00:00Hi there, welcome to Getaway. This week on the show, we are visiting Tassie's beautiful Bay of Fires.
00:18With its crystal clear waters, light sandy beaches and breathtaking scenery.
00:25How about a little Vanuatu island escape?
00:28Only a few minutes from the heart of town and a five-minute boat trip to paradise.
00:33But first up, everybody loves Kung Fu fighting in Hong Kong.
00:50As a shopping and foodie destination, Hong Kong ticks all of the boxes.
00:53But for movie buffs like myself, it holds a special place in our hearts for some very famous exports.
00:59And none more so than the very legendary Bruce Lee.
01:06This Hong Kong hero left behind an unrivalled legacy in the world of martial arts and action movies.
01:11And this city is bound to bring out Yen, a Kung Fu superstar.
01:16No, no, no, no. Cut, guys. Cut, cut, cut.
01:20As well as the statue honouring Bruce Lee's significance among Hong Kong heroes, there's an entire exhibit devoted to him at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
01:28Bruce Lee's legend status extends right around the world.
01:34And this exhibit looks at him not just as the movie star and martial artist, but as the cultural icon that he is.
01:42Titled A Man Beyond the Ordinary, the exhibit showcases memorabilia from throughout Bruce Lee's life.
01:48Bruce Lee is a name that's known around the whole world.
01:54Would you say that he's a bit of a hero here in Hong Kong?
01:57Yes, he definitely is a hero, both in Hong Kong and also in the martial arts of the world.
02:04Because he developed his Kung Fu philosophy in Hong Kong.
02:09Hong Kong as a point of the East, East, West.
02:13And also a place showing the cultural diversity.
02:16Part of the tour includes meeting a master to really appreciate the inner workings of this ancient pastime.
02:29And I am pretty keen to get amongst it.
02:34Wing Chun, you use middle punch.
02:39Pump, pump, pump, pump, like that.
02:41You punch in a short distance.
02:43Right.
02:46And we punch in a middle line.
02:48We don't use hope.
02:49Oh, right, right.
02:54Wing Chun is a form of Kung Fu, which has Bruce Lee as one of its most famous students.
03:00Wing Chun is a very interesting Kung Fu.
03:03Compared to the other style, it's exactly a different thing, you know.
03:07Usually the other style like this, big movement.
03:10Right.
03:11Wing Chun, very quiet.
03:14It's just like this.
03:15Especially when you use it in the elevator and the staircase, it works very well.
03:20Because we don't need much space to express our technique.
03:26You took me down about 30 times from there.
03:30Ah!
03:30Master Lau has been practicing and teaching this ancient art of fighting for most of his life.
03:35And I'm going.
03:36And I'm done.
03:37I do have a student, 81, but it's taller than me.
03:42Wow!
03:52All right, it's a draw.
03:53It's a draw.
03:54It's a draw.
03:55You both win.
03:55You both win.
03:59Wow.
03:59Like so many people, the extent of my Kung Fu knowledge has been massively based around
04:07what I see on the big screen, but learning about its history and its origins from someone
04:12like Master Lau has just been, it's been the most incredible experience.
04:16After spending the morning working up a sweat, I'm checking into one of Hong Kong's finest hotels
04:36for an afternoon of relaxation and indulgence.
04:41If first impressions are anything to go by, this is a very impressive start.
04:46From the moment you enter this hotel, you just know you're in for something special.
04:55The Grand Hyatt is as grand as the name suggests, with 11 restaurants and bars, a fully equipped
05:01spa and a super inviting pool area.
05:06Of the hotel's 500-plus indulgent guest suites, many of them offer spectacular views over Hong
05:14Kong's famous Victoria Harbour.
05:21Coming up next, catching up with the locals on the Capricorn Coast.
05:25So you can come in here and get this close to these beautiful little monkeys.
05:31Where'd you go?
05:36Where'd you go?
05:36Oh, wow.
05:41Now, I don't know about you, but any wildlife experience that you can get this close and
05:45live to tell the tale is pretty cool.
05:47And up here at Coobery Park Wildlife Sanctuary, it is all about guests having a hands-on experience.
05:54So you can come in here and get this close to these beautiful little monkeys.
05:59Where'd you go?
06:00Where'd you go?
06:00Oh, wow.
06:06I'm just north of Yippoon on Queensland's Capricorn Coast.
06:10And of course, the area is famous for the stunning Southern Great Barrier Reef.
06:15But it also has a wilder side.
06:20Coobery Park Wildlife Sanctuary is home to more than 300 animals across its 10 hectares.
06:27The next two birds that we have are the blue and gold macaw.
06:30We have a pilot and general.
06:31Kieran and his family own the park, which has been a favourite in the area for over 50 years.
06:38I love what you've done here because it's all, a lot of it's free range.
06:41It is, exactly right.
06:42So a lot of it is free range.
06:43You're able to interact with all the different kangaroos, emus, wallabies, all the chickens
06:47and ducks and peacocks.
06:48And there's no cages.
06:49They're able to go anywhere they want to go.
06:50So the visitors are entering their domain.
06:52The walk-through area here is fantastic.
06:56But there's also over 10 animal encounters you can take part in.
07:01From patting a python to cuddling a koala.
07:04Yeah, that's better.
07:06From the very cute to the terrifying.
07:10Right next door is the Capricorn Dinosaur Park and Mini Golf Yippoon,
07:15which is definitely a challenge on a few fronts.
07:22Good luck girls, you're not getting it through.
07:28Huge dinosaurs tower over the course, taking the whole experience back a few million years.
07:34I remember putt-putt as a kid, where it's just some dodgy surface and a plastic cup ready to catch the ball.
07:40But these guys have taken it to a whole different level.
07:44And with this hole, all you've got to do is hit it up the slope, off the backboard, round the corner there.
07:49It comes down through the chicane, comes into the bottom section here and into the hole.
07:57One of the major drawcards of this area is the Byfield National Park,
08:02made up of over 15,000 hectares of native forest.
08:07It's a favourite for four-wheel drivers.
08:09Plus, walking tracks have been set up to give you really easy access to some of the most unique areas.
08:15This here is one of the gems of this area.
08:26It's called the Byfield Fern, and it's not found anywhere else on earth.
08:32That is just incredible.
08:33She's like one of the superstars of the area.
08:35For somewhere to stay, just a stone's throw from the National Park, is Castle Rock Farm.
08:45John, you must be the most relaxed man in Queensland on this property, mate.
08:49Yeah, it is.
08:50It's a great place to live.
08:52We've got 115 acres of just, you know, natural bushland, 30 minutes from the beach.
08:58The people that we actually purchased off, they were Norwegian, and they planted all just this amazing array of fruit trees and flowering trees,
09:07which we'd give to our guests.
09:08So we let our guests basically walk around the farm, pick what they want for breakfast, grapefruit, oranges, avocados.
09:15There's always something that they can pick and take home and eat, you know, while they're here.
09:20Your stay here is simple, but I guess that's kind of the point.
09:24This whole area of Byfield is about getting back to nature, taking in the fresh air, and just enjoying this beautiful part of Queensland.
09:54After the break, I check out one of Tasmania's most beautiful hidden gems.
10:15This is one of Tasmania's hidden gems, Binalong Bay, with its crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, and breathtaking scenery.
10:37It is no wonder this coastal town has become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
10:43But there's more to Binalong Bay than just its stunning scenery.
10:49This small town boasts a rich history, from its indigenous roots to its thriving fishing industry.
10:57And lucky for us, some super trendy accommodation too.
11:03Binalong Bay sits at the southern end of the Bay of Fires on the east coast of Tassie.
11:08Just five minutes away is the Bay of Fires bush retreat, offering eco-glamping at its finest.
11:18Oh, Anna, I'm instantly feeling relaxed here at the retreat.
11:21So that is exactly how we want people to feel when they get here.
11:24I guess the inspiration was really a combination of what we really enjoyed about our own travel experiences.
11:30Being in nature and camping, and to just blend that, I guess, with amazing food, wine, really luxurious elements to create this experience.
11:38What's your favourite place at the retreat?
11:42I'd have to say the veggie garden.
11:43Oh.
11:44Yeah, so we've got a beautiful garden which has lots of local produce.
11:49And what a thriving veggie garden it is, humming with native bumblebees and lined with rows of vegetables and herbs like kale and rosemary.
11:58This is a huge veggie patch for yourself.
12:01Oh, it is, isn't it?
12:02So the veggie patch is not just for me, it's for the guests to use as well.
12:05Oh, so they can come in here any time?
12:07Yeah, so if they want to have a gin at night time, they can come and grab a cucumber and some fresh mint.
12:12Oh, that smells so good.
12:13Yeah, come and smell this sage.
12:15This is amazing.
12:19Oh, that's beautiful.
12:20This is a really great experience as part of the retreat because you can get your hands dirty if you don't have a veggie patch at home.
12:25Oh, they can come and do some weeding as well.
12:27Oh, yeah, I'm sure you'll love that.
12:28Can we go cook this up now?
12:30We sure can.
12:30All guests have access to the amenities block where you'll find a fully equipped gourmet kitchen ready to cook up a feast.
12:41Don't even worry about bringing your snacks to the retreat.
12:45Tom and Anna have set up an honesty system here in the bar and kitchen, so you can grab some of Tassie's finest local produce, beer, wine, olives, anything you can think of, and just pay for it in the morning.
12:56I love that, but I'm lucky that I've got Tom here to serve me up something fresh from the garden.
13:02Today I'm going to give you one of my favourites, Coal River Brie.
13:06Oh, this looks good.
13:07It is a fantastic cheese, especially once it warms up to room temperature.
13:12Great.
13:12It's on point.
13:13Oh, nice.
13:14And this pesto's straight from the garden?
13:16Yes, that's the garden pesto from all the kale and spinach that you saw up there in Rocket.
13:21And I'm going to pour you one of my favourite beers today from a brewery in Launceston.
13:25Oh, well, cheers to that.
13:27Thank you so much for this.
13:27Yeah, I hope you enjoy.
13:30Oh, that's crisp.
13:32Love it.
13:33It'll go really nicely with that cheese.
13:35Along with the huge selection of local produce and drinks, Anna and Tom also have homemade pre-prepared meals for guests, if that's more your style.
13:47And when you're ready to turn in for the night, you're in for a real treat.
13:50There are ten luxurious bell tents, each grand in size and comfort.
13:59Inside, you'll find a cosy reading nook for some R&R and your own hot water bottle for the colder months.
14:07The bathroom facilities are just as luxe as the tents.
14:11And I can guarantee it's the best night's sleep you'll have for a long time.
14:19This retreat is perfect for those that want to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in nature.
14:25But a little bit fancy.
14:26Coming up, Vanuatu's Love Island.
14:37Well, I can feel the love in here.
14:39This is so beautiful.
14:40Don't you love it when you take a holiday to an island that's known as a romantic getaway, but you're on your own?
15:04So you and I, we're going to have to enjoy Erecoa Island together.
15:07Erecoa is famous in Vanuatu for being the island of love.
15:11And even though it is a private island, you are still only a few minutes from the heart of town and a five-minute boat trip to paradise.
15:20Erecoa is a small, private island, just a coconut's throw from Vanuatu's main island of Afate,
15:28with really easy access to the town of Port Villa and to the airport.
15:34Hello, hello, hello.
15:37Thank you.
15:39Oh.
15:41Perfect.
15:42I have arrived.
15:43Now, once you arrive, everything is just a few little steps away from your water sports to white sandy beaches,
15:51the bungalows and the all-important cocktail bar,
15:55something that certainly wouldn't have been around in the 1800s when missionaries started arriving in Vanuatu
16:01and Erecoa was one of their first stops.
16:05Is this here, the missionaries' church?
16:08Was this the first church built in Vanuatu?
16:12Yes.
16:12A true open-air church now?
16:14Yeah.
16:15It used to be a building, but now it's an outdoor church.
16:19It looks beautiful.
16:20Do they still use the church today?
16:21Yes.
16:22We're not using it for church service, but we're using it for weddings.
16:26Do you think I could ring the bell?
16:27Sure.
16:27You've got to ring the bell?
16:28Sure.
16:34Sorry.
16:34Sorry.
16:35Sorry to the sound guy.
16:36Do you think the people who visit here love the fact that there is still a strong culture
16:48and that you can learn about it?
16:49It's not just an island paradise.
16:52Yeah, I think even though we're close to the city,
16:54but once you're on the boat and you're on the island, it's your island time.
16:57You're more relaxed.
16:59It's a slower way of life, isn't it?
17:02I just wanted to quickly show you what one of the rooms here was like
17:11because I know that when most of us dream about an island escape,
17:14that dream includes a white sandy beach
17:17and this room includes a step straight out onto it.
17:26I know that Errico is famous for being an island of love,
17:30but it's also really popular for families.
17:33And I don't know about you, but when I take my children on holidays,
17:36my favourite word, activity.
17:39I love activities.
17:40Hello, Kevin 007.
17:43Hey, what's up?
17:44Hey, what's up?
17:45Very well.
17:46Okay, so what are you making here?
17:48At the moment, we're making a cross-cut for the Melanesian fish tonight.
17:52Okay, so how do you do this?
17:53Um, what are you doing?
17:55Oh, right.
17:56Yes.
17:56You grab this.
17:57Yes.
17:58Um, you put this together and do that.
18:03Yep.
18:03You would do, put it like, um, that.
18:09Oh, what a fantastic chip.
18:12You did good.
18:13Okay, so now we cut that and I just wrap it around myself, do I?
18:15Yes.
18:16Okay.
18:16So now we're going to go to this is this.
18:17We're just going to cut this and you can put it on your waist.
18:19You wait.
18:20You wait till you see this tonight.
18:21All righty, loved-up couples, you can indulge in what they call the chef's selection bromance
18:30dinner here.
18:31Three courses with a bottle of vino or bubbly, all sets in this dreamy location.
18:36For a less intimate but equally memorable dining experience, the resort holds a Melanesian
18:45feast once a week.
18:47You have got to be there.
18:50How much do you love an island feast?
18:52I have been looking forward to this.
18:54All of it fresh, all of it local, all of it delicious.
18:59Either way, recognise the skirt.
19:02Told you I'd wear it in the end.
19:03Any local feast calls for kava and once the chief gives the nod, it is open for the guests
19:10to enjoy, for Endure.
19:12Woohoo!
19:13How long?
19:14What do you think?
19:15What do you think?
19:17Um, interesting.
19:22Many of the islands offer Melanesian feast nights, but I tell you what, Eiracorps really
19:29is something special.
19:33Thanks for travelling with us again this week.
19:38Next week, Tokyo's immersive art museum, Team Lab Planets.
19:42It's so interactive.
19:44You can touch it.
19:45Everything.
19:46Plus, the largest safari experience outside of Africa.
19:50Getting up close to lions, giraffe, cheetahs and even rhinos is something that you will never
19:55forget.
19:56See you then.
19:56Good night.
