00:00As Trinidad and Tobago deepens its support for Jamaica's hurricane recovery efforts,
00:05the Tunapuna-Piaco Regional Corporation is among those helping to lead the charge.
00:10Chairman Josiah Austin says the corporation has been maintaining close contact with partners in Jamaica
00:16to ensure assistance goes where it is needed most.
00:20We knew it would have been devastating and since then I've been in touch with my colleagues over there.
00:26I have one colleague in particular, a former councillor, who's been updating me and we're doing whatever we can.
00:33I'm getting ball by ball the extent of the damage there and we're doing whatever we could.
00:39Even beyond this call, we will be seeking as a corporation to continue to aid and assist them in any way possible.
00:47So we're speaking to our friends and family over there and ensuring that they are as best as possible in a good place
00:55and as best as we can help to make them get back on their feet.
00:59The chairman says the corporation quickly mobilized donation drives and the response has continued to grow.
01:05The response has been overwhelming, I must say.
01:09Thankfully we've had an extension because we've seen an increase in persons coming in.
01:15We've had a host of persons, schools, we have had Hillview and SAGs in the region and other schools are on their way.
01:21We've had a lot of private companies coming in, the Bureau of Standards, they are on their way also.
01:28And yeah, we've even had Jamaica Nationals coming in.
01:31They came in this morning with a host of items.
01:33From food and water to hygiene products and clothing, these donations are expected to make a meaningful difference.
01:40We have several items here, hygiene kits, water, non-perishable items, non-perishable food items, that is, water, clothes,
01:52a host of things that we have coming in just to assist.
01:56And you know, there's a call for more and more.
01:59So with this extension we expect that we continue to assist them and also hopefully the other countries in need right now.
02:06The corporation says its efforts will continue as the region stands united in recovery.
02:12Persons wishing to support can visit the Tunapunapiyako Regional Corporation Facebook page for details
02:17or drop off donations at the Disaster Management Unit in McCoy.
