00:00You want to find out how the Niners are 6-3?
00:02I would love to.
00:03Would you like to?
00:04Can we?
00:04Can we move on?
00:05Let's do it.
00:06All right.
00:08We've all asked that question.
00:10How the hell are the Niners 6-3?
00:12And then my partner over here, he went and found out.
00:15Yeah.
00:15So go ahead.
00:16Tell us how they're 6-3.
00:18Well, I pinpointed it.
00:19And as you know, Mark, and for those of you in the audience on YouTube, you can see I've got right now nine pieces of paper in front of me.
00:26I look at every game, not once, not twice, but thrice.
00:29And I've highlighted ten plays that would tell you why the 49ers are, in fact, 6-3.
00:36And we go back to week one against Seattle, and it happened in an inexplicable way in the fourth quarter with Brock Purdy throwing to who?
00:46He's swinged out into the end zone.
00:48Wasn't open.
00:49Purdy keeping it alive.
00:51Brock Purdy.
00:53Lops one.
00:54It is Tungent's touchdown, San Francisco.
01:00Jake Tungent's, who had never caught a pass in the NFL, has caught three today, including the go-ahead touchdown with a minute and 34 left.
01:11Wow.
01:12That's courtesy Fox.
01:15Dude, that says it all, right?
01:16When he first said Tungent's, I thought it was like a verb.
01:21Like, I mean, he was just like...
01:23Who are you?
01:24He throws it, and it's Tungent's, as if it, like, had caught a disease as it was flying through the air.
01:29Oh, damn it.
01:30The thing caught Tungent's as it was going through the air.
01:33But it was a person, not a person that I knew, but we know him now, and the Niners had the lead.
01:39They had the lead, but it wasn't over.
01:41Jackson Smith in Jigba for 11.
01:44Stout with a nice pass breakup, but JSN goes for 41 over Renardo Green.
01:50Hello, Seattle, you're in the red zone.
01:53Second and four at the eight.
01:55Oh, no.
01:56Seattle's going to...
01:56They're going to find a way to win this game, aren't they?
01:58Kubiak, first game is the O.C. here.
02:02Sends in a call for second and four.
02:04Darnold.
02:05Hit as he let it go.
02:07The ball is loose.
02:08The 49ers have it.
02:11It's Bosa.
02:14Nick Bosa and the 49ers closing the door on the Seahawks.
02:20No, not Darnold.
02:23Right?
02:23That's a four.
02:24Sorry, I know you're...
02:25No, come on.
02:26No.
02:27No, you nailed it.
02:27Uh, remember him?
02:29Nick Bosa?
02:30I do.
02:30He used to play for the Niners.
02:31Sack, fumble, recovery, shrug, game over, Niners win.
02:37But those are the two plays that got them to 1-0 mark in week one.
02:41Yeah, no doubt about it.
02:42And I had somebody who literally works for the San Francisco 49ers say to me four days later
02:52over coffee, we had no business winning that game.
02:57No business winning that game.
03:00But they did.
03:01And that's part of how they've gotten to 6-3 because somehow they got to 1-0.
03:06Yeah, they got to 1-0.
03:08And then, unfortunately, in the next game, Brock out, Mack in, and you take on New Orleans,
03:13second straight road game.
03:14And they were kind of in a little bit of a scuffle until the fourth quarter.
03:18I was expecting nothing, Dibs.
03:20Yes, I was expecting Mack Jones to be good enough, and you got to the fourth quarter,
03:26and, well, he turned out to be good enough on this play.
03:30Yep, no doubt about that.
03:31As they find Jennings running free.
03:33Jawan Jennings going to take it in for a San Francisco touchdown.
03:3842 yards from Jones to Jennings for six.
03:48Yep, for six.
03:49And that put them up by 12, but nothing's that easy, Zaza Pachulia.
03:54Nothing easy.
03:56The Saints would score.
03:57The Niners punt.
03:58New Orleans punts.
03:59The Niners punt.
04:01And then New Orleans gets the ball back.
04:02And you know what, Mark?
04:03Only down by five.
04:04Right, with the ball, and they were creeping toward the 50, and then this happened.
04:10A first down, and the Saints hopes continue.
04:12Fourth and two.
04:13Pressure coming.
04:14Ball is out.
04:15Loose on the turf.
04:16Diving for it is Ruiz, but it will not matter.
04:21Turnover on downs, and the San Francisco 49ers are going to get a road win in New Orleans.
04:28You want to see an amazing pass rush, and it's not Nick Bosa.
04:34That has it.
04:34It's Bryce Huff.
04:37Bryce Huff, welcome to the team.
04:38Yeah.
04:39And you're bringing back good memories, because we watched that one with the whole fam up in Tahoe.
04:44We went up there to see a concert.
04:46We're at McP's.
04:47Y'all should check out.
04:48I'm not being paid for this.
04:49McP's is right there on the corner on State Line, right across the street from Harvey's and Harris.
04:55Man, this is one of the biggest sports bars.
04:57It's got like a thousand TVs in there, and good French fries.
05:01Go, Bryce Huff.
05:01That's awesome, and Bryce Huff coming back, so that's kind of a nice warm memory.
05:05The Niners get to 2-0, and then they take on Arizona, and as you would expect, divisional game, dogfight.
05:12Arizona scores late third, early fourth to tie the game, and you're thinking, oh boy, all right,
05:17this is the one that they're probably going to have to give up.
05:21And then, unfortunately, you had that hold.
05:24Dominic Bruni.
05:25Yes, the safety.
05:26That's when it fell over for the Niners.
05:283-15 to go.
05:30You're down 15-13.
05:31Calais Campbell.
05:32How old are you, bro?
05:34So, like, you're Al Horford's uncle, I think.
05:37He's still producing, though.
05:39Super old.
05:39So, all right, Arizona, all you have to do is get a first down, and you win.
05:43That'd be a bummer.
05:45And then, third and nine, you decide to throw it, and they threw it, and the Niners were up to it.
05:51They are going to throw it.
05:52Murray wants it all, and it is incomplete.
05:56Zane Jones could not hold on.
05:58And Upton Stout, the rookie, delivers the blow to force fourth down.
06:04I'll never forget Upton Stout.
06:05Courtesy Fox as well.
06:07Courtesy Fox.
06:07Upton Stout was one of the players where we got to hear the phone call when he was drafted.
06:14Now, I think half the players in the league do this, but it just stuck in my mind because it's proven to be true.
06:20He kept saying to John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan,
06:23Sir, you just got yourself a dog.
06:25You just got yourself a dog.
06:27And you know what?
06:27He's right.
06:28This kid is undersized.
06:30He's not always in the right place as a rookie, but he is a scrappy little player out there in the defensive backfield,
06:39and no play for him this year has been bigger than that one.
06:42That was huge.
06:43And then Arizona punts.
06:45It's a touchback.
06:46Niners get it at the 20.
06:47They work their way thanks to, in part, a CMC screen.
06:51They work it all the way down to the 16-yard line.
06:54And Eddie Panero.
06:56Eddie Panero.
06:57And you win 16-15.
07:00A loss against Jacksonville.
07:02You're 3-1, but there's brighter days ahead.
07:04And by the way, tip of the cap to Marvin Harrison Jr.
07:08You didn't make the list, but you should have, because you had two non-plays that helped the Niners win that game against the Cardinals.
07:17Dude, if you're going to come after Troy Franklin, I'm going to come after Marvin Harrison Jr.
07:22Dude, you dropped the ball.
07:25But we won't drop the ball.
07:27Well, we're going to remind you that you're listening.
07:29Time for the legal.
07:3095-7 the game.
07:32KGMZ FM and HC1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station in the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
07:36Always live on the free Odyssey app.
07:38Coming to you live from the Laughing Bunk Studios.
07:40Don't forget, this is a football Friday presented by Merit America.
07:44Visit them at meritamerica.org forward slash super.
07:48Now, back to my partner, Dan Dibbley.
07:50How the hell are the Niners 6-3?
07:52Well, we get you now to week five, where they were 3-1.
07:55It's a double-shart week.
07:56You're going to L.A., you're eight-and-a-half point dogs.
07:59Nobody thought that you could win the game, but pop, pop, you take the lead.
08:03You're up 14-0, and then things got a little bit sideways.
08:07L.A.'s pretty good, and then it came down to one big play on the goal line
08:12where L.A. was trying to seize control of the football game.
08:1667 seconds.
08:21Williams.
08:23Can he get in?
08:24They signal that he, with the ball coming out, goes the other way, and the call is a
08:35fumble to San Francisco ball.
08:38Wow.
08:41That is unbelievable.
08:44Al Michaels on Amazon with the passionate call.
08:48Take it easy.
08:49I love Al Michaels.
08:50See, you couldn't see a damn thing.
08:52It was a sea of humanity.
08:53Nor could any of us until people started diving.
08:56It was a Collins punch out at the goal line.
08:58Niners recover.
08:59Up three.
09:01Yeah.
09:01Niners win, right?
09:02I mean, for my money, play of the year.
09:04Certainly on defense.
09:05This was the play of the year.
09:07Alfred Collins, who not only punched that thing out at the one-inch line, he literally punched
09:13it out.
09:13He got a little bit of Kyron Williams' head also on his way for the ball.
09:18This was an unbelievable play.
09:20And the only reason we knew it was a fumble is because all the 49er players immediately
09:24started punching the other direction.
09:26He got the recovery, too, didn't he?
09:28Yes, he did.
09:29He got the punch in the fumble.
09:31Very nice play.
09:32Alfred Collins, rookie.
09:33Yeah.
09:33And the Niners are stuck at their own one.
09:36They ran it three timeouts by L.A.
09:38They punted.
09:39L.A. gets a field goal to force overtime.
09:41And the Niners get the toss.
09:42And they march down.
09:44And they use a lot of clock in overtime.
09:47And then good old Eddie Pinero.
09:49So reliable.
09:50There's no doubt this was going in.
09:53So here comes Pinero.
09:57This is going to be a 41-yard attack.
10:01He's made three of three tonight.
10:03And this one is off the upright and through.
10:07Oh, he points one for the lead.
10:10Oh, a game of inches.
10:13Thank you, Curb Herbstreit.
10:15Herbie.
10:15Getting in there on Amazon Prime.
10:18No better sound when it does still make its way through than boom.
10:22Totally.
10:25That's his worst kick of the year as far as the field goal is concerned.
10:28But it counts for three.
10:29But it went in.
10:30Back in the day, that's game over.
10:31But now it's Montessori football.
10:34Everybody needs to have a turn.
10:36You get a turn.
10:37And you get a turn.
10:38All right, L.A., you get a turn.
10:40They drive down to the 11-yard line.
10:42They kick a field goal.
10:43And it's tied.
10:45And we play more football.
10:46But wait.
10:46No, no, no.
10:47Sean McVegas, we're going to go for it, aren't we?
10:51On the ground.
10:52Does he make it?
10:53It doesn't look like he didn't have the ball.
10:55The ball is out.
10:55When did it come out?
10:57The 49ers think they have stopped him short.
11:00They're already on the field.
11:01They're already celebrating.
11:03And that could be Marquise Siegel, the rookie, who's involved in that one.
11:14And Stafford can only come to the sideline and go, I can't believe it.
11:19What an ending.
11:20What a job by so many different individuals, led by Kyle Shanahan.
11:25That, of course, was back, remember, way back when we thought Marquise Siegel was good.
11:30Yeah.
11:30That was a huge play for the 49er defense.
11:34And, again, you're bringing back good memories.
11:37We took this one in at Sam's Tavern right here in the Fideye.
11:41And the whole bar starts screaming, being egged on by the employees, by the way.
11:48Beat L.A.
11:50Beat L.A.
11:51The whole bar is going crazy.
11:52Nobody could believe that the Niners had just won that game.
11:56Yeah.
11:56And they get to 4-1 at that point.
11:59And you're starting to think, wow, they're doing it crazily.
12:02How are they 4-1?
12:03Well, how are they 6-3?
12:05We skip ahead.
12:06They go out and they lose the next game to Tampa.
12:08Fine, Tampa's really good.
12:10You're 4-2.
12:10Then you take on Atlanta.
12:12And many of us were thinking, okay, Niners, you're probably ready to regress to the mean.
12:18And yet, the Niners at 4-2, a couple of big plays in that second half, including this one.
12:25When Atlanta has the ball and Atlanta's threatening to take the lead, they go for it on 4-1.
12:31Throwing.
12:33Panics.
12:34Incomplete.
12:35Trying to get it to London.
12:44Chase Lucas playing the slot tonight for the injured Upton Stout.
12:49They continue to make plays.
12:52All these young players in reserves for the Niners.
12:54Big time.
12:56They were up 13-10 with eight minutes to go.
12:59Atlanta's on the 35.
13:00They didn't want to kick it to tie it.
13:02And they've had kicker issues.
13:04Oh, my God.
13:04They still are.
13:05Yeah, right.
13:06They went for it.
13:07Lucas with the PBU.
13:08Niners get the ball back.
13:10Go down and score a touchdown.
13:11They win yet another game.
13:13Yeah, indeed.
13:14Chase Lucas making a name for himself there.
13:16Michael Panics, so much not.
13:18That was the last time where I thought, hey, this 49er defense, as haggard as it is, I thought
13:26that was a great performance that night.
13:29Obviously, things have gone a different way with additional injuries since then.
13:33But that was the night when I believe the Niners at the time got to 5-2 in that game against
13:40Atlanta where optimism was brimming over the top.
13:45Yeah, I mean, optimism was brimming, and then you go out the next week, and you lose to
13:49Houston.
13:50And you're thinking, okay, just when we want to put faith in you, you lose to Houston,
13:54and then you go to New York, and you're thinking, man, that turf is a nightmare, and you still
13:58don't have Brock Purdy, and your defense is depleted.
14:02Who are you going to rely on?
14:04And, well, the man goes by three consonants.
14:07Two of them are the same.
14:09A couple of C's and an M in the middle.
14:10And when you needed somebody to put the thing to sleep, it was Christian McCaffrey.
14:15Third and goal, McCaffrey.
14:18With a block by McKivitts and a block in there by Pooning.
14:21Touchdown.
14:22Another one.
14:23Second today for McCaffrey.
14:24Another one.
14:25Sixteenth career game of one or more rushing touchdowns and one or more receiving touchdowns.
14:31Now the most all-time.
14:34He's got 16 games like this, and he broke the tie with Marshall Falk, who had 15.
14:39I have a weird observation.
14:41That's Kevin Harlan on CBS.
14:43Right between the tackles.
14:45Exactly.
14:46I have a weird observation.
14:48The national games, the guys say less.
14:51Have you noticed this?
14:52I mean, these are all TV calls.
14:54Yep.
14:54Kevin Harlan right between, and it's CMC, and here we go, and three yards, and the net is
14:59his third, and all of the stuff.
15:01And same thing with Adam Amin and some of the other broadcasters we heard from there.
15:05But listen to Tariqo and Al Michaels.
15:08Tariqo's just like, Penix.
15:10Tariqo's, outside, broken up, and that's it.
15:15That's the end of the call.
15:17I don't know what it is.
15:18There's something about the gravity of those national night games where the guys are a little
15:24quieter.
15:27Yep.
15:27Economy of words.
15:28And I wanted to pull that play, not because it was so consequential, but I was thinking about
15:33that drive.
15:35And you get the ball back, and you're up 27-17 with eight minutes to go.
15:39It's time to win it.
15:40McCaffrey for one.
15:42McCaffrey a catch for 39.
15:43McCaffrey for five, and he got tripped.
15:46McCaffrey for three.
15:47Mack Jones with a scramble.
15:49McCaffrey for three.
15:50You see a theme here.
15:51Yes.
15:52And I know that everybody wanted him out the next time they got the ball back, where it
15:55was McCaffrey for five, McCaffrey for four.
15:57I'm with you.
15:58But beyond that, when you need to win games, you've got the ultimate closer, and it's Christian
16:04McCaffrey.
16:05And that, my friends, is why you're six and three.
16:10Great stuff, dude.
16:11Great stuff.
16:12It's fun to kind of go through and remember some of these things.
16:15Some of those moments felt like yesterday.
16:16Some of them feel like three seasons ago.
16:19Tonjes?
16:19Honestly, the Tonjes catch, you're like, no.
16:21Week one?
16:22What are you talking about?
16:23No.
16:24That was in 2018 that they threw that pass.
16:27But it does go to show, and maybe most NFL seasons are like this, certainly by teams
16:35that aren't dominant.
16:36I think we could do this with a lot of games.
16:38But the 49ers being at six and three, you just took us through ten plays.
16:44There's probably a smattering more, but not really that many more, where if just this
16:50goes that way, or this, I honestly, I'm not even kidding.
16:53The Niners could be one and eight this year.
16:55With a couple things being different, they could be one and eight.
16:59And I don't say that to throw rain on anyone's parade.
17:04I say that to credit the players who have been out there who have made the plays, and
17:09they've made this season fun so far in the midst of a ton of adversity, and who knows
17:15where it's going to go next.
17:17But it also, I think, is a reality.
17:21How sustainable is it?
17:22I don't know.
17:24And is it worth your highest level of investment?
17:27If you're the organization, they believe no.
17:30They believe no.
17:31And they're probably right.
17:34The most optimistic Niner fan I know doesn't believe that this, even if it goes well, they
17:40could win this weekend.
17:42And I don't think people believe that this is a Super Bowl season.
17:45Right.
17:46I think if you asked, honestly, Niner fans whether or not they would win a playoff game
17:52or more, like if you put the over-under at playoff wins at .5.
17:56At a half, yeah.
17:57Or .9 playoff wins, whatever.
17:59Will they win a playoff game?
18:00I would take the under.
18:01Yeah, I think that most fans would be split.
18:03I think that most fans would look at this and go, yeah, 6-3, still some winnable games
18:08left, and an NFC that is not really middle-heavy.
18:12It's top-heavy.
18:13It's bottom-weak.
18:14They'll make the playoffs, but can they go on the road and beat Philly, Tampa, Green
18:19Bay, whoever you want to put in there?
18:21I think most fans would think no.
18:23Yeah, I mean, I think that's probably where the smart money is.
