00:00Judges at the International Criminal Court have confirmed war crimes and crimes against
00:06humanity charges against Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony paving the way for a trial, though
00:12only if he is captured. A three-judge panel ruled that there are substantial grounds to
00:19believe Kony is responsible for 29 counts of atrocities, including murder, rape and
00:25sexual enslavement committed while he led the Lord's Resistance Army, the militia that
00:31terrorized northern Uganda and later part of Central Africa. Deputy Prosecutor Mam Ndiaye Nyang
00:39said the LRA's campaign left deep scars on communities, noting that the social and
00:45cultural fabric of northern Uganda has been turned apart and is still struggling to rebuild itself.
00:51The hearing marks the first time the ICC held proceedings in absentia.
00:56Kony rose to global notoriety in 2012 after an online campaign highlighting his crimes went
01:03viral, yet despite years of international pursuit, he remains at large.
