Bruins goaltending competition ON?! Bruins PBP Judd Sirott joins! Does Sirott think Korpisalo/Swayman are pushing each other? Can the goaltending competition be good?
Transcript
00:00good morning how are you judd i'm good what's going on well uh nice win for the fellas on
00:05tuesday night shootout win and i i think i said the same thing last week i can't figure out what
00:11this hockey team is nobody can figure it out yet i sometimes i'm wish i'm hoping for a loss because
00:18i i'm i'm looking toward the draft but uh they seem to be winning some of these hockey games
00:23well i think since that uh debacle uh in ottawa uh they've reeled off four consecutive wins you
00:29know and i think so in the bigger picture it's been defense they played a much more structured
00:34game the goaltending has obviously upped itself here the special teams have been excellent and
00:38they've spread out the scoring and that's kind of equated to the wins but when you look at tonight's
00:42game and it's against ottawa again what do you take from was seven to the last time that they
00:47played them like that was probably one of their worst losses of the season it was the worst loss
00:51of the season i think it's the the only one and and donnie sweeney who was on with us i think right
00:55after that game he had mentioned you know if you look across the bruins losses and they had
00:59gone through a skid there that was probably the only game he said where it looked like we felt
01:04sorry for ourselves and that was an issue for the team last year that that the team was not the hard
01:10out that the bruins had expected and things started to spiral you know when i think back to that game
01:14in ottawa the bruins were essentially fine i think uh after the first 20 minutes i want to say it was
01:20tied it might have been one a piece but then things started to unravel in ottawa they have some skilled
01:25players they lit the bruins up on the power play they scored four times on five
01:29opportunities i think you'll see a much different game here tonight we we always sit here and we
01:33talk about goaltending like you said past couple of games it's been really good and it's kind of been
01:38both corpus allo and swayman is there i don't want to say a goaltending controversy or competition
01:47like where are they going to go with their goaltending there's absolutely competition there's wiggy there's
01:53absolutely competition and that's what the bruins want they want these guys to push one another and
01:59that's why you know i think one of the refreshing things here early in the season is some of the
02:03honesty that we've seen from marco stern and he said at the start of the season and uh the gm donnie
02:09sweeney had mentioned it that the way that the goaltending starts are going to be determined is is
02:15part of it is going to be the schedule and part of it is going to be how guys are playing
02:18so i don't think that the bruins you know and it wasn't jeremy swayman's fault uh that the team got
02:23trounced in ottawa but at the same time okay this is an opportunity to get jonas corpus allo in
02:28and he took the ball and ran but i think the whole idea is that they are there to push one another and
02:34they felt that last year that wasn't necessarily the case so if you go back and we're going to see
02:39lenis olmark here tonight and his numbers are not very good and he's certainly under some pressure
02:43in ottawa when he and jeremy swayman were here they pushed one another and it brought the best
02:48out of each of those tenders you're in a good spot right now coming off four straight wins but
02:53then you've got five divisional opponents ahead of you what do you want to see at the outcome
02:57obviously you know best case scenario would you sweep the next five but when you look at this
03:01actually what is a good stretch for you in these five games i don't know if i can you know break down
03:07the numbers necessarily but i think listen if you want to make the playoffs in the eastern conference
03:11and especially coming out of the atlantic division some of these teams that you're facing
03:14especially the next two opponents the ottawa senators and toronto maple leaves two teams that
03:19made the playoffs out of the atlantic division last year you're currently fighting for oxygen in those
03:24spots with those teams you need to be able to take advantage elias lynn home do you see him coming
03:30back in that five game stretch and what is the injury i know stern's been kind of tight-lipped about it
03:34i don't know you know um you know when we saw the hit both live and on replay it looked like he and
03:40jordan greenway went knee to knee but it was weird because it was the they went knee to knee left knee
03:46and then when he was skating off it was i don't know if he bent his right knee back when he because
03:52it seemed like the right knee was what he was favoring uh yeah i don't know um you know i mean
03:59listen when i saw it it looked like it was a knee issue the bruins have not confirmed or said anything
04:06uh in that regard i have no idea i really don't um the only thing that marco stern had said was
04:12that the mri that was taken confirmed their beliefs but he wouldn't say what their beliefs were yeah so
04:18how long does that take is it a knee sprain i i think the fact that that we haven't gotten word
04:23that he's gone under the knife at this point for whatever ails him is probably a good thing how long
04:29it takes him to come back from that where where exactly the knee uh was damaged that we have no
04:35idea when you look at the bruins kind of throughout the season and you kind of look at them moving
04:40forward i feel like the most important thing for them it's going to be a grind because it seems like
04:45there's a lot of teams that are fighting for like all these spots but the thing that they can't get
04:51into is where they go on these six game losing streaks four game losing streaks is that something
04:56that they can stay away from or is this like team going to be a roller coaster up and down that's
05:03what you're hoping you know i think that the way that they're built wiggy um is that they're supposed
05:08to be in every game every night if they defend and play to their identity and that's essentially what
05:13you've seen uh throughout the first 15 games of the season minus the game in ottawa so um i think that
05:20we're gonna see a lot of two one three two four three uh which have been a lot of the wins that
05:26the bruins have picked up here um here in the last couple of weeks so i i think the saying in the
05:33national hockey league is that good teams don't have long losing skids so if the bruins are going to show
05:38you that they're a playoff team they have to avoid those are they any closer to figuring out who
05:43the captain of the hockey team is going to be not as far as i i can tell you know i think that they've
05:47got a leadership group they meet regularly it's uh guys like david posternach charlie mcavoy uh
05:53hampus lindholm some of the guys who are signed long term i know elias lindholm nikita zadorov
05:58jeremy swayman they're all involved in the group but i think that i think the organization
06:03in and of itself and i don't know if it has to come this year it may not come next year i think
06:08they're waiting for one guy in particular to emerge being a captain is not easy and i start to think
06:14about uh zdeno chara who uh it's hall of fame weekend starting uh this weekend in toronto uh
06:20he's going to be inducted the guy who played you know more games as a defenseman in the national
06:25hockey league it's pretty unique what he was able to do not only did he sign her as a long-term free
06:29agent but he came in and he was immediately the captain i can't think of a situation off the top
06:35of my head around the league where that's happened and it's not easy i think especially in this town i've
06:40had this this conversation in the past with chief johnny busick that being a captain in boston is a
06:45little bit harder than some of the other markets around the national hockey league well i mean
06:49that's kind of weak like i don't i why like what i mean like give me a reason why i mean they've
06:57it's they've had captains every single season i i you can't figure like look you can't look at
07:03charlie mcavoy and say that's the guy who should be the captain of this hockey team i i again i think
07:08that they're waiting for someone to emerge um you know the bruins you know when you bring that up
07:13to them like they're paying him nine and a half million dollars he's been here for seven years
07:19eight years i mean that shouldn't be pasta though i feel like pasta should be the captain i think
07:24pasta's been here forever so like i don't know why it would be so difficult for him to be a captain
07:28in boston because he's too much of a happy-go-lucky party dude
07:32i think the other thing that the bruins will point out is okay who was the captain in 1970 1972 and
07:40they didn't have anybody that wore the sea at that point now there were some different reasons for
07:45that one of us in the room was alive then yeah i remember that one yeah yes who was it
07:49i mean is it because they may be considering trading somebody that would that would be wearing the sea
07:58no i i don't think so i i think being a captain you know and and you know i'm not as familiar with
08:04the national football league and how it works and you have captains and guys that run your room and
08:08the responsibilities that they have i don't know what that's like you know i can tell you uh i think
08:13in the national hockey league it's not hard because you able you have to be able to look after your own
08:18game but you also have to look at you have to look after everybody else's game and that's not
08:24necessarily easy when you talk about being a captain in this market it's a little bit harder
08:28to do it in boston than you know with all due respect than it is in columbus but don't you think
08:32that they gave mcavoy that contract because they thought he would be a captain and he hasn't shown
08:37them enough to be given it uh i disagree i think they they gave him that contract because he's a an
08:44elite national hockey league defenseman and a guy who could potentially be a captain down the road
08:50so that's why they gave him that contract you know when you talk about a guy like charlie mcavoy
08:55in particular i thought it was interesting so the athletic put out the nhl player poll and one of
09:00the things that's listed in there is the hardest guys to play against in the national hockey league
09:05charlie mcavoy's on that list he is oh yeah he is yeah i realize but how many guys make what he makes
09:12and aren't a captain as defenseman i'd really have to look around the national hockey league and and be
09:18able to give you an answer you know i'm guessing adam fox is is making that kind of money i don't
09:22think he's wearing the c in new york yeah see i asked ray block when we had was he in or did he
09:27call in and see in football it's different because the players we generally vote right and most of the
09:33time it would be the guy that the coaches would even vote for and that's why i always and i asked ray
09:39that i said i feel like if the players voted it would 95 be the same guy that the coach would say
09:48okay i think he'd be a captain that's why i feel like posture is that guy i feel like a lot of guys
09:52look to posture they respect him on the ice they respect what he does they respect the way he carries
09:59himself and i feel like the coaches would be like that as well but in the in the nhl it's more of a
10:05coach's decision uh not necessarily i i think it you know it varies from team to team whether it's
10:11the players the coaches the management that's involved in some of that decision making um you
10:17know so it's difficult to say here with the bruins and and you know with respect to to a guy like david
10:21poster knock i i think of what he was able to do last year after all the changes and all the tumult
10:26um and and the season that he had and the way he conducted himself uh i i think i think you could
10:34have easily made the case for him to be the mvp in the regular season of the national hockey league
10:38based on the way that the nhl defines it most valuable to your team and he was absolutely
10:45outstanding i also though if you look at pasta very popular player but does he have that hard-ass
10:51captain mentality where he could like yell at guys in the dressing room i i just right but you
10:58do you need that language barrier there could be a language barrier but did bergeron have that
11:03every day i think i think bergeron i don't think bergeron had that like i'm gonna yell and scream
11:08it at you and neither did masha but oh i bet some players were scared of marshan and bergeron like
11:14they didn't want to disappoint them i just don't know if pasta has that same presence like he is such
11:20a popular guy that people love but it does he have that captain ability i don't know i mean bergeron
11:28was scared of keith i mean i believe that was masha yeah but i i do think you know in the bigger
11:35picture a lot of these guys they grow into that role you know when you think of a guy like brad
11:39marshan in particular you know his first few years in boston i think if you if you look at the type of
11:44player he was the way he played what he was like could you have envisioned him wearing the sea
11:49no i think most people would say no into that he absolutely grew into it you know i think that
11:55was being around some great leaders it was also being around and and tied to the hip with a guy
11:59like patrice bergeron and there's no question he grew in he was a really good captain and i think
12:04after patrice bergeron left i i think brad marshan did a a tremendous job of carrying on the tradition
12:11and what it means to be a bruin in that room uh some say this is the most important month in uh in
12:17the nhl season at least the first uh eight months of it or six months of it whatever uh and
12:22thanksgiving is not that far away i hate i hate saying it um because winter's here but um what
12:27what do you think when when cam neely don swinney are looking at this team um where does this team
12:34need to be in a couple weeks at thanksgiving for them to uh to not sell some some parts of it well i
12:41think you still want to be in striking distance you know and i think most of these teams well the
12:45marker is you know okay you want to be in a playoff position by thanksgiving in the united states
12:50um i think that some of those teams greg when when you see some of those teams that are maybe
12:55just on the outside that doesn't necessarily mean that they sell immediately you know it it it has
13:02been a good harbinger of okay this this is a team that's going to make the playoffs you know i know
13:07um i've referenced elliot friedman in the past and what one of the things that elliot likes to look at
13:13you know one of the most respected guys in canada and around our game he likes to look at
13:16how many points you're out on on november 1st and you know the league is so jumbled that it really
13:21doesn't uh have an assessment this year so i i think if the bruins were in a position that they were
13:28far out of it and i just don't see it at this point with thanksgiving approaching
13:32then maybe then then you'd have to you know make a different assessment but at this point
13:37they're right in the thick of it as are a lot of teams in the nhl um you know and if you look at
13:42the standings so montreal's at the top they have fewer regulation wins than the bruins they've
13:48cleaned up in overtime in the shootout so that tells me that the bruins can compete um with every
13:55team that's in the atlantic they've already registered some quality wins you know against
13:59teams like colorado or carolina or washington so i think that they're going to be in the mix and even
14:05if for some reason by u.s thanksgiving they are maybe a few points out of the playoffs i don't think
14:11that that's going to change the calculus for guys like donnie sweetie and cam neely judge i think that
14:16the the you know the biggest question that people always want to know whether it's the bruins the
14:21celtics the red sox the patriots is this team good enough to not just compete for a playoffs spot is
14:28this team good enough to make a legitimate run that's a really good question you know i think at this
14:34point i think that the furthest that the bruins would go is that this is a team that they believe
14:39if they play to their identity can make uh make a run at a playoff spot now we're talking about
14:46another step forward so i i don't know if they're necessarily at that point but you have between now
14:52and as greg pointed out you know here we are in early to mid november and you've got the trade
14:57deadline that's going to take place months from now and you've got some assets uh if you're in the
15:02system you know i think we brought this up last time the bruins have two first round picks
15:07this year two first round picks next year i don't know if they're necessarily going to take
15:12four guys in the draft so i could see them using um some of those assets to help them out and gain a
15:20player that would push them into that conversation you know plus you know they've got some young kids
15:26that are starting to populate their system the bruins actually you know they cranked out a prospect
15:32report it's been really helpful for guys like me uh to be able to track um you know some of the kids
15:38who are playing in college hockey who are playing in junior who are playing in u.s league who are
15:41playing in europe um they now have they're starting to assemble some assets that they can use
15:47potentially to get them some players to get to that spot waiting okay well we will see you on
15:54television this evening uh say hello to brick for us i will say hello to sophia for us i will
16:00absolutely uh i don't know i i saw i caught p our guy pj stock the other night i don't know he's awesome
16:08yeah i mean rough go the first night but he was better i thought the second hey anybody can do an
16:13easy game you know yeah try and talk about it when the team's getting trounced seven to two
16:19no i love pj and he was regaling us with some stories uh after the game uh i think the following
16:24day at the garden uh some of his bouts uh in the national hockey league yeah he's got some great
16:29stories he's awesome yeah all right judd surat we
