00:00So tell me how the competition works.
00:02So the competition is like they have like eight different chefs and they put you one against each other.
00:07And it's like a football.
00:08You get selected.
00:10Whoever wins go against each other.
00:12And it's just a process of a couple of days.
00:15Do they like tell you what you have to make or they get you like certain ingredients?
00:18No, we don't even know who we go against and we don't know what we're cooking.
00:22And I think that's the most scary thing.
00:24You just show up.
00:25It's like a fire kitchen or health kitchens.
00:28Okay.
00:28I think it's the same producers that produce that show.
00:30So it's a very high TV show.
00:32It's very like when I saw the cinematography, like you can tell it's incredibly.
00:37Oh, they did so good.
00:38They have such a huge talent behind the cameras and the set is amazing.
00:44And so, yeah, it was it was so impressive.
00:46Like, even when I remember my first episode, I was like, I want this kitchen for me.
00:51It was good.
00:52It was an impressive thing.
00:53And I was so happy to be a part of it.
00:55And, you know, so you get to set and they say, OK, you need to make this because I don't
01:00honestly watch reality cooking shows and I know they are all a little different.
01:04Like some of them give you certain ingredients.
01:06You have to like make something up and other ones give you a main ingredient.
01:09So they do like basically it's like a regular TV show.
01:12You go get in the seat.
01:14You talk about it before and then you go to the kitchen and they just give you a basket.
01:18And it's a surprise.
01:19They tell you what the plate is supposed to be like.
01:22You can switch it up with the main ingredients.
01:24But the winning part is to have every ingredient I give you to be used in the plate.
01:29OK.
01:29And I think that's why many episodes like I couldn't have lost.
01:32But because I use all the ingredients, I want that one.
01:35So if you don't put all the ingredients in, are you automatically disqualified or you just
01:39dock points?
01:40No, I just kind of dock points.
01:42Meaning like if it's like a tie and you have one extra ingredient that you're supposed to
01:45and the other one didn't, then you win.
01:47Gotcha.
01:48Like, for example, when I went against Sherry Devine, like our plates were both good, but
01:52she forgot a cream inside her French stove.
01:55Sherry forgot the cream?
01:56I know.
01:57That doesn't sound like her.
01:59But it was just like both of us messed up and we had to do everything for scratch again.
02:03And the only thing that I know how to make is really good cream.
02:05So my cream was delicious.
02:07And that's what made me want that episode.
02:09If not, it would have been super tight in that one.
02:10Because I played it was so pretty.
02:12What do you think was the best dish you made?
02:14I think it was the last one, the one that just came out with Riley.
02:16It was her Brancino.
02:18I think from all my plays, I think that was my A-1.
02:21Okay, so you won OFTV and then you went up against Riley, who was the winner from last
02:27year.
02:27Yeah, because every year you go against the winner of the other year.
02:31Okay.
02:32So I went against Riley that she won last year and I won that one.
02:35So you went like $20,000 to win the show and you get extra $10,000 if we won the super
02:40finals.
02:40Oh, wow.
02:41So that was a little extra.
02:42I was like, oh my goodness, what is going on?
02:44And I watched every single episode and I saw Riley cook and I was scared.
02:49I was so scared because she cooks really good, but I brought my flavor in it, so she
02:53couldn't beat that.
02:55I'm sorry, Riley.
02:55I love you.
02:56So Brancino, that's something that I usually avoid ordering because it's like, it's the
03:01whole fish.
03:02Yeah.
03:02And it's generally like, it's a lot of work to eat.
03:05Well, I never cooked that in my life.
03:07Anything that I cook in this show, I never cooked it.
03:09Okay.
03:09But I'm really good at like inventing.
03:11Okay.
03:11So I just cooked it like I would cook just a regular fillet fish.
03:15I just put the same ingredients and it'll make the whole thing.
03:17And it looks really nice.
03:19How long, when did you start cooking?
03:20Like, when did you learn how to cook?
03:21I think like all my life, like I'm from Cuba and my family, I never going to forget this.
03:28We used to get a beach house in the summer and then all the family would go and stay for
03:32a couple of weeks in the beach and my parents and my, all the people would get drunk since
03:38like 10 o'clock in the morning.
03:40So like, you know, they would cook on the main scene, like big pots for everybody.
03:44But it got to the point that it would tell us like, if you guys are hungry, you need
03:48to figure out how to cook when you're very young and you're like in the kitchen, you're
03:51like, what am I going to do?
03:52So like, kind of you, you, you see how they cook and then you just start cooking yourself
03:56because it was like, they're drunk.
03:58We want to eat.
03:58So it's our cooking.
04:00And I think I learned it like that.
04:02And my grandma, they all cook so good.
04:04So I think just washing them and being poor and basically like having three ingredients
04:08in the fridge and figure out how to make that at dinner.
04:11Yeah.
04:11And I think that's why I was always been good at it.
04:13Not to know the plate, just figure it out how to make something that is a potato, make
04:18that potato taste the best.
04:19What do you think is like the one thing that people don't know about cooking or like, is
04:25there like a secret trick that a lot of people aren't clued into?
04:28I think for me, it's like people follow too much recipes and we all come from different
04:32backgrounds.
04:33So we all have different spices that we like.
04:35I think diversity of spices is what makes a really good cooking.
04:39Like, for example, like, I don't know how to mix this spice with this spice.
04:42Well, what I do and I did in this show, you can see it clearly crazy.
04:45I put everything in my mouth because I don't know the name of the spices.
04:48So I will cook like a basic thing and then I will get a spoon and I'll try a little
04:52spice and I try and I'm like, this doesn't go well.
04:54And then I get another spoon and I put a different spice and I would be adding and adding until
04:58I could combine a good flavor.
04:59Okay.
05:00So that's kind of like the best thing and mostly like the top chef that I ever like
05:04call Michelin star.
05:05That's what they will do.
05:06They just experiment with different flavors.
05:08Right, right.
05:09So what do you think is like your best dish just overall, like outside of the TV show?
05:14Just what's like the Luna star specialty?
05:16Before all of this, before I was vegan, before I'm not vegan anymore fully, but it was seafood
05:22pasta.
05:23Okay.
05:23Because same thing, like, you know, when you go and get a seafood pasta at any restaurant,
05:28they just cook all the seafood together and they throw it in the pasta.
05:31What I used to do, I would cook every seafood separate and then I'll cook the pasta and
05:35then I bring all those flavors together.
05:36So when you eat it, the squid doesn't taste the same as the fish or the shrimp.
05:41Everything good thing in the plate tastes different.
05:43So when you just get one bite, you're like so many flavors and your mother, I always think
05:48about Ratatouille, the movie, like he gets a little piece of cheese in the thing and
05:51like, the colors comes out.
05:54So I'm always being into the flavors and mix it a lot together.
05:57So that used to be my favorite dish to cook.
05:59Yeah.
06:00And that's what I make many guys fall in love with me.
06:02I feel like it's more than just your seafood pasta.
06:04I know, I know.
06:05But it doesn't hurt.
06:06It doesn't hurt.
06:07My mom always told me if you can make a guy loves you cooking, they're probably because
06:11I love you.
06:12Yeah.
06:13Yeah.
06:13If you go crazy on them, at least she cooks good.
06:16Yeah.
06:16I got to set my game up.
06:17My husband is the cook in the family and not me.
06:20So that's why you marry him.
06:21Yes.
06:22That, that among many other reasons.
06:24But yes, the cooking definitely helps.
06:26It helps.
06:26You go home and the food is ready over here.
06:28It's amazing.
06:28No, it's great.
06:29I mean, he's making dinner tonight.
06:30So you obviously, you mentioned your family.
06:33So you grew up in Cuba.
06:34You moved to Miami when you were 15.
06:37What was your upbringing in Havana like?
06:39You know, I was always in sport.
06:41So I'm very grateful for all the sacrifice that my parents did for me to be in a better
06:46school.
06:46Because if you go to a regular school, it's like, it's not bad because the education is
06:50good, but it's very poor.
06:51So if you want to have a higher education, like a better school, better places, like I
06:56live in my school, you want to be in sports because the government helps a lot.
07:01The people are in the sport.
07:01So they sacrificed so much for me to be into sport and have the best equipment and stuff.
07:06I used to be a professional swimmer, so I used to live in the school and I have really
07:12good upcoming when it comes to educations and like lifestyle, thanks to that.
07:18But I always told my mom and I always told everybody I wasn't born to live in Cuba because
07:22not many people have the possibility to know what is outside Cuba and that's why they get
07:26so stuck in the country.
07:28But I always have the vision and my parents and my family always like live outside the
07:33Cuba.
07:33So I was like, this country is not for me.
07:35I can do so much better than this.
07:37There was so much life out there than that little island.
07:41Yeah.
07:41So I was just, I couldn't wait to get out.
07:43Yeah.
07:44It was, it was like one of those things that I appreciate, but I don't like.
07:48Yeah.
07:48Do you ever go back?
07:49I went back a few times.
07:50I went back after I won the show.
07:52I donated a lot of money.
07:53I wanted to donate it to the, to the people because people are very poor.
07:56But Cuba is like, you have the government and the people.
07:59You don't have a middle thing.
08:00You don't have a place that you can just go and donate and help people.
08:02Yeah.
08:03My family is in the medical and my uncle would tell me like, they will use one pair of gloves
08:08for the whole day in the hospital.
08:10Wow.
08:10Like, there's no like, you change it and put it up.
08:12No, it was one rip off.
08:13Like, so I wanted to help them and I couldn't because there's no one that you can help to.
08:18So all you can do is buy stuff and bring them.
08:20So what I did, I ended up finding a small personal company to help animals.
08:25There's not a company.
08:26It's like people, they just make their house a sanctuary for animals.
08:30And I just like bought a bunch of bags of food.
08:33And I still do it, even though I already wasted money in it.
08:35But I helped them and bring them cat food, dog food for the baby dogs and stuff like that
08:40that they don't have over there.
08:41And that's what I did.
08:43That's the only reason I went back to Cuba because I never wanted to go back.
08:47And I have my family and stuff.
08:48And every time that I go there, I feel so sad and so depressed.
08:51Yeah.
08:51It's just like, it doesn't matter how much money you have, you can never help everybody.
08:55And it's just, I literally come depressed everything that I come from Cuba.
08:59I'm sorry.
09:00Like I did the family.
09:02I helped them as much as I came.
09:04And then I went once as a tourist and I loved it in 2019.
09:07And I was like, oh, I can come back here without having to feel guilty.
09:09Just go to the beaches.
09:10And then the pandemic hits and I just kill it.
09:14Whatever left they had in the country that was beautiful, it was done.
09:17Oh, really?
09:17No, not even with money, you can enjoy it over there.
09:19Yeah.
09:19I think so.
09:20I think it's still a beautiful country, but for me, it's now.
