An east London hot spot.
Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London.
00:06Dalston, in London's East End, has a long and fascinating history. Originally a small
00:12hamlet in the parish of Hackney, it was first recorded in the 13th century and remained
00:18mostly rural for hundreds of years. In the 19th century, as London expanded, Dalston
00:24grew into a busy suburb filled with Victorian terraces and lively markets. The arrival
00:30of the railways made it a hub for workers and small industries.
00:36By the mid-20th century, Dalston became home to waves of new communities, especially from
00:41the Caribbean, Turkey and Africa, who helped shape its multicultural identity. Though the
00:46area suffered decline in the post-war years, the 2000s brought new life for artists and
00:52musicians.
