00:00Jamaica's Prime Minister Andrew Allness announced on his Facebook page that Wednesday is day one of Jamaica's national recovery from the passage of Hurricane Melissa, which hit the island as a Category 5 hurricane.
00:13Prime Minister Allness said the government he leads is acting quickly to assess the damage and bring relief.
00:18He also said, quote, Jamaica, we are strong and we will get through this, end quote.
00:24Prime Minister Allness said the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa in just one area, St. Elizabeth, is truly heartbreaking, yet the spirit of the people remains unbroken.
00:36On Air Force One on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States will offer assistance to Jamaica.
00:42I've never seen numbers like that. I saw it a little while ago, 195 mile an hour wind. I've never seen that before. I've never seen, I guess it can get that high, but I've never seen it.
00:52And it's literally just, you know, knocking down everything in front of it. It's a stage five, I guess.
01:00And you don't see stage five. You don't see fives very often. You see fours and threes, but this is a five early on, meaning it gets worse.
01:09So it's done a tremendous job. You mean what you make?
01:12It is the United States going to.
01:14Well, we have to. On a humanitarian basis, we have to. So we're watching it closely and we're prepared to move.
01:20But, you know, it's doing tremendous damage. As we speak, it's right there, right now.
01:26And in a statement on Facebook, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States is in close contact with the governments of Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic and the Bahamas
01:36as they confront the devastating impacts of Hurricane Melissa.
01:40Secretary Rubio further said that the U.S. has rescue and response teams heading to the affected areas along with critical life-saving supplies
01:48and that the prayers of the U.S. are with the people of the Caribbean.
01:53On Monday, Prime Minister Kamala Pusabas has said in a statement that the government of Trinidad and Tobago,
01:58in partnership with key stakeholders, will launch a national collection drive to gather relief supplies to be sent to Jamaica to assist those most in need.
02:07Prime Minister Pusabas has said that the government of Trinidad and Tobago is mobilizing to provide immediate assistance to Jamaica in the aftermath of this disaster
02:16and is prepared to offer manpower, technical resources, emergency supplies and foodstuffs to aid relief and recovery efforts.
