the Hilliards both managed to get the box to the top first,
19:28which means going into this next event, the Hickeys and the Linehans both have a time penalty.
19:33But as we know on this show, anything can happen.
19:36I always thought that families who did jigsaws together were a little bit weird,
19:40but this is actually great crack.
19:42Everyone has to complete a leg of the challenge, grab a piece of the jigsaw,
19:46and then put it back together because right now it's In Bits.
19:49Just like our families are going to be at the end of this.
19:51This is In Bits.
19:55In Bits is a brand new event where strategy is key.
19:59Each person must complete a different task in this square of the army camp's training trenches
20:03before pulling a piece of a Fittest Family jigsaw puzzle to the centre.
20:07First, we have a crawl under two camo nets.
20:10The next leg involves jumping over four straw bales.
20:14Then, it's a lung-busting run to collect sandbags from two barrels.
20:19And the final person has to drag a tyre down the length of the trench.
20:24The clock stops when all four family members are standing on their piece of the completed puzzle.
20:30This event will definitely have everyone in bits.
20:33First up for this new time trial are Dunnika and the Hickeys.
20:37They lost their first event, so they go into this with a 20-second time penalty.
20:41Dunners, Hickeys, here we go.
20:47We're not messing around now, are we?
20:48No, we're not.
20:49We messed around too much this morning.
20:51Now we're going to try to put that all right.
20:52This is a good course to make the 20 seconds back.
20:55It's four legs, essentially.
20:57Five seconds a person.
20:58I think it's well possible to pick up five seconds each.
21:00We're feeling good.
21:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:02We're a bit nervous, but that's not a bad thing, Laura.
21:05We need the nerves.
21:05You do, you do.
21:07Trimble's here three minutes, and he's giving it all that.
21:10You know what I mean?
21:11I cannot have two families in the Eliminator.
21:14Me competing against myself will be a nightmare.
21:17I need to drag him into a fight.
21:19In fact, I'm going for him.
21:20On the start line for the Hickey family from Dublin are Ruby, Jody, Connor, and Cindy.
21:28Connor, same again, boy.
21:30You're brilliant, yeah?
21:32Three, two, one.
21:35So first to go for the Hickey family, it's Cindy running the first leg and taking on the
21:42responsibility of that, and Cindy has to deal with two camo nets, which are down inside
21:49that trench.
21:52Remember, they are carrying a 20-second time penalty from the first event.
21:58So we'll see can they make that up over the course of in bits.
22:03So Cindy has been quick enough through there, powerful running style.
22:08She's got out of the trench and has to grab the piece of the jigsaw puzzle and drag it
22:14back down the course.
22:14Ruby's waiting, Ruby's waiting.
22:16Zonica certainly looks lively, doesn't he?
22:18Remember, rope to the corner, take it off or to the corner, rope.
22:21So the piece of the puzzle has to be placed in the frame.
22:24And then Ruby is tagged in.
22:27Go, Ruby, away, away.
22:30And off Ruby goes down into the trench.
22:33And this is the sandbag carry.
22:37So you'll see she has to get out of the trench, grab the sandbag.
22:41Off the top of the barrel.
22:44And jump back down again.
22:47Flings the bag in.
22:49And she's back moving again.
22:51One more sandbag to collect.
22:56That's done.
22:57Goes round the barrel.
22:58And into the trench.
23:02They're 15 kilograms each, those sandbags.
23:07So Ruby has placed those on the barrel and she's out of the trench.
23:12And here's the second piece of the puzzle.
23:16And Ruby is back to the rest of her family.
23:18Rope to the edge, rope to the edge.
23:19Now I'm going to tag him.
23:20Get on and go.
23:21Here we go.
23:22It's placed in.
23:23And third to go is Conor.
23:25Well done, Conor.
23:26And Conor has to jump over four straw bales, which are in the trench.
23:30That a boy.
23:31Well done.
23:32I think those bales may well be taller than Conor.
23:35But he's got past the first one.
23:38And now the second.
23:39It's a good technique from him.
23:41So good.
23:42This is quick.
23:43Oh, that's your best of me.
23:45You're getting stronger.
23:45Nicely done.
23:46Well done, Conor.
23:47And he's up to the fourth one.
23:48Past the fourth one.
23:51Out of the trench.
23:52And that's the third piece of the puzzle.
23:59Pushing hard now to get back to the rest of his family.
24:02They're just one to go.
24:04The Hickey family from Dublin.
24:06Didn't have a particularly long journey to get down to Gormonstoun and County Meath.
24:10This is Jody.
24:12And Jody, when he gets into the trench, will have to drag this tire.
24:14It's not particularly heavy.
24:19It's not heavy at all.
24:21It's just awkward.
24:22And it's slowing him down a bit.
24:23But he's really pushing those legs.
24:26Getting down towards the end of the trench.
24:28As you can see, the rope wrapped around his chest.
24:31Out he goes.
24:32And this is the final piece of the puzzle.
24:35The Hickey family will set the time for the rest to try and beat.
24:38But remember, whatever they finish on, we're going to add 20 seconds onto it.
24:41Get in the corner.
24:42We need you.
24:42Keep it going.
24:43Last two seconds.
24:44Come on.
24:44Under the watchful eye of Dunica.
24:45Jody is back to the rest of his family.
24:47Every second counts.
24:49And that's piece slotted in.
24:51They're all standing on top of the jigsaw.
24:53The clock stops at 5.09.
24:54But with the 20-second time, Kennelly, it's 5.29.
24:57We'll see how good that is.
25:00Kate Champ.
25:02Brilliant.
25:02It was definitely a better performance than this morning in that we didn't get stuck in any of our bits and pieces.
25:08We were all very proud of what we did.
25:11I think we all gave it our all, so.
25:13Jigsaw pieces are not light.
25:14Not after you've ran, you've jumped, you've carried sandbags to drag a jigsaw piece along.
25:19It's definitely not easy.
25:21Overall, I don't think we could have given it any more.
25:24My concern is that the time will cost us and that the error from the first event will cost us deeply.
25:30Next up for InBits are Andrew and the McKennas.
25:33Can they repeat their blistering first-round performance?
25:37Time to find out.
25:38The calm before the storm.
25:40Smiles on faces.
25:41Remember, we've got 20 seconds of buffer, so we don't need to go 100 miles an hour.
25:46If we go as hard as we can here and do our best and leave all out on the field now, we're planning not to have to be eliminated.
25:52I think Andrew deserves to be a wee bit smug, you know, because obviously both his teams did well this morning.
25:58You know, seeing Danica soul-searching on his phone to his mum or his wife, you know, do you still love me?
26:05That would be perfect.
26:06That would be a real success for me today.
26:08Lining up for the McKennas, we have Cormac, Caelan, Colleen and Sharon.
26:15Three, two, one.
26:20Second to go in bits are the McKennas from Monaghan for Andrew Trimble.
26:26And first up, it's mum Sharon, a High Rock specialist.
26:29She was very impressive in the first event this morning.
26:32She's got the camo nets to start.
26:33I think that one arm right ahead, just trying to clear that space, nice, well done.
26:37Watch your head, yeah, nice.
26:38Nice and calm instruction from Andrew.
26:41Well done, Sharon, great stuff.
26:43Sharon was in blistering form this morning.
26:47Good job.
26:48In event one, and it's a good, solid start for the McKenna family.
26:535.29 is the time they have to beat.
26:57And they're just through a minute on the first leg of this in bits relay challenge.
27:03So the first piece of the puzzle is back.
27:08And Sharon tags her daughter, Colleen.
27:12And her task will be to carry these sandbags, collect them off the barrels, carry them from
27:18one end of the trench to the other.
27:21Big into boxing and the G8, very strong competitor.
27:25And there's sandbag number one for Colleen McKenna.
27:29See him again.
27:30She can see where the second sandbag is.
27:35Good job, well done, Colleen.
27:36There it is.
27:37Let's go.
27:38And it's been collected around the barrel.
27:40And then it's a sprint with both of them down to the bottom of the trench.
27:44This feels quick.
27:47There's the second piece of the jigsaw.
27:48Let's go hard, Colleen.
27:50Let's go all the way home.
27:52Colleen McKenna drives the legs back down to the rest of her family.
27:56Two and a half minutes done.
27:585.29 is what they've got to try and better.
28:00Just put it around the right way.
28:03That's done.
28:04Third in is 19-year-old Cormac.
28:07And he is sprinting to that trench.
28:10He's got to jump over these bails.
28:13Oh, look at that.
28:15That was a brilliant bit of skill and technique from Cormac McKenna.
28:20And if anything, he's getting faster.
28:22Jumping over poses if they're not there.
28:24Right, let's go hard.
28:25That was brilliant from Cormac McKenna.
28:27Piece number three.
28:29And there's no let up in the pace at all.
28:31Go hard all the way.
28:32This is quick and he is going hard.
28:34Oh, dear.
28:35So, Cormac McKenna will finish this out three and a half minutes.
28:40Oh, there's a little bit of a mistake there that's cost them a second or two.
28:43But not fatal.
28:45The tire pull.
28:46And Cormac's quick as well.
28:47He's 21.
28:48Smash this, Cormac.
28:49Let's go.
28:49And they have smashed this from the first leg with Sharon McKenna.
28:54This felt fast.
28:56We get an exact time very shortly.
29:00Kaylon out of the trench.
29:02The final piece of the puzzle has been dragged along the ground.
29:07And this, I've laid down a marker.
29:09This is a really quick time.
29:12Very impressive.
29:12There's no time penalty to carry into this.
29:14So, it's four minutes and 22 seconds.
29:16Our new leaders, the McKennas.
29:184.22.
29:19Nicely done.
29:20No, no, no, no.
29:22It looked quick.
29:24It looked like that's going to be a time that I don't think anybody's going to beat that.
29:28McKennas, I would say you feel quite good about that.
29:32But on a scale of 1 to 10, how tough was it?
29:35Actually, it wasn't really that tough, so it wasn't as tough.
29:37The children were very, very strong, so they were...
29:40Andrew, I'd say you have to be so proud of that.
29:42It was unreal.
29:43Yeah.
29:43And then as we finished, someone said,
29:45I'd say that was faster than the army, was it?
29:48The McKenna family.
29:49Faster than me, army.
29:52Next up for InBits are Dunica and the Linehans.
29:55They lost their first event, so they go into this with a 20-second time penalty.
29:59Linehan family, isn't it mad to think you could have been out for a lovely round of golf today,
30:03but instead you're in the hardest course in the army camp?
30:05Look, our aim is to win this event, right, and get home early to Carp tonight.
30:09Oh, yes, I like that.
30:10Oh, sorry.
30:10Loved to hear this.
30:11Yes, well done.
30:12So we're very, very confident going into it.
30:14Typical Ireland's fittest family.
30:16We take something so wholesome, like a jigsaw, and we make it absolutely torturous.
30:21It's going to be tough.
30:21Ready to go for the Linehan family are Sean, Diarmuid, Ava, and Rory.
30:29Three, two, one.
30:33Paula Dunavant gets them underway, and first to go is 18-year-old Ava.
30:37Great job.
30:39Fast start from her.
30:40Remember, the Linehans are carrying a 20-second time penalty into in bits.
30:45They are a third of our four families to go.
30:48First to the cargo nets, just through there.
30:51Impressively.
30:52Well done.
30:52Great encouragement from the rest of her family.
30:55Same again now.
30:56Keep low, high back, high back.
30:58Brilliant, Ava.
30:59Outstanding.
31:00Well done, well done.
31:00Offering great encouragement to Ava Linehan.
31:03So she's out of that trench.
31:05Grab and go, you've 20 seconds of work.
31:08Puzzle piece number one.
31:10Been dragged back down the course.
31:12Brilliant finish.
31:13Keeping it.
31:14This is a brilliant leg.
31:15Ava pumping the legs.
31:17A little bit of a stumble, and she's fallen.
31:19She's fallen, Ava Linehan, but she's okay.
31:22And the rest of her family helped her out there.
31:25Here goes Sean.
31:27Quick start from Sean.
31:30Very fast.
31:32So he's got the sandbags.
31:34Which are on the two barrels ahead of him.
31:37There's sandbag number one.
31:39A little bit of a slip.
31:40The conditions underfoot are perfect.
31:43It's a lovely dry day, but it's going to be challenging at times.
31:48That's the second bag.
31:48He goes round the barrel, collects the other bag.
31:52Bit of a stumble again from Sean Linehan.
31:55But not fatal.
31:56Bags delivered to the top of the barrel.
31:57Two minutes.
31:58They've got a beat.
31:59But the quickest time to McKenna is 4.22.
32:01The Hitties back on 5.29.
32:04Whatever the Linehan's get here, we're going to stick another 20 seconds onto it after the first event.
32:11So he's in.
32:13Go, go, go, go, go, go.
32:15Third to go now is 16-year-old Rory Linehan.
32:19Bit of a stumble from him.
32:20He's got to jump over at the straw bails.
32:25Looks like fun.
32:26That's good technique.
32:28Spinning through them.
32:29And again, repeating the dose.
32:31Great work, Rory.
32:32So Rory is fast here.
32:34He's made up some time.
32:35Grab and go, grab and go, grab and go.
32:37And he's got to drag the puzzle piece behind him.
32:40He got so invested in what he was doing.
32:43He forgot about maybe the most important part.
32:45So this is a good time.
32:47Third one back.
32:48Heading for three and a half minutes.
32:50And last to go is Dad Dierman.
32:52He's a High Rocks fan.
32:53He's a big golfer.
32:55And he's got to drag this tyre.
32:58Down that trench.
32:59It's certainly not as heavy as the golf bag you'd be used to carrying around the course.
33:05Good solid pace.
33:06The rope wrapped over his left shoulder.
33:10And he's got rid of the tyre.
33:12He's going quick as well.
33:13Another stumble.
33:13The Lillians have had trouble just keeping their feet.
33:16And now the final piece back.
33:19They're not going to be the quickest.
33:20Get it on.
33:21As long as there's no mistakes here, they will be the second fastest out of the three.
33:25They just have to fit the final piece of the jigsaw in there.
33:28That cost them a couple of seconds.
33:29It all has to be pressed into position.
33:314.42 with the 22nd time penalty.
33:33It's 5.02.
33:34They are not safe yet.
33:36Outstanding.
33:37Hey, hey.
33:39Outstanding.
33:40Every one of you.
33:41Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
33:43Honestly, so good.
33:44Everyone did their leg really well.
33:46And yeah, I'm just delighted with everyone.
33:49They have a photo, a roar.
33:51They all put in a serious shift.
33:53So I couldn't have asked for more from them.
33:54We set it right to run.
33:55We've done the best we can.
33:56It was a very poor performance this morning.
33:58There was a lot of constructive criticism from our coach, Stonica.
34:01So I think we've bounced back.
34:04Whatever a boat doing really well, it's built confidence again.
34:07So the Lenehans are back.
34:09We're confident and it's great.
34:11Last up for in bits are Andrew's Hilliard family.
34:14With no time penalty hanging over their heads, they're in a strong position.
34:18For the Hilliards, this event should suit them.
34:22There's a lot of running.
34:23Well, talking about the 20 seconds, that is a huge advantage as far as I'm concerned.
34:28The only thing that can trip us up here is mistakes.
34:30As long as we keep a lid on it, I think we're in good shape.
34:33I think so.
34:33Let's go well, folks.
34:34Yay!
34:35Ready to go for the Hilliards.
34:37It's Dad, Mel.
34:39Daughters, Ellen, Alana and Julia.
34:45Three, two, one.
34:48The Hilliards from County Kildare last to go.
34:51And on the first leg, it's Alana.
34:53Good stuff, Alana.
34:54She is a primary school teacher.
34:56She's got the camo net crawl.
35:00For the Hilliard family to avoid the eliminator,
35:02they need to beat the Linehan's time of five minutes and two seconds.
35:07So that's the target that they have.
35:11So a good solid start from Alana under the first camo net.
35:16Well done, perfect.
35:17Good stuff.
35:19Andrew Trimble right beside her, and she's out of the trench.
35:24There's jigsaw piece number one.
35:30So a little bit of a stumble there from Alana.
35:33You may think it's easy to pull something like that along behind you.
35:36Sometimes it can chip you up, literally.
35:38Second in, it's Julia.
35:40She's got the sandbags.
35:42Running is one of her big passions,
35:44and she's pumping those arms and legs.
35:46She's down to the trench, and in she goes.
35:53Girls in this family all very into volleyball.
35:59Sandbag number one.
36:00And here is sandbag number two.
36:06All good.
36:07So Julia has got two bags and just has to deliver them down to the barrel at the bottom of the trench.
36:15And they'll be very nearly halfway there.
36:18Might empty the tank home.
36:19Julia, let's go.
36:20Empty the tank is the message from Andrew Trimble.
36:23Let's go all the way home.
36:24Over two and a half minutes done.
36:26Remember, it's 5.02.
36:27That's where they've got to be,
36:28and they've got to be inside if they want to avoid the eliminator.
36:32Second piece placed in the frame,
36:34and third to go is Ellen.
36:36She's got the straw bale jump.
36:41She is a scientist, an environmental scientist.
36:44That's a good solid start from Ellen Hilliard.
36:47Great stuff.
36:47That's perfect.
36:48We're in good shape.
36:49That's really good.
36:50So, bail number two of the four.
36:53She has to get over.
36:56Grab it at the end of the rope.
36:57Good steady pace.
36:58Empty the tank all the way home, Ellen.
36:59Let's go.
37:00Great stuff.
37:01There's the third piece.
37:03Ellen with the last bit of max effort through four minutes.
37:085.02 is what they've got to try and beat to avoid the eliminator.
37:11This is going to be tight.
37:13The third piece of the jigsaw placed inside the frame.
37:17Last to go is Dad Mel.
37:20Many years ago, he was on a sports scholarship in the United States.
37:25All the way home now.
37:27Great fitness and Mel, you can see that as he pulls that tire down the trench.
37:32They're not going to do it.
37:34They're just going to miss out.
37:36Mel has the final piece of the jigsaw.
37:38So, the Hilliard family, because they couldn't beat the Linehan's time of 5.02,
37:43they've been very close, haven't they?
37:44They really have been very close.
37:45They've no time penalty to carry into this.
37:47Clock stops at 5.14.
37:49They are in the eliminator, the Hilliards.
37:52Thank you, everybody.
37:53Well done, folks.
37:55Great stuff.
37:57So, with all four races complete, the McKennas and the Linehans have got the fastest times,
38:02with the Hilliards and the Hickies at the bottom half of the scoreboard.
38:06Despite their time penalty, the Linehans remain in second place,
38:09and along with the McKennas, grab a place in the quarterfinals,
38:13leaving the Hilliards and the Hickies in the eliminator.
38:16Welcome back to Ireland's Fittest Family.
38:40Now, before the break, we saw Andrews McKennas and Dunneka's Linehans both guarantee themselves a spot in our quarterfinals.
38:47But there's still one spot up for grabs.
38:51And it's a Trimble vs. O'Callaghan eliminator for the Hilliard and Hickey families.
38:55It's time now for the eliminator, where Andrews Hilliards are going to take on Dunneka's Hickies.
39:01But will Andrew continue that winning streak for our newbie coaches by bringing two families through to the quarterfinals?
39:08Let's find out.
39:09Tonight's eliminator will be relentless.
39:15First, our families must flip a heavy truck tyre for 50 metres down the runway
39:19until it's completely past the Fittest Family barrels.
39:23Next, it's a climb over a 2.6 metres high container and up and over three round straw bales.
39:30After that, they have to carry a 50 kilogram army training log to a pallet with eight sandbags.
39:36They have to carry those to another pallet before tackling our eight foot or 2.4 metres high wall.
39:42Once over that, it's a run up our famous ramp.
39:45The first family with four people standing at the top wins the race and a place in the quarterfinals.
39:56The entire day, it does feel like it's been a marathon of the day.
40:00It's going to come down to a couple of moments.
40:02That ramp at the end, that's going to be the big one.
40:06You know, I did always want to have a go at the ramp, so I'm going to get that chance now.
40:14There's parts of the course that will make it harder with the wet weather, particularly the ramp at the end.
40:20Hoping someone's going to get out with a towel before we go up it.
40:22No, I'm absolutely looking to finish Trimby and get rid of one of his families.
40:27It'd be great. Take the smugness off him.
40:29It kind of feels like there's a change in tone in the last kind of ten minutes.
40:34There's a seriousness that's descended on the whole group.
40:38We're going to have to see if it's going to be beginner's luck or a lot of experience.
40:42See you soon.
40:42Thank you, Lord.
40:42Thank you.
40:43Are we still friends?
40:44No, I'm chatting in about six minutes.
40:48The Eliminator is about to begin.
40:51For the Hilliard family in gold, it's Ellen, Julia, Alana and Mel.
40:57And for the Hickeys in white, it's Jodie, Connor, Ruby and Cindy.
41:02Three, two, one.
41:08That place in the quarterfinal is on the line here for the Hilliards in gold, closest to us.
41:15And the Hickey family wearing white on the left of your screen.
41:18So this tyre, well, the Hilliards appear to be taking turns with this.
41:24So just going two at a time, but it's more of a combined effort from the Hickey family, as you can see.
41:29The weather has taken a little bit of a turn.
41:36And it's a lead at the minute for the Hilliards, so their strategy is working a little better under the watchful eye of Andrew Trimble.
41:44And it's not easy to keep that tyre going straight, but the Hilliards have managed to do that.
41:53And they are first through.
41:54They have to go around the barrel.
41:56And here they are at the container, which is 2.6 metres high.
41:59It's all about teamwork.
42:05Clear strategy.
42:06They have an order.
42:07You can hear they're going to win the Hickey family.
42:09So Julia Hilliard is first up for her family on top of the container.
42:13And there's Connor for the Hickey family.
42:15He's at some day, just 14 years of age.
42:17And it's not over yet.
42:19Give him space.
42:20Give him space.
42:21So, and that is Jodie about to get up there to make it 3 for the Hickey family.
42:27Mel Hilliard is finding that difficult.
42:30It's not meant to be easy, and it certainly is not easy.
42:33And Andrew just has to reposition that mask for Mel.
42:36And Andrew's got a hold of the lip at the top of the container.
42:40And his three daughters are dragging him up there.
42:43So all four Hilliards are on top of the container.
42:47It's a bit more of a battle for the Hickey family, but they're sorted now.
42:51And then you've got to get back down the other side.
42:542.6 metres, a couple of stumbles there.
42:57It's a long way down, but they are bunched up, falling all over the place.
43:03Here we go with the straw bales.
43:06This eliminator has everything in it.
43:08It's a serious test of fitness, of strategy, of resilience, mental toughness, the works.
43:14Just drag her up, drag her up, drag her up.
43:17And they've lost a little bit of time there, the Hickey family.
43:19Conor is the anchorman, isn't he?
43:23There's Mel Hilliard.
43:25Well done, well done.
43:27Still a long way to go.
43:30And the prize is big, a place in the quarterfinals.
43:33This log, the army training log, weighs 50 kilograms.
43:39And off they go.
43:40A lead for the Hilliards on the left in gold.
43:43But it's certainly not much of a lead.
43:45You wouldn't be writing home about this.
43:46So they get rid of the training log.
43:50And now they've got to move these sandbags from one pallet to the other.
43:54They've taken them all, both families.
43:57They are neck and neck.
44:01So big sandbags delivered.
44:02And this wall is eight feet high, 2.4 meters high.
44:10Really the same gig, smaller than the container.
44:16At this stage there, legs, arms, everything burning.
44:19Nothing is straightforward.
44:21So Conor is the first over for the Hickey family.
44:24Here come the Hilliards.
44:25So they've got two up at the top.
44:30And they can help the others, can they?
44:33Or will they be able to?
44:35So the rain has been coming down steadily all the way through this eliminator.
44:39And it's just making things much more difficult.
44:42Everything is quite slippy.
44:44But the Hilliards now, the four of them are over that final wall.
44:48And now they get a look at the ramp.
44:49And the Hickey family are there as well.
44:52So it's come down to this.
44:54Mel Hilliard on the left and Jody Hickey on the right.
44:57And Mel has got a hold of the top lip of that.
44:59Jody's come straight back down.
45:01So Mel trying to drag himself up there.
45:03Andrew Trimble has been very cool and calm and collected.
45:06It's a simple, straightforward message for him.
45:08So the Hilliards have got one up.
45:09The Hickey's no one at the moment.
45:11And you can see just how slippy that ramp is.
45:14So Jody Hickey is having another go.
45:17And he's failed too.
45:18And one of the Hilliards has come back down as well.
45:21So the tension builds and grows.
45:23The rain continues to fall.
45:26And only Mel Hilliard has managed to get up to the top of that ramp.
45:29Go on, go on, go on.
45:31You can see the stress in Dunica's face.
45:33You can hear it in his voice.
45:35Another attempt, another fail on both sides.
45:39This is amazing.
45:41Never seen anything like this before.
45:43But it's just like an ice ring.
45:48So Andrew Trimble deciding to use the coat, using anything he can to try and dry that ramp.
45:54Connor for the Hickey family.
45:56Another attempt, another fail.
45:59Come on, let's see you, Jody.
46:00Let's see you.
46:01Jody Hickey has got a hold of the lip on the top of the ramp.
46:04Oh, what's going on down again?
46:06With every second, Mel's leap to the top for the Hilliard family looks even more impressive.
46:12But the rain is still falling.
46:14The ramp is so slippy.
46:17And Jody was so close again.
46:18Another go, so that, is that Ellen?
46:23Yes, it is.
46:23Ellen's up there.
46:24Two for the Hilliards.
46:25Brilliant stuff.
46:26Absolutely amazing.
46:28How did she manage to do that?
46:30The Hickey's still haven't got anyone up there.
46:33And we carry on again, and again, and again.
46:36And referee Paul O'Donovan has decided to call this.
46:45What's going to happen here?
46:48The health and safety of the families is always the paramount concern.
46:51So it just became unsafe for them to try and try any more attempts to get up the ramp.
46:56The ramp is no longer fit for purpose.
46:57So we've decided that we're going to base the result of the Eliminator on the fastest time in the time trial.
47:04Well, that means that the family going through to the quarterfinal is going to be the Hilliards.
47:08You just have the fastest time in the time.
47:09Well done, guys.
47:13Thank you.
47:15It was just getting slippery and slippery.
47:17It was more so you're actually afraid then, is one of us actually going to hurt ourselves?
47:20So definitely was the right call, I think.
47:22That wasn't a ramp.
47:23It was a water slide.
47:24We are disappointed.
47:25Disappointed that we didn't even get one of the guys up.
47:27But, like, it was impossible.
47:30For the Hickeys, you should be so proud of yourselves.
47:32Honestly, incredible.
47:33Your endeavour all day, and especially Conor.
47:36I'd say Conor was just, for me, the standard of the whole year.
47:40Amazing.
47:41We're all dead proud of you.
47:42Yeah.
47:43So fantastic to have you, Hickeys, and we're so sad to lose you.
47:46Thank you so much.
47:47The standard of coaches and families this year in Ireland for this family, you can't afford a mistake.
47:54And I'm having too many at the moment.
47:56I need to up my game.
47:57Hats off to the Hickey family.
47:59They were incredible.
48:00And we battled with them in the first heat.
48:02And we end up battling against them in the Eliminator.
48:04But to come out on top, it's just, I'm so proud of our family, the girls.
48:10It's just amazing.
48:11Andrew, I did say to you that it comes down to the ramps all the time.
48:14Were you expecting that, though?
48:15No.
48:16At the start, it was kind of funny.
48:17Yeah.
48:18And then it got not that funny.
48:19Not that funny.
48:20And then I looked up at one stage and Mel was up at the top.
48:23And he just looked like a lonely dad that wanted to spend time with his daughters.
48:27And we were trying to reunite this family.
48:29This is what it felt like.
48:30I'm delighted.
48:32You know, it's 2-0.
48:33Trimble, O'Callaghan.
48:34Do you know what the best part is?
48:35You get to do it all over again in the quarterfinal.
48:39Congratulations.
48:41Oh, that's it.
48:42Andrew Trimble has made a two from two with our newbie coaches.
48:46But will the beginner's luck continue next week?
48:48We'll have the last of our heats back at base camp.
48:51We'll see you then.
48:52Next week, veteran coach Davy Fitzgerald and swimming champion Ellen Keane go head-to-head
49:01in our third and final beat.
49:04Spin down!
49:05Spin down!
49:05Go, go, go, go, go!
49:06I like to be cool, calm and collected, whereas Davy doesn't do that.
49:10He just likes to throw his toys out at the prom.
49:13Where one of them will lose a family.
49:16Take your time.
49:16Be composed.
49:17You will get there.
49:18That doesn't sound like sabotage at all, Evan.
49:22Well, a different level of stamina is needed next as more house hunters trick around some
49:26cheap European homes.
49:27And then Mondo is in denial about his actions in First City.
49:31That's coming up at half eight.
49:52You're a warned.
50:12You're an INFORMATION PERFECT.
