00:30...in the classic car restoration business...
00:32That worked. I'm going to claim my thought of everything.
00:35...it seems I've finally cracked it.
00:37Happy customer. That's a good feeling.
00:39We've dragged our PR department...
00:42You've got to get your arses over here damn quick.
00:44...into the 21st century.
00:46Our reach on that day was 317,000 people.
00:50And as brand ambassador...
00:52If you happen to have a car in the UK, ever...
00:55...I'm leading the charge.
00:57Hey! This is brilliant!
01:00At least, that's what I thought.
01:02If you've over-promised...
01:04Yeah.
01:05...you can't under-deliver.
01:07Until my mum arrived.
01:09They won't listen to me.
01:10They'll listen to me.
01:11And it turns out that once again...
01:13...I'm in deep trouble.
01:15I'm going to have to do something.
01:16I'm going to have to do something big.
01:18Oh, my God!
01:19Oh, my God!
01:24Oh!
01:25Oh!
01:27I am pretty excited about this opportunity to go racing with Patrick, Blakeney Edwards, my mate.
01:47And there's a slight issue in that to race with him at his level, I've got to upgrade my racing license.
01:54But I've done a bit of reading and researching, and to do that, I just need to do a little bit of marshalling at another race.
02:01So thinking about it, that's like a win-win.
02:04So I've got to do a bit more racing to do some more racing, which is why I've dragged the MGB out of storage,
02:10and I'm taking it into the workshop to give it a once-over, and this is good.
02:24Morning, mate. How are you?
02:30I'm good.
02:31Good, good, good.
02:32But, um, why is that here?
02:33That's our race car, isn't it?
02:35Well, I can see it's a race car, but why is it here?
02:37Well, because I've been given the chance to do, like, a next-level race with Patrick.
02:41And to do it, I've got to get my license upgraded,
02:45and I do that by doing some more races in that to get the signatures.
02:48So I've brought this in to give to the lads, just give it a once-over and make sure it's not going to explode, and it works.
02:54So you're thinking of banging that in the workshop and using more workshop time?
03:00Quite a bit, and then they can come and just, you know, they do what they love doing, be my workshop team.
03:04They enjoy it on the day, for if they're being the team...
03:06Well, I'm not surprised that they enjoy it, but it's not making money.
03:09No, but if they're being a race team, it's motivational and...
03:14I'm going to be fair, Ian.
03:15I think, under my watch, that's not happening.
03:21Do you know what the Pomeroy trophy cost?
03:23No.
03:23That cost you ten grand.
03:25Can't take the lads.
03:26No, it can't happen like that, Rich.
03:28OK. I'll think of another way.
03:29OK?
03:30Probably already happening, isn't it?
03:31OK. Good man.
03:32See you in a bit.
03:40Reluctantly, you have to admit, Adrian's probably right.
03:43I can't be spending workshop resources on that.
03:47I mean, it's not like we're awash with cash at the best of times.
03:50But there's an issue.
03:54I have kind of already committed to a race at Silverstone coming up very soon.
04:02It's awkward.
04:04Bugger.
04:04While I let that little problem percolate, I'm hoping a trip up north to see an old mate called Ellis will help show Hadrian I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to business.
04:16So, I used to sell antique pine furniture and then deliver it in my little van.
04:23And I worked alongside Ellis.
04:25OK.
04:27Such a small world, eh?
04:29Ellis and I shared a love of bikes.
04:32And now, nearly four decades on, he's launching a new boutique British motorcycle brand and wants our help.
04:39This is awesome.
04:39This is going to be Smallest Cogs' first collaboration with a manufacturer and a brand.
04:43Yeah, it would be.
04:44I can do it with some social content.
04:46Oh, yeah.
04:46We're going to their big factory there now.
04:48No, no, no.
04:49It's not Honda.
04:52Oh, there's motorcycles, you see?
04:55Straight away.
04:56I'm happy.
04:57The prototype bikes have been designed and built in a home garage with the help of business partner, Ian.
05:04Hello.
05:05Hello.
05:06Ian.
05:07Nice to see you, mate.
05:07This is Lewis.
05:08Hiya.
05:09Nice to meet you, Lewis.
05:09Nice to see you, all right?
05:10Hi, how are you?
05:12Nice to see you.
05:13Nice to see you.
05:14This is Lewis.
05:14Hi, pleased to meet you.
05:15Pleased to meet you.
05:16Right, so we had the initial chair.
05:18I haven't seen one yet.
05:19Can we have a look at the bike before doing this?
05:20Of course.
05:20Of course.
05:21So, is this number one?
05:22It is number one.
05:24Genuinely?
05:24Yeah, yeah.
05:25So, these guys, because they're mad, at a time when the motorcycle market is struggling, and the record of small, independent manufacturers succeeding is...
05:37...disastrous.
05:38Um, you're launching.
05:40Will you stop it now?
05:42I think this is great.
05:44Positivity and all that, yeah.
05:44I mean, it's actually brilliant.
05:46I mean, I would never have forecast this when we knew each other 30...
05:50Forty.
05:51It's not 40 years ago.
05:51Fifty.
05:52Shut up, Ellis.
05:53Some years ago that you've been doing this.
05:56So, what is it?
05:57What's the story?
05:58Where's the engine come from?
05:59The engine's from Italy.
06:00What capacity is it?
06:01600.
06:02Parallel twist.
06:03Single.
06:04Single?
06:04Yeah, and we just wanted to make something like the bikes we used to ride when we were kids.
06:09We just tried to be as lean as possible.
06:11How many are you hoping to make?
06:12If we got to the point where we're making a couple of hundred a year, it'd be great.
06:16Right.
06:17Can I have a set on your motorcycle?
06:19You can.
06:19You can.
06:21Valet.
06:22Yeah.
06:22You can be nice to me now, because I was always scared of you when we worked.
06:25So, you guys, you were stouty.
06:29That's it?
06:31Oh, this sounds quite naughty, doesn't it?
06:34Yeah.
06:35I like the layout of it.
06:36It's quite off-road-y feeling.
06:39So, what's this one in here?
06:40So, this is the same engine, but different bodywork.
06:43It's got slightly more duck tail on it.
06:45It has, yeah.
06:46So, it's more of a flat tracker type style.
06:48It's quite cool.
06:49Right, so, what, when and how can the smallest cog help?
06:53We are looking for someone to paint the tanks.
06:55Yeah.
06:55But we also need some suggestions for colours.
06:58What have you got so far?
06:59So, we've got the blue, the black, and the red.
07:02And how did you arrive at those?
07:03He looked at the internet for ten minutes.
07:04I was thinking about my felt tip.
07:07Okay, so, blue, black, and red, these incredible new colours you've discovered.
07:10We'll come up with some suggestions.
07:12I'd love us to have a think about some sort of special finishes as well.
07:15When are you hoping to be in production?
07:17This year.
07:18Right.
07:18I can see it being quite a good launch with the smallest cog as well.
07:22Yeah, some sort of launch and get the press to see it.
07:27Ellis, I think you might be able to shed some light on a particular photo.
07:31I was doing a little bit of reading.
07:34When did you last read the book?
07:36Well, it had pictures in it.
07:37Hold on.
07:38Oh, that's not what I think it is.
07:42Just firstly, firstly, let's look at the first one.
07:45This was a long time ago.
07:47Now, there's a particular page.
07:49You might be able to tell me about this van.
07:52Well, firstly, that is an intact works van.
07:55Right.
07:55And on Richard's commute, one particular bend, there was a very old oak tree.
08:01I went off the bend and hit the tree.
08:03The van was totaled.
08:04Oh, my God.
08:04The following week, a new van was delivered.
08:06And history repeated.
08:07No way.
08:08Yep.
08:09The following week.
08:10Brand new van.
08:10Same tree.
08:11Same tree, same bend.
08:13I wasn't expecting that.
08:14Two vans.
08:15Insecutive weeks.
08:16Oh, my God.
08:17So that's crashing from day dot, then?
08:18Yeah.
08:19Yeah.
08:19So what's great is actually to see a one-piece Renault van.
08:23That's the only content he's got.
08:24I'm taking that off you.
08:25I don't know where you've got it.
08:26I'm going to go out and get one of those books.
08:27That one's going to be fun.
08:28It's a sale!
08:32This is kind of the ultimate men in sheds, and I'm not being rude to them when I say that,
08:35because they want to be in full production, and I think we're about ready to give this
08:38a go.
08:41A sense of fun.
08:55So the guys at MAC can go to any body shop, and they've decided to come to us, so I really
09:00want to show off what we can do, and hopefully we get the contracts.
09:04I'm not taking any pleasure in watching this video, because I know there's a race car crash
09:25coming, and I know it's my mate in the car, but I'm going to watch it anyway.
09:28And here he comes.
09:29He's lost it.
09:30Ooh, that nearly went over.
09:31That's up.
09:31Ooh, that's in the wall.
09:36Yeah.
09:37Well, actually, he's more than a mate.
09:38He's a colleague, Mark, sound man.
09:40I've worked with him for, to measure it, decades, on Grand Tour and Top Gear.
09:45He's a mad keen racer in his classic Mini, and, well, as I just saw, he bent it at an
09:52event.
09:53But the good news is, he's brought it to me to get it mended.
09:57Right, I'm going to go and see the wreckage.
09:59Nice to see Mark as well.
10:05Here he comes.
10:06All sound men have a van.
10:10And there's his van.
10:12There will be a soldering iron in there, lots of different types of tape, but more importantly,
10:17behind it, there's his little race car.
10:19Look at it.
10:20All right, mate.
10:21Hello, Richard.
10:21Isn't it lovely?
10:23Oh.
10:24It was a bit lovelier.
10:26This is the problematic corner.
10:27Ooh, ooh, it's bruised.
10:29Hmm.
10:29Yeah, what that is, is the wrong shape now.
10:31Yes.
10:32Has it bent the shell?
10:34It has bent the shell.
10:34If you open the door of truth here, it bolts in at the back fine, but here it doesn't want
10:41to line up is definitely a bit wonky.
10:43Oh, mate, we've got to get it right.
10:44It's a shame.
10:45But it's all right.
10:46I mean, it's been a rally car since the early 1990s.
10:48It's got these lovely Monte Carlo stickers because this car won the historic Monte Carlo in 2003.
10:54All we need to do is get Matt to go over it because he likes nothing more than getting things in the right shape.
11:00That is the job for him.
11:01If you think about it, it is interesting time, Mark's Mini coming in, because, well, it's kind of proof that there is work to be had from the racing world.
11:15So, I am going to take on board Hadrian's suggestion, but he didn't say don't do any more racing.
11:24Specifically, he said don't do any more racing using cog resources and money and people.
11:29Yeah, I think of a way around that.
11:32My amazing contacts.
11:33If this business becomes, like, a huge success, it's down to me.
11:40Hello.
11:41Hello, Les. How are you?
11:43I'm all right, mate. How's yourself?
11:44I'm all right. How's the mayor?
11:45Is it raining?
11:47Not as we speak.
11:48If it's not, check you're in the right place, mate.
11:52I've got a quick question.
11:54Yes.
11:55How do you fancy a trip to Silverstone?
11:57That sounds brilliant.
11:58You won't be standing around like spectating.
12:01You'll be closer to the action.
12:03Oh, hang on. What do you mean, closer to the action?
12:05Ah, you see, I've piqued your interest, haven't I?
12:08You'll have to bring the smaller of your farmer's hammers.
12:10Yes.
12:11And perhaps a screwdriver.
12:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll let you know.
12:14I'll let you know.
12:15Bye.
12:16Bye-bye, bud.
12:18Right, let's see who else I can rope in.
12:21Zog, how are you doing?
12:30I've put two coats of colour on.
12:31I'm really happy with the outcome.
12:34Anyone can do this.
12:35It's just a standard straight colour.
12:37And we've got ten tanks for me to have a play with,
12:39and I can literally do whatever I want.
12:41So that's where you've got to show your skill.
12:43Ah, Jamie.
12:53It's a bit early for lunch, isn't it?
12:55You wouldn't want to eat this.
12:56That's not paint, is it?
12:57No, this is urea.
12:59Urea?
13:00Yeah.
13:01From what animal?
13:02Normally a pig.
13:03So that's a pot of pig pee.
13:05Basically, yeah, but it comes in a crystallised form.
13:07So what we do, we dissolve that in water, reacts with the paint, and cracks the paint.
13:12It doesn't come out the pig like that, does it?
13:13No, I don't know.
13:13Because that would sting.
13:14Yeah, that would be gross, yeah.
13:16Have you done this before?
13:17No.
13:18Are you taking a piss?
13:19You are, literally.
13:24Dip that in, get that nice and wet.
13:26Oh, it's warm, it's warm, pig pee.
13:28You don't mix this with the paint, then?
13:30No, no.
13:31So this is going to recrystallise on the tank, is that the idea?
13:35Once it crystallises, you put a coat of black on it.
13:38And we won't know what pattern we've got until we've wiped off the crystals.
13:42Yeah, you can see slightly, but you won't get the proper effect until we put the black on.
13:47Plenty of pig pee.
13:48Right, am I doing this?
13:57Yes, please.
13:57It's a brilliant theory, it works on the internet.
14:00Now let's have a go in a professional workshop situation.
14:04Nurse!
14:07I've just been told Hammond is putting his hands on a paint gun.
14:11So, content for the Mack Motorcycles, content for the workshop, because Richard's on a gun.
14:15Let's go.
14:15Just clean it off now.
14:27And I mean to take just the crystals, leaving the silver to shine through from below.
14:31Right, and then just gently.
14:35Very gently, yeah.
14:39It sort of reveals itself.
14:41That is the random effect you get from the crystals.
14:44And these look like ferns here, look at that.
14:47It is a natural effect.
14:49Crystals form naturally, and it sort of nature did that.
14:52And then the last phase is we then paint a special type of paint over the top of the whole thing, and where the silver is, it'll shine through that paint.
14:59And this is the smallest cog in action, hey, teamwork, making the dreams work, yeah?
15:06It's quite artistic, this process.
15:16This is what I want us to do.
15:18Do that bit more, add value, do something clever and a bit special.
15:21I have no idea what they'll make of it, I really haven't, and they're coming tomorrow.
15:26I'll have to explain how we did it.
15:28That'll be interesting.
15:29Just got to be careful when we unveil it, and just put it there.
15:50As I watch everybody getting ready for the guys to arrive from Mack Motorcycle,
15:57I'm just beginning to wonder, have I overdone it?
16:00Because Ian and Ellis are, they're actually quite conservative in their outlook.
16:04They're not going crazy, they want to just set up a good, functioning little motorcycle company.
16:09And I've presented them with a variety of options, including a petrol tank painted using pig pee.
16:16Gentlemen, hello, how are you?
16:28We're in good shape, how about you?
16:29We've painted some tanks, we've got some different stuff to show you.
16:32Shall we just go and have a look?
16:33Let's go and have a look, right?
16:34Here we are.
16:35Are we going down?
16:38If you get to me, I'll put it there.
16:40Oh, my goodness.
16:41That's a selection.
16:42What's that?
16:43Yeah, that's why we've tried all sorts of stuff, just to see how they come out.
16:47Twin colour looks good, I think.
16:49It looks nice.
16:50So we've got another experimental one that we've dressed the bike up with.
16:53More?
16:54Yeah, I mean, you may not like it, you may like it, I don't know, but it's just worth trying.
16:58Oh, my goodness.
16:59Look at that.
17:00Put it in a different outfit and it's a different bike, isn't it?
17:03Do you know, I would never have thought that colour would have produced that effect.
17:07But there's one last thing, come and have a look at this, you'll have to come round,
17:11because we went a bit berserk.
17:13Wow.
17:14It's amazing, isn't it?
17:16I want this one.
17:18I'm just wondering, can we try it on the bike?
17:20We might all go...
17:21Have you not popped it up on the bike yet?
17:22No.
17:23Shall we try it on?
17:24Definitely.
17:25Oh, my goodness, look at that.
17:29God, that looks cool.
17:30That's completely changed it again.
17:33Cool.
17:34That does look reassuringly expensive.
17:37That is good.
17:38We can do more.
17:40This is the first time we've tried something that's really different, but it definitely works.
17:44So what we'd really like to do is take it somewhere where we can show it off.
17:48And where do you want to do it and when?
17:50It'd be really cool if we could do something like the TT.
17:53There's a lot of bikers there.
17:54It is the biggest motorcycle event in the world, isn't it?
17:58It's not a lad's trip.
17:59Well, we could make it a bit of a lad's trip.
18:00But I am...
18:01I'm totally up for that.
18:10No, I can't do that.
18:13Lewis?
18:14Uh-huh?
18:15I refuse to knock on your door because it wouldn't be right.
18:17Okay.
18:18So, quite exciting.
18:19Mac boys, they're thrilled.
18:20Happy day.
18:21And a really good idea has come out of it.
18:22Okay.
18:23We want to launch them at the Isle of Man TT.
18:26Wow.
18:27I mean, what better place?
18:28And that's where...
18:29God help us.
18:30You come in.
18:31Because it's an event.
18:32It's got to happen.
18:33Okay.
18:34I want people there.
18:35I want press there.
18:36Social media.
18:37How long have we got?
18:38Ah.
18:39Well, soon.
18:40But internet.
18:41That is your thing.
18:42Okay.
18:43Got this little mini in.
18:44Rear corner damage.
18:45Subframe isn't lining up anymore.
18:46Just in this corner.
18:47We can clearly see that we're probably at least 10 mil out.
18:50The best way to straighten it is obviously to strip it to a bare shell, put this car on a jig and they can reverse the impact.
18:54However, it's not concourse car.
18:55It's been raced through most of its life.
18:56And there's no point in spending thousands of pounds.
18:57So we're going to try and do an alternative way of kind of fixing it.
19:01Matt's hoping his improvised contraption will do the same thing.
19:02All right.
19:03The best way to straighten it is obviously to strip it to a bare shell.
19:05Put this car on a jig and they can reverse the impact.
19:09However, it's not concourse car.
19:12It's been raced through most of its life.
19:15And there's no point in spending thousands of pounds.
19:18So we're going to try and do an alternative way of kind of fixing it.
19:22Matt's hoping his improvised contraption will do the same thing.
19:57Oh, yeah.
19:59Right.
20:01So, after looking at it earlier, so it's got to be 8mm further.
20:06It might look a bit odd measuring Mark's Mini,
20:10but actually it's really important because of the way a Mini is built.
20:14Up until the Mini arrived, most cars had been built with, like, a separate chassis
20:19and then the body bolted onto that, whatever body you want, so the two were separate.
20:23The Mini was groundbreaking because it's a very early monocoque car.
20:27That means there is no separate chassis. The body kind of is the chassis.
20:31It relies on its shape for its strength.
20:34OK, ready?
20:35Yeah.
20:36Let's go.
20:37I don't normally get nervous, but I'm quite nervous.
20:46Are we moving?
20:47Yeah, let's move in.
20:48How much?
20:49You've gone 3mm so far.
20:51It looks like it's pushing the back quite squarely.
20:54I can see it moving the arch.
20:56And it's straightened this kink out from the outside.
20:59That kink's virtually gone now.
21:01You're 0.8 now, so you've gone 6mm.
21:056mm.
21:06That's getting pretty tight now.
21:08That's pretty good.
21:09Yeah.
21:10Look at that.
21:13Oh, yeah?
21:14Yeah, we've got 7mm, haven't we?
21:15Yeah.
21:16What do you reckon?
21:17I'm quite husky with that.
21:18That's about right.
21:19That's bang on.
21:20Yeah, I think we're quite good there.
21:22That's straightened up.
21:23I'm really happy with that.
21:25Like, super happy.
21:26It's actually paid off.
21:28I'm quite relieved now.
21:29I need to relieve myself.
21:39So we're pulling this dent out.
21:41The plan is to put your claw on there,
21:43use the upright as a tensioner to pull.
21:46Kind of the method of straightening it out
21:49when you don't have a jig.
21:53Right, shall I get Richard to just hold the card
21:55just in case it slides on the sides?
21:57That wouldn't be a bad show.
21:59Richard Hammond off the TV.
22:02What?
22:03Can we use your assistance, please?
22:05Oh.
22:06I wonder when you'd ask.
22:07Right, this is primitive, isn't it?
22:09Yeah.
22:10This is Mark, the sound man.
22:11He loves this mini,
22:12and you've got it on the rack.
22:14You ready?
22:15Yep.
22:18Oh!
22:19Oh, it's moving.
22:20It is moving.
22:24Slowly, slowly.
22:27That is amazing, actually.
22:30You might have to give this a bit of a tap
22:32from the inside as well.
22:35The original logo for this company
22:37featured the legend classic car craft.
22:40Well, yeah.
22:41That is not bad, is it?
22:44That's come out, yeah.
22:45That's come out really nicely, to be fair.
22:47Well, I enjoyed that, chaps.
22:48Thank you very much.
22:49I'm going to try to forget I ever saw it.
22:52Good luck.
22:53Thank you.
22:54Thank you.
22:55Thank you.
22:56Bye.
23:04Zog, Les?
23:05Hey, old man.
23:06Richard sent me a message earlier about racing.
23:08Yeah.
23:09About that.
23:10He wants to go racing, but he doesn't want to cost the cog any money, time, so he's brought
23:15along Les and Zog to run this car, which probably not the people I'd pick.
23:22But you know the basics, Les.
23:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:24I've got an idea.
23:25So, what tire pressure is he going to be running?
23:27About 30.
23:29Basically, when he goes out, you set him about 27.
23:31Yeah.
23:32When he comes back in, they should be running about 30.
23:34Hot.
23:35Yeah, okay.
23:36And then if it's wet, have we got slicks?
23:38No.
23:39This is all we've got.
23:40We've got no spare.
23:41Anything else?
23:42I mean, Richard did mention it overheats quite a bit.
23:45We got to a point where it wasn't too bad.
23:47If it does overheat, that's a Richard issue.
23:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:50He's got gauges in there that tell him if it's overheating, so he can back off and treat it.
23:53Well, it slashes in there.
23:55Yeah.
23:56But the biggest thing you've got to remember, yeah, this is for Richard's safety more than anything.
24:00Right.
24:01Okay?
24:02See the fire extinguisher?
24:03Yeah, yeah.
24:04That pin has to be out every time he goes out.
24:05Right.
24:06Okay.
24:07Because if he has an accident and he catches fire, this time he's got an extinguisher.
24:10I'm not sure what they know about racing, so I'm a bit worried, because at the end of the day, that's my Doris and I don't want it getting hurt.
24:18The main thing is, have fun, enjoy it.
24:21Will do.
24:22And bring my Doris back in one piece.
24:24Why are you calling it Doris?
24:25His name was actually Doris Day, because it'd only last a day.
24:29That's a belting answer.
24:31But no, have great fun, all right?
24:32Good to see you.
24:33Thanks for your time.
24:34I don't think I would have been Richard's first choice for race mechanic, to be fair.
24:39So he's obviously running out of friends.
24:41Lewis.
24:42Zob Ziegler.
24:43How are you?
24:44Do you like a biscuit?
24:45You don't keep this triangle at all by eating biscuits in the middle of the day.
24:48I mean, okay.
24:49So you're off to Silverson.
24:50Yes, and I'm going to do your job.
24:51Do you use social media?
24:55Um, I do have Instagram because I never make it work.
24:56I put Instagram on and then I get a film that I've never got that on there.
24:57Okay, so you have social media.
24:58We've gone into search, the smallest cock.
24:59Click on that.
25:00Boom!
25:01And that takes us to your page.
25:02Oh, this is a nightmare, mate.
25:03Donald Trump won't just pop up like he often does.
25:04Well, he will do, yes, because that's who you follow.
25:05Does he follow me?
25:06I don't think he's following you, but you do follow him.
25:07I hope he doesn't.
25:08All right.
25:09So all you need to do is explain what's happening with the day.
25:10Oh, I don't, I don't.
25:11I don't.
25:12I don't.
25:13I don't.
25:14I don't.
25:15I'm going to do your job.
25:16Do you use social media?
25:17I do have Instagram because I never make it work.
25:18I put Instagram on and then I get a film that I've never got that on there.
25:19Okay, so you have social media.
25:20If we've gone into search, the smallest cock.
25:21Click on that.
25:22Boom!
25:23And that takes us to your page.
25:24Oh, this is a nightmare, mate.
25:25Who do you follow?
25:26Does he follow me?
25:27I don't think he's following you, but you do follow him.
25:29I hope he doesn't.
25:30All right.
25:31So all you need to do is explain what's happening with the day.
25:32Oh, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't, I have to turn it round, don't I?
25:35There's something you can do to get me on.
25:37Do you know how to use a camera on your phone?
25:39I used to have a brownie box.
25:41This is going to be a nightmare.
25:42It is.
25:43I warned you.
25:46I will probably ask some people to help.
25:48I'll find someone much, much younger.
25:50Because the danger then is they think that, you know,
25:52what's this old man talking to me for?
25:54Smells of piss and cabbage.
25:57That's what all people smell like, apparently.
25:59Yep.
26:00I have zero hope.
26:13It's race day.
26:14And all I've got to do is finish today's race.
26:17And I'll be just one step closer to competing in the Motorsport Big Dog League.
26:22To get me over the line, I'll be relying heavily on my stand-in support team.
26:27Les and Zog.
26:29It's only, well, half past seven in the morning, for God's sake.
26:32It's not normal.
26:34As well as boosting team morale, Zog's on social media duty.
26:39And I'm Zog.
26:40I'm director of public...
26:42My hair's a mess.
26:43I'm director of public relations normally.
26:46But I've been called in to do the social media things.
26:50You're also helping me with mechanics.
26:52Oh, good luck with that, mate.
26:53And that ends the first part of social media.
26:57Look at you. Don't you look good, man?
26:59Slightly windswept.
27:00Winswept and interesting.
27:01And Les is holding the machinery.
27:04You were born to it.
27:06You were absolutely born to it, Zog.
27:08Now we just need to upload, don't we?
27:10Right, that's brilliant.
27:11That's our first bit of social media.
27:13Cheers, Les.
27:14Couldn't do with that.
27:16Right, chaps.
27:17Now, the mission lets us not lose sight of it.
27:19Yes.
27:20The whole point of this exercise gets signatures on my licence
27:22so I can race at the next level.
27:23OK, let's get it warmed up, then.
27:24Let's get it warmed up, then.
27:25Get it warmed up.
27:31I have to say, this coming racing with a sort of stripped-out crew
27:33with no real engineers, just those two idiots, I'm loving it.
27:37It's supposed to be just having a day out with your mates.
27:39I couldn't find any. I bought those two.
27:41I've never been a mechanic. I've been to lots of motor races.
27:44But you can fiddle, you can.
27:45Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I can fiddle.
27:46I don't know what the devil I'm doing today, but I'm happy,
27:48so it doesn't matter.
27:52This is our racer.
27:53Hello.
27:54I'm happy to go in his wrong pursuit.
27:55Dinky little booties.
28:04Right, little MGB.
28:05Let's both get through today.
28:07Victory will be getting the signatures on my licence
28:10that I need to move up a level.
28:12That's all I've got to do.
28:24So it's going to be one more lap to the start line. We form up in grid order.
28:29We've got our numbers ready, so we know our stuff, mate.
28:39Red lights are on. Handbrake is off.
28:42What the ****.
28:43I think my clutch is on the way out. I had a bad start. Just get it round. Remember, it's all you're after doing.
28:57Here he is!
28:58Here he is!
28:59He's in the game.
29:00It would be nice to get past this other MGB.
29:08I did.
29:09Second from last.
29:11Ah, Mini. I reckon I could probably get that.
29:16Yep.
29:17I'm through.
29:18He's made another place. Marvellous.
29:22This could be risky. If he runs wide, I'm going to go inside him.
29:29One of us is going to have to concede.
29:35And it's him.
29:38Wait a minute. Richard, do not overdrive yourself and break the car.
29:43I'm just trying to complete the race.
29:48Oh, shit. I'm getting hot.
29:53Oh, God.
29:57It's flashing red now.
29:59It's gone over 100.
30:01I think I am just going to back right off.
30:04It doesn't look very fast.
30:07Oh, it's starting to smell hot now.
30:09I'm going to kill the car.
30:12You're working yourself into a lava, Les.
30:14This is stressful, Zock.
30:16I know. I can see.
30:18Six minutes.
30:19So that's like four laps.
30:22Please.
30:23Please make it.
30:25Oh, this is agony.
30:27One more lap.
30:29One more lap after this.
30:31And I'll have done it.
30:33That's what we like.
30:34I've done it. I've done it. I've done it.
30:47Thank God.
30:48Yay.
30:50Never has last place been celebrated so fine.
30:53Next stop.
30:54Gin.
30:55Wow.
31:01Gentlemen, thank you.
31:02Ha-ha.
31:03My race team.
31:05Well done.
31:06What a race team.
31:07It was really hard not to get carried away and blow the car up.
31:10But if I hadn't finished it, I wouldn't get the signature I needed.
31:14So, okay, I nursed it.
31:16And I had a great time.
31:17I just want to do more.
31:18All right.
31:20Zog.
31:21Yes?
31:22One of the pit boards that you and Les put out said cog pint.
31:25Yes.
31:26Yes.
31:27Can we do that bit?
31:28Yes, please.
31:29Right.
31:30We'll pick this up later.
31:31Enough of mechanical sympathy sodding.
31:32Thought you'd never ask.
31:34Customer coming in.
31:37Mark.
31:38My sound man I've worked with for about 25 years to get his racing mini, and he's already
31:52here.
31:54Hello, mate.
31:55Hello, hello.
31:56How is it?
31:57I'd like to see customer working on their own car.
31:58That's good.
31:59It's good, doesn't it?
32:00It looks fantastic.
32:01Are you happy?
32:02Yes, I'm very happy.
32:03Lo que estoy muy emocionado sobre es que intentó la suspensión de la suspensión
32:06después de la cruz y no lo hacía.
32:08Y ahora...
32:09¡No, no!
32:29¡No, no!
32:31¡Como testigo!
32:31Can we just be quite clear until I get a lot better?
32:34There is no way am I going up against you on a track
32:36Because you've done this a lot and it would be annoying
32:38I've done it a bit
32:39I'll be very rude if you overtake me
32:41I can accidentally...
32:43Oh no, I know where to get it fixed
32:45You could take out an entire field of race cars
32:48And then bring it back
32:49And have six months worth of work
32:50They've done a really nice job of it
32:54And they've treated it with love and care
32:56Which is the important thing
32:57You know, it's a really special car to me
32:58I've known it a very long time
33:00So I'm really pleased with what they've done
33:01Today we are packing
33:17Ready to go to the TT
33:19And in 39 years of motorcycle riding
33:23That's something I've never done
33:25I've never made it to
33:26Possibly the most famous motorcycle race
33:28And we're the longest running in the world
33:30But we're not all going as tourists
33:32This is work
33:33We've arranged a little bit of a launch event
33:36For Mack motorcycles
33:37But obviously I'm packing my bike kit
33:40Because you can't ride the TT and not ride the bike
33:43The plan is to cross to the Isle of Man by sea
33:49After meeting Ian and Ellis at the port
33:52Jamie, a lot of bikes
34:05Hell of a lot of bikes
34:06Yeah
34:06These are our people
34:07Gentlemen, good morning
34:14You managed to navigate your way north
34:15We did
34:16I am very excited about this whole mission
34:19I didn't think I'd be this many people, to be honest
34:26Obviously it's big
34:27But it's absolutely crazy
34:28Let's check in
34:30And let the fun and serious work
34:33Launching your new brand
34:34Begin
34:35Shift right, thanks
34:39To the right
34:40This is pretty cool
34:45That's a lot of bikes
34:50And I love being around bikes and bikers
34:53So I'm having a great day
34:54Right, so we are at sea for a little while now
35:07I think we've organised everything
35:09But let's just go through it
35:11So it's at the Paramount City Cafe
35:13We've got the bikes
35:15Journalists have been invited
35:16We'll get awareness of the brands
35:18Awareness of your bikes
35:19And have fun
35:20Yeah, there's a bit of social bit to do
35:22To just say we're on our way
35:24Please come down to Paradise Cafe
35:26I won't say that
35:27Because it's the wrong place
35:28It's Paramount
35:29Come to Paradise
35:30Come to Paradise
35:31That's all you need to say
35:33I really hope Lewis' social media expertise
35:38Outweighs his attention to detail
35:39A lot is riding on this
35:41See what I did?
35:42Go on then
35:43Right
35:43I'm on my way to the legendary TT motorcycle race
35:47But it's not just the racing to be excited about
35:50There is a launch
35:51What's amazing is there's thousands of bikes below deck
35:57But everyone's looking at my work
35:59Saying how good the paint work is
36:01It just makes you proud
36:02To put my name to them bikes
36:05What makes the Isle of Man TT so famous
36:17Isn't just the fact that it's the oldest motorcycle race event in the world
36:21It's also the most dangerous
36:23With riders getting up to speeds of over 200 miles an hour
36:26On a track consisting entirely of public roads
36:30This is motorcycling's hallowed ground
36:34Nearly 40,000 bikers make the annual pilgrimage
36:38Can't believe we made it
36:50Looks a bit like Blackpool, doesn't it?
36:52We're officially launching the bikes tonight
36:57Getting the attention of these diehard biking aficionados won't be easy
37:02But Lewis assures me it's in hand
37:05I've had a look on the phone
37:08And we've hit just nearly 175,000 views
37:12On the little video that Hammond did on the ferry
37:14Spreading the word about our event this evening
37:16Now I was doing some schmoozing last night
37:23Right
37:23And the TT have said that we can lead the legacy lap
37:29So these four are going to lead the 1,000 motorbikes
37:33Around the full 37.5 mile track
37:36Really?
37:37Yeah
37:37Never
37:38That's quite a cool launch
37:39Just say that again
37:41We're going to be at the front
37:42We're going to be at the front showing off the bikes
37:44Cool
37:44I don't know the way
37:46I'm lucky I have done a lot of stuff
37:56I've never done this
37:57I mean you can actually feel the ground shaking
38:00That's mental, isn't it?
38:03I'm going to stall
38:04And then the whole thing
38:05Everyone on their side
38:08Sars
38:09Oh, movement is happening
38:11Literally we're off
38:12Oh, that is incredible
38:21Yes, man
38:22Sometimes the queue behind is 8 miles
38:25I know, it's nuts
38:26It's just forever
38:27Absolutely
38:28It's incredible
38:29Miles and miles of bikes
38:31Every possible height you can imagine
38:33Is this the circuit?
38:38This is the course
38:39Oh, yeah
38:40But it's stone walls
38:41And they pull like 100 and whatever along here
38:45An average of over 130 mile an hour
38:47It's insanity
38:48This mad hole covers
38:50Oh, my God
38:52That's tight
38:53Imagine that
38:54Oh, I've got it wrong
38:55I've hit a church
38:56They're actually waiting to cross the road
39:03Did I see the sign for 19 miles back there?
39:08Oh, I don't know
39:09Which means we're only halfway
39:11I need a wee already
39:12Me too
39:13So now we're going to go out up into the mountain
39:19Looks a bit misty up there
39:21It must feel suddenly very lonely when you're racing
39:24It's all busy
39:25And then suddenly big speeds coming up
39:27The Legacy Lap pays homage to the incredible bravery
39:38Of the riders who put their lives on the line
39:40To race at the TT
39:42I could get a little bit emotional about this
39:52I'm a biker
39:53I have been all my life
39:55And look at this
39:56We're coming down now to Balacrane
39:58Which is a really famous turn
40:00Wow
40:01Right now it's quite graceful and flowing
40:04What it must be like at race pace
40:06I cannot imagine
40:07I think we need to do more bikes at the smallest cog
40:14It's a fact
40:15So the lads are on their way down from the circuit
40:23We're here at the Paramount City Café
40:25And here they come
40:26I can see Jamie's flashing beacons leading the pack
40:29It's like the red arrows
40:31How's it feel having your bike running up and down at the TT then?
40:41This is the most extraordinary sensation
40:43It really is
40:44It's cool isn't it?
40:4436 or whatever years ago
40:46Working in your dad's antique pine place
40:48To here
40:49I'm speechless
40:50Absolutely speechless
40:52Respect duly paid
41:01Time for business
41:03We all look lovely
41:05We're fresh and ready
41:06But what's the plan of action?
41:08You've got a plan for
41:09If we get five
41:10Or 50 people
41:12Yes we do
41:12Yeah yeah
41:13The power of social media
41:14Something tells me it's going to be quite busy
41:16Feeling good
41:21All my paint works on display
41:23Which is really nice for the guys to see
41:25Bike's looking amazing
41:27There's a lot of people coming in now
41:29They're actually stopping people at the door
41:31So it's getting really really busy
41:32So it's quite good
41:33Lewis
41:34Try not to run over any of the attendees
41:37With the bike they've come to see launched
41:38It's an amazing turn up
41:40I can't believe there are people queuing outside
41:42Standing room only
41:43Why don't we hide
41:44Ladies and gentlemen
41:47Welcome to the Paramount City Coffee House
41:48For the official launch
41:50Of Mack Motorcycles
41:51That's for coming
41:52Thank you
41:53This is their launch
41:57And I want it to work for them
41:58Because he's an old mate
41:59Also for the smallest cog
42:00Let's be honest
42:01We're all here
42:03Because I'm guessing
42:04We all love bikes
42:05But few of us love bikes
42:07Enough to set up our own mark
42:09But there are two guys here
42:11Who did
42:12This is great
42:13I mean
42:13This is great for our socials
42:15I mean
42:15Videos are just going to pop off online
42:18Setting up any kind of mark
42:20Sounds like utter insanity
42:22Such a reaction
42:23A couple of hundred people here
42:24Probably more
42:25Everyone giving us great compliments
42:27About the bike
42:28Thank you so much
42:29For coming along to see us
42:30Enjoy the rest of the races
42:31And that's for coming
42:32Thank you
42:33How did that go?
42:36Just a massively positive reaction
42:38To the bike
42:38Really?
42:38Yeah
42:38To the paintwork
42:40The style
42:40People loved it
42:41Pretty spectacular
42:43What you've done
42:43Yeah, yeah
42:44We could literally paint
42:45Any colour we wanted
42:46Do whatever designs we wanted
42:47Out of this
42:49I think we're going to get
42:51A lot more work
42:52So tell us about this bike then
42:53So this one
42:54Is set up as a cafe racer
42:56I think seeing people
42:58Love the bike
42:59Say how different it is
43:01We never thought
43:02That it would be this good
43:03People are looking at the bikes
43:05And really it's down to those two now
43:07It's their business
43:08It's their creation
43:09And also
43:11You know how fabulous the paintwork is
43:12Obviously
43:13Because if you're a specialist
43:14In painting vehicles
43:15And you get to design the look of
43:17A brand new vehicle
43:18That's kind of cool
43:19Yeah
43:20And the better they do
43:20The better the smallest cog does
43:21It's kind of a win-win-win
43:23Right
43:24Time to inspect the newbies
43:27Chaps
43:27You're starting on the condor, yeah?
43:30I assume there's a comprehensive workshop manual
43:32No, there is nothing
43:32This is the vet
43:34Come to tell me if my old pet's adding
43:35We're down to three mil on the bottom
43:37Where's it gone?
43:38Just wore away
43:39I have to do a day's marshalling
43:41I'm on the flag
43:42So you go that side
43:43I want you to do the flag
43:44I have control of the situation
43:47And I can keep it up as long as I need to
43:48Really?
43:49I can keep it up as long as I need to
