00:00Most people think of London as one big city, but technically it's made up of two parts,
00:06London and the City of London.
00:09The City of London, often called the Square Mile, is the small historic core where the
00:14Roman settlement of Londinium once stood.
00:17It covers just over one square mile and has its own mayor, its police force and even its
00:23own local government, the City of London Corporation, which is separate from the Greater London
00:29Authority that runs the rest of the capital.
00:33Only about 10,000 people actually live there, but during the week, half a million workers
00:39pour in because it's one of the world's leading financial centres, home to the Bank
00:44of England and the London Stock Exchange.
00:47So when you hear the city, it doesn't mean the whole of London, it's that small, ancient
00:52square mile at its heart.
