Full of excitement, I returned to Proud Smile in Hope Island for the real-deal Invisalign activation with Dr. Erwin Vasconcelos. In this session, he bonded those discreet tooth-colored attachments onto my teeth with precision, then slid on my inaugural set of clear aligners. The initial feel? Like a firm hug from your orthodontist—tight and unfamiliar, but that's the magic starting to work on my malocclusion.

Dr. Erwin tweaked the attachments with a quick file for smoother handling and broke down the insertion technique: uppers get the thumb-finger squeeze from the molars forward; lowers require a gentle fingernail lift to pop them off. It's a learning curve, no doubt—clumsy at first, but the payoff of straighter teeth and better bite alignment keeps me hooked. Once home, I conquered my first independent insert. This moderate 19-week plan to expand my arches is rolling, and I'm geared up for the ride.

00:00Today is the day I'm finally going to be getting my Invisalign trays.
00:05So if you've been following my dental journey, you'll know it's been a bit of a journey to get this malocclusion fixed.
00:12But the benefits of getting your malocclusion fixed is fairly significant actually.
00:16And I learnt a new one last time I visited and that's it can even improve your breathing.
00:22So it can improve your bite obviously, it can improve your ability to clean your teeth.
00:27And it can also try and help prevent long-term damage like uneven wear and tear on your teeth, which I do have a lot of.
00:36And also hopefully prevent cracked teeth.
00:38So I'm going to go into Proud Smile to see Dr Irwin again.
00:43And today I'm actually going to be getting the trays that are going to now go into my mouth.
00:48And I imagine he's going to probably put these little adhesives on my teeth too, where the Invisalign trays are going to be sitting.
00:55So quick brush of teeth before I go, because after all, it is still visiting a dentist.
01:25So we have our trusty tool with us again.
01:44And I'm actually a bit nervous.
01:47Like, basically I think today is going to be the day I'm going to feel what these trays are going to be like actually in my mouth.
01:55I hope they're not too bulky.
02:00Hello.
02:01The whole family, yes.
02:04Come on, daddy.
02:05Well, I'm excited today.
02:09So I'm getting the, yes.
02:12Come on, here we go.
02:14Take a seat, please.
02:14Yes.
02:16Thank you so very much for this.
02:18I am, um, I am excited.
02:21I'm a bit nervous too, though.
02:23Whoa.
02:24Is that, is that my box or is that?
02:26No, that's my box.
02:27I thought that was a present for me.
02:30Come on.
02:31No, that's a good idea.
02:32You should start doing it.
02:33Yeah, I'm good.
02:34Anyway, I'm good at my box.
02:36Um, this is your plan, so today you're going to be gluing these things.
02:41Yes.
02:42They are tooth colored though, so it's not pink.
02:45And we're going to try tray number one and if I didn't kiss that tooth, it's okay.
02:51So the fact is it's not today, it's fairly simple.
02:53It's fairly simple.
02:54And then I'll give you probably five or six aligners between six weeks of treatment.
03:00Okay, yeah.
03:00And you just change yourself every week.
03:02And then they're different sizes each week.
03:04Different sizes.
03:04So each week it's a new increment of force to move the teeth.
03:10Okay.
03:11And then I'll come back and see you.
03:12Then you're going to head back and you're going to check if everything's progressing well.
03:15Yep.
03:16And then I'll give you more aligners at that time.
03:18All right.
03:19Okay.
03:19Let's do this.
03:20So make this a chance.
03:21Let's turn on this, right?
03:22Half off.
03:23Would that be nice?
03:23I don't know.
03:25I don't know.
03:26I think you can't find us.
03:27I know.
03:27I saw this with my head outside.
03:29That's quite funny.
03:30I saw this with my head outside.
03:30I saw this with my head outside.
03:31I saw this with my head outside.
03:32I saw this with my head outside.
03:33So every time you look in my mouth, if there's a massive bit of decay starting, can you alert
03:39me to that?
03:39Oh yeah, yeah.
03:40Definitely.
03:40I'm always nervous.
03:42I try and look after my teeth so well, but I'm always nervous when it's like a second
03:47year old.
03:47So this doesn't hurt at all.
03:59I'll give you some now.
03:59No.
04:00No needle, no bang, open.
04:04Oh, well that's unusual from my bedroom.
04:08Enjoy it all.
04:09Oh, I'm going to say enjoy the TV.
04:11You won't do anything.
04:12Let's play.
04:13Oh, it's great.
04:15Do you know what I love?
04:16I love Fire Fire Lime on Netflix.
04:19I love Fire Fire Lime on Netflix.
04:49Who changed this?
05:09Who changed this?
05:11I'm thinking that was it, that big thing.
05:27This is what you're going to do today.
05:30Pretty much this, but we're going to do a few.
05:33Not much, but some.
05:35Yeah.
06:05I'm going to do it with me.

09:35I'm going to get it for you.
09:47Okay.
09:49I thought I'd be on it.
09:53Okay, I'm going to get it.
09:57Bye!
09:59Oh, come on.
10:07Is it dissolving or something?
10:09It dissolving or something.
10:11Sometimes when you place in and take out,
10:15it can follow up.
10:19But the treatment can have to continue.
10:29Okay.
10:31Okay.
10:41What?
10:45Okay.
10:51Wow.
15:25Oh, I understand.
15:26At the moment, as you can see, the tray is to go in all of these things in one go.
15:32It's like flossing.
15:33It's hard to find it to floss.
15:35Oh, I understand.
15:36So to remove the tray, the tray is to go on the back cheek first.
15:42So you can use those two fingers.
15:44Yeah.
15:44So you go like there and pull it down.
15:50Oh, I know.
15:51And then you just like the other side and then you go to the front and start.
15:57I feel like I take a big pull out.
16:00I know.
16:01That's how I feel.
16:02Trust me, you will not.
16:03You know.
16:04You are right there to remove the tray.
16:04You have to remove the tray.
16:05You have to remove the tray.
16:06If it was easier to remove the tray, then it would be easier to go to the tray.
16:09I think it's a very good tray.
16:10Yeah.
16:11So to put it in, I think it's easier to go on this section first.
16:15If I really can't manage these, could they do an even looser tray to start, or is this
16:40the loss?
16:41After losing of the tray, it's just the tray being able to grab all of the two in one
16:46box.
16:47In one box.
16:48But when you try, the attachment of this lock makes it a bit hard.
16:50Yeah, I understand.
16:51Let me smooth off this attachment in here.
16:57Oh!
16:58Nice time.
17:11Nice.
17:12Nice.
17:12Yeah.
17:25I have a nice place that you have.
17:32Go!
17:33Go.
17:34
17:35That already felt good when it's a little bit easier.
17:54Yeah.
17:55And then the bottom, let's try the back taste better.
18:05So you have to be sure I can't hold my taste out.
18:11I am.
18:12Let me round up.
18:35So for the bottom, if you look in the mirror, that triangle on the right side of it.
18:42So you are lined up too.
18:44Try it.
18:45So.
18:46Wow.
18:47Wow.
18:48There it is.
18:49Yeah.
18:50Yellow.
18:51Yeah.
18:52Yellow.
18:53Yellow.
18:54Yeah.
18:58Yellow.
19:12so there will be a little bit of practicing yeah to make this happen so then every time
19:31you're going to need something your brush will need to remove them and put it back on
19:35yeah i can see why i can't fall in height yeah you can see it all right i might go
19:40on a liquid diet would that work can you drink a lot of protein shakes and stuff yeah you can drink
19:49most clean drinks with the tray in your mouth you just can't do uh very hot drinks because the heat
19:57obviously changes the plastic oh okay makes it more there is also a little tool that we're going to give
20:03it to you it's like a book and then you can um to make it easy to remove oh okay this is
20:12cheers and i'm going to grab them oh this is yours oh let's love a nice bag thank you
20:18i thought i was in that big box this is for you too after you put the tray on yep you're going to get
20:26a lot of protein and bite me that will then help sit the tray and push it against the teeth so
20:33it's important that the tray is covering to completely yeah and then this is a removal tool
20:42so you can use this thing on the edge of the tray and pull it down oh right sometimes it's hard to do it
20:49it's hard to do with your fingers it's like it's easy to do in front of the mirror as well yeah
21:01so you bring up the front of the mirror and then you try to hold the thing you can try with your
21:05fingers first because i do find myself i find it easy with the fingers for something like that
21:10okay but there'll be a check you'll be spending a few minutes doing what i understand so once you
21:18gotta deal with it it happens fairly quickly okay yep oh look thank you i am too excited to be
21:24starting with jerry so that one there is number one okay i'm going to give you six
21:30what about fillings though like um hopefully no fillings will come out no the only thing that comes
21:44out sometimes is the actual attachment that i place okay but that's if that turns out we'll just put
21:49anyone so that one is number one and then you're going to go through two three four five six oh right
21:55and then three four five six okay when you finish with them just put them back in the bags and save
22:10them for now oh okay because sometimes you could use a tray or something you need to go back instead
22:16yeah so yeah sure and then it comes with a little case once once i've finished with them though how do i
22:23just i just i've brushed them one last time you can brush everything you brush your teeth you can brush them
22:28brush them yeah okay and then there's a little case
22:37which is like that you need to put them inside oh when you go out yeah okay okay well thank you so much
22:46can i can i can just ask you where you're going to get to eat now yeah
22:51can you take them out yes i can just see myself
22:58and my daughter wants to get to
23:00somewhere and i'll be out there in the bathroom for like an hour trying to get them out yeah
23:04sorry sorry can you do it as i sit up and you want me to sit down
23:09that didn't even seem so bad that what the third time it came out
23:31um thank you sorry it'll be fine
23:40in there okay thank you because i think i'll um practicing putting them in will help me then take
23:47them out i think yeah excuse for sure yeah yeah okay oh yeah yeah because i think just taking them
23:54mail i might struggle yeah but if i put them in then i think you'll help me i'll smiley make friends
24:10with them today yeah this afternoon thank you very very much i really appreciate this look i'm excited to
24:19start with a beautiful little case thank you thank you yes if you have any and the chillies are on the
24:27side as well if you have any questions oh and the one though chillies chillies i love our biking
24:32oh yes yeah to my show yeah if you have any questions just call out our session they may be able to give
24:38some instructions if you're struggling with anything so yeah we'll be fine we'll be just fine thank you
24:44very much all right so we're going to walk you to come back then in six weeks six weeks i'll be here
24:50with already straighter teeth yes a little bit straighter i want to see you again i better get my son too
24:57thank you thank you thanks for your time um yes good they feel a bit like yeah well i do and i'm
25:08actually worried about putting them in and out first because they've got a mold around quite a few
25:13crooked teeth yeah yeah how did you go with just putting them in and then how do you go pulling them
25:27out if you are just getting nailed did you actually use the hook no i know i was wondering that i might
25:38just yeah he's one thing that's done yeah well that would make it easy and you can pull out any
25:45tape no you can't it feels like you are though i don't think that you'll do is that little buttons
25:52they might come up yeah yeah i wasn't on the button yeah yeah like yes sorry
26:00so it's going to be six weeks yeah six six
26:04well i have to admit that getting the um adhesives on was a little bit more intensive
26:11than i was expecting and he even adjusted the adhesive with a drill i did not think i was going
26:17to see a drill in on but i mean it wasn't on my teeth it was just on the adjustment and the trays do
26:22feel really tight on and it's going to take a bit of practice i can imagine putting them on and off
26:27but anyway i have well and cruelly started now so um i am excited it is going to take a little bit
26:34of an adjustment it's a bit of a new routine but um we've got this
26:41okay i am back from proud smile with my bag of goodies i have got the adhesives on my teeth i have
27:02to say that getting those put on was actually a little bit more traumatic than i expected i thought
27:07it was just going to be some little um sticker that they put on the side of your teeth but
27:11it was a little bit more intense than that like they put some sort of metal thing i think on my
27:16teeth as they put it on and and then um the dentist even drilled a little bit of the back um just to
27:23smooth it out a little bit so anyway in my bag i've also got gloves because i'm going to be wearing
27:29gloves i think when i put them in and out these are the um two things that i'll um that's why i've got
27:35the scissors i'm going to unwrap those this is my um this is already open so i've already got one
27:41set of trays this is for the next five weeks and they're all numbered um two three four five six
27:49sorry for the next six weeks they're all numbered so i've actually got seven weeks
27:54i know one two three four five six six weeks in total sorry so the first one has already been open
28:01in the dentals um in the in the dental chair dr erwin already put them in and out but here they are
28:10hi cookie and i have my toddler obviously so i better hurry um and here's the hook thing that they've
28:17given me to take them on and off so in here we have the um here we have my open ones that i am this is
28:31gonna this is the first time i am trying to put these on at home so i i'm to be honest i'm a bit nervous
28:38they're they're trickier well there they are that's lovely they're sort of like in a little heart
28:46alignment there um all right so here goes i'm going to unwrap these because these are when you pop the
28:55trays in you then bite down on these so that they like fit with this snug but i have to say this is
29:04a little bit nervy i don't know how complicated these are going to be they were even hard when dr
29:12firwin was putting them in so all right so and now of course to work out which is the top which is the bottom
29:27oops
29:34i think this is
29:50i think this is the top so let's have a go
30:04oh
30:18i think i'm going in
30:30i have to say this is a bit awful
30:42i actually think that's in
30:45that actually wasn't too bad i was expecting a bit more of a battle i also think that's in now for the
30:52bottom
30:53one hand dr erwin gave me is to start at the back on the side so that's what i'm kind of trying to do
31:15oh
31:15oh they're in now i have to say that wasn't actually quite as bad as i thought so
31:28yeah i think they're improperly and now what i'm going to do yeah okay so that wasn't quite as
31:36bad as i feared because as dr erwin was putting them putting them in he was really
31:42sort of fiddling around with them i think it's a bit like when the dentist flosses your teeth for
31:46you it's a lot more awkward but you kind of know your teeth better so it's a bit easier i think that's
31:51maybe the case within invisalign that that you do know your teeth so um well that's good news like
31:57hopefully for anyone else getting invisalign it may not be quite as bad putting the trays in when
32:02you get home as you fear i thought it was going to be really bad that wasn't too bad now i'm gonna bite
32:07down on these okay okay so biting down on these really pushes them in like really firmly so
32:28i mean it's not too bad there is a bit of pressure it you do feel pressure and obviously
32:33speaking you'll speak with a bit of a lisp at first until you get used to it and your your
32:40tongue gets used to where it's gonna go hi love all right mommy will come out i've got my new
32:46invisalign's in so okay it wasn't too bad so anyway this is going to be my new routine um i wear them all
32:55the time basically except when i'm eating and then um i brush them just with toothpaste and a toothbrush
33:01it when i whenever i brush my main teeth so there you go not too bad getting them in
