Downing Street is one of the most famous addresses in the UK and the world.

Located in the heart of Westminster, it's home to the official residences of the British

Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, but it wasn't always political.

The street was built in the 1680s by Sir George Downing, a diplomat and spy under Oliver Cromwell

and later Charles II.

He built a row of townhouses on land he'd acquired near St James's Park and over time

they became tied to the workings of government.

Number 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister's residence, was originally three separate buildings.

It was gifted to the Office of the First Lord of the Treasury in 1732, an office traditionally
