Could Bruins make a true run? Are they contenders? Bruins PBP Judd Sirott joins!
Transcript
00:00On Nessun Judd Surratt is here. How are you? Good morning. Hello. I'm good
00:05I love the the sweater you got. Well, I address Greg our partner today the
00:10Boston Bruins and this is I'm sure you're headed off this weekend.
00:15Oh, you don't get to do the game because it's a national ESPN's got the game outside
00:20and then TNT picked up the Florida game. Oh boy. I mean
00:25timing on that is awful. It's three degrees here. I mean, it's 45
00:30in Tampa, but a stadium series and I like
00:35I'm sure you are a fan of the NHL doing these kind of things kind of started with
00:40the winter classic. I love it. You've been fortunate to to have a chance to call
00:45and be a part of a ton of outdoor games and certainly with the Bruins, whether it's Notre Dame.
00:50We're playing outside of Fenway. That was amazing, but I think the game that will never ever be replicated
00:55and because it came right after the pandemic was the game out in Tahoe.
01:00That we had a chance to do sitting rink side, you know, you got this beautiful sapphire
01:05lake, you got the mountains, the sun is kind of setting and the Bruins beat the pants off the Flyers that day.
01:10I remember that one. They had the ISIS issues at that game as well and the Tahoe, which was real.
01:15It was really it was really crazy, but you're right. The view was spectacular right on the water. Oh, it was amazing. So we
01:20you know, it's funny you mentioned that. So both of those games were supposed to start, I think, at noon or one o'clock.
01:25Out in Tahoe in the first game, the Bruins did not play the first game they played on.
01:30A Sunday, I believe it was. And I think it was the Avalanche against the Vegas Golden.
01:35And because of the sun and there's absolutely no coverage whatsoever, you know, you go on.
01:40A lot of these stadiums and yeah, you're going to have the same thing, but at some point the sun starts to go down a little.
01:45Well, this was the sun beating right down into the middle of the ice. You got logos in there. You've obviously.
01:50You got the painted lines. So it started to melt the ice. You know, and I felt bad for.
01:55A lot of the guys on NBC like Mike Tirico had to cover for like three hours before they were able to.
02:00restart the game. So they pushed our start time back instead of noon. It became five o'clock.
02:05It was perfect. Well, Raymond James, how many, what's that Curtis? 60, 70.
02:1070,000 people and a pirate ship. Um, I, I have a.
02:15And again, it's an embarrassment of riches around these parts because we've had a bunch of them.
02:20I obviously, or maybe not obviously preferred Fenway park and the winter classic there.
02:25to Gillette, no offense to Gillette. I just feel like there's the history of Fenway.
02:30And, um, it'll be, it'll be exciting. I don't know how, when it comes to Florida.
02:35I don't know how many fans will be there. I'm, I'm assuming it's, I think I feel like the usual.
02:40Usually those type of games do a good turnout because it's the outdoors. It's, you know, I.
02:45that the, the thing I look at is how do the players like playing in those type of environments?
02:50Cause I feel like if I was a player, that'd probably be like pretty cool.
02:53Oh, I think they love it. I.
02:55You know, most of those guys, it's a treat to be able to play in some of those outdoor games in some of those settings.
03:00Uh, when it comes to Fenway, I think the other thing is it's a lot more intimate.
03:03Um, you know, you feel like the.
03:05Fans are packed on Tapia. Obviously there's a little bit more history, uh, at Fenway Park.
03:10In a place like Gillette. So listen, it's going to be a great venue, uh, with the, the national.
03:15Hockey League is done. I don't know if you've seen some of the video. They actually had a tent constructed.
03:20Over the rink so they could put it together and they wouldn't be impacted by the sun and some of the temperature.
03:25And then maybe 36 to 48 hours before the game takes place.
03:30They'll remove all that structure and get ready for the game. But you mentioned the temperatures down there.
03:35I looked, it's going to be maybe in the mid fifties and depending on when the face off is.
03:40That's going to drop a little bit, so it'll be perfect. Uh, the conditions will be terrific down there.
03:45For everybody who goes.
03:46Before you look forward, looking back at the overtime win against, uh.
03:50I'm blanking now.
03:51Nashville.
03:52Nashville with the pastas game winner.
03:54Um, after the.
03:55game geeky said that it showed the character of this team right now.
03:58And that a lot of guys could just throw in there.
04:00towel.
04:01They're facing adversity.
04:02What do you feel like when you look at this team and how it's constructed right now?
04:05What their character is.
04:06I think it's been terrific.
04:08Uh, and you bring up a great point.
04:10So the Bruins, like a lot of people, you know, that, um, you know, went through it here on the east coast, they have.
04:15Had some travel issues, but it's not unlike anything that they have gone through for a lot of these guys.
04:20They have played in the American hockey league or me, uh, in the American hockey league and the, in the international hockey league.
04:25They have been called games where, okay, maybe the travel isn't perfect.
04:29So you had to travel.
04:30And in the morning it, it would be very easy.
04:32I think for a lot of people to use that as an excuse.
04:35And they didn't, they came out with a good start.
04:37They were able to build a two nothing lead.
04:39Yes.
04:40Nashville was.
04:40Nashville was able to forge its way back into the game and possibly because, uh, you didn't get the sleep.
04:45You wanted, or, or you had some bus legs having traveled in the day of the day of and Nash.
04:50Nashville was sitting there waiting for you that maybe some of that showed up a little bit in the third period.
04:55But the Bruins were able to push through it and pick up the two points when you, we have a discussion.
05:00The other day, like ranking the, you know, coaches in the Boston area, how, how would.
05:05How would you, you know, say the job that Marco Sturm has been able to do with.
05:10With this team, what, where would you kind of, what kind of grade would you give him?
05:13Well, yeah.
05:14Go all four currently coach.
05:15Well, I mean, well, you got Mike Vrabel, who's got a team in the Super Bowl.
05:19So I think he's doing.
05:20He's doing a pretty good job.
05:21He's the guy, right?
05:22Um, you know, it's, it's really hard.
05:23I haven't thought about this with Joe.
05:25Joe Missoula and Alex Cora.
05:27Um, you know, listen, those guys have done a pretty good job, Alex.
05:30Alex Cora led his team, uh, into a playoff berth year.
05:33And there's certainly been a lot of changes with the Red Sox.
05:35Joe Missoula is going through it too.
05:37Uh, they've missed some key players.
05:39They're missing a guy like.
05:40Jason Tatum.
05:41Um, and they're still a contender in the Eastern Conference.
05:43But for a guy like Marco Sturmwege.
05:45Um, considering what the Bruins are currently going through and.
05:50You know, again, we've talked about it at the beginning of the season.
05:52You choose the R word.
05:53They reposition the right.
05:55They reposition the right roster heading into the season.
05:57And they wanted to recapture some of the culture that they had before.
06:00So how are you going to be able to do it?
06:02We talked about this a lot at the start of the season, the Bruins.
06:05Are playing without a captain at the start of the season for the first time in almost 25.
06:10years.
06:11And so that meant the guy who's now the head coach has to.
06:15Insert himself a little bit more in the room and with those players.
06:18A lot of credit certainly goes to the player.
06:20But I think you can give Marco Sturm a ton of credit for what we've seen to this point.
06:24The Brewers.
06:25Or the Bruins.
06:26The Bruins are in a good spot at this point as well as they've.
06:30played, however, everybody around them is also playing well.
06:33I think the Bruins are current.
06:35Currently, if I look at the standings, they are tied for third in the Atlantic Division.
06:39Now, granted.
06:40Some of the other teams that they are tied with Montreal and Buffalo have a couple of games in hand, but.
06:45You've got a team in Florida who you're going to see in about a week that is right on the.
06:50Their heels.
06:51They're starting to get a little bit healthier.
06:52So as well as they've played, they only have.
06:55The last wild card spot currently in the Eastern Conference.
06:58Yeah.
06:59And you think about it, you got the Olympics.
07:00Break.
07:01And then you really, there's just a little over 30 games.
07:05left for this.
07:06A little less.
07:07For this.
07:08Less than 30 games left for this Bruins team.
07:10So.
07:11It's time for them to secure that spot.
07:14Well.
07:15They.
07:15They've done an excellent job here at home.
07:16So if they're able to win here tonight, that would be nine concessions.
07:20Executive wins in nine games here in the month of January.
07:23And I had.
07:24I.
07:25The NHL was kind enough to furnish me with the stats.
07:27So if the Bruins also win tonight, they would finish the month.
07:3011, two and one.
07:32Uh, as far as January's are concerned, that would.
07:35They would tie the franchise record for most wins in January.
07:38Uh, in franchise history.
07:40They've only done it two other times.
07:41I think once was in 2022 and the last one before.
07:45That was 1929.
07:4629.
07:47That was a great team.
07:48So.
07:49Yeah.
07:50Greg was there.
07:51Eddie Shore and the boys.
07:52They were cleaning up.
07:53Greg was there for that.
07:54So they have cleaned up with those opportunities.
07:55And Courtney, to your point, and this is something that Marco Sturm had talked about that games
07:5940 to 60.
08:00I know we have talked about this.
08:01These are the dog days.
08:02These are the teams.
08:03If you want to start making them.
08:05Move.
08:06This is the time to do it.
08:07And the Bruins have taken advantage of that, but they still have a long way to go.
08:10Well, kind of following up on that.
08:13We always look at teams, right?
08:15We looked at the Patriots and we kind of, you know, midway through the season, right before
08:19the trade deadline, we're like.
08:20All right.
08:21This team can make a legitimate run.
08:23We're kind of doing what the Celtics were like.
08:25They look like this team can make a legitimate run.
08:27So it looks like there'll be buyers.
08:29When you look at the.
08:30Bruins and I say from the front office perspective, do you think they look at this team?
08:35You know, before the trade deadline and going, we can make a legitimate run.
08:40Let's be very active and buying to this team.
08:44That's a really good question.
08:45Um, so if you look at what the Bruins have been able to do across the season, they.
08:50They've picked up quality wins against quality opponents all season long.
08:54It certainly happened here.
08:55In January, I mean, you beat Montreal, you beat Vegas.
08:57Vegas came in as the Pacific division leading.
09:00They were a winner or they were leading the Pacific division, but but they they've beaten
09:04a lot.
09:05A lot of the good teams around the National Hockey League.
09:07But how do they then move forward with what.
09:10They're going to do here at the trade deadline.
09:12I think we talked about this maybe last week.
09:14I don't see the.
09:15The Bruins in the market for a rental considering where they've tried to read.
09:20We position the roster and looking ahead.
09:22That said, I don't see why that.
09:25Why they can't compete with any team that they would face in the Eastern Conference.
09:29You know, if you.
09:30Look at some of the other teams.
09:31They've only faced Tampa once.
09:33But I think that that is a team that you can definitely.
09:35Definitely handle.
09:36Listen, Florida is going to be trouble.
09:38Whoever faces them in the playoffs.
09:40I think the Bruins can certainly handle a team like Carolina.
09:43This is a team.
09:44There's.
09:45There's no reason why they can't compete and go deep the way that the way that.
09:50They're built and the way that the Eastern Conference is currently positioned.
09:53I think it's it's hard for.
09:55For fans to look at them making a run at it, though, because they've been so streaky.
09:59And that's better.
10:00A conversation around the Bruins.
10:02And it's great to look at January if they end 11, two and one.
10:05But then can they continue that into February?
10:07Or are we going to see more of what we saw in December or November?
10:10Well, you know, listen, it's a fair point.
10:13You know, if you look back at some of those kids at.
10:15They experienced early in the season.
10:16I think the first one happened after the first three games.
10:20of the year.
10:21So they won the first three and then they what they went winless in six or seven straight.
10:25And then the the second skid that you allude to happened just before.
10:30The Christmas break and I think the Bruins listen, they could have fared a lot better.
10:34There was also a homestand.
10:35That they were involved with that they weren't able to capture some of the points.
10:38And I think the Bruins also ran.
10:40And I think it's been out of a little bit of gas.
10:42But we haven't necessarily seen that coming out of the.
10:45Christmas break.
10:46If they were a team that wanted to compete for a playoffs, but they needed to be better.
10:50Coming out of the Christmas break.
10:51So we're talking.
10:52What?
10:53What was the restart?
10:54December 27.
10:55And they've been a really good team since that point.
10:58If you look at the standings.
11:00I think if you backdate it, they've been one of the top five teams in the league.
11:04Well, where?
11:05Uh.
11:05Obviously in the, on the injury side of things, how, what are you hearing about Zadora?
11:10And how long you end up with that.
11:13Well, Zadorov ended up coming back to play.
11:15For a minute or two.
11:16No, no, no.
11:17He came back to play against the Nashville Predators.
11:18He played just over 20 minutes.
11:20Oh, okay.
11:21You know, as he will tell you, Russian machine never breaks.
11:24Okay.
11:25Um, but, but he was unable to play at Madison Square Garden.
11:30He did take the warmup.
11:31Yeah.
11:32So I think we were kind of watching.
11:33Okay.
11:34Who is he going with in the.
11:35How was it going to look?
11:36He also took the full morning skate at Madison Square Garden.
11:40Um, he and the team opted not to put him in the lineup for that game, but it was great
11:45having.
11:45Having him aboard, uh, for the Nashville game.
11:48So.
11:49Hopefully whatever.
11:50Whatever he's experiencing because that lower body injury, when he went down, uh, I think
11:54it was again.
11:55Against the Canadians.
11:56Yes.
11:57Um, it did not look great.
11:5920.
12:00It did not look great.
12:01Um, you know, and even a guy like David Pasternak had mentioned, you can tell.
12:05How much it meant.
12:06Uh, because you know, he returned later in the game, but you can tell how.
12:10How much, uh, it means to him to be able to play and how much he cares about the team.
12:14Stepping back.
12:15Out of the ice and competing for the rest of that game.
12:17So I think he's fine.
12:18The other injury that you're probably.
12:20Alluding to is Elias Lindholm.
12:22Uh, who played just over 11 minutes the other night against the national.
12:25Nashville predators.
12:26The Bruins are going to have their morning skate here at TD garden at 10 30.
12:30We'll, we'll probably get a better word on, on whatever happened there.
12:33We had a look at it.
12:34It was very.
12:35Very difficult to tell exactly what it was.
12:37It came right after a face off, but this is.
12:40A guy who very quietly has had a very solid season for the Bruins.
12:43Uh, and he touches.
12:44Uh.
12:45A variety of, of the team's games, offense, defense, and special teams.
12:49Can I ask just, uh.
12:50An off base question when it comes to the Olympics coming up.
12:53Because I just can't imagine being a player.
12:55And I.
12:55I understand basketball players do it all the time as well.
12:57But being a player that's actively playing right now.
12:59While.
13:00Getting ready for the Olympics.
13:01How do you feel like guys handle that as they're, as they're playing in a regular.
13:05Season.
13:06They're focused on getting wins for their own team, but then playing for their country.
13:09Around the corner.
13:10Um.
13:11I, I don't know.
13:12I haven't necessarily had that conversation with anybody.
13:14I think court.
13:15Certainly for the most part.
13:16I want to say players just they compartmentalize it.
13:18Um.
13:19I think.
13:20They understand that the bread and butter.
13:21Is what they're doing for the Boston Bruins.
13:23Okay.
13:24Uh.
13:25And being.
13:25Being able to.
13:26To.
13:27To bring their best to that team.
13:28And everybody that's in that room every.
13:30Single night.
13:31Okay.
13:32And then when the Olympic break.
13:33Starts.
13:34And they head over and whether it.
13:35Uh.
13:36The Lindholm boys who are both going to be competing for Sweden.
13:38Or David Pasternak.
13:39Or Jeremy.
13:40Swayman.
13:41Or Charlie McAvoy.
13:42Then they're looking at the thrill of a lifetime because.
13:45Uh.
13:46The National Hockey League hasn't had.
13:47Uh.
13:48NHL players in the Olympics since what.
13:5020.
13:502014.
13:51Right.
13:52Uh.
13:53And the thrill of being able to put on that jersey.
13:54And play for your country.
13:55And.
13:55And.
13:56And playing in a best on best tournament.
13:57So I think for most of those guys.
13:59They compartmentalize.
14:00It.
14:01And they focus.
14:02You know.
14:03You hear it all the time.
14:04Focusing on the task at hand.
14:05The game that.
14:05It's right in front of them.
14:06Tonight.
14:07It's Philadelphia.
14:08Uh.
14:09You brought up the Super Bowl.
14:10Just.
14:10Broadcaster.
14:11To broadcaster.
14:12Play by play guy.
14:13To play by play guy.
14:14Your opinion.
14:15What is the best broadcast team in.
14:18Uh.
14:19In the NFL.
14:20Oh.
14:21That's a really tough question.
14:22Um.
14:23I think Buck and Aikman are really.
14:25Really good.
14:26Um.
14:27But I think.
14:28Tariqo and Collinsworth.
14:29Do a fabulous job.
14:30I think Mike.
14:30Tariqo is wildly.
14:31Underrated.
14:32For his ability.
14:33To just.
14:34You know.
14:35Seamlessly.
14:36Do so many.
14:37Different tasks.
14:38You know.
14:39And not that Joe Buck.
14:40Can't do it.
14:40Because he did baseball.
14:41For a long time.
14:42And I see now that.
14:43Uh.
14:44ABC has moved him over.
14:45To do.
14:45Some different stuff.
14:46Uh.
14:47Those guys are really.
14:48Really good.
14:49You know.
14:50And I don't want to.
14:51Short change.
14:52Jim.
14:50No.
14:51You got to get out.
14:52You got to get out.
14:53Curtis.
14:54Not a fan.
14:55Whoa whoa whoa.
14:56Here.
14:57But I think where I'm going is.
14:58I don't do.
14:59Jim.
15:00What.
15:00What I wanted to go to.
15:01Was a guy like Jim Nance.
15:02You know.
15:03I understand Tony Romo.
15:04Has certainly been a lightning.
15:05Out of here in the last.
15:06Uh.
15:07In the last two years.
15:08He's no brick.
15:09He's had more work.
15:10Not even close.
15:11Not even close.
15:12Uh.
15:13You know.
15:14But for a guy like Nance.
15:15I mean.
15:15Consider all the sports.
15:16That he's been able to do.
15:17And he's done it for a long time.
15:18Whether it's.
15:19The NFL.
15:20The Masters.
15:21He did college basketball.
15:22For a long time.
15:23Uh.
15:24He anchored.
15:25He's a pretty talented guy.
15:26He actually has a picture of burnt toast.
15:28In his wallet.
15:29That he presents at breakfast.
15:30So they.
15:30Took it properly.
15:31Honorable mention for Tom Brady.
15:33He's coming along.
15:34When.
15:35When it comes to broadcasting.
15:36Yeah.
15:37I don't get a chance to.
15:38You know.
15:39To catch all those games.
15:40But it's certainly.
15:40He sounds like it's better.
15:41I think for a lot of those guys.
15:42Um.
15:43You know.
15:44Who step into the booth.
15:45Who were former players.
15:46Uh.
15:47I.
15:48I forget which player.
15:49I.
15:50I heard.
15:50Um.
15:51Tell like another analyst.
15:52Who was in that role.
15:53You have to approach.
15:54That job.
15:55The same.
15:55The same way you approach the job.
15:56That you had on the field.
15:57Or on the court.
15:58Or on the ice.
15:59If you're able to do that.
16:00Then it's going to make you a success.
16:01Well that's.
16:02And it sounds like Brady.
16:03Is putting in the work.
16:04And that's what we're.
16:05Hearing and seeing.
16:06Well that's what makes.
16:07Wiggy so great on this show.
16:08I appreciate that.
16:10I just had.
16:11The hard work.
16:12The dedication.
16:13The hard work.
16:14And the approach.
16:15I just had.
16:15One question.
16:16Could I.
16:17I've always been.
16:18Fascinated.
16:19With hockey players.
16:20And their mindset.
16:20Especially hockey players.
16:21From different parts.
16:22You know.
16:23Of the world.
16:24Puck luck.
16:25Dude.
16:25Do they look at.
16:26You know.
16:27The Olympics.
16:28And some of those.
16:29You know.
16:30Uh.
16:31Games that they play in.
16:32As.
16:33Uh.
16:34Like.
16:35More of a.
16:35They.
16:36I know they love.
16:37Winning a Stanley Cup.
16:38But do they.
16:39Take more pride.
16:40In playing for their.
16:40country in some of these games because i feel like
16:45that i'm i'm looking for the the word that to me that's the ultimate goal to be the
16:50best in the world for your country versus like americans like
16:55it's more about the stanley cup uh i i know that there
17:00been a lot of questions that have been kind of thrown a lot of guys you know
17:02about that very same thing
17:05um i i think i don't know
17:10if they've necessarily put it in these terms where where they give it equal
17:13weight or they put one over the
17:15other but i also think it really depends on where you're from are you a north
17:18american or are you european
17:20um so i think the bruins got the wind of the news when we were out on the web
17:25coast in vancouver and and elias linholm was talking about the fact you know
17:30if if you're in sweden you don't really get an opportunity to see a lot of of the stanley cup
17:35finals you've seen a lot of the playoffs you know but what you do follow is the world championships
17:39of the world
17:40the juniors or you follow the olympics um so i i think for a lot of those
17:45kids who were born in europe and watched mostly that game because they
17:50didn't necessarily have access to the national hockey league
17:52that for them you know and maybe
17:55it's changed because they played in the national hockey league for a while
17:58that was the pinnacle because
18:00that's what everybody in the country that's what they were watching that's what their families were watching
18:05uh but listen it's a really good question and a great argument
18:08uh if you know if you're
18:10american in the kitchen you know which one you are in the bathroom i don't you're a
18:15i don't you know which one you have to say
18:18what is it
18:20The old ones are the best ones.
18:21Somebody get something for my back.
18:23That's all right.
18:23I'm John Surratt.
18:25Great to see you.
18:25Great to see you guys.
18:26Enjoy it tonight.
18:27And we will...
18:29You're off.
18:30A little bit Olympic-wise.
18:31Yeah.
18:31But we'll talk to you before then.
18:33Hey, enjoy Santa Clara.
18:34Okay.
18:34All right.
18:34Yeah.
18:35Go Pats.
18:35Go Pats.
18:36Wiggy's upset by some of the bombs, but...
18:38Well, I mean, it's my first time.
18:39I'm excited.
18:40This is what people tell me.
18:41Well, they're peeing outside the window.
18:43You'll see a lot of that.
18:44Thanks.
18:45There's an app for that.
18:46Everybody's been texting in.
18:47There's some sort of an app.
18:48You can find out.
18:48It's a poop map.
18:49So you don't step in.
18:50Well, they say that the light poles have fallen down because the corrosion...
18:55of people peeing on it.
18:56Really?
18:56Yes!
18:56Who said that?
18:57Your world traveler friend?
18:58Yes.
18:59Who's after told you?
